Netflix’s DOTA: Dragon’s Blood Anime Series Gets a Release Date and Trailer

Netflix has announced it is releasing a new anime based on DOTA, the immensely popular MOBA game from Valve, titled “DOTA: Dragon’s Blood.” Check out the trailer in the tweet below.

The 8-episode anime series will release globally on March 25.

Handling animation is Studio MIR, the South Korean company responsible for The Legend of Korra, Voltron: Legendary Defender, Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, and Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge.

The series will focus on several established DOTA characters, including the Dragon Knight Davion and moon princess Mirana. Davion, a warrior dedicated to wiping out the Scourge faction, encounters an ancient dragon race known as eldwurms, and is eventually dragged into a greater conflict alongside Mirana.

Serving as showrunner and executive producer is Ashley Edward Miller, screenplay co-writer on X-Men: First Class and Thor. Miller also produced on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Fringe, and Black Sails.

“Fans will love how we’ve imagined the DOTA 2 universe and woven together an epic, emotional, and adult-oriented story about some of their favorite characters,” Miller said in a press release. “The cinematic animation, acting and music are simply next level and I’m grateful to Valve for supporting our creative ambitions.”

It’s not a bad time to be an animated adaptation of a popular video game series, at least on Netflix. Castlevania season 3 managed to impress enough to merit a season 4 renewal, plus the Witcher is getting animated adaptation to go alongside its hugely popular live-action series. Netflix has also locked down a deal with Ubisoft on animated Assassin’s Creed adaptations. You can read our thoughts on why Netflix is the future of video game adaptations here.

As a franchise, DOTA needs little introduction. DOTA 2 has spurred one of the largest fanbases in all of gaming, with 11 million players on Steam last month, according to Statista. It's annual championship, the International, is also watched by tens of millions of viewers. We here at IGN have called it one of the top 10 most addicting online games, as well as one of the top 25 modern PC games of all time. Xbox Developers Can Now Get Their Games Evaluated for Accessibility by Microsoft

In 2019, Microsoft published a set of Xbox Accessibility Guidelines to help its developers make their video games on its platform more accessible. Now, it's giving them an overhaul -- and letting developers send in their games to Microsoft itself for accessibility feedback. In a blog post today, Xbox shared that the changes to its guidelines come as a result of a year's worth of feedback from game developers. "Developers have expressed enthusiasm for the XAGs, but also asked for additional context and clarification as to how to ensure these guidelines are properly implemented in their games," the post reads. "Additionally, there has been a clear desire for more content that helps a developer understand 'where to start,' or 'how to focus efforts.' Finally, there have been requests for help understanding the impact that XAGs will have on the gaming experience of players with disabilities." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/09/06/unboxing-the-xbox-adaptive-controller"] The changes implemented today include adjustments to the language used in the guidelines to make them more clear and easy to understand, as well as added elements like goals, scoping questions, and key target areas to help developers understand why each area is important and navigate the guidelines more easily. The biggest change is that developers now have the ability to send their Xbox or PC games to Microsoft to have them "analyzed and validated" based on the guidelines, and to receive feedback on any issues to help them understand where players with disabilities might struggle, and how the issues might be fixed. This will include links to documentation, articles, and other information that will better help developers understand why certain issues are important. And most importantly of all, members of Xbox's Gaming & Disability Community will be a part of the game feedback process. Xbox has been a vocal advocate for more accessible gaming for years now, notably with the release of the Xbox Adaptive Controller in 2018, and continuing to support accessibility by backing explicitly accessible games like HyperDot, and most recently with a number of features included in the Xbox Series X. The Mandalorian: Hasbro Has ‘No Current Plans’ to Make More Cara Dune Figures After Gina Carano’s Firing

Toy maker Hasbro has confirmed it has “no current plans to create more” Cara Dune action figures following Lucasfilm’s decision to remove actress Gina Carano from the Mandalorian series, Deadline reports.

Previous reports indicated Hasbro was discontinuing Cara Dune figures due to Carano’s controversial social media posts, as evidenced by a customer support message from BigBadToyStore. Hasbro has now officially confirmed its stance.

“We’re thrilled to have the privilege of creating products featuring characters and stories from The Mandalorian for our fans. Hasbro has completed development of all season 1 and 2 product featuring Cara Dune, and there are no current plans to create more. We are actively working with our retail partners to address existing orders,” Hasbro senior vice president of global communications Julie Duffy said.

In a report from THR detailing Disney's decision to fire Carano, Cara Dune was not expected to be a part of the upcoming Boba Fett spinoff, and the outlet's sources indicate Cara Dune may be recast down the line for plot and merchandise reasons. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/16/rian-johnson-is-apparently-sticking-with-his-star-wars-trilogy-ign-now"]

Lucasfilm announced it had fired Carano in a statement originally obtained by io9, stating that the actress’ social media posts “denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.” Carano was the subject of criticism online when, in a now-deleted Instagram post, she compared being a modern-day Republican to being Jewish during the Holocaust. The hashtag #FireGinaCarano has trended on social media in recent months after other incendiary comments by the television and film star.

