New Product Label Should Make It Much Easier to Buy Good Monitors With VRR
If you are looking for a monitor that supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) announced today that it is making it easier to figure out which models you should consider.
VESA's Adaptive-Sync Display Compliance Test Specification (also known as Adaptive-Sync Display CTS) is a new certification program that puts VRR displays through a series of tests to examine the raw performance of a monitor's VRR technology, looking for things such as judder, dropped frames, and flicker.
As a refresher, Variable Refresh Rate is a technology that syncs the display's refresh rate to the game's output, allowing games to run at a lower or higher FPS than the display and alleviating issues such as screen tearing.
This would not be the first time VESA stepped in to make a certification program. Back in 2017, VESA announced an HDR certification program that focused on things like peak brightness on HDR-capable displays.
VESA is transparent about the testing it will put monitors through, going as far as making criteria and the official document of the test specifications public. In addition to a new AdaptiveSync program, VESA also announced a new MediaSync program; the big difference between them is that AdaptiveSync focuses more on displays optimized for gaming, while MediaSync focuses on monitors designed for content creation or video playback.
Similar to monitors that go through testing for things like G-Sync and FreeSync, if a monitor passes either the MediaSync or AdaptiveSync tests, VESA will award the monitor with a sticker, as seen in the image below.
The list of AdaptiveSync certified products is currently small, with only nine displays, such as the LG UltraGear GP950 27-inch 4K gaming monitor. It’s more than likely that monitors from other display manufacturers will be on the list down the road.

Star Wars Returns to Fortnite: Lightsabers and More Available for 2 Weeks
Fortnite is returning to the galaxy far, far away for its now-yearly Star Wars event.
Kicking off the May the 4th Star Wars Day celebrations, Fortnite will be adding usable lightsabers into the game, with previously available Star Wars items unvaulted from May 3 until May 17, 2022.
Additionally, you can buy any non-Battle Pass Star Wars outfit as they return to the shop.
Also returning to the island is the iconic E-11 blaster used by Stormtroopers throughout the original Star Wars trilogy. To get your hands on the blaster, look out for Stormtroopers who have set up checkpoints across the island in search of Obi-Wan. They’re also appearing randomly in chests, too.
There’s also some new Stormtrooper training in the form of some new Star Wars Quests. Active until May 17 at 12am ET, you’ll confiscate a “landspeeder”, try out some Jedi contraband (a lightsaber), and more. Each quest awards a bunch of XP and completing 5 of these will give you the new Empire Banner.
This year’s lightsabers include:
- Luke Skywalker (Green)
- Kylo Ren (Red)
- Mace Windu (Purple)
- Obi-Wan (Blue)
If you’re a Star Wars fan who missed all the cool outfits in previous years – don’t fret. All non-Battle Pass Star Wars outfits are heading back to the shop. That includes:
- Imperial Stormtrooper
- Kylo Ren
- Zorii Bliss
- Finn
- Rey
- Sith Trooper
- Boba Fett
- Fennec Shand
- Krrsantan
That’s right – there’s a selection of cool Star Wars outfits from throughout Star Wars history – including the recent sequel trilogy and even The Book of Boba Fett.
Unfortunately, you won’t be able to get your hands on The Mandalorian’s sweet beskar armor… however, if you managed to get hold of it during the Chapter 2: Season 5 Battle Pass, now would be a great time to show it off.

