Funimation Becomes Part of Crunchyroll to Create Anime Super-Service

Anime streaming platform Funimation has been folded into one-time rival Crunchyroll to form an anime super-service.

More than 1,600 hours of anime has been added to Crunchyroll at no extra cost, following the merger between the two that completed in August last year. 80% of what Funimation calls its "most popular series" will be available on Crunchyroll by the end of March – that includes My Hero Academia, Tokyo Ghoul, Cowboy Bebop, and much more.

You can see a full list of Funimation shows on Crunchyroll here. Funimation will continue to operate as normal for the time being, but the move makes clear that Crunchyroll will be the main platform going forward, and any new anime starting in spring 2022 will only be available on Crunchyroll. Funimation will only continue to update series already hosted on the service.

The move will also bring Funimation subsidiary Wakanim, and Crunchyroll's VRV into the core Crunchyroll subscription.

CEO Colin Decker said: "When we brought Funimation and Crunchyroll together last year, our top priority was to put fans first. Unifying all of our brands and services under the Crunchyroll brand globally enables us to offer more value than ever before as we combine subs, dubs, simulcasts, library, music, movies, manga—all into one subscription.

"The new Crunchyroll is the realisation of a dream, and we are grateful to the creators of anime and the millions of fans who have joined us in making the community what it is today."

Funimation Premium currently costs $5.99 (£4.99) a month while Crunchyroll starts at $7.99 (£6.50) a month.

Anyone already subscribed to Funimation, Wakanim, or VRV will be offered 60 days of Crunchyroll Premium for free. Current subscribers to the non-Crunchyroll platforms will be emailed within the next few days (from March 1) to be offered the free 60 days.

Marvel Netflix Shows and Agents of SHIELD Coming to Disney+ This Month

Disney has announced that the Marvel Netflix shows will be added to the Disney+ library this month. Additionally, the ABC series Agents of SHIELD will also be added to the streaming service.

All of the Netflix live-action Marvel shows will be added to Disney+ on March 16. They are Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher. Agents of SHIELD will also be added at the same time, meaning Disney+ will be the place to watch almost all of Marvel's live-action output.

With the Netflix shows being mature-rated, Disney+ will also roll out new parental controls in order to help people prevent their children from seeing Kingpin destroy a man's head with a car door, as well as the many other incredibly dark themes and scenes found across this collection of Marvel shows.

All these shows will be available on Disney+ in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. Disney promises the shows will be added to other Disney+ territories later this year.

The live-action Marvel shows first seen on Netflix - often referred to as the Marvel Knights or Defenders shows - are a bit of a mixed bag. They include what is seen as some of the best Marvel live-action stories in Daredevil and Jessica Jones, as well as some of the worst in The Defenders and Iron Fist. While there is much debate around if they are considered MCU canon, the lines have definitely been blurred thanks to Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk featuring in Hawkeye.

Nvidia Suffers Major Cyberattack, Hackers Threaten to Reverse Crypto Mining Limiter

Nvidia has confirmed that it was recently the victim of a cyberattack, following reports last week that its internal systems were compromised.

In a statement sent to IGN, an Nvidia spokesperson confirmed that on February 23, it was aware of a "cybersecurity incident which impacted IT resources." Nvidia also confirmed that the "threat actor took employee credentials and some Nvidia proprietary information from its systems" and that the hacker or group involved in the attack had begun leaking it online.

Although Nvidia did not disclose what "proprietary information" was stolen, ransomware group LAPSUS$ told our sister site PCMag that it stole 1TB of data, including files detailing Nvidia's hardware and software. Most notably, the group claims that it has files for a GPU driver, which would restore the full Ethereum mining potential in the RTX 30 series of GPUs.

Last May, Nvidia announced that newly manufactured RTX 30 GPUs would be altered by reducing the ETH hash rate, thus making the difficult-to-buy GPUs less desirable to crypto miners. It's important to note that this recent cyberattack has no direct relation to a recent program meant to restore the ETH hash rate on Nvidia RTX 30 and A-series GPUs, which turned out to be malware.