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/11/the-mandalorian-actress-gina-carano-fired-ign-now"]

Lucasfilm originally planned on announcing a new Star Wars series focused on Carano’s character, but those plans were scrapped by December following her earlier comments. It’s unclear how heavily Lucasfilm or Disney invested in producing Cara Dune action figures, but considering Lucasfilm had big plans for her character, it makes sense that Cara Dune would have originally been included in merchandising opportunities.

Carano also previously made comments critical of pronouns being used in Twitter bios (a move which was seen as denigrating of transgender people), shared memes mocking the use of masks during the COVID-19 pandemic, alleged voter fraud during the 2020 election, and made comments critical of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Xbox’s New Headset Was Hidden in the Series X and S Launch Trailer

Xbox announced a new wireless headset for Series X and S earlier today, but attentive fans may have actually caught a glimpse of it in a trailer last year.

[caption id="attachment_2473955" align="alignnone" width="720"]Credit: Xbox "Power Your Dreams" Trailer Credit: Xbox "Power Your Dreams" Trailer[/caption]

In an October trailer titled “Power Your Dreams,” a giant CG avatar of Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya boots up an Xbox Series X and does a bunch of awesome video game stuff, including growing to 80 times the size of a planet and donning the Master Chief suit. Before all that, he dons a pair of Xbox’s new wireless headphones, a giant smile growing across his face before he’s teleported into space. Check out the trailer below.

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/10/09/xbox-series-xs-power-your-dreams-trailer"]

Xbox social media manager Josh Stein confirmed the easter egg on Tuesday, adding that he wasn’t sure if other easter eggs existed in the trailer.

The Xbox team is quite fond of hiding their latest hardware and other easter eggs in videos. During the Game Lab 2020 Keynote Fireside chat, Xbox head Phil Spencer spoke with interviewers while the Xbox Series X was sitting on his shelf in the background the entire time.

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/16/xbox-wireless-headset-launch-trailer"]

The new wireless headset may not actually transport you to different dimensions, but at $99.99, it’ll work with both the Series X, Series S, and Xbox One and will allow for spatial audio. The headset supports Xbox’s suite of 3D audio systems: Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos, and DTS Headphone: X. If you’re more of a PC Gamer, it’ll work there, too.

The headset is available starting on March 16, but you can pre-order it on Amazon or the Microsoft Store now. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Joseph Knoop is a writer/producer/easter egg hunter for IGN.

Bridgerton’s Rege-Jean Page to Star in Dungeons and Dragons Film

Bridgerton’s very own Duke of Hastings AKA Simon Basset AKA actor Rege-Jean Page has officially joined the cast of Paramount's upcoming Dungeons & Dragons film, THR reports.

[caption id="attachment_2473939" align="alignnone" width="720"]LONDON, ENGLAND - JANUARY 22: Regé-Jean Page attends the Vanity Fair EE Rising Star BAFTAs Pre Party at The Standard on January 22, 2020 in London, England. Page is joining Chris Pine (Star Trek, Wonder Woman), Michelle Rodriguez (Fast and the Furious), and Justice Smith (Detective Pikachu) in the film, which is being directed by Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley.

Page, who has previously starred in Mortal Engines and ABC’s For the People, rose to greater stardom as a result of his role in Bridgerton, Netflix’s Regency era debutante drama. In IGN’s review, we gave Bridgerton a nine out of 10, calling the chemistry between Page’s mysterious and conflicted Basset and Phoebe Dynevor’s Daphne Bridgerton “impeccable.” The series was watched by 82 million viewers in its first month, according to Netflix.

Plot details for Dungeons & Dragons are under tight wraps, so it remains to be seen who Page will be playing, and whether the plot will keep things strictly fantasy or marry that with real-world tabletop play.

Dungeons & Dragons is currently slated for release on May 27, 2022 due to delays resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you’ve wrapped up Bridgerton, make sure to check out why we think it’s the next big cinematic universe to take inspiration from.

