Pokémon Puzzle League is Coming to Nintendo Switch Online Next Week

Pokémon Puzzle League will become the 17th Nintendo 64 game available on Switch when it arrives on July 15.

Announced on Nintendo's YouTube channel, players can enjoy the classic puzzle game steeped in Pokémon nostalgia as part of the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack – which costs $49.99 and is the only way to play N64 games on the console.

Re-join the gang of Ash, Misty, Brock, and Pikachu as they head to Puzzle Village and take part in a whole new type of Pokémon battle. Though the puzzle format is fairly common now, Pokémon Puzzle League took inspiration from NES title Panel de Pon where players must align blocks of the same colour in order to gain points.

The game recreates not only the look of the classic Pokémon anime, however, but also the different encounters Ash has with other Pokémon trainers. Players will take on gym leaders such as Lt. Surge and even Team Rocket. IGN named it among the ten best Pokémon games and in our 8/10 review said we "highly recommend this game to any child, teenager, or adult who likes the puzzle genre."

Pokémon Puzzle League joins 16 other N64 games already available on the Expansion Pass including F-Zero X and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

The full range of N64 titles currently available on Switch is Banjo-Kazooie, Dr. Mario 64, F-Zero X, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Mario Kart 64, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Paper Mario, Pokémon Snap, Sin & Punishment, Star Fox 64, Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Win Back: Covert Operations, and Yoshi’s Story.

The Expansion Pass also grants access to SEGA Genesis games alongside DLC for Nintendo titles including Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Happy Home Paradise and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Booster Course Pass, which doubles the number of tracks eventually available in the game from 48 to 96.

Black Mesa Classic Is a Demake Of The Original Half-Life 1 Remake

Black Mesa, the Half-Life 1 remake that brought the game to the updated Source engine and added new content, is now being remade again... in the original Half-Life 1 engine.

As reported by PC Gamer, a group of modders are currently working on a demake of the remake called Black Mesa Classic, which will include Half-Life 1, in the original GoldSrc engine, but with the extra content and improved features added in Black Mesa.

The mod has actually been in development since 2019 but a playable demo was released earlier this week on the game's ModDB page. It was quickly removed due to "a last minute issue" but the team has promised it will be back up soon.

"This is a GoldSrc project aimed to remake Black Mesa: Source with Half-Life assets on PC, with a classic visual style and features that push the limits of what's possible within the GoldSrc engine, including detailed textures and a more realistic environment," the page said.

"Our main vision for this is to give a new look to the original Half-Life in the original engine, adding more realism and immersion, making Half-Life more enjoyable, and giving long life to GoldSrc."

The team also said it wants the project to be accessible and playable to anyone, on any kind of PC regardless of hardware specifications. It plans on using optimisation tricks to ensure the game runs smoothly.

The long dormant Half-Life series was brought back in 2020 with Half-Life: Alyx, a virtual reality game set between the events of the first two entries. In our 10/10 review, IGN said: "Half-Life: Alyx has set a new bar for VR in interactivity, detail, and level design, showing what can happen when a world-class developer goes all-in on the new frontier of technology."

Murder at Castle Nathria – Hearthstone Card Reveal!

The next Hearthstone set is hitting the game on August 2nd (August 3 in ANZ), and will add 135 new cards, not to mention an air of mystery. With a central whodunnit, complete with a character called Murloc Holmes on the case, Murder at Castle Nathria is shaping up to be a lot of fun. In addition to ten legendary “suspects” (one for each class), it introduces a new card type: locations. Location cards are played to the board and can then be activated a set number of times, with a turn off between each activation. It’s all very Cluedo-esque. Alongside this is a new keyword: infuse. Cards with infuse are powered up when a certain number of friendly minions die while they’re in hand. You can see examples of all these new additions in the gallery below.

Today we’re revealing a brand new Warrior legendary card from Murder at Castle Nathria and it’s unlike anything Hearthstone has ever seen before. Introducing Remornia, Living Blade:

Yes, this card starts as a minion then swaps to a weapon after attacking, which can also attack immediately… and back and forth it can potentially go! It’s an intriguing effect, capable of picking apart boards of small to medium-sized minions. Check it out:

Quite what role Remornia will play in the new meta remains to be seen. Warrior is currently quite weak (having had a host of its key cards nerfed relatively recently), but that will almost certainly change once Murder at Castle Nathria is released. Remornia will offer versatile removal for the class - albeit at the cost of some health or armour - and there's plenty of synergy potential: anything that can buff weapons or minions, or that triggers on attacks could work well with it. We'll start to see what's possible as more cards are revealed.

I also love how Remornia fits into the set’s lore. Here’s a blurb from the Hearthstone team: “Every warrior is only as strong as their blade. Luckily for Sire Denathrius, his blade is Remornia. This sentient sword wants nothing more than to hack and slash away at the enemies of her wielder until all that's left is the red of their sins. There are many reasons why it is advised to stay on the Sire's good side, and Remornia is about a third of them.”

