We Could Have Bionic Eyes Sooner Than We Think

Bioelectronics company, Pixium Vision SA, has announced that it has received the HealthTech Award 2020 for its bionic vision system. This futuristic system, which won its award in the Best Product/Deal category, is designed to give blind people the ability to see and was recognized as the winner during the MedTech Forum 2021, which recognizes "the most promising gamechangers developing emerging technologies for healthcare in Europe," according to a press release. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2016/05/31/7-science-fiction-creations-about-to-change-the-world"] "We are tremendously proud to receive this HealthTech Award 2020 for the groundbreaking work being carried out with the Prima System," Pixium Vision CEO, Lloyd Diamond, said. "The Prima System has demonstrated its potential to make a significant improvement to the quality of life of patients with dry AMD and this award recognizes its capacity to improve vision." The Prima System, which is what the bionic vision system is formally known as, is designed to restore vision to those that are blind and it can do so without permanently replacing the vision they currently have, if at all. "The Prima System, a photovoltaic substitute of photoreceptors providing simultaneous use of the central prosthetic and peripheral natural vision in atrophic dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is being studied in the pivotal PRIMAvera trial," according to the press release. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2016/06/06/top-10-gadgets-we-wish-were-real"] This study was initiated last year and its purpose is to "confirm the safety and the benefits provided by the Prima System." This study and its approval is the last clinical step Pixium Vision needs for the system before seeking market approval in Europe. "Positive data from a French feasibility study have shown that patients with dry AMD had a significant improvement in vision when using the Prima System," the press release says. "This study also demonstrated that patients could simultaneously use prosthetic central vision generated with the Prima System and their remaining peripheral vision, an important step forward in treatment for dry AMD." According to InterestingEngineering, the goal of the Prima System is to use technology to improve loss of vision or retinal degenerative illnesses such as AMD. Two hundred and eighty five million people around the world are visually impaired, according to InterestingEngineering, with 39 million of those people being completely blind. Two hundred million of that 285 million live with AMD and each day, 365,000 more people are diagnosed with AMD, InterestingEngineering reports. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-25-best-sci-fi-movies&captions=true"] Pixium Vision's bionic vision system seems to be one step closer for humanity in bridging the gap between reality and sci-fi such as Star Trek. Similar technology, albeit just a touch more sci-fi than the Prima System, can be found in the likes of Star Trek: The Next Generation after all. LaVar Burton's Geordi La Forge can be seen using ocular implants. That ocular implant, however, was less about restoring vision and more about giving him telescopic vision and head-detecting infrared vision. It's easy to see the kind of impact a product like the Prima System could have on the world once approved and brought to market. Beautiful Falcon and Winter Soldier Poster and Heartwarming Video Highlight Finale Reactions

SPOILER WARNING: Major spoilers for the conclusion of Falcon and the Winter Soldier below.

[poilib element="accentDivider"]

The official Captain America Twitter account changed its banner image and bio section Monday, simply reading "on your left" alongside a new image of Sam Wilson in his Captain America outfit. The change came in the wake of Friday's Falcon and the Winter Soldier finale, which saw Sam take up the shield at last.

Ez6yn1XXsAAOQ8j

The changes are part of a broader reaction on Twitter, which has seen #CaptainAmerica trending alongside special hashtag emojis. Fans have also resurfaced a heartwarming clip from a 2020 Vanity Fair interview, in which Anthony Mackie describes how his son was initially mesmerized by the idea of his father becoming Captain America at the end of Avengers: Endgame. “I’m at the theater with my son, and the movie ends,” Mackie remembered in the interview. “My son goes…’dad? Are you...are you Captain America?’ And I said ‘I think so!’”

Mackie said that after looking a little stunned, all his son said was “cool.”

“I’m like...that’s it? That’s all I get?” Mackie exclaims, imitating his son’s nonchalant attitude. “Cool, cool. ‘You don’t cry, I’m not going to cry.’ So all night we’re hanging out, they get tired, we put them to bed. A week later he calls me bawling. And he’s like ‘dad, you’re Captain America!’ Yeah, dude.”

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/04/25/falcon-and-winter-soldier-episode-6-how-the-finale-sets-up-captain-america-4-mcu-canon-fodder"]

Mackie imitated his son’s flustered call. “‘That’s so amazing! I’m so proud of you!’ So then I start crying, and I’m like ‘you’re proud of me?’”

After chuckling a bit, Mackie reflected on the real weight of the moment for him as an actor and a dad.

