Middle-earth: Shadow of War Has a Ranked Online Mode Now

Middle-earth: Shadow of War is learning some slightly unexpected lessons from contemporary gaming. Last week, we found out it features loot box microtransactions - today we discover it has a ranked online mode.

Social Conquest (as it is somewhat oxymoronically titled) will task players with choosing one of their captured Nemesis Fortresses, outfitting its defenses, appointing an orc Overlord and accompanying captains, then making it available for attack by online players. It's not a far cry from Metal Gear Solid 5's Forward Operating Bases, essentially.

As reported by Eurogamer, attacking in Social Conquest comes in two flavours. Friendly conquests are dry runs - you're not at any risk, but the rewards are comparatively small. In ranked mode, however, players will earn loot boxes (and currency to buy yet more loot boxes) upon victory. The catch: any of your fellow orcs who die in a ranked conquest are lost forever, even in the main campaign.

Splatoon 2: Datamining Seems to Reveal New Maps, Weapons

A datamine of Nintendo's inky third-person shooter Splatoon 2 appears to reveal new content for the game, as well as a potentially historic change to Inkling Lore.

OatmealDome on Reddit posted an extensive list of maps, weapons and other features which have reportedly been pulled from Splatoon 2's update files.

Among the spoils are two additional maps which are in development and currently named Line and Tunnel along with partial files for new versions of the last game's Kelp Dome and Blackbelly Skatepark.

It looks like Salmon Run may also see extra stages, with developers testing maps currently called Shakehouse and Threepoints.

Xbox One Spotify App Confirmed

The until-now unconfirmed Spotify app for Xbox now has a product page on the Xbox Store.

As noted by Gamespot, the product page does lack one crucial feature right now - the ability to actually download the app. We've contacted Xbox for comment on when it might be released, and will update this story as and when it is.

The product page indicates that Spotify will work identically to PS4's version of the app. It's available to both free and premium members, will play in the background of all games, and can be controlled through your smart device app.

Danger Draws Near in Game of Thrones’ Next Episode

This article discusses events previewed in a promo for Game of Thrones Season 7 episode 5, titled "Eastwatch." If you don't wish to know what is coming ahead based on what is released by HBO, read on at your own risk.

Daenerys' desperation to defeat Cersei was on full display in "The Spoils of War," and if the promo for Season 7's fifth episode is any indication, that desperation is beginning to morph into unrelenting brutality as she seeks to claim the Iron Throne.

"Bend the knee and join me, or refuse and die," Dany says to the remaining Lannister forces as she stands alongside a very concerned looking Tyrion in the opening moments of the promo for "Eastwatch." Is this the start of Dany slowly becoming the Mad Queen? "You need to find a way to make her listen," Varys says to Tyrion, likely in reference to whatever rash and/or power-hungry actions Dany has made (or intends to make) in next week's episode.

Game of Thrones Showrunners on Winterfell Homecoming

Full spoilers for Game of Thrones: Season 7 continue below. Check out our review of "The Spoils of War."

The fourth episode of Game of Thrones' seventh season brought with it the return of Arya Stark to her home in Winterfell, which, according to showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, was inspired by the tale of Odysseus.

"The inspiration for the scene was Odysseus returning after his long wanderings. No one recognizes him," Benioff said. In the same way, Arya has gone through a lot since she was last at Winterfell, and both she and her home have changed considerably since she left.