LAPSUS$ told PCMag that Nvidia has not reached out to the group after it demanded the GPU giant pay them in cryptocurrency to ensure the data was not leaked. Nvidia told IGN that it is working on analyzing the information that was stolen and that it does "not anticipate any disruption to [its] business or ability to serve [its] customers as a result of the incident."

Graphics cards, particularly the RTX 30 series, have been desirable for cryptocurrency mining because graphics cards are faster and more powerful than using a processor. GPUs can also perform more calculations and decode different hashes, which allow a higher output on mining for new cryptocurrencies.

Elden Ring: George R.R. Martin Is Very Happy With the Reviews

Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin is very happy with how Elden Ring has been received.

Martin published a new blog post saying the reviews for Elden Ring - which have made it one of the best reviewed games in modern history - were "music to the ears".

"The wait is over," the legendary author wrote. "Years in the making, ELDEN RING was released last week, and has been taking the gaming world by storm.

But don’t listen to me. From Software brought me on to do their worldbuilding, so I can hardly pretend to be objective."

Martin went onto point to some examples of almost universally good reviews, and wrote, "And… well, there’s more. Lots more."

Miyazaki previously commented that Martin, who was brought on years ago to develop the world and history of Elden Ring, may be shocked by what became of his characters. But Martin acknowledged that Elden Ring's launch last week took the gaming sphere by storm and congratulated Miyazaki on his achievement.

He said: "Almost all the credit should go to Hidetaka Miyazaki and his astonishing team of games designers who have been labouring on this game for half a decade or more, determined to create the best videogame ever. I am honoured to have met them and worked with them, and to have played a part, however small, in creating this fantastic world and making Elden Ring the landmark megahit that it is."

The two fantasy legends seem equally thrilled to have worked together, as Miyazaki commented recently that working with Martin was like "speaking with an old friend". Miyazaki has also talked about the restraints he put on Martin's contributions, and how they benefited both the writer and the developers.

In our 10/10 review, IGN said: "Elden Ring is a massive iteration on what FromSoftware began with the Souls series, bringing its relentlessly challenging combat to an incredible open world that gives us the freedom to choose our own path."

Euphoria Is Now HBO’s Second-Biggest Show After Game of Thrones

Euphoria is now HBO's second-most watched show, losing out only to the (likely impossible to beat) Game of Thrones.

Per Variety, HBO announced that Euphoria - its Zendaya-led coming-of-age drama - is now averaging 16.3 million viewers per episode. HBO only began measuring viewership in the current fashion in 2004, but by those measures it's the network's second-biggest average viewership.

Euphoria's Season 2 finale aired on February 27 and drew in 6.6 million viewers, while its premiere is currently approaching 19 million viewers. It's also been HBO Max's most popular show for seven weeks straight, and its final episode made it the top title in Europe and Latin America too.

Game of Thrones' final season averaged 44.2 million viewers per episode, so despite Euphoria being incredibly successful, it doesn't quite come close. After all, Game of Thrones was – as IGN said in its finale review – "a true cultural obsession" the likes of which we'll quite possibly never see again.

Discussing the second season of Euphoria, IGN said that its lead character Rue Bennett (played by Zendaya) is a key to draw to the series and lovable because of her humanity, not in spite of it.

HBO Max added a ton of new films and TV shows to its platform last month including the second season of Ridley Scott's Raised By Wolves alongside Steven Soderbergh's Kimi.

The Batman, Morbius, And More Pulled from Release in Russia After Invasion of Ukraine

Editor's Note: The war in Ukraine is an ongoing, painful and emotive topic. IGN urges community members to be respectful when engaging in conversation around this subject and does not endorse harassment of any kind.

Major Hollywood studios have begun pausing their film releases in Russia – including The Batman, Morbius, and more – following the invasion of Ukraine.

