Platinum Games Appeals to Xbox to Help It Make Scalebound: ‘Phil! Let’s Do It Together!’

Platinum Games wants to return to Scalebound, the dragon-filled Xbox exclusive it cancelled in 2017 – and has appealed to Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer to begin those discussions.

Speaking to IGN Japan, Platinum president Atsushi Inaba explained that Scalebound creator Hideki Kamiya, “has been talking about wanting to work on Scalebound again for a while.”

Kamiya himself added: “I’d like to appeal to Phil Spencer directly! Let’s do it, Phil!”

Kamiya has not been shy about expressing his regret over the game's cancellation, and the develoepr has said before that that it would love to return to the game with Microsoft's permisssion.

However, Inaba made clear that this isn't an idle wish, and they'd like to reopen talks with Micriosoft about the idea:

“Often in an interview you might hear a developer politely saying, ‘Yes, if we had the opportunity we’d love to work on that again’, but we don’t mean it that way. Both Kamiya and I are serious – we really would love to work on Scalebound again. I’d like to discuss it with Microsoft properly.”

Kamiya went further: "Development had progressed a fair way, and it seems pointless for Microsoft to just hold on to that and not do anything with it.”

Kamiya then switched to English to say, “Phil! Phil! Let’s do it together!"

Bruce Willis and Princess Diana Top the Nominees for the 2021 Razzie Awards

Just a day before contenders for 2022 Oscars are announced, the Razzies has revealed its nominees for worst movies and film performances of 2021. Bruce Willis in particular is being roasted this year, with the Razzies dedicating an entire category to his eight worst film performances in the past year. Yes, you read that right. Bruce Willis starred in more movies than most actors get in a decade, including low-budget action flicks like American Siege, Apex, and Midnight in the Switchgrass.

At the top (or maybe bottom) of the pack is Netflix's Diana, the live stage musical filmed for streaming audiences, with nine nominations, including for worst picture, actor, and actress. The Guardian called it "a musical mess to rival Cats" and "the year's most hysterically awful hate-watch" for its depiction of the late royal family princess. It's similarly nominated for worst director, supporting actor, and supporting actress.

Netflix also takes second place in total nominations for The Woman in the Window, the psychological thriller starring Amy Adams, taking home five nominations, including for worst picture. Ironically, it boasts one of the more bankable casts in Razzie history, including Gary Oldman, Anthony Mackie, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Julianne Moore.

Following the pack is Karen, the dark-comedy thriller about a racist white woman stalking a young black couple living in the surburbs. You might remember it from the too-bad-to-be-real trailer that went semi-viral last year. Richard Roeper of Ebert and Roeper fame called it an "extended SNL parody of a Jordan Peele film."

Both Space Jam: A New Legacy and Dear Evan Hansen also received four nominations, including for worst picture, while Mark Wahlberg's Infinite and Renny Harlin's The Misfits close out with three nominations a piece.

GTA Remastered Trilogy May Have Sold Up to 10 Million Units Despite Technical Issues

The GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition, which launched back in November, landed with a whole host of technical issues that earned plenty of criticism from fans (and us). But that doesn't seem to have stopped it from selling very, very well.

Take-Two just gave its quarterly earnings report, during which the company said the trilogy, "significantly exceed[ed] our commercial expectations." That's nice to hear, even if it doesn't really tell the whole story, as companies can essentially set whatever metrics they want internally and then say a game exceeded them.

But a bit of clever math on the part of VGC might have gotten at its actual sales metrics. Take-Two reported that the entire GTA series to date has sold over 370 million copies, while GTA V has sold over 160 million on its own as of the quarter's end in January. That's up from the numbers they reported last quarter of 355 million for the series, and 155 million for GTA V alone. If you look back at earnings reports from recent past quarters, it's fairly consistent that GTA V's sales line up exactly with overall series sales increases — but there's a 10 million unit discrepancy.

With no other major GTA titles releasing during that period, that makes it reasonably likely that the GTA Trilogy was largely responsible for the remaining 10 million sales — and that's just from its November release through December, not counting what it may have sold in January or the first week of February.

Despite its launch issues, Take-Two has been contrite both at launch and now and has committed to fixing the trilogy's issues. It has already released some major updates, and more are on the way in the future. An eventual mobile release for Android and iOS is also still in the cards for the first half of this year. Meanwhile, an upgraded version of GTA V is headed to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on March 15.

Just last week, Rockstar Games revealed that a new GTA game was indeed in development, and though we didn't get more details on it today, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick affirmed to IGN that Rockstar is fully in charge of the decision to reveal more information in the future.

Epic’s Tim Sweeney Says Fortnite Won’t Be Updated To Run On Steam Deck

When Valve's Steam Deck releases later this month, it should be possible to play Fortnite on the new handheld. However, it won't be easy.

In series of tweets posted over the weekend, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney told fans that there no current plans to update Fortnite so that it works with Proton — the compatibility layer that allows Windows games to run on Steam Deck's default operating system. As a result, Fortnite fans will have to jump through a few additional hoops if they want to get the battle royale running on Valve's handheld.

The crux of the problem is Epic's Easy Anti-Cheat system, which is not currently compatible with Proton. With Linux being a more open-ended platform than Windows, Sweeney says he's not confident that it will be possible to combat cheating "at scale" on the platform.