“It’s funny. As a parent, you do so much, and all you want is the approval of your kids,” Mackie said. “Nobody else matters. I don’t care what anybody else on the internet says. My son said it was cool, so it’s cool. That’s been the biggest thing with Marvel and all these movies. You realize it’s an opportunity for you to spend time with your kids. Every Marvel premiere, I get to take my son and we sit and we eat popcorn and we watch the movie. We talk about it afterwards. He says his favorite part, I say my favorite part. That’s what this character has become. A way for my son and I to bond over movies.”

[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=marvel-cinematic-universe-every-upcoming-movie-and-tv-show&captions=true"]

Mackie’s son won’t have to wait much longer to see his dad as Captain America again. After the conclusion of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Captain America 4 is reportedly being written by the same showrunner Malcom Spellman and staff writer Dalan Musson. There’s still a few questions left lingering from the Disney Plus series, like what will happen to John Walker’s U.S. Agent. Judging from how things wrapped up, it may all be leading to the Secret Invasion event in the next phase of the MCU. Mortal Kombat Face-Off: Which Kharacter Is the Best?

In celebration of Mortal Kombat arriving in theaters and on HBO Max, we asked you to help us decide which Mortal Kombat fighter was the best. After thousands and thousands of 1v1 battles with matchups like Scorpion vs. Sub-Zero and Noob Saibot vs. Mileena, the ultimate character has been chosen. So, who claimed the top spot in the battle for the best Mortal Kombat character ever? Drumroll, please... ScorpWith a 93.1 win percentage, Scorpion took the win in 35,238 of the 37,831 battles he was in. Considering Scorpion has been around since the first Mortal Kombat in 1992 and has one of the most celebrated phrases in "Get over here!", it should come as no surprise that he would claim victory or be near the top. However, Sub-Zero gave him a close fight and earned the second-place spot with a 92.0 win percentage. Sub-Zero was also one of the original fighters and he and his ice abilities have been a staple of Mortal Kombat since the beginning. MK Top 10Raiden, the God of Thunder himself, took third place with an 85.0 win percentage, and was followed by Liu Kang's 83.6% and Shang Tsung's 81.2%. The rest of the top 10 included Noob Saibot, Shao Kahn, Kung Lao, Johnny Cage, and Kitana. This means that five of the original seven fighters, excluding Sonya Blade and Kano, are considered the best Mortal Kombat characters in the eyes of IGN's audience. As for the losing side of things, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance's Hsu Hao came in dead last with a 13.0 win percentage, taking only 4,842 of his 37,152 battles. Hsu Hao beat out Mokap for the title of the least favorite Mortal Kombat fighter by only 326 votes. Rounding out the bottom 10 were Jarek, Meat, Kobra, Dairou, Taven, Drahmin, Daegon, and Darrius. MK Bottom 10In our look at the 11 worst Mortal Kombat characters, we included Meat, Taven, Mokap, Kobra, Jarek, and Hsu Hao. Chameleon, Khameleon, Bo' Rai Cho, Moloch, and Kai defied the odds and placed higher than the bottom 10 here. Bo' Rai Cho, who even got a call out in the Mortal Kombat movie, made it up to #51. Are you wondering where your favorite Mortal Kombat kharacter landed, like maybe Jade? (She took spot #16!) For all the rankings, you can check out the full list of where all 79 fighters who competed in this Face-Off ended up. Demon Slayer Just Became the Biggest Foreign Film Debut in U.S. Box Office History

Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train shattered records en route to becoming the highest grossing film in Japanese box office history. Now it's breaking records in North America as well. Demon Slayer enjoyed the biggest foreign language debut in U.S. box office history over the weekend, raking in more than $21 million. It debuted on April 23 across more than 1,600 screens in the U.S. and Canada. The release is Funmination's largest opening three-day weekend theatrical release ever. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/04/18/demon-slayer-the-movie-mugen-train-review"] "With every milestone reached and every achievement the film has gained, we know that it is all thanks to the fans who have supported the series and the tireless work by the staff and cast," Aniplex president Atsuhiro Iwakami. "We are truly humbled and honored by how much the film has resonated with people from all over the world and to be able to play a part in nurturing this deep bond we all share as fans of anime." Originally a manga, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba has become a major hit since its 26 episode debut in 2019. It tells the tale of a boy out for revenge after demons murder his family and turn his sister into one of their own. It's currently streaming online across multiple platforms, including Hulu, Netflix, and Crunchyroll. Demon Slayer: The Movie sows the seeds for the show's second season, which is expected to air sometime in 2021. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=demon-slayer-the-movie-mugen-train&captions=true"] The movie released in Japan at the end of 2020, where it grossed more than $368 million en route to becoming the most successful film ever released in that country. You can read our review of Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train here, where reviewer Richard Eisenbeis praises it for being a "visually stunning" continuation of the series that "only slightly misses the mark." Despite its huge opening, it couldn't quite overtake Mortal Kombat, which debuted at #1 over the weekend. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Kat Bailey is a Senior News Editor at IGN.

