She-Hulk Creators Discuss the Challenges of a CG Lead Character: ‘There’s Been a Lot of Growing Pains’

The creators of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law have discussed the challenges of having a CG character lead a series, acknowledging the "growing pains" they went through to achieve the desired results.

She-Hulk head writer and executive producer Jessica Gao spoke to IGN at San Diego Comic-Con 2022 about the extraordinary challenge of relying almost entirely on VFX to bring Tatiana Maslany's titular superhero to life. Gao admitted it had been a process of "trial and error" and not one that they would necessarily rush to repeat, even though they eventually managed to pull it off.

"This was unprecedented because [Marvel has] never made a TV show where the lead character is completely CG when she's the title character," Gao explained. "When we first started, we didn't really have a plan or know how we were gonna do it. We just knew we were gonna do it and I just figured, 'Look, it's Marvel. They know what they're doing. They're gonna figure it out.'"

However, Gao admitted that it was not as simple as that and it took time for the team to reach an outcome that they were satisfied with. "It's been a process of trial and error," she added. "There's been a lot of growing pains. I think if we had to do it over again, we would probably think long and hard about how often we want a CG character on screen, but it all worked out."

Director Kat Coiro, on the other hand, viewed the undertaking as less of a challenge and more of an opportunity to experiment with VFX using the suite of tools that were available to them. She explained that the actors helped them to incorporate that into production, as they worked together to capture the authenticity of their characters.

"One of the coolest things about working with Marvel is that you get to try every tool that is out there and it's right on the cutting edge, so our methodology was [to use] everything that exists to capture actors' honest performance," Coiro said, sharing more about their approach. "It didn't even feel like a challenge at the end of the day. It felt like a part of the process."

The first trailer for She-Hulk received significant backlash for the sub-par quality of its VFX but the footage also revealed some important connections to the greater MCU as well as a few new players – including Frog Man, the beloved oaf with a heart of gold who has already made it into the hearts of fans across social media.

A new trailer for She-Hulk debuted at Comic-Con, teasing more of the series ahead of its premiere on August 17 and confirming the rumored appearance of Charlie Cox's Daredevil.

Marvel also delved deeper into their plans for the next few years, announcing that She-Hulk would be the penultimate Phase 4 entry and that more Avengers films are on the way.

She-Hulk’s Fourth Wall Breaks Aren’t Just for Comedy: ‘We’ve Got Some Big Surprises’

Despite She-Hulk: Attorney at Law being a comedy overall, its fourth wall breaks aren't just for laughs, the cast and crew have said.

Speaking to IGN at San Diego Comic-Con, co-director Kat Coiro said the team has "some big surprises coming regarding the fourth wall", which will be broken for the first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during She-Hulk's Disney+ series.

"I think breaking the fourth wall asks a lot of questions that I hope we get to answer for you in the show" added co-director Anu Valia. "So I just don't want to give too much away. But it's very fun, it's very cool."

The breaks also have a deeper meaning according to actress Tatiana Maslany (who plays Jennifer Walters, aka She-Hulk), who said the hyper-awareness displayed is representative of "a woman moving through the world".

Maslany continued: "You have to be so conscious of the systems that you're in, and you are just so aware of how it is when you're walking down the street, who's there, [and so on]. That kind of hyper-awareness in a lot of ways feels like her superpower and I think that's fun.

"And also, it's a great way to bring the audience in. They already jump into the universe of the MCU but to be like 'hey, I know, I see you coming in so let's go together' is kind of a fun thing."

Comic-Con also revealed a new trailer for She-Hulk ahead of its premiere date on August 17 and confirmed the rumoured appearance of Charlie Cox's Daredevil.

Avengers: Endgame Directors Joe and Anthony Russo Are Not Directing The Kang Dynasty or Secret Wars

Despite it being a dream project, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo will not be directing Avengers: The Kang Dynasty or Avengers: Secret Wars.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige spoke to Deadline after Marvel's San Diego Comic-Con 2022 panel and he was asked if The Russo Brothers would be returning to the MCU for the next two Avengers films.

"They are not connected to it," Feige said. "They have been, I think, very direct about that. We love them, they love us. We want to find something to do together, but it's not this."

The Russo Brothers have been asked about a potential return to the MCU for a Secret Wars film for years, but they often gave cagey answers that were never a confirmation one way or another. Recently, they spoke about their love for Secret Wars and revealed it was the "one series we adored growing up."

