House of the Dragon New Trailer Hones in on its Queenly Conflict

House of the Dragon’s release approaches like a dragon in the sky, and a new trailer released focuses on the action, drama, and the difficult choice of choosing a heir to the Iron Throne. The Targaryens are in power, at least for now, and the trailer teases the beginning of the end.

The HBO series is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and will follow House Targaryen before their spectacular fall and the subsequent Targaryen civil war, also known as the Dance of the Dragons.

House of the Dragon, which is based on Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin, will not follow Game of Thrones’ more linear structure and will instead jump around in time. This non-linearity means the cast will be portrayed at various ages, which we get a glimpse at in the trailer with its female leads. The trailer, of course, also gives us a glimpse at its dragons, who really just need a good head scratch.

House of the Dragon will be at San Diego Comic-Con this Saturday at 11:30am in Hall H. The panel will feature much of the cast as well as co-creators George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal and co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik.

Be sure to check out everything you need to know about the prequel so you’re all caught up before it airs on August 20 on HBO. If you’re still pining for more Game of Thrones content, be sure to check out our list of the best Game of Thrones episodes.

Uncharted, The Last of Us Director Opens New Studio, Wildflower Interactive

Former Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us director Bruce Straley has opened up a new studio called Wildflower Interactive. The studio is made up of developers who’ve worked on games such as Call of Duty, Abzu, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, and Astroneer.

“In 2017 I left the industry not sure if I wanted to make games anymore,” says Straley. But the longer I was away, I kept thinking about this medium, and everything yet to be done and everything I wanted to do still. And this idea kept following me. So I grabbed some friends and we started prototyping.”

According to Wildflower Interactive’s website, the studio is aiming to create “small-ish”, creatively charged, and uniquely-stylized games. While the studio didn’t reveal any other information about any projects, it is currently embracing remote work. It looks like Wildfire Interactive is still in early development as they are hiring for roles such as COO, audio designer, character designer, and environmental artist.

Wildfire Interactive’s current employees include:

  • Almudena Soria Sancho – Animation
  • Wouter Gort, Eyton Zana – Art
  • Doug Holder, Arno Azar, Nicholas Lance, Liz Fiacco – Design
  • Cosmo Fumo, Ole Ciliox – Programming
  • Vivian Alcala – Production
  • Bruce Straley – Director | Studio

When Straley left Naughty Dog in 2017, he had no announcements about his next steps but wanted to “continue the journey into the creative process.”

Everything Everywhere All At Once Returns to Theaters With Eight Minutes of Bloopers

We’re still in the multiverse, it seems. Everything Everywhere All At Once is coming back to theaters yet again on July 29 and will include eight minutes of bloopers and a new introduction from the directors, Deadline reports.

The film stars Michelle Yeoh as a Chinese American woman who finds herself in the middle of an interdimensional rupture that unravels reality, forcing her to become an unlikely hero. She must channel her newfound powers as the fate of the world, and her family, hangs in the balance.

Everything Everywhere All At Once first released in March of this year and took off to arguably become one of the best independent films of all time. It already returned to theatres once back in May after its initial run concluded. It is A24’s highest grossing film ever with a global haul approaching $94M. Other A24 films include horror flicks Hereditary and Midsommar.

We gave Everything Everywhere All At Once a glowing 10/10 review and said the film “encompasses a variety of subjects, but it does justice to each of them with a carefully written script, marvelous performances, and a healthy dose of bizarre humor to counter its bleak story.”

If you’re wanting a taste of what’s to come for the rerelease, last month, we got a look at some of the bloopers from the hit art house film. The film, already a completely bonkers and wild ride, features some incredible action and a number of memorable props - including an animatronic raccoon.

Mortal Kombat Film Sequel Will Reportedly Bring Back Original Director

Mortal Kombat is coming back with a new film sequel, and Simon McQuoid is reportedly slated to direct once again.

According to a report from Deadline, the recent Mortal Kombat reboot will be dusted off and sent back into the arena after a surprisingly successful box office run. A previous report suggested the sequel will be written by Moon Knight head writer Jeremy Slater.

Released last year, Mortal Kombat was McQuoid’s directorial debut and managed to dominate the box office when it was released in theaters and on HBO Max back in April 2021.

Surprisingly, the film debuted at #1 at the box office and is still one of HBO’s most-watched movies.

Mortal Kombat tells the story of Cole Young – a washed-up MMA fighter who is completely unaware of his lineage… and has no idea why he’s being hunted by the assassin known only as Sub-Zero. It’s a new take on a franchise that has seen numerous movies, and to be honest, it’s pretty good.

IGN’s own review called it “an origin story and an Avengers-esque superhero team-up all in one. As a result, the first half stalls out a bit as it backs up a dump truck of exposition, and even then some characters that really deserve more time in the spotlight end up being shallow and forgettable. Still, it finds its footing in the second half and delivers a gleefully cheesy and entertaining take on one of gaming’s most historic franchises and a solid starting point for future films.”

Whether or not any of the original film’s stars will return for Mortal Kombat 2 remains to be seen. But Mehcad Brooks as Jaxx was an inspired bit of casting. Let’s just hope we get an interesting roster for the upcoming sequel.

Mortal Kombat stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young alongside Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Max Huang, Tadanobu Asano, Chin Han, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada.

Simon McQuoid directed the film based on a script by Greg Russo and Dava Callaham.

Michael Mann’s Heat 2 ‘Already Underway’

Michael Mann’s new book Heat 2 is already being turned into a film.

During an interview with Marc Maron on the WTF Podcast (via Playlist) the 79-year-old filmmaker revealed that his upcoming Heat sequel is already underway.

“Yes,” he said when asked whether the film was in the works. “I can’t talk about it, but yes.”

“This is a book, but it’s also going to be a very large movie,” he explained.

Heat 2 has been in the works for some time and will be heading our way in book form this August.

Although described as a sequel, Heat 2 is actually more of a prequel, telling the story of Detective Vincent Hanna (who is played by Al Pacino in the original film) as well as Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro), Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer), and Nate (Jon Voight) long before the events of the first film.

Mann certainly hasn’t been shy about this passion project, previously explaining that he wanted to turn the book into a film. But what does it mean that this process is underway? It’s likely that Mann is currently working on the script. After all, there’s been no official announcement about the project and it’s likely still in the very early stages.

Still, fans of the original film will likely be ecstatic… Even if Robert DeNiro and Val Kilmer won’t be back.

“I love those guys,” he said. “But they’d have to be six years younger than they were in Heat.”

As for who will join the cast, it’s very early days. But it looks as though Mann will be on the lookout for younger versions of Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Val Kilmer, and Jon Voight. A tall order, for sure.

Let’s just hope he doesn’t resort to digitally de-aging anyone. We already know how that went down with DeNiro…

Meanwhile, Mann will next be seen bringing Ferrari to the big screen, with Hugh Jackman joining the upcoming biopic as Enzo Ferrari following Christian Bale’s earlier exit.