Initial Oscar 2021 Ratings Hit a New Low

This years Oscar's award show, otherwise known as the 93rd Academy Awards, hit a new low for ratings as viewership fell below 10 million last night. This news comes by way of numbers released by Nielsen, as reported by Frank Pallotta of CNN on Twitter, who says that the annual movie awards show was watched by 9.85 million people. The show received a rating of 1.9 among the 18-49 demographic, which marks a record low for Hollywood's biggest awards show, according to Deadline. Deadline notes that the Oscars has never seen its viewership dip below 10 million. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=igns-best-reviewed-movies-of-2020&captions=true"] "[This] is an all time low by a sizable margin and down 58% from last year," Pallotta said on Twitter. As Deadline points out in their story about the Nielsen ratings, this year's record low beats last year's low, which was the previous record holder, by quite a large margin. The show dropped 58% in terms of audience this year compared to 2020, but "in terms of the key demo, the 2021 Oscars is down 64.2% in the earlier ratings from the 2020 Oscars." It's important to note that these numbers and statistics come from Nielsen's overnight numbers and they do not include the full picture as far as ratings go for the awards show. ABC, the Disney-owned company behind the airing of the Oscars, is set to release their official data regarding the night's ratings tomorrow when the full and final viewership numbers are in. Apex Legends: Legacy Update – Valkyrie Abilities, Arenas Mode & More

Apex Legends Season 9, otherwise known as Legacy, is its biggest update yet. Apex usually introduces a new Legend, a new weapon, and sometimes map changes in an update, but in Legacy, we’re getting all of these and a permanent new game mode called Arenas. Let’s dig in. Valkyrie Valkyrie, aka Kairi Imahara, is Apex’s latest legend. She’s the daughter of Viper, a Titan Pilot from Titanfall 2 who was also a member of Blisk’s Apex Predators mercenary group (if you want the full breakdown on Valkyrie’s past, check out my lore video) Valkyrie enters the Apex Games with an altered Northstar Titan kit that grants her more horizontal movement. She has more than one passive: there are her Vtol Jets which allow her to jump in the air and maneuver around, and there’s her ability to scan enemies in the air when deploying or redeploying. Valk’s Tactical Ability is a Missile Swarm that targets a small area with rockets that will stun and slow enemies on hits. Her Ultimate Skyward Dive allows her and her teammates to launch into the air and redeploy, which also reactivates her passive to scan enemies from the air. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/apex-legends-the-story-so-far"] Arena Game Mode Speaking of preserving legacies, Ash is back in the Apex Games as the overseer of the Arena game mode. After witnessing the Apex Games in its current state, Ash deemed the games soft and believes the Legends are in it for the glamor and fame. Her solution? The Arena game mode, designed to test Legends’ true combat skills. Arena is a permanent 3v3 mode where the first team to win 3 rounds and win the match point will be the victor. Its format is completely different from the Apex Battle Royale: two teams of three are pitted against each other and the objective is to eliminate the other. If you’re downed in this mode you can be revived, but you cannot be respawned back if you fully die (you can be brought back in the next round if this occurs). The maps in Arena are smaller and contain two new custom maps called Party Crasher (the area where Mirage Voyage has crashed) and Phase Runner (an abandoned construction site on Talos). Arenas maps also include three existing Battle Royale map locations Thermal Station from World’s Edge, Golden Gardens from Olympus, and Artillery from Kings Canyon. In the start of Arenas, you pick your Legend as usual, but before every round there is a buy phase where you can choose your guns, equipment, and ability charges (think Counterstrike/Valorant/Rogue Company). Unlike the Battle Royale, your abilities and ultimate do not recharge over time and you have to buy “charges” for use of your abilities and ultimate. Within the buy phase, you can upgrade your weapons and customize your gun’s sights to your desire (if you have enough materials). [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-playable-legend-in-apex-legends&captions=true"] However, unlike Counterstrike or the other tactical team shooters, your weapons will not carry over from the previous round even if you win, so pick your gear carefully since you have limited amounts of materials to buy with. You can gain more materials through canisters on the map, getting kills, and winning rounds. In each round there’s one care package drop that contains three weapons, and it’s revealed which weapons will drop in the shop in the buy phase. Ranked Arenas will be coming in future updates but there’s no official release date just yet. Arenas will have its own skill-based matchmaking separate from the Battle Royale. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/apex-legends-northstar-valkyrie-lore-and-abilities-explained"] Bocek Weapon Legacy brings in a brand new weapon to the Titanfall and Apex universe, and it’s a great medium-range one. The Bocek Bow is extremely quiet, though it’s not completely silent. You can find arrows for the Bow all around the map and you can retrieve arrows you’ve shot, including ones in the bodies of your enemies. The Bocek has two slots for hop-ups: the Deadeye’s Tempo and Shatter Caps. Deadeye’s Tempo lets you draw faster when firing at a perfect tempo. You can keep track of your rhythm by looking at the middle of your screen or off aiming down the sights; a meter will show when you hit your perfect tempo. The Deadeye’s Tempo hop up can also be used on the Sentinel sniper rifle. The Shatter Caps hop-up makes your arrows a burst shot, spreading out like a shotgun blast. This hop-up can also be used on the 30-30 Repeater. On the Bocek Bow, both of these hop-ups can be equipped at the same time and you can switch between the two by toggling the alternate fire keybind. The Bocek Bow is surprisingly accurate, and you can equip the holo, 1x, 2x, 1-2x, and 3x sight on the weapon to your preferred range, though there is a visible falloff at longer ranges. Map changes Olympus has been taken over by a fleet of abandoned ships and brought with them a strange parasitic plant that’s started to grow over the map. There are a few new points of interest including a docked ship called The Icarus that now sits between Bonsai Plaza and Orbital Canon. Inside this ship, you’ll be able to find corpses of the dead scientists who were aboard and find keycards that will grant you access to a special locked area of the ship that rewards the best loot in that area. The map rotations for ranked will start with World’s Edge in the first split and the second split will return players to Olympus. The ranked points and system will stay the same for this season. Legend Changes While we don’t have the official patch notes just yet, it’s been confirmed that Low Profile on the smaller Legends is officially gone. For example, Wraith no longer has Low Profile with her adjusted hitbox from last season. Octane’s Stim ability will take more health when used, Horizon’s Gravity Lift will now have a slower rise speed and she will no longer be able to fast strafe at the top. Lifeline’s Combat Resurrection is now shieldless but still uses her drone and her Ultimate now drops Shield Batteries and gun attachments and overall better loot. Fuse’s Knuckle Cluster now has two charges, Loba’s Teleportation Bracelet has been adjusted so she can move at full speed while tossing the jump drive, and Crypto can open care packages with his drone. Apex Legends: Legacy update drops May 4 and the official patch notes will arrive soon with more in-depth information about all the smaller meta changes. What are you most excited about in this next season? Will you be a Valkyrie main? Let us know in the comments below and for more on Apex Legends, keep it here at IGN.

