Deathloop Has Been Officially Confirmed by Arkane to be Part of the Dishonored Universe

Arkane Studios has officially confirmed that Deathloop takes place in the future of the universe first built in the Dishonored games.

This confirmation comes by the way of Deathloop director and Arkane Lyon studio director Dinga Bakaba, who appeared on The Official Xbox Podcast alongside Arkane Austin studio director Harvey Smith.

Xbox's Jeff Rubenstein asked Bakaba about the rumors and hints that Deathloop is connected to this larger universe. While Rubenstein said he didn't have to confirm anything, Bakaba went above and beyond and not only confirmed that this was true, but he also discussed the thought process behind making it so.

"Not everyone has seen the same thing," Bakaba said of Deathloop. "Not everyone has heard the same song that you might have heard hidden somewhere. Not everyone has seen every room, et cetera, et cetera. So, it was nice to see the community peek at the little clues we did sprinkle everywhere that, yes, indeed, we envisioned Deathloop to be happening in the future after [Dishonored 2's standalone expansion] Death of the Outsider."

Bakaba said the team didn't want to make this connection too obvious and front-facing as it wanted Deathloop to have a story and identity that stood on its own, but that didn't mean it couldn't use the game to explore what would happen after the events of Death of the Outsider.

"As we were making Deathloop, we said, hey, [this story] could be one of the things that could happen after [Death of the Outsider.] So, we have a certain timeline to link that and there are a lot of clues, actually, in the game," Bakaba said. "There are some that are abused, one of them is really spoiler-y, so voila, but there are a lot of small things and some that were under people’s noses all the time, but people are just figuring it out."

One of these references can be seen on the shotgun known as the Heritage Rifle. This weapon has a logo on the side of it that couldn't be seen clearly until the recent Goldenloop update added "idle breaks where the character plays with his gun." Now, the logo can be identified as Dishonored's Dunwall Tower.

As Bakaba put it, these threads are like "this little scavenger hunt inside the scavenger hunt" that is Deathloop, and they are just waiting to be discovered if players look hard enough.

"We tried to see everything as an evolution, but each time they mentioned the past, either we were vague enough or we disguised in, I would say, natural ways the names," Bakaba said. "Like, they talk about the Motherland, and not about Tyvia, but you can definitely… once you know, you can unravel everything. And yes, it does make sense. So, it was nice for us to be imagining one of the futures of the Dishonored world and to have that make sense."

Even without knowing all of these references to a larger universe, we still awarded Deathloop a rare 10/10. In our Deathloop review, we said, "Its unique, high-concept ideas around time loops and non-linear investigation work are implemented with elegance, making its systems feel effortless to navigate, learn from, and ultimately master. A new high watermark for Arkane and developers of similar games to aspire to, Deathloop is a game like no other."

Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match Will Arrive in 2023 With Joel McHale Returning As Johnny Cage

Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match has officially been announced for 2023 and it will see Joel McHale returning as the voice of Johnny Cage.

The news was announced during the New York Comic Con panel for Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind, and arrived the same day that Mortal Kombat is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Series producer Rick Morales was on hand to confirm that Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match will be the fourth entry in the animated film series.

No further details were given for this new Legends film, but it obviously looks to put a big focus on McHale's Johnny Cage as his name is in the title.

McHale first voiced Johnny Cage in 2020's Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge and returned for another round in 2021's Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms. He was absent from Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind, but will once again lend his voice to the character in this new film.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind was released today, October 8, and follows Kano on a "brutal journey to take over Earthrealm." To do so, however, he will have to face off against Kenshi and Kuai Liang.

In our Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind review, we said it is "an interesting effort to illustrate more of Kenshi’s past, but it muddies its own plot. It's a color-by-numbers apocalyptic thriller with a shiny new Mortal Kombat paint job. Some of Kenshi's story beats are satisfying, and it's refreshing to see a character that doesn't get much screen time shine for a bit."

The Walking Dead: Dead City, the Spin-Off Starring Maggie and Negan, Gets First-Look Images at NYCC 2022

The Walking Dead: Dead City, the upcoming spin-off series starring Lauren Cohan's Maggie and Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Negan, recieved its first-look images at The Walking Dead panel at New York Comic Con 2022.

While we didn't learn much more about the series that's set in New York City, the images show a bit of conflict between Maggie and Negan, some stylish shots of them in city streets, and more.

The Walking Dead: Dead City was originally announced as The Walking Dead: Isle of the Dead, but it has officially taken on a new name. The series focuses on a Big Apple that was "long ago cut off from the mainland" and one that is filled with both the living and the dead.

This panel was also the final NYCC panel for the original The Walking Dead series as its final episode will air on November 20, 2022. At the panel, fans were treated to a look at the opening minutes from this week's new episode and new photography from October 16's episode.

