Comic Book Reviews for April 22, 2015

Convergence continues at DC Comics, bringing the past to the present and smashing it together for your own perverse pleasure. We got the next chapter in the Batman: Arkham Knight prequel, too.

Marvel has been in the news this week for its big twist in All-New X-Men. We review that issue along with the finale to the X-Men/Guardians Black Vortex crossover and the next issue of Star Wars.

Over in indie-land, we got the debut of Chip Zdarsky's Kaptara, another issue of Ninjak, and some more Adventure Time goodness.

We were down a reviewer this week, so help us out by giving us your thoughts on this week's releases in the comments.

NASA Ramps Up Hunt For Extraterrestrial Life On Other Planets

NASA is making progress with its aim to finds signs of alien life on other planets with the launch of a new dedicated initiative called the Nexus for Exoplanet System Science (NExSS).

NExSS brings researchers across numerous scientific fields with the goal to study exoplanets, of which there are more than 1,000 found to date with thousands to be confirmed, to understand their potential habitability. The initiative will develop how to look for life on exoplanets, help classify the diversity of worlds and develop the technologies needed to search for extraterrestrial life.

“This interdisciplinary endeavor connects top research teams and provides a synthesized approach in the search for planets with the greatest potential for signs of life,” says Jim Green, NASA’s Director of Planetary Science in a statement. “The hunt for exoplanets is not only a priority for astronomers, it’s of keen interest to planetary and climate scientists as well.”

Edgar Wright’s Story Still in Ant-Man Movie

Writer-directors Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) have received expanded Ant-Man writing credits after arbitration.

According to The Wrap, Wright and Cornish, who wrote the initial Ant-Man screenplay together, have received sole story credit as well as joint writing credit with Adam McKay (Step Brothers) and lead actor Paul Rudd.

Wright and Cornish worked together as a writing duo for the first version of the script, while McKay and Rudd wrote together for the revised script that was used to shoot the film.

Edgar Wright was originally supposed to direct the script he wrote with Joe Cornish, but left the project because of creative differences. Peyton Reed (Yes Man) was hired to replace Wright as director.

Sony Previews SPECTRE, Pixels, Goosebumps & More

Sony Pictures presented attendees at Wednesday's industry trade expo CinemaCon an advanced look at their forthcoming slate, including extended peeks at SPECTRE, Pixels, Hotel Transylvania 2, Goosebumps, and The Walk to name a few.

New studio boss Tom Rothman introduced a CinemaCon exclusive scene from the 24th James Bond film, SPECTRE, with a pre-recorded message from director Sam Mendes asking the attendees and press not to reveal the scene's big spoiler.

What I can reveal is that it's a scene between 007 and Miss Moneypenny set in James Bond's sparsely decorated London flat. Yes, we get to see Bond's apartment in the film. There was also a sizzle reel showing more new footage not seen in the trailer including a very sexy encounter between 007 and Monica Bellucci's Lucia Sciarra.

During last weekend's Star Wars Celebration, star Oscar Isaac made the bold claim that his character Poe Dameron is the "best frickin' pilot in the galaxy," which is pretty much fightin' words if you're Han Solo. IGN recently had the opportunity to speak with Isaac about the beautifully crafted sci-fi tale Ex Machina, which goes into wide release on Friday, April 24.

During the course of the conversation, we touched on his role in Star Wars, as well as the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, in which he plays the titular villain.
