Spider-Man: Far From Home’s Second Weekend at the Box Office

It’s become tradition for most Marvel movies to have no other competitors on opening weekend, which often leads to big debuts at the US domestic box office and then notable drops in their second weekends. Spider-Man: Far From Home, however, is a slightly different case as the film opened on Tuesday, July 2nd, earning almost $93 million at the domestic box office before its first official three-day weekend in release, where it made $92.6 million. Far From Home remained the No. 1 movie at the North American box office this weekend, earning an estimated $45.3 million in its second weekend.

With a 51.1% decline in attendance, Spider-Man: Far From Home also had one of the lower drops in second weekend ticket sales for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. (It should be noted, of course, that the Spidey solo films are distributed by Sony Pictures and not Disney like the main MCU entries.)

The MCU’s Biggest Second Weekend Box Office Drops

It’s become tradition for most Marvel movies to have no other competitors on opening weekend, which often leads to big debuts, which continued last week when Ant-Man and the Wasp opened big with $75.8 million. We learned Sunday that its reign atop the box office has already come to an end, dropping a whopping 62% from its opening and sliding to second place with $28.8 million, behind newcomer Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, which debuted atop the box office with $44.1 million.

Ant-Man and the Wasp is only the fourth MCU movie that only spent one weekend at the top, and its second weekend dip is also among the biggest in MCU history.

There are only four other MCU movies to have just a one-week reign atop the box office. The first is, unsurprisingly, the MCU’s lowest-grossing movie, 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. That movie, the second in MCU history which opened just months after Iron Man in the summer of 2008, dropped 60.1% and dropped to second place in its second weekend, behind newcomer Get Smart which debuted with $38.1 million.
