Scientists Confirm Signs of Liquid Water Found on Mars
Scientists have announced signs of liquid water have been found on the surface of present-day Mars.
Data collected from a NASA satellite and reported in the journal Nature Geoscience reveals dark streaks seen on the surface of the planet are proof of the periodic movement of water. This has huge implications, as it means life - if it ever existed on the Red Planet - could still theoretically persist to today. It also means future astronauts would have a much easier time should they wish to "live off the land".
Though it has been speculated for some time that water could be present in some form on Mars, the proof published today comes in the shape of successfully identified waterlogged molecules — salts known as perchlorates — in readings from orbit. These drop the freezing point of water by 80 degrees and its vaporisation rate by a factor of 10.
