Simon Pegg’s Real Contribution to Star Wars
Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams has shed light on Simon Pegg's involvement in the upcoming film. And while we already knew Pegg had a cameo in the film, Abrams says the actor's behind-the-scenes support was his greatest contribution.
"I will say this in terms of Simon: while he won’t be recognizable in the movie, in all honesty, his role in this – not the performance or the character – but his support and friendship has been massively important and helpful in the process," Abrams told EW of Pegg, who of course also played Scotty in the director's two Star Trek movies.
Automated Lawnmower From iRobot Gets FCC Approval
Consumer robot manufacturer iRobot has moved one step closer to freeing humanity from the shackles of walking behind, or riding on, lawnmowers. Its automated lawn-mowing robot has moved forward in the FCC approval process.
In order to navigate the iRobot lawn-mowing system uses a series of wireless signal beacons staked into the ground around a lawn. According to a Reuters report, the design required a waiver from the FCC.
Normally, the regulating body prohibits operation of a "'fixed outdoor infrastructure' transmitting low-power radio signal without a license."
The Future of Valve According to Valve
IGN Overclocked this week recaps QuakeCon as Brian Albert, Miranda Sanchez, Marty Sliva, and Mitch Dyer talk about Doom multiplayer, Doom map-making, and Fallout 4 mods. The International Dota 2 Championships also wrapped up, and Valve revealed a great deal of what's to come not only for Dota 2, but its Source 2 engine, competitive Counter-Strike, and more.
We also go over the Smach Zero, a fascinating but questionable portable SteamOS device that has us conflicted.
A Closer Look at Captain Phasma’s Armor from The Force Awakens
Today at Disney's D23 Expo, we got a closer look at Captain Phasma's armor from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
An image from May's edition of Vanity Fair confirmed Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie would portray the chrome trooper, but images of her character have been somewhat sparse. Check out the new images we snapped below.
In addition to Captain Phasma, we also got shots of BB-8, First Order troopers, Finn, and more. However, unlike the Phasma armor, these props were already on display once before at Star Wars Celebration. Here they are, in case you missed them.

NBC’s The Player Promises ’80s Action Fun
NBC's new thriller The Player - created by John Rogers (Leverage) - stars Strike Back's Philip Winchester as a former military operative who becomes a reluctant pawn in a perverse game of chance. Wesley Snipes co-stars as the mysterious "pit boss" of a giant game where the stakes are measured in criminal acts and human lives.
Winchester, Snipes, and Rogers all appeared at the TCA Press Tour to answer questions about their series - which premieres September 14th on NBC - and talk about how it marks the return of super-up action movies and TV shows from the past.
"'Ridiculous' is a valid, artistic choice," joked Rogers about The Player's heightened premise. "'Pulp' is the word we really landed on when we were developing the show. You know, to me Shonda Rhimes is 'pulp.' 'Pulp' is any story that's high velocity, big characters making big decisions, big emotional stakes, and every episode is a thrill ride. And it doesn't matter what context it is. We just decided to do it within the genre of action. And, nicely enough, we've all done a lot of action. And, of course, Wesley has done a lot of action, Philip has done a lot of action, our stunt guys are some of the best in the business. So we all have a very good idea of what you can really do and what goes overboard, mostly when Philip and the stunt guys and Wesley are really doing it. So we want to be very careful about that. But, look, you're showing up to have a good time and have your fun ride, so we're going to knock your socks off every week."