Norman Reedus was at the panel and spoke a bit about the spin-off that was meant to star his character, Daryl, and Melissa McBride's Carol. He addressed the rumors as to why she dropped out of the spin-off show, saying "there's been a lot of talk. Chill. It's gonna be fine."

He also spoke a bit about the series, teasing what fans can expect.

"It’s in France. It’s epic in scale. I mean it’s ducking epic. I’ve been on locations scouted … it’s crazy what we’re gonna do there," Reedus said. "I think France is going to have a ducking heart attack. It has a different look to it, a different sound to it.” It’s gonna fun. There’s gonna be a lot of familiar faces. Don’t yell at me.”

Star Trek Universe NYCC 2022 Panel Reveals Teasers for Picard, Discovery, and Prodigy

New York Comic Con 2022's Star Trek Universe panel gave fans of Star Trek: Picard, Discovery, and Prodigy a glimpse of the future in the form of teasers, images, casting details, and more.

From a teaser and the reveal of Amanda Plummer as Picard's new villain Vadic to a new look at Season 5 of Discovery and the mid-season return of Prodigy, there were a lot of exciting reveals and we're here to break down each one for you.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Teaser Reveals New Villain and the Return of Professor James Moriarty and Data's Brother Lore

Star Trek: Picard's third and final season is set to premiere on February 16, 2023, and NYCC's Star Trek Universe panel gave fans a teaser filled with details on the upcoming story. First off, Tony Award-winner Amanda Plummer was shown off as the villainous Vadic, a "mysterious alien captain of the Shrike, a warship that has set its sights on Jean-Luc Picard and his old crewmates from his days on the Enterprise."

Geordi La Forge's daughters will also be joining their father, Picard, and the rest of the Next Generation crew on this final mission as Critical Role's Mica Burton and Cruel Summer's Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut will take on the roles of Ensign Alandra La Forge and Ensign Sidney La Forge, respectively.

Lastly, Next Generation fans will be happy to know that Brent Spiner will once again be playing Data's brother Lore and Daniel Davis will once more play Professor James Moriarty in this final season.

During the panel, Jonathan Frakes revealed that his character, William Riker, is set to have a conflict of some kind with Picard and the series' showrunner Terry Matalas said this final season will very much draw inspiration from the film Crimson Tide.

Patrick Stewart also made a plea to Paramount when he was asked if this would be the final time we'd see this beloved crew together, saying, "To the Paramount people in the room... We could still make a movie!"

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Trailer Teases New Cast Members and New Dangers for Captain Burnham and Her Crew

Star Trek: Discovery's fifth season will debut sometime in 2023 and Star Trek Universe revealed a bit more about what fans can expect in the form of a teaser and the reveal of some brand-new characters.

The Umbrella Academy and Jessica Jones' Callum Keith Rennie is joining the cast as a series regular as Rayner, a "gruff, smart Starfleet Captain who holds a clear line between commander and crew - he leads, they follow." He cares about the mission above all else and doesn't care about others' feelings he may hurt along the way. He will "get the job done and apologize later." He succeeds during times of conflict and struggles during times of peace, and this mission will be a new test for him.

The 100 and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Eve Harlow will play Moll, a "former courier turned outlaw, who is highly intelligent and dangerous, with an impressive strategic mind and a sharp wit." She loves nothing more than going into every situation with every angle planned out and won't let anyone or anything get in her way.

Lastly, Shadowhunters and Blood of Zeus' Elias Toufexis will take on the role of L'ak, a "former courier turned outlaw, who is tough, impulsive, and fiercely protective of his beloved partner, Moll." L'ak places Moll's safety above all else, and this will undoubtedly put him in conflict with Burnham and her crew.

In Season 5 of Star Trek: Discovery, "Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncover a mystery that sends them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well... dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it."

Star Trek: Prodigy's Mid-Season Trailer Revealed Alongside the Return of a Star Trek: The Next Generation's Admiral Edward Jellico

Star Trek: Prodigy's first season will officially return on Thursday, October 27, and Star Trek Universe presented fans with a trailer that shows what's in store for the crew of the U.S.S. Protostar in these final episodes.

As we race towards the Season 1 finale and the crew make their way toward Starfleet, "their dreams are threatened when they discover the U.S.S. Protostar harbors a weapon designed to tear the United Federation of Planets apart. To make matters worse, the U.S.S. Dauntless is on a manhunt for the Protostar as the real Vice Admiral Janeway is eager to uncover what happened to her missing former First Officer Chakotay. With these two ships on a collision course and destruction on the horizon, the fate of the Alpha Quadrant hands in the balance."

It was also confirmed that Ronny Cox will reprise his The Next Generation role of Captain Edward Jellico, but now he is serving as Admiral. He will be joining the cast in a recurring role.

DC Universe Infinite Adds ‘Ultra’ Subscription Tier With 5000 More Comics | NYCC 2022

The DC Universe Infinite digital comics service is getting a big upgrade in the form of a new subscription tier, one which unlocks 5,000 more comics and the ability to read new releases one month after their publication date.