Newly-Discovered Fossils Reveal How Ancient Dogs Differed From Today’s Faithful Companions
Palaeontologists have unearthed the fossilized skeletal remains of a long-extinct dog species, providing new information about the evolution of the mammal.
The San Diego Union-Tribute reports that the rare fossil ended up at the San Diego Natural History Museum after being spotted protruding out of an excavated chunk of rock during a construction project in the southern region of San Diego in 2019. Palaeontologists at the museum later picked up their tools and brushes to uncover the fossil embedded within.
Once the paleo team brought the fossilized cheekbones and teeth to the surface, they were able to identify the canine. They discovered that the fossil belonged to a group of animals called Archeocyons, aka "ancient dog," that would have roamed the area we now know as San Diego between 24 million and 28 million years ago during the late Oligocene epoch.
"It's like you've found a tree branch, but you need more branches to figure out what kind of tree it is," said curatorial assistant Amanda Linn, who is said to have spent nearly 120 hours chipping away at the rock to unearth the ancient dog fossil. "As soon as you uncover the bones, they start to disintegrate... I used a lot of patience, and a lot of glue."
Linn said the "picture got clearer" every time they uncovered a new bone, and fortunately for science, they uncovered a lot of bones in the process. The fossil was very much intact, with the skull, teeth, spine, legs, ankles, and toes all emerging from the rock to give the team a better view and fresh insight into how ancient dogs differed from today's faithful companions.
Post-doctoral researcher Ashley Poust, who worked on the project alongside Linn and the museum's curator of palaeontology Tom Deméré, said the Archeocyon was comparable in size to that of today's gray fox. To further support that, Poust highlighted a foxlike creature in William Stout's mural (pictured above) for its resemblance to the ancient dog species.
It's also understood that the Archeocyon "walked on its toes" and had "nonretractable claws," which could have been used to climb up trees where it's possible they may have taken up residence. They are also said to have had long legs to be able to chase their prey across long distances, paired with a strong, muscular tail that they likely used for balance.
More details about the species will no doubt come to light following further examination of the fossilized remains. "Nothing makes a curator happier than having visiting researchers to the collection," Deméré said, extending an invite to his academic peers. "A nearly complete skeleton like this can answer all sorts of questions, depending on who's interested."
Palaeontologists find and study fossils all over the world, in almost every environment. In fact, just recently, it was reported that the fossils of giant whale-like creatures called Ichthyosaurs had been found in the Swiss Alps, while the gallery above displays images of a specially preserved "dueling dinosaurs" specimen that originated from the wild terrains of Montana.

Elden Ring Modders are Already Adding Star Wars, One Piece, Hollow Knight and More
Elden Ring modders are currently adding a ton of pop culture franchises into the game, including clever (and bizarre) mods to add elements from Star Wars, One Piece, Hollow Knight, and even Life Is Strange.
The mods range from adding simple costumes – Zelda's Dark Link for example – that let players cosplay their favourite characters, to weapons that allow you wield spells using Harry Potter's Elder Wand.
The Nexus Mods community has been hard at work bringing just about every franchise imaginable to Elden Ring, and as it was released only two months ago, there are sure to be plenty more on the way. Here are some of our favorites so far:
Star Wars Elden Ring Mods
Arriving from a galaxy far, far away, this Star Wars mod adds Darth Vader to Elden Ring complete with a flowing cape and flashing lights atop his life support unit.
No Star Wars character would be complete without a lightsaber, of course and, since all the rules have been broken already, why not equip Vader with Darth Maul's double-bladed lightsaber, available in five different colours.
One Piece Elden Ring Mods
The anime world has also arrived in Elden Ring through these One Piece mods. While Luffy's extendable arms may be a stretch too far (for now), right-hand man Zoro has made an appearance.
While the third sword in Zoro's mouth is purely cosmetic, his other two katanas are modded versions of Uchigatana and Rivers of Blood.
Only one other One Piece character appears to have been modded into Elden Ring so far, with another swordsman, Mihawk, also being added.
Hollow Knight Elden Ring Mods
One of the most bizarre but equally brilliant mods so far is the protagonist from Hollow Knight, with The Knight being turned from a 2D model into a fully-formed Elden Ring character. It works surprisingly well.
The Knight retains the overall creepiness of Hollow Knight, which actually transfers quite smoothly into the often eerie Lands Between, and even comes equipped with his nail sword from the game.
Zelda Elden Ring Mods
As Elden Ring's very impressive launch has guaranteed its spot in gaming history, it only makes sense that some other gaming royalty would arrive in the game too.
The Legend of Zelda's Link has been modded into Elden Ring, allowing players to traverse the Lands Between as the Hero of Time himself.
This Link in particular is the Twilight Princess version, and players can even choose to equip the Dark Link skin instead of the normal version. To complete the ensemble, the Master Sword and Hylian Shield have also been modded in.
Final Fantasy Elden Ring Mods
Characters from Final Fantasy VII: Remake have also been added to Elden Ring, and the game's party system can even be emulated through some clever manipulation of mechanics.
Players can choose to play as a Fusion Sword-wielding Cloud Strife, or equip some fist-fighting weapons while playing as Tifa Lockhart. Regardless of which you choose, the other character can tag along as a spirit summon.
God of War Elden Ring Mods
Fans have already managed to create a fairly authentic Kratos using Elden Ring's robust character creation system, but the roleplaying can be completed thanks to new weapon mods.
The Leviathan Axe from God of War (2018) has been added, complete with glowing runes, alongside the Blade of Chaos and the Nemean Cestus from God of War III.
Resident Evil Elden Ring Mods
Ready to take on the Elden Ring zombie problem, Resident Evil's Claire Redfield and Jill Valentine have both been modded into the game.
For another splash of the franchise, players can also equip Lady Dimitrescu's knife, the Dagger of Death's Flower, from Resident Evil 8, which replaces the default dagger available in Elden Ring.
Smaller Mods from Life is Strange, Harry Potter, and More
There are almost too many Elden Ring mods to include in one list but some smaller ones still deserve recognition. A Life is Strange mod that adds protagonist Max Caulfield is, well, strange, but respects the details as it comes with several different outfits from the game, including a removable satchel.
A Harry Potter mod adds the Elder Wand into Elden Ring, and it actually works as a wand in the game, with players able to fire spells from the modified Glintstone Staff.
Finally, some completely out of place but impressive mods nevertheless include Excalibur from Warframe and Doomslayer from Doom. You can bet we'll get many more additions in the months and years to come.
As evidenced by this selection of mods, Elden Ring has proved somewhat of a cultural phenomenon with players finding other completely wacky ways to interact with the game. One player got the Fisher Price toy controller working with the game, while another has made a VR version of Elden Ring.
Someone has beaten a boss using the Nintendo Switch Ring Fit controller, while others completed the game without taking damage or dealing damage.
In our 10/10 review, IGN said: "Elden Ring is a massive iteration on what FromSoftware began with the Souls series, bringing its relentlessly challenging combat to an incredible open world that gives us the freedom to choose our own path."