Batman ’89 and Superman ’78: Classic DC Movie Universes Return

DC Comics is expanding on two of the most iconic superhero movie universes of all time in 2021. Today the publisher announced Superman '78 and Batman '89, which chronicle the further adventures of Christopher Reeve's Superman and Michael Keaton's Batman. Both titles are similar to DC's previous Batman '66 and Wonder Woman '77 comics, in that they're both digital-first titles set in these cinematic universes and featuring the likenesses of the actors involved. [caption id="attachment_2473866" align="aligncenter" width="1400"]Art by Joe Quinones. (Image Credit: DC) Art by Joe Quinones. (Image Credit: DC)[/caption] Fittingly, Batman '89 is drawn by Dial H artist Joe Quinones, who famously pitched DC on a potential Batman '89 comic several years ago. DC didn't approve the pitch at the time, though Quinones posted art on his website giving fans a taste of what he envisioned for the series. Now those plans are coming to fruition, and Quinones is even collaborating with Batman screenwriter Sam Hamm on the new series. Batman '89 looks to be ignoring both Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, instead presenting an alternate continuation of Batman Returns more in line with director Tim Burton's vision. The series will not only pay off on Returns' final shot by bringing back Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman, it'll also revive abandoned Batman Returns plot threads by introducing "a new Robin" (presumably Marlon Wayans'  Dick Grayson) and showing the Billy Dee Williams version of Harvey Dent becoming Two-Face. Update: Quinones has posted some Batman '89 concept art on his Twitter account, giving fans a better idea of the new characters appearing in the series. Detective Harvey Bullock will be making his debut, along with a new version of the Joker modeled after the late musician Prince and what looks to be the Dee Dees from Batman Beyond. Batman himself will sport a redesigned Batsuit that combines the classic 1989 suit with elements of Batman: The Animated Series. We'll also see a civilian costume for Bruce inspired by the Bruce Wayne action figure from Kenner's Batman Returns line. This concept art also shows Bruce with graying temples, suggesting the book is set years after the events of Batman Returns but before Bruce has grown too old to continue his war on crime. Superman '78, meanwhile, is a collaboration between Hawkman writer Robert Venditti and Batman '66 artist Wilfredo Torres. This series is set fairly early in the Man of Steel's costumed career, before Lois Lane uncovers Clark's secret. Superman '78 explores how the citizens of Metropolis come to grips with the discovery that a man can fly. It's unknown whether the series will introduce new takes on familiar Superman villains. [caption id="attachment_2473867" align="aligncenter" width="1400"]Art by Wilfredo Torres. (Image Credit: DC) Art by Wilfredo Torres. (Image Credit: DC)[/caption] Both Batman '89 and Superman '78 will run for 12 digital chapters. The first six chapters of both series will launch on July 27, with new chapters following once a week for the next six weeks. Print issues collecting two chapters each will be published between August and October 2021, with hardcover collections to follow in October for Batman '89 and November for Superman '78. The timing of the Batman '89 announcement is intriguing, given that Keaton is reportedly preparing to reprise the Batman role in the upcoming Flash movie. Could this series help fill in some of the missing gaps in the Batman '89 timeline? Assuming the book is successful, we can only hope DC will announce a follow-up project that more directly sets the stage for the older Bruce Wayne of The Flash. Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters Will Solve a Key Boba Fett Mystery

Marvel Comics has revealed a new Star Wars crossover set in the period in between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Dubbed War of the Bounty Hunters, this Boba Fett-centric storyline will address one of the biggest unanswered questions about this era in the Star Wars timeline. This crossover kicks off in May 2021 with a prelude issue called Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters Alpha #1, from writer Charles Soule (Star Wars) and artist Steve McNiven (Civil War). From there, the story will continue both in the form of a five issue War of the Bounty Hunters miniseries (written by Soule and drawn by Star Wars: Thrawn's Luke Ross) and in the pages of Marvel's four Episode V-era comics - Star Wars, Star Wars: Darth Vader, Star Wars: Bounty Hunters and Star Wars: Doctor Aphra. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=star-wars-war-of-the-bounty-hunters-cover-gallery&captions=true"] War of the Bounty Hunters aims to address the question of why it took so long for Luke, Leia and Lando to rescue the frozen Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt. After all, there's about a year of time separating the latter two movies in the original trilogy. As we'll learn, Boba Fett didn't immediately make his way to Jabba's Palace. Fett will now find himself the most hunted target in the galaxy as the Rebel Alliance, the Black Sun criminal organization and even his fellow bounty hunters do everything in their power to steal his prize bounty. “The main story that we’re dealing with is a Boba Fett-focused crime epic, that involves Boba Fett going up against some of the heaviest hitters in the galaxy. It’s Jabba the Hutt. It’s Black Sun. It’s Darth Vader. And a bunch of others — factions and so on — that I think will be really interesting for the fans,” Soule told Star Wars.com. “It’s basically Boba Fett, by himself, against all of these people.” This is certainly interesting timing for a Boba Fett story, given the character's recent, long-awaited return in The Mandalorian: Season 2 and the new details revealed about his family history and connection to Mandalore. Will War of the Bounty Hunters build on those reveals and showcase a more sympathetic approach to this formerly enigmatic villain? Interestingly, Marvel previously teased this crossover with the following image, which could suggest Fett will be donning a shiny black costume and spear during this ordeal: Boba_Fett_teaser Whatever happens, Soule makes it clear the crossover is designed to lay the groundwork for even bigger things to come for the franchise. “War of the Bounty Hunters is a story about Boba Fett doing his thing, but it builds into something much bigger, and that’s what the best comic crossovers and big stories do. They tell a great story in and of themselves, but they’re also the start of something, and they open a lot of new doors," Soule continued. "And this story will absolutely do that.” This is just the latest example of Marvel's current Star Wars lineup filling in some major gaps in the Star Wars timeline or addressing key plot holes. For example, the core Star Wars series has revealed how Luke recovered his X-Wing from Cloud City and introduced Luke's Kenner-inspired yellow lightsaber, while Darth Vader has forged an important link to The Rise of Skywalker.