Sire Denathrius, incidentally, is the set’s murder victim… and also a pretty sweet-looking new card:

And if you log in to Hearthstone now, you'll get Prince Renathal (above on the right) to play with straight away! You can find out more about the set and pre-order bundles at the official site, as well as checking out all the cards that have been revealed so far. See you in the tavern!

Elizabeth Warren Wants a Universal Charging Standard For Smartphones

Massachusetts Senators Elizabeth Warren and Edward J. Markey, along with Bernie Sanders from Vermont, are pushing for a universal charging standard for smartphones, the senators said in a letter sent Thursday to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.

In the letter, the lawmakers urge the Department of Commerce to develop a strategy to protect consumers and mitigate e-waste, following lead of the European Union on universal chargers.

"Consumers shouldn’t have to keep buying new chargers all the time for different devices. We can clear things up with uniform standards—for less expense, less hassle, and less waste," Warren posted on Twitter.

The senators argue that not having a universal charger creates a financial burden for consumers and creates more electronic waste, writing, "In addition to unnecessary expense for American consumers, disposing of and replacing chargers generates e-waste that leads to environmental damage, including spreading toxins in water, polluting soil, and degrading air quality. Discarded and unused chargers alone generate more than 11,000 tons of e-waste annually."

Though the senator's letter did not specify what that standard charger should be, the European Union's recent ruling made the USB Type-C cable the universal standard, and though that cable covers most smartphones, tablets, earbuds, headphones, and portable speakers, it doesn't cover the iPhone, which uses Apple's exclusive Lightning connector to recharge.

However, as USA Today reports, the EU's new ruling may force Apple to replace it.

"We cannot allow the consumer electronics industry to prioritize proprietary and inevitably obsolete charging technology over consumer protection and environmental health," reads an excerpt from the letter.

Time will tell if the Department of Commerce will take action on behalf of the senators' request and if Apple will adhere to the EU's rulling and do away with their Lightning port.

"[The EU’s] policy has the potential to significantly reduce e-waste and help consumers who are tired of having to rummage through junk drawers full of tangled chargers to find a compatible one, or buy a new one," the senators wrote. "The EU has wisely acted in the public interest by taking on powerful technology companies over this consumer and environmental issue. The United States should do the same."

The Gayming Awards 2023 Will Take Place In New York City

The Gayming Awards will have a new home when it returns in 2023. The industry awards show dedicated to LGBT and transgender representation will be moving to New York City as it seeks new audiences in new timezones.

As an awards show hosted by Gayming Magazine, a UK-based online LGBTQ+ site, the Gayming Awards was previously held in London. In moving to New York, the show hopes to continue to grow its international audience, which rose from 150,000 viewers in 2021 to 320,000 in 2022.

"What better way for us to continue building on our Gayming successes than with a debut on Broadway?" Gayming Magazine co-founder Robin Gray said in a statement. "We've had an amazing time in our home in the U.K. but it had always been our plan to bring the Awards over to the U.S. to ensure our fans and the industry here get their time to shine too. 2023 will be our first time broadcasting on a U.S. time zone so we're expecting a significant lift in audience in addition to other exciting plans we've got cooking up. This Broadway show will be one not to miss!"

Like previous events, the Gayming Awards will seek to honor the best games that also promote LGBTQ diversity and inclusion. Last year's winner was Life is Strange: True Colors, which was selected over Boyfriend Dungeon, Pyschonauts 2, and Unpacking. The Gayming Awards 2023 will be the show's third year, with the previous two events being virtual and hybrid events respectively.

The Gayming Awards has not yet announced the venue for the 2023 event, but as always, you can watch the stream right here on IGN.

Inscryption, the Creepy Deckbuilding Hit, Is Coming to PlayStation

Daniel Mullins, creator of Inscryption, has announced that his creepy deckbuilding roguelite that featured on many game of the year lists last year is coming to PlayStation.

Announced on the PlaySation Blog as part of today’s PlayStation Indies reveals, Mullins explained that the PS version of the game will make use of the RGB lights and speaker on the controller. Stoat, the game’s talking card, will have its audio played out of the controller, and the atmospheric lighting of the cabin Inscryption is set in will be reflected by the light of the DualShock/DualSense.

“If you’re playing in the dark you’ll be one step closer to feeling like you’re inside Leshy’s cabin,” Mullins said of the lighting.

Otherwise, Inscryption on PlayStation is identical to the PC version. It’s part card game, party escape room, part horror. Starting out as a creepy roguelite card battler, the story soon twists its own rules as you gradually get closer to the truth.

Publisher Devolver will release the game on both PS4 and PS5, although no release date has yet to be announced. It’s worth holding on for that announcement though, and our 9/10 Inscryption review explains exactly why you should be interested. Unsurprisingly, we awarded it our best strategy game of 2021 award.

For more announcements, check out our run down of everything revealed during today's PlayStation Indies.