Best Game Pass Deal Right Now: 2-Years of Game Pass Ultimate for $135 (Save $224)
First up, your Game Pass subscription must not currently be active - I repeat, you must not have an active Game Pass for this to work. Once you're confident, proceed to the next step.
Next, you need to invest in up to 3-years worth of Xbox Live Gold. You can easily buy 12-month Xbox Live Gold codes from Amazon or other retailers, costing $60/£50 depending on your region.
I Recommend Stacking 2-Years of Xbox Live Gold
The maximum amount of stacking for Gold subscriptions is 36-months (costing $180), any more than that will be lost. So, to keep things safe for those who currently have a Gold membership, I recommend sticking to just 2-years' worth (costing $120/£100).
Now, here's the fun part. Once you've redeemed these codes and stacked your Xbox Live Gold membership up to your liking, you can then convert this time to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate at a 1:1 ratio.
Head to the Xbox Live Gold upgrade page and proceed to convert the time you've paid for directly into Game Pass Ultimate. If you've never used the upgrade feature before, this will cost $1/£1 (total cost coming to $121/£101). If you have used this before, it will instead cost you $14.99/£10.99 to upgrade.
Overall, at most, you'll be paying only $135 for 2-years of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (instead of $359). If you manage to pull off a 3-year conversion, at most you'll be paying $195 instead (instead of $539). Now that's a big discount. Once you're done, just make sure you turn off auto renewal as well.