Yesterday, Disney announced that it would pull all theatrical releases in Russia due to the “unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and the tragic humanitarian crisis”.

“We will make future business decisions based on the evolving situation,” added Disney. “In the meantime, given the scale of the emerging refugee crisis, we are working with our NGO partners to provide urgent aid and other humanitarian assistance.”

Its upcoming animated film Turning Red was due to premiere in Russia on March 10.

Warner Bros. soon followed, confirming that The Batman would not debut in the country.

“In light of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, WarnerMedia is pausing the release of its feature film The Batman in Russia,” it confirmed. “We will continue to monitor the situation as it evolves. We hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to this tragedy.”

Additionally, Warner Bros. was due to release Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore on April 14, as well as the upcoming DC League of Super-Pets on May 19.

Following the news from Disney and Warner Bros, Sony Pictures added that it too would suspend its upcoming releases in Russia.

“Given the ongoing military action in Ukraine and the resulting uncertainty and humanitarian crisis unfolding in that region, we will be pausing our planned theatrical releases in Russia, including the upcoming release of Morbius,” said a Sony Pictures spokesperson. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been impacted and hope this crisis will be resolved quickly.”

This follows a call from the Ukrainian Film Academy for an international boycott against Russian cinema and the Russian film industry.

The petition (via change.org) calls for a boycott from producers and distributors, as well as international film festivals “not to allow in the competition and non-competition programs films produced by the Russian Federation or in co-production with it.”

Meanwhile, the Motion Picture Association also issued the following statement:

“The MPA stands with the international community in upholding the rule of law and condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. On behalf of our member companies, who lead the film, TV, and streaming industry, we express our strongest support for Ukraine’s vibrant creative community who, like all people, deserve to live and work peacefully.”

Atari Is Publishing Kombinera, Its First Original Game In Years

Today, Atari has unveiled a brand new puzzle-platformer game called Kombinera, which is coming to pretty much any platform you can think of this April.

Kombinera is a new Atari IP where players take control of differently colored balls and use them and their unique abilities to work their way through over 300 environments and puzzles. The balls all move in unison, but different colors will interact with puzzles in different ways, requiring concentration and puzzle-solving to move forward.

The game is developed by St. Louis-based Graphite Lab, with Atari publishing. Atari's role is, per CEO Wade Rosen, a recommitment to publish more games going forward after a significant loss of momentum in the last decade. Since September, Atari has published a number of "Recharged" versions of older arcade games such as Brick Breaker, Asteroids, and others. But Kombinera is the first new IP to come out of this initiative, and according to Rosen, the first of many to come.

Rosen tells IGN that Atari's upcoming release calendar has the publisher releasing, on average, a new game every month for the next 13 months. That includes a mixture of classic IP (like the Recharged games), brand new IP, and new games from existing franchises. For now, Atari is working entirely with external studios, though Rosen suggests they may one day bring development in-house. He says that in the coming months and years, we can expect to "see Atari collaborate with a variety of studios, from small independents to larger studios with well-established reputations."

One key component of all of Atari's plans, including the brightly-colored Kombinera, is to reinvigorate the arcade-y feel that was synonymous with Atari games back in the day.

"Kombinera is a puzzle-platformer that has some of the personality traits of an Atari arcade game," Rosen says. "What made those arcade experiences memorable, and something you wanted to return to, was that they were immediately accessible and yet layered with depth and surprises that you discovered as you mastered the game."

What Rosen is surprisingly candid about is Atari's place in the wider gaming consciousness in 2022. He recognizes that it isn't the same well-known company it once was with the disappearance of arcades and its move into a quieter publishing role. But he wants to change that, beginning with Kombinera:

"We are in an interesting moment in the lifespan of Atari," he says. "It is an iconic brand that has a natural place in pop culture as much as it does games. Atari appears in film, television, art, music and fashion — and it feels natural. It belongs. Yet, despite the brand's roots in video games, today’s Atari has less presence and less relevancy in gaming culture. You might say the brand is out of balance. A modern Atari will find that balance, where its role in gaming culture is in parity with its role in pop culture."