The Suicide Squad Is Targeting Joker for Execution

He may not have superhuman powers, but Joker has racked up quite a body count over the years. Now Amanda Waller is determined to do what Batman won't - end the Joker's reign of madness once and for all. That's the premise of Suicide Squad: Get Joker!, a new prestige format limited series written by Brain Azzarello (Joker, Batman: Damned) and drawn by Alex Maleev (Daredevil, Checkmate). The series also features colorist Matthew Hollingsworth, with Maleev and Jorge Fornes handling cover art. Get an early glimpse of the new series in the slideshow gallery below: [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=suicide-squad-get-joker-preview&captions=true"] Get Joker! looks to be taking a very Gotham-focused approach to the Suicide Squad. Not only will Bat-villains Harley Quinn and Firefly be among the incarcerated criminals tasked with bringing down the Clown Prince of Crime, Waller is also drawing on the Joker-battling expertise of Red Hood. Years after nearly meeting his end at Joker's hands, Jason Todd is being given the chance to settle the score. It's unclear whether Get Joker! is meant to take place in current DC continuity. The series is published under the DC Black Label imprint, which focuses on mature readers stories with few or no ties to the regular DC Universe. Red Hood was also a major character in 2020's Three Jokers, which dealt with Batman's discovery that there are three different versions of his nemesis active in Gotham City. Among the many revelations in that series, readers learned a traumatized Jason offered to become Joker's new sidekick in exchange for his life, and that Batman has known Joker's true identity since the beginning. Assuming the series takes place in its own version of the DC Universe, it's entirely possible Joker will actually meet his end here. Azzarello is notable for having killed the Joker once before, a premise which fueled his previous Black Label series Batman: Damned, with artist Lee Bermejo. Suicide Squad: Get Joker! will span three oversized issues, each priced at $6.99. The first issue will hit stores on Tuesday, August 3. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/10/13/dc-showcase-batman-death-in-the-family-review"] Do you think Task Force X will succeed in taking Joker off the board, or will Jason Todd's good side triumph? Michael B. Jordan Tells Why Without Remorse Is Ignoring the Rainbow Six Games

