The Surge Has a Release Date
Deck 13’s action-RPG, The Surge will release on May 16 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
There’s also a new trailer which shows Warren smacking a machine to death with a futuristic hammer. And there’s a guy who looks a bit like Lex Luthor, complete with a yellow version of Lex’s iconic Superman-bashing suit.
From the same team responsible for Lords of the Fallen, The Surge will attempt to be something more than a Sci-Fi Dark Souls. Just last month, IGN caught up with Deck 13 head of game design Adam Hetenyi to chat about The Surge while also getting some hands-on time.
Superman Star Henry Cavill Joins Mission: Impossible 6
Henry Cavill, well known for playing Superman in Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, will be taking on a role in the upcoming sixth instalment in the Mission: Impossible franchise.
Director Christopher McQuarrie, who has also written the script for the sixth film, "asked" Cavill to join the cast on Instagram last night.
The accompanying caption said: "Say @henrycavill. Had a thought. Curious if you're interested in a role in the 6th installment of Mission: Impossible. No pressure."
After Cavill accepted, McQuarrie followed up with some caveats: "Must enjoy extreme heights, high speeds, motor vehicles of all varieties (especially aircraft), practical stunts, firearms, and sporadic exposition. All good?"
Mads Mikkelsen Walked Out of an Audition for Fantastic Four
Rogue One star Mads Mikkelsen once auditioned for the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot, but the direction he was given during it led him to abandoning the audition.
Mikkelsen shared his disastrous audition while doing an interview with Short List, saying that being asked “to pretend to extend his arms like a rubber man” was the last straw for the veteran actor.
“I think I walked out on the Fantastic Four one,” Mikkelsen said. “I think I actually said, ‘I can’t do it. It’s not about you, I’m sorry, this is wrong.’”
Mikkelsen's description indicates he was likely auditioning for the role of Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic. The part of Reed Richards would go on to be played by Miles Teller in the Josh Trank-directed Fantastic Four reboot. Though the film did not fare well critically or commercially, Teller has said he would do a sequel.
Why Emperor Palpatine Deserves a Spin-Off Movie
As the Emperor of the Galactic Empire, Sheev Palpatine has a bit of a reputation. The ruling Sith keeps a tight grip on the officers and Imperial leaders in his closest circles and uses them to control the galaxy. He emanates power and fear, and on the rare occasions he doesn't get his way, he can always resort to wielding Force lightning.
Palpatine had quite the rise to the top. He began as a humble senator on Naboo and through skilled manipulation and careful nudging, he managed to land the highest seat in the Republic Senate. The best part? He made it look like a gracious climb up the ladder that he took upon himself begrudgingly. He was masterful with his poker face.
Zelda Is Secretly an Incredible Multiplayer Experience
The week before The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild released, there were only three of us in the office who were able to play it. We spent that entire week pulling each other into meeting rooms, sharing the incredible things we found or mechanics we discovered out of earshot of anyone who wanted to avoid spoilers. And then the game came out, and it kept happening with the addition of more and more people in our office who found things the three of us hadn’t. And now the game has been out for a month, and it’s still happening. It’s happening on Reddit, and on YouTube, and our ‘holy crap, I found this!’ has turned into ‘holy crap, check out what this person found!’ and there’s no end to that marvel in sight.
IGN UK Podcast #375: Matrix Rebooted
Nearly 20 years after the original introduced us to slow-mo bullet limbo, the Matrix is being reloaded. Well, rebooted. We don't know how we feel about that - but we'll say some things about it anyway.
We do know how we feel about good games writing though, and an old classic on the PS Vita that you should absolutely be playing right now. WAIT - NOT RIGHT NOW. Go listen to the podcast first.

Opinion: There Are Too Many Marvel Comics
Is the comic book industry in trouble right now? It depends largely on whom you ask. New comic shops are springing up all over, but other shops seem to be shutting down almost as rapidly. And while there are more comics being published than ever, that's not necessarily a good thing. Forget Peak TV; we've reached the era of Peak Comics. And no publisher is doing more to flood the market than Marvel.
You can see this disparity in Diamond Comics' sales figures for January 2017. As Comichron reports, January saw more comics shipped to stores than any month in the past 20 years. It even managed to top January 2015, the month where Marvel sold nearly a million copies of Star Wars #1. But while more comics were sold in January, publishers weren't necessarily making more money. Total dollar sales for comics in January were still down 7.5% compared to the previous month.
Super Bomberman R Receives ‘Significant Upgrade’
Title Update 1.2 has been released for Super Bomberman R, and with it, a fix for control issues some players have suffered during online battles.
Konami says the problems with controls in an online environment has been “greatly reduced” by a "significant upgrade," and there are plans to release future updates to further improve online controls and enhance the overall online experience.
Also in the update is the ability to select the Room Type when creating a room to host an online free battle. By choosing Room Number, only players with said number can join the game. Think of it as a private match.
The full list of fixes read as:
- Adjustments have been made to reduce the input latency.
Mass Effect: Andromeda Day One Patch Won’t Alter Animations
Mass Effect: Andromeda lead designer, Ian Frazier says the game’s day one patch will not alter the game's animations.
Following Andromeda's early access trial, much has been made of the game in motion on social media. When asked about whether a release day patch could see changes on Twitter, Frazier’s response was:
@JohnCharling At day 1? No, that ship has sailed. We'll have more patches later on, but exactly what goes into them is still in discussion.
Nintendo Plans To Double Switch Production
Nintendo is doubling down on the Switch, according to sources speaking to The Wall Street Journal. On account of strong demand the company reportedly now plans to manufacture at least 16 million consoles over the fiscal year starting April 1, twice its initial plan.
The Switch went on sale around the world on March 3 and saw record-breaking sales across several territories. Across the Americas, Europe, and Australia Nintendo confirmed the Switch had sold more in its launch weekend than any other Nintendo hardware in history.
