Ghostbusters Director Responds to Trailer Hate

When the first trailer for the new Ghostbusters hit the net, it caused something of an uproar, the video criticised for both lacking laughs, and being confusing in that it connected the film to the 1984 original while at the same time seeming to be a full-on reboot. It also quickly became the most disliked movie trailer on YouTube.

Director and co-writer Paul Feig hasn’t said much about the furore – being somewhat busy finishing said film – but when he recently stopped by IGN's London office, we asked for his thoughts about the controversy surrounding both the trailer and the film…

“It was very interesting because we were early enough in the process where we didn't have hardly any VFX we could show, we were very early in the process. So we had developed that one big shot of Time Square - we originally had a teaser trailer we were going to put out on the front of Star Wars, and it was really great but it was very... we decided to take a tone that was very serious, just to throw people off a little bit. And then at the last we all kind of decided 'Do we want to go out with that?' So we pulled it back, but we had developed that one shot of Time Square for it, but even at that I didn't think it was refined yet - I wanted to keep working on it.

George Takei on Sulu’s Sexuality in Star Trek Beyond

George Takei has known for a while that Star Trek Beyond's Hikaru Sulu would be openly gay in the new film, and though he's happy there's a gay character in the film, he's not in favor of the decision.

Actor John Cho, who plays Sulu in Star Trek Beyond, revealed his character will have a same-sex partner and a daughter in the new film, making Sulu the first openly LGBTQ character in the series. It's intended as an homage to Takei, who publicly announced he was gay in 2005. Takei, however, doesn't see the gesture that way.

"I'm delighted that there's a gay character," Takei told The Hollywood Reporter. "Unfortunately, it's a twisting of Gene's creation, to which he put in so much thought. I think it's really unfortunate." The prolific actor would have preferred writer Simon Pegg and director Justin Lin to respect creator Gene Roddenberry's vision for the character.

Stranger Things Combines Steven Spielberg and Steven King

Debuting July 15th on Netflix, Stranger Things is a big trip back to the 1980s, in a series not just set in that era but immersed in the vibe of beloved films and books from that time. The set-up involves the disappearance of a boy, Will (Noah Schnapp), and the search that ensues for him – both by his mother (Winona Ryder) and by his friends (Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin and Gaten Matarazzo), who also come across an odd girl, only called Eleven (Millie Brown), with a shaved head and some very powerful abilities.

Evoking the otherworldly encounter stories of Steven Spielberg and the more overt horror/conspiracy elements of John Carpenter, Stranger Things is a very fun mash up of genres, anchored around the strong performance by its child leads. The series is the brainchild of the Duffer Brothers, Ross and Matt, who previously wrote for Wayward Pines and wrote and directed the film Hidden.

Nintendo Thought It Would Sell 100 Million Wii U Units

Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima revealed during the company's recent shareholders meeting that one internal projection for the Wii U was for the console to match the sales of its predecessor, the Wii.

"In an internal sales representative meeting, someone projected that we would sell close to 100 million Wii U systems worldwide," Kimishima said during the meeting. "The thinking was that because Wii sold well, Wii U would follow suit."

Kimishima does not elaborate on how the projection came into play regarding the company's plans to promote and sell the console. The Nintendo president did address a question, however, about reports that he "voiced concern before the launch of the Wii U."