Tom Clancy's Without Remorse, which stars Michael B. Jordan and debuts on Amazon Prime on April 30, 2021, will not be taking much inspiration from the Rainbow Six games... at least for this first film. Speaking to IGN's James Vejvoda, Jordan discussed that even though he is a big gamer and that Without Remorse deviates pretty significantly from the Tom Clancy novel that inspired the film, the Rainbow Six games didn't have much influence on the making of this origin story. "I don't think any. Not in this iteration," Jordan explained. "I think, Without Remorse, we really wanted to make that a true origin story. Well, I played the video game a lot growing up as a kid, so I think in my mind, I might've been playing a little bit of Ghost Recon as I was going through these stunts. But as far as the story purposes, we really wanted to adapt it to make it a little bit more modern and represent a little bit of the world that we live in today." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/04/26/does-without-remorse-set-up-a-rainbow-six-movie-michael-b-jordan-explains"] However, Jordan and Paramount Pictures have already announced that plans for Without Remorse's sequel Rainbow Six are also in the works to get it the big screen treatment, and that may be the time for more video game homages. "So from that aspect, maybe when we get to Rainbow Six, the sequel, I might be able to add some things in there that might be nostalgic to the game, but as far as this one's concerned, it was more of a personal motivation, I guess you could say." Jordan continued. Jordan is fully focused on Without Remorse, and confirmed that he hasn't even thought of what missions, characters, Easter Eggs, or anything else that may make it into Rainbow Six. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/04/06/without-remorse-final-trailer"] "Oh, man! See, to be perfectly honest, I haven't thought about it. Just I haven't. One of the hard things as a creative, to do when you're making a movie that could potentially be another one, is to start thinking about the second one while you're still finishing the first one. So I think, just really trying to focus on the movie as a standalone, and hopefully it's strong enough to hold its own weight, that people will want to see what Kelly wants to do in the future." Jordan concluded. For more on IGN's interview with Michael B. Jordan, check out his comments as to why Sylvester Stallone's Rocky won't be appearing in Creed 3. Oscars 2021: Glenn Close ‘Da Butt’ Dance Was Scripted

Glenn Close's viral 'Da Butt' dance at this year's Oscars ceremony was part of a gloriously scripted moment designed to bring some light relief to the event. We're sorry to break it to you, but Close's seemingly impromptu dance break during the awards ceremony on Sunday night was not as spontaneous as some folks may have thought. For those that were ever in doubt, The L.A. Times has confirmed that Close's now-infamous 'Da Butt' boogie was a scripted part of the show, set up purely to bring a little more entertainment to the event. Sure, the Oscar-nominated star may not have taken home the award for her performance as Bonnie "Mamaw" Vance in Hillbilly Elegy, but she did attract plenty of praise for the twerk-tastic moves she unleashed during a game of "name that song" at an interval in Sunday night's proceedings. Those who were at the event and those who sat at home watching, applauded Close for the manufactured moment. "I did not have Glenn close doing da butt on my Oscar bingo card but here we are," tweeted writer Roxane Gay. Twitter's own Sam Stryker added: "Glenn Close shaking her wagon at the Oscars is *THE* official summer 2021 mood," while The View co-host Sunny Hostin wrote: "Glenn Close is a national treasure. She needs an Oscar already." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=hillbilly-elegy-images&captions=true"] Altogether, Close has been nominated eight times for an Academy Award but has not yet scored a statuette. Her first nomination came in 1983 for her supporting role in The World According to Garp, followed by one in 1984 for The Big Chill and 1985 for The Natural. She also appeared in the Best Actress category for her turn in Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, Albert Nobbs, and The Wife. This year, Close was in the running for Best Supporting Actress alongside Maria Bakalova, Olivia Colman, Amanda Seyfried, and Youn Yuh-jung, who ultimately picked up the award for her performance in Minari, and, in doing so, became the first Korean actress to win the Oscar. Her win came from one of six Oscar nominations for Minari at the 2021 Academy Awards. Hillbilly Elegy, on the other hand, received two nominations — one in the formerly mentioned Best Supporting Actress category and the other for makeup and hairstyling — though it didn't win either. IGN's review of Hillbilly Elegy raised an issue with the movie's structure, noting how the free-flowing nature of the Ron Howard drama made it seem like the film was "afraid to land anywhere for too long."