Secret Wars was first published in 1984 and was a twelve-issue limited series that was a major crossover event that saw The Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, teaming up against an alien threat. It also introduced the symbiote that would later become known as Venom.

It's important to know that these next two Avengers films aren't scheduled to be released in theaters until May 2, 2025, and November 7, 2025, respectively. This means anything can change between now and then, but Feige and the team at Marvel clearly have another plan at the moment.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars will bring an end to not only Phase 6 of the MCU, but also The Multiverse Saga that will encompass Phases 4, 5, and 6.

Tenoch Huerta Confirmed To Play Namor In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

After much speculation, the MCU officially has its Sub-Mariner. During today's Marvel Studios panel, Sub-Mariner -- better-known as Namor McKenzie -- was officially confirmed to be played by Tenoch Huerta. The character will make their debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which will close MCU Phase 4.

First created back in 1939, Namor is the son of an Atlantean princess and a human. He is consistently cast as a villain -- the role he's apt to take during Wakanda Forever -- but he is also something of an anti-hero. In short, Namor is apt to continue being an important part of the MCU in the wake of Wakanda Forever. Notably, he's also considered Marvel's first mutant

Tenoch Huerta has appeared in Spectre, The Forever Purge, and other movies. He also had a role in Narcos. In addition to the casting info, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever received a brand-new trailer, as well as additional plot details.

"I’m so happy to be here. It’s an honor. I want to say something really fast about inclusion: Thanks to inclusion I am here. I wouldn’t be here without inclusion. And a lot of kids are there looking at us grinning at us because we’re here," Huerta said, while also delivering a message in Spanish. "Btw Namor is amazing!"

The reveal was part of an extremely busy panel for Marvel Studios, which included the confirmation of both Phase 5 and Phase 6 as well as two new Avengers movies. Now titled the Multiverse Saga, Marvel Studios has effectively mapped out the next several years of the MCU.

There's ton more news where that came from. For everything announced during the Marvel Studios panel, check out our complete recap.

Namor, the Sub-Mariner, who is a mutant son of a human sea captain and a princess of Atlantis. He has been an Avenger, an X-Men, a founding member of the Defenders, and even fought alongside Captain America in World War II.

Namor is also considered Marvel's first mutant in the comics and has superhuman strength and endurance, the ability to breathe underwater, and has limited telepathic abilty with sea creatures and Atlanteans.

The smallest appearance by a new Black Panther suit was shown at the end of the trailer, but we still have yet to find out who will be taking on the role that was previously played so wonderfully by Boseman.

Marvel released a new plot synopsis for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and it is as follows;

"In Marvel Studios’ 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,' Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and the Dora Milaje (including Florence Kasumba), fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T’Challa’s death," the official description reads. "As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with the help of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) and forge a new path for the kingdom of Wakanda. Introducing Tenoch Huerta as Namor, king of a hidden undersea nation, the film also stars Dominique Thorne, Michaela Coel, Mabel Cadena and Alex Livanalli."

A new poster was also released that shows the new Black Panther suit, and you can check it out for yourself below.

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler took to the stage to begin the panel and shared a few words about the late Chadwick Boseman.

"It’s been five years since I was here," Coogler said. "Five years ago I sat right there and we premiered the first footage from Black Panther and the late great Chadwick Boseman was sitting with me. And the cast hadn’t seen the footage yet so when we played it he was excited and he grabbed my left shoulder with his hand and was just squeezing down on my shoulder and he got so excited and squeezed so hard and I couldn’t even lift my arm. Standing here right now, I can feel his hand on me right now.

"Chad is no longer with us physically but his spirit his passion his genius and his pride in his culture and the impact he made on this industry will be felt forever. We put that passion into this movie. It goes to places of Wakanda we haven’t seen before, but it also goes places new."

The sequel to Black Panther had been announced early after the first film's huge success, but was "reshaped" following the death of star Chadwick Boseman. The role of T'Challa will not be recast, and Boseman will not be recreated as a digital avatar. The story has, understandably, been hard to predict until now.

The movie will also be missing Daniel Kaluuya, who played W'Kabi in the first Black Panther, but will introduce the character of Riri Williams (played by Dominique Thorne) ahead of her solo MCU series, Ironheart. We'll finally see what Wakanda Forever has in store on November 11 - and there's a Wakanda Disney+ series to come after that.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will be the final entry in Phase 4 of the MCU and will be part of the newly named Multiverse Saga that encompasses Phases 4, 5, and 6. You can fill yourself in on everything that's been announced at San Diego Comic Con so far, Marvel and otherwise, with our roundup.
