Star Trek writer and producer Gene Roddenberry wasn't particularly enthused about the casting choice of Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard in The Next Generation, according to the actor.

"Gene had very strongly felt that I was wrong for the role... I am told," Stewart said during a panel at Star Trek Las Vegas (via TrekMovie.com). "I don't know the details, but there was a lot of warfare that went on in the producers offices about that."

Stewart discussed how, after he was discovered by producer Robert Justman, who believed he was the right casting choice, he had a not so great meeting with Roddenberry, who "profoundly disagreed."
