Predator Screenwriters Are Suing to Win Back Franchise Rights From Disney

Update (4/15/21) - As reported by Deadline, Disney has responded to the lawsuit filed by Jim and John Thomas by filing their own, claiming the brothers are attempting to prematurely terminate 20th Century's rights to the Hunters screenplay at the time the studio is working on developing another entry in the franchise. “Defendants’ notices fail to comply with these statutory requirements and are invalid as a matter of law,” states Disney’s own jury-trial seeking complaint, also filed today in federal court. “20th Century seeks a declaration pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 2201 that defendants’ notices of termination are invalid. This action is necessary because defendants are improperly attempting to prematurely terminate 20th Century’s rights to the Hunters Screenplay, at the very time that 20th Century is investing substantial time, money, and effort in developing another installment in its successful Predator franchise.” Original story follows. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Jim and John Thomas, the writers of 1987's Predator, have filed a lawsuit against Disney in their attempt to reclaim the rights to the franchise. As reported by THR, the Thomas brothers filed the lawsuit in California and claim that Disney, the company that now owns 20th Century Fox, is getting in their way. Copyright law's termination provision states that, after roughly 35 years for newer works, the original authors of a property may cancel transfers and end a studio's hold on a franchise. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/09/09/the-predator-series-in-5-minutes"] In 2019, this same issue arose over rights of popular '80s movie franchises like Terminator and Die Hard, which are also coming up on their 35th anniversaries. Disney had been planning a Predator reboot with 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg, but this termination notice, which the Thomas brothers first filed in 2016, may alter those plans. The Thomas brothers' script, which was originally titled Hunters, was written in 1986, making 2021 the 35th anniversary of its creation. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-10-best-80s-action-movies&captions=true"] The brothers are seeking declaratory relief and are represented by Marc Toberoff, who won a similar case with the writer of Friday the 13th in 2018. The original Predator starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and was followed up by three sequels, a spin-off movie series in Alien vs. Predator, multiple video games, and much more. Borat 2: Supplemental Reportings Special Coming to Amazon Prime, Will Feature Never-Before-Seen Footage

Six months after its debut on Prime Video, Amazon has released a trailer announcing that it will release never-before-seen footage from the making of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm on the streamer in the form of a multi-part special. Borat Supplemental Reportings Retrieved From Floor of Stable Containing Editing Machine will feature glimpses behind-the-scenes of the comedy sequel, as new and extended sequences. The special has no official release date yet. Baron Cohen breaks character near the ending of the trailer, urging his production team to make a fast getaway as a group of protestors heard outside of their van. "Go, go, go. Go! Just keep going. If you stop, you're going to be in a violent situation," he says to the van's driver. Back in January, Sacha Baron Cohen stated that he has no plans to make another Borat movie. "I brought Borat out because of Trump," Baron Cohen said. "There was a purpose to this movie, and I don't really see the purpose to doing it again. So yeah, he's locked away in the cupboard." Since Supplemental Reportings takes the form of a multi-part special, Baron Cohen has kept his word on there being no new films about Kazakhstan's man abroad. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm was one of the most popular streaming releases of last year, with Amazon touting "tens of millions" of viewers after its October debut. The film has since gone on to have a successful awards run, garnering two Oscar nominations in Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for breakout star Maria Bakalova. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=igns-best-reviewed-movies-of-2020&captions=true"] In our review of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, IGN gave the film a 9, calling the comedy sequel "a savagely great, and gross, time."