"We don't have confidence that we’d be able to combat cheating at scale under a wide array of kernel configurations including custom ones," Sweeney said.

When another user accused of Sweeney of "not trust his own product," he pointed to Fortnite's sheer size as the issue.

"With regard to anti-cheat on the Linux platform supporting custom kernels and the threat model to a game of Fortnite's size, YES THAT'S EXACTLY RIGHT!" Sweeney replied.

Sweeney's comments are somewhat at odds with his previous statements, in which he said that Epic was looking to better support Wine — of which Proton is a version — as "a solution for running Epic Games store window titles." He also previously called Steam Deck an "amazing move by Valve."

None of this necessarily precludes Fortnite fans from running it on Steam Deck. It just means that they will have to install Windows on the device rather than make use of the available default options. Either way, Fortnite fans wanting to play on handheld are probably better off just downloading it on Nintendo Switch.

Take-Two CEO: More GTA 6 News Will Be Shared on Rockstar’s Schedule

Grand Theft Auto 6 has been officially announced, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to start seeing a wave of new info just yet. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick says that the decision to reveal more information lies firmly with Rockstar Games.

Speaking to IGN ahead of Take-Twos quarterly financials, Zelnick says that its labels “always decide when and how to announce their upcoming products,” including the recent GTA 6 confirmation. Zelnick adds, “Obviously people need to stay tuned, a lot more information to be shared and Rockstar will do so in time.”

Given the secret nature of the game, Zelnick would not divulge any specific details. However, as CEO the goal for the next Grand Theft Auto is to build on the success of Grand Theft Auto 5, which is one of the best-selling games of all time. This has set a high bar for Rockstar to clear.

“Each iteration for all of our successful franchises at this company, all of them, has always done better than the one before,” Zelnick says. “I’m not saying that’ll happen again, I’m not saying that’s guaranteed, but that’s certainly our goal.”

With 160 million worldwide sales, this is certainly a big lift for Rockstar. But at the same time, Grand Theft 5 has been out for nearly nine years, so there’s no telling how Grand Theft Auto 6 could do in the same timeframe.

Grand Theft Auto 5 has found tremendous success thanks to Grand Theft Auto Online. The online multiplayer mode has kept GTA 5 going strong for nearly nine years, but the fans are eagerly anticipating a new Grand Theft Auto game.

And while Rockstar’s GTA 6 confirmation is a start, there's still a lot we don't know. Current reports suggest Grand Theft Auto 6 might not arrive until 20245 or 2025, and that it may be smaller, size-wise than GTA 5 with plans to grow the game post-launch.

Fans are so eager for new info, they're even looking at the recently released GTA Trilogy for clues.

Take-Two CEO Says Play-to-Earn Games Aren’t Currently Entertaining; But They Could Be Someday

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has historically voiced a healthy mixture of curiosity and caution whenever it comes to new trends in the games industry, and thus far, his stance on blockchain and NFTs has been no exception.

Previously, Zelnick has expressed interest in blockchain technology as technology, but thought its uses for cryptocurrency and NFTs are solidly in the camp of speculation. Only a financial quarter later, that view hasn't changed, even though his company's visible interest in the tech has grown.

Take-Two announced its intent to acquire Zynga back in January, and with it, its interest in NFTs and recently hired of a VP of blockchain gaming. Speaking to IGN to coincide with Take-Two's third-quarter earnings today, Zelnick affirms his lack of interest in speculation, saying it always ends badly for at least some.

But he does express optimism about the opportunities in the space. He says a lot of industry talent is moving into the blockchain space, and "where talent is, the market follows."

Other AAA companies like Take-Two seem almost unanimously optimistic on the subject, with Square Enix, EA, Sega, Epic Games, and Konami all expressing interest, at minimum, if not outright announcing endeavors. But I asked Zelnick if his stance on blockchain and NFTs has changed at all given recent gaming community backlash to certain implementations, notably Stalker 2 and the more recent backpedaling by publisher Team17 on Worms.

"It's unfolded exactly as I expected, which is when everything is going up inexorably, people are pretty excited," he replies. "When things start going down...then certain people get burned, and they begin to say, 'Woah, this isn't what we expected. This isn't an entertainment experience, this is something else.' And my view is that if it's an entertainment experience, again, you want to make sure that consumers always get more value than they pay for, always. And if it's not an entertainment experience, then it's a gambling experience, and it has to be regulated and it has to be transparent," Zelnick says.

"And so far, the play-to-earn games aren't either one. They're not highly entertaining, and they're not regulated nor are their economics transparent. And I think consumers are having predictable feelings about that — none of this surprises me at all. But let's not call into question underlying technology just because so far the expression of that technology has been inside of speculation. Speculations always come to an end; the tech will still exist. And it all depends what you do with it. I remain sanguine that there's a lot to be done with it that's exciting."

Take-Two just announced its third-quarter earnings, posting net revenue of $903 million and reporting that GTA V has now sold over 160 million copies. The publisher has upped its projections for the coming quarter as it prepares to release WWE 2K22 and Tiny Tina's Wonderlands in March. It's also given a slightly firmer window for Marvel's Midnight Suns, which is now planned for fall of 2022.
