Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville Isn’t a Star Trek Parody

Upon first viewing of the trailer for FOX's new Seth MacFarlane series, The Orville, it might be easy to assume this is a straight Star Trek parody. But The Orville is actually a far cry from Family Guy, much closer to being Star Trek itself than any sort of parody.

For MacFarlane, a self-professed sci-fi nerd, that homage was intentional. With the rise of dystopian science fiction over the years, MacFarlane wanted to create something that was more of a return in the style and tone to the sci-fi shows he loved from the '90s and earlier, something he thinks is missing from the current television landscape.

"What's happened is it's left open a space that has been relatively unoccupied for a while in the genre. ... For me, it's a space that's kind of waiting to be filled in this day and age when we're getting a lot of dystopian science fiction," he said at the 2017 summer TV Critics' Association press tour. "This is sort of an attempt to fill that void in that genre."

During a demonstration with Nintendo in which we tested out all the Metroid amiibo functionality in the upcoming 3DS title, we learned Hard Mode is accessible to all players after they complete the game for the first time.

Pokemon Go: Niantic Working to Resolve Premiere Ball Bug

In the wake of the Legendary raid events, Niantic is looking to fix a bug that occurs while trying to catch raid Pokemon.

The Premier Ball bug is an issue where a Raid Boss will always break out of the last Premier Ball granted to a player for that raid. This is especially frustrating when limited time Legendaries such as Zapdos are currently available. The fix Niantic is currently implementing for this bug is to simply give players an extra Premiere Ball.

The Best Leia Tales Beyond the Movies

Leia Organa made an impression from her first appearance in A New Hope. She stood tall against the intimidating Darth Vader and lied to him, she watched the destruction of her entire freaking planet and kept moving forward, and she helped her would be rescuers make it off the Death Star. She established herself as a take charge individual who was apparently invincible to the headaches tightly wound hair can cause.

The princess from Alderaan continued to showcase her mettle throughout the original trilogy from remaining calm and leading during the Battle of Hoth to killing Jabba the Hutt with the chains he used to enslave her. Leia's story extended into the sequel trilogy with The Force Awakens and will continue in the upcoming The Last Jedi. And that's not all. Her history has expanded across books, comics, and television. You should read and watch these Star Wars stories to get more of Leia.

Opinion: How to Save The Dark Tower

The Dark Tower, adapted from Stephen King’s incredible series of novels, finally hit theaters lacking any sort of critical or commercial splash. We scored the film a 5.0, calling it a “thoroughly average adaptation of some truly incredible source material.” Likewise, while it opened at #1 this past weekend, its $19.5 million draw, adding to the lowest weekend of the summer, didn’t exactly scream a film that’s setting the foundation for a massive cinematic universe.

With Sony insistent that the television series is still moving ahead as planned, here are some ways, from a massive fan of the source material, that I feel The Dark Tower can still be salvaged.