DCUI is adding a premium "Ultra" tier on top of the standard monthly and annual subscriptions. Ultra is available as an annual subscription only. DC will be rolling out this new subscription beginning Monday, October 10, with an introductory price of $99 per year (compared to the standard annual subscription price of $74.99). That price will go up after the promotional period ends on November 28, but subscribers will be locked into the $99 price for as long as their subscriptions remain active.

So what do you get for your extra $25? As mentioned, Ultra subscribers will be able to read new releases significantly earlier than with other plans. Typically, DCUI adds new comics six months after their original publication. Marvel Unlimited, meanwhile, adds new comics three months after release.

Beginning in mid-November, Ultra subscribers will also gain access to 5,000 exclusive comics on top of the roughly 25,000 books already on the service. These extra comics are mostly from DC's mature readers Vertigo and Black Label imprints, as well as various collected editions. That lineup includes perennial bestsellers like 100 Bullets and American Vampire, finally filling what up till now had been the biggest hole in the service's vast library.

Similar to Marvel Unlimited's annual subscription perks, Ultra subscribers will also receive a free print comic when they sign up, renew or upgrade their membership. The first comic being offered is a softcover version of The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition, featuring a new, exclusive cover by Blackest Night artist Ivan Reis.

“We’re excited to introduce the industry leading one-month windowing of digital comics with DC UNIVERSE INFINITE’s Ultra tier,” said DC Senior Vice President and General Manager Anne DePies in a press release. “This new offering is part of DC’s vision of being everywhere our fans are – online and at comic shops. With a shorter digital release window, fans can enjoy our fantastic new stories, anywhere, anytime-while continuing to find the latest issues at comic shops.”

DC is also making one addition to the service that will be available to all subscription types. YA graphic novels like Teen Titans: Beast Boy Loves Raven and Nubia: Real One, as well as 100 classic issues of MAD Magazine, are live now on the app.

You can learn more about DC Universe Infinite's new Ultra tier by visiting the official website.

DC Comics Reveals New Direction for Superman Line in 2023 | NYCC 2022

2023 marks the 85th anniversary of Superman's debut, and DC is celebrating that milestone with a major revamp of the Superman comic book line. That includes the launch of a new monthly Superman series from Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths writer Joshua Williamson and Far Sector artist Jamal Campbell in February.

As revealed during DC's Superman panel at NYCC, the new status quo builds on recent storylines like Dark Crisis and "Kal-El Returns." Kal-El has returned to Earth from his long ordeal on Warworld and is ready to reconnect with his family and resume his old life as Superman. But just because Lex Luthor is in prison doesn't mean there won't be new enemies and new challenges for both Supermen to confront.

Kal-El will be the main character of Williamson and Campbell's Superman series as well as Action Comics. The latter series will retain its classic numbering but switch to a new, larger format beginning with January's Action Comics #1051. Current writer Philip Kennedy Johnson will continue to write the lead story.

Dan Jurgens and Lee Weeks, who first introduced Lois and Clark's son Jon in 2015's Convergence, will reunite for a backup story called Lois and Clark 2: Doom Rising. That story will take place when Jon was still a child and his parents were living anonymously on their farm, prior to the events of 2017's Superman Reborn.

Finally, writer Leah Williams and artist Marguerite Sauvage will reintroduce Power Girl to the DCU in a three-part backup story that spins out of the Lazarus Planet crossover.

Fortunately, just because Kal-El is back doesn't mean Jon won't have a book of his own anymore. Superman: Son of Kal-El writer Tom Taylor and artist Clayton Henry are continuing their story in a new limited series called Adventures of Superman. The boo kwill pit Jon against his kidnapper, Ultraman, and also feature Earth-2's Superman, Val-Zod.

“I couldn't be more excited for Jon Kent to headline the iconic Adventures of Superman,” said Taylor in DC's press release. “It’s a real testament to the fantastic response of fans to Jon as Superman. This series is going to be one of the most action-packed books I’ve ever written and Jon is going to be tested more than ever before. While we can tell you the Superman of Earth-2, Val-Zod, and Jon’s nemesis, Ultraman, will be key characters in the early part of Adventures of Superman, what we’re going to reveal at the end of issue #2 will have everyone talking and issue #3 launches us in a direction that no one will see coming.”

“After the darkness of the last year in the DCU, there is no character better suited to lead DC into the light than Superman,” said Williamson. “It’s an understatement to say I’m honored to be writing DC’s flagship series. I’m very excited to take Clark Kent on a fun, pulp style adventure in Metropolis against his greatest villains. We’re also going to be introducing new concepts and new challenges for the Man of Steel and to be doing it with wonderful partners like Jamal Campbell and Nick Dragotta is a dream come true. Every page explodes with awesome energy. The Superman line that Tom, Phillip and I are putting together with DC is going to lead the way for an exciting 2023.”