Kombinera is planned for launch on PC via Steam and Epic, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, Atari VCS, iOS, and Android in April 2022.

Kevin Feige Calls Doctor Strange ‘Anchor’ of the MCU

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has called Doctor Strange the "anchor of the Marvel Cinematic Universe" in a speech honouring Benedict Cumberbatch's achievements.

Avengers: Endgame changed everything. The Avengers may have defeated Thanos, but we also saw the fall of some of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes – the death of Iron Man, Black Widow, and even the retirement of Captain America.

Of course, that leads to the question of who will lead the MCU in Endgame's wake. During a ceremony recognizing Benedict Cumberbatch’s addition to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Marvel boss Kevin Feige hinted that it could all be down to Doctor Strange.

“Benedict has turned this character into an icon, appearing in a historic three of the top six films of all time,” Feige said (via Variety). “It's been quite a journey: I remember our very first meeting was set up as a general, and we wanted to pitch him this great character – and before we could, he said, 'So tell me about Doctor Strange,' because you knew. Because somewhere you knew what this could be."

And you’ve always seen the tremendous potential in this character. Because of that, you’ve become the anchor of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the only actor capable of guiding us through the madness of the Multiverse.”

Of course, Doctor Strange is no stranger to the Avengers in the original comic books. He’s led the Avengers to victory at various points throughout history, with an ever-changing lineup that is now reflected in the MCU.

Doctor Strange has appeared in not only team-up movies and his own solo films, but has appeared in other MCU characters' outings, including Thor: Ragnarok and his recent pivotal appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Given the MCU's multiverse is now a running theme in multiple movies and TV shows – including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – it looks as though he’s going to be heavily involved in the MCU going forward, perhaps moreso than any other hero.

After all, by cracking open the multiverse, he’s opened up numerous possibilities, including the appearance of classic X-Men characters, not to mention a mysterious new villain. Feige has previously called Endgame the 'final' Avengers movie, but we wouldn't be surprised to see Strange leading a new team of some kind in future.

GTA Trilogy Gets Its First Patch in Almost 3 Months

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy has gotten its first patch in nearly three months, which seeks to improve the three games' overall stability and visuals.

The trilogy launched back in November 2021 with myriad performance issues but developer Rockstar has been quiet on it since December 3, when it released its previous 1.03 update.

The latest 1.04 patch, now available on all platforms and affecting all three GTA games in the collection, will also fix an issue where players couldn't retry a mission from the latest checkpoint, and fixes certain collision issues.

Rockstar appears to have made good use of the three month wait as the patch notes feature more than 120 separate, detailed updates to GTA: The Trilogy.

In Grand Theft Auto III there are fixes to, for example, misplaced textures and text on the Chinatown market arches, Claude not looking over his shoulder when using the rear facing camera, and an issue with the 'K-JAH Radio' icon.

In Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Rockstar has improved windows on the Moist Palms Hotel, fixed an issue that resulted in BJ appearing incorrectly during the cutscene after purchasing Sunshine Autos, and improved the collision near the parking lot outside the Print Works.

San Andreas received updates that improved the High Fade haircut, audio during the mission “Sweet's Girl”, and the UI on the driving school TV.

The Definitive Edition of GTA Trilogy arrived in November last year, comprising GTA 3, GTA: Vice City, and GTA: San Andeas – but it had a very rough launch. Rockstar has since provided multiple patches aiming to clean up the new versions of the classic games inside, and even offered PC players free games as recompense. In our original 5/10 review, IGN said GTA: The Trilogy "is defective, disappointing, and surprisingly disrespectful to three classic games and their many legions of fans."

The collection appears to have sold very well despite the problems, and Strauss Zelnick – CEO of Rockstar parent company Take-Two – has since called those issues a 'glitch' that was 'resolved'.