Benedict Cumberbatch ‘Taking a Bit of a Break’ from Acting After Doctor Strange 2
Benedict Cumberbatch is seemingly taking a break from acting after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
During an interview with IGN at the premiere for his new movie, the 45-year-old Doctor Strange star explained how busy he was between acting, parenthood and more by saying, “It gets very multiversal in real life as well,” he said.
Asked what variant of himself he would like to be, he replied: “I guess one that’s less busy, maybe… I might be that variant very soon, which is nice – taking a bit of a break.”
After appearing as a supporting character in a number of MCU projects, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sees the Marvel hero encounter completely new versions of himself – some of which we’ve already seen in the recent trailers. But now it looks as though the good Doctor will be taking a sabbatical.
So, when will Doctor Strange return? Presumably not for a while. Thor: Love and Thunder is Marvel’s next big release, followed by Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The Marvels, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will follow quickly behind. These aren't necessarily films that are crying out for a Sorcerer Supreme.
And with the future of The Avengers in doubt, it looks as though it could be a few years before our next Marvel team-up. All of that said, MCU boss Kevin Feige has called Strange the "anchor" of his cinematic universe, and recently revealed that his team were about to plan the next 10 years of movies – you can expect Strange to have a big presence in there, even if it's a few years away.
Outside of the MCU, Cumberbatch has recently been nominated for an Oscar (for Power of the Dog), given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and already said he won't be returning to stage acting anytime soon. Cumberbatch didn't say when that break would start, or how long it might last, but he's earned a rest.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, alongside Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch. They’re joined by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, and Xochitl Gomez.
Sam Raimi directed the movie from a script by Michael Waldron, based on characters created by comic book legends, Steve Ditko, and Stan Lee.

FIFA to Finally Start Testing Cross-Platform Play
Cross-platform play is finally arriving in FIFA 22 "in the near future" for players on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Google Stadia – but it'll just be a test for now.
The feature, which allows players to play together online regardless of platform, will only be introduced in a testing stage, however, and will only available for Online Seasons and Online Friendlies. EA hasn't said when the test will begin, or how long it might last for.
It's unclear if other cross-play modes or platforms will be added, as EA said in a blog post that feedback from the test "will help inform how cross-play could be further implemented in future titles", not saying anything about adding more to FIFA 22.
It also limited the feature to current-gen hardware and these two modes "with the aim of reducing the chance for introducing new issues into the game."
A cross-play menu will appear in FIFA 22 when testing begins, which allows players to add friends on other platforms and even turn the feature off altogether.
Cross-play won't affect the actual gameplay or matchmaking, EA said, as all it really means is that the pool of potential opponents will just be bigger than it was previously.
FIFA is one of the biggest gaming franchises in the world, and its continuing lack of cross-play (while rivals like Fortnite and Call of Duty wholeheartedly adopt it) has been a huge source of frustration for fans. This is a step towards remedying that issue.
FIFA 22 headlines this month's PlayStation Plus games just in time for its Team of the Season players arriving in Ultimate Team.
In our 7/10 review, IGN said: "Microtransactions still loom large, but small iterative changes and the horsepower of new-gen consoles combine to make FIFA 22 feel like a worthwhile upgrade without needing anything revolutionary or terribly exciting from EA’s side."

Benedict Cumberbatch Offers a Lengthy Defense For Doctor Strange’s Spider-Man: No Way Home Spell
Benedict Cumberbatch still thinks Doctor Strange did the right thing in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the 45-year-old Doctor Strange star once again defended his character's actions when it comes to that severely broken spell...
“He’s a human being, and I think it was a very human error,” he explained. “He saw Peter as a fellow foot soldier and then as a teenager going through a very formative experience of not being able to be his true self because of being exposed, and having lost a mentor, [Strange] decided to step in with a gesture of pretty good intention.”
Although Strange clearly had good intentions, he’s come under fire from fans who think his actions were remarkably blasé for a spell that could shatter reality itself. But Cumberbatch insists it wasn’t all Doctor Strange’s fault.
“I think the spell, on its own, might have been all right,” he said. “Everyone forgets that Peter interrupts the spell so many times, and that’s what corrupted it. That’s what lets it in. Peter, through the ability he has with his powers, affects the spell with his words. It’s not really Strange’s mistake.”
The big question is really, should Doctor Strange have cast the spell in the first place? Cumberbatch has an answer for that, too.
“He’s right to want to help Peter. What kind of superhero would he be if he didn’t want to help another superhero? That’s kind of questionable. That avuncular love, that genuine love, which, by the end, is another cause for a near mistake, but he rights the correction there in accepting Peter’s idea of channeling the forgetfulness into the identification of him as Peter Parker so that everyone forgets who Peter Parker is. And it’s costly to [Strange] because he cares for the guy.
"He says, 'We. Everyone who loves you. We [would have no memory of you],' and in the use of that pronoun, which was my idea to put in, he allies himself with MJ [Zendaya] and everyone in that universe who loves Peter.”
“I think somebody who cares about somebody can be forgiven for doing something that has consequences,” he added. “But in that moment, it takes a teenager to adjust him to doing the thing for the greater good rather than the selfish thing, which would be to not do that spell so he can carry on a friendship with the guy that he cares about.”
Ironically, Cumberbatch says it’s all about his humanity – interesting for a superhero who’s often considered a bit aloof. That said, he has already stated that this infamous spell wasn’t all arrogance.
“I empathize very much with the idea that a superhero can make a mistake because of their humanity,” he said. “I’m glad that I’m playing one that does.”

Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 Plot Detail Seemingly Leaked By Voice Actor
A possibly major plot detail for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 has seemingly leaked from Daruk's Italian voice actor Pietro Ubaldi.
This article contains Breath of the Wild and possible Breath of the Wild 2 spoilers going forward.
As spotted by ResetEra user Alexander_Wand, Zelda-focused YouTube channel Lega Hyrule shared an interview with Ubaldi, who said he not only voiced Daruk in the sequel but also the Goron character's ancestor.
Daruk himself passes into the afterlife at the end of Breath of the Wild, meaning his appearance is a little odd in itself, but the apparent ancestor character is also a complete mystery.
Time is at the centre of Breath of the Wild's story - with Link waking up 100 years after Ganondorf ruined everything during the Great Calamity - and several flashbacks occur throughout the game.
This ancestor could indicates that Link will once again have to address the past, with some fans theorising that they're from the "ancient times" mentioned in the game, which took place 10,000 years prior. Daruk's ancestor could be an original Divine Beast pilot, for example.
Even more interesting, trailers for Breath of the Wild's (still officially untitled) sequel have shown what looks to be a longer haired, seemingly injured version of Link. Some now believe that that version of Link himself is from the ancient times – which could explain his toga-like clothing, too.
As Zelda games love to play with time in general - and Link himself is known as the Hero of Time - it's unsurprising that Breath of the Wild 2 would explore this theme further. How exactly it does so though, only time will tell (pardon the pun).
Nintendo has been fairly quiet about the sequel since it was revealed at E3 last year and is even yet to unveil its full subtitle as this will give away too much.
While it was originally expected to be released in 2022, Breath of the Wild 2 was pushed back to 2023 as of March, meaning fans will have to wait even longer before they discover the full meaning behind the ancestor leak.
They'll continue to wildly theorise in the meantime though, but there are at least some things we know about Breath of the Wild 2 for definite, including the inclusion of new gear, weapons, and more.

Meta Will Reportedly Release 2 New Quest VR Headsets by 2024
Facebook's parent company Meta is reportedly planning to release four new VR headsets by 2024 – including two new Meta Quest )formerly Oculus Quest) gaming headsets.
According to a report from The Information, Meta's internal roadmap has four VR headsets scheduled to release in the next three years. The two Meta Quest headsets will be for gaming, of course, while the latter two – including Project Cambria, which was revealed by CEO Mark Zuckerberg last week – will be for work purposes.
A high-end gaming headset, seemingly the successor to the Quest 2, is reportedly scheduled for release in 2023 while a budget model will release the following year.
Project Cambria, however, appears to be the furthest along in development and was actually supposed to be released last year but suffered delays as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. An updated version of Cambria, codenamed Project Funston, is expected to be released in 2024.
Cambria will be Meta's first work-focused VR headset, ehich has outward facing cameras allowing for full colour passthrough, essentially meaning users can see through the headset in real time, allowing for augmented reality as well as virtual.
Cambria will apparnetly have a high-resolution screen that allows it to be used for longer without experiencing fatigue, and while it's expected to be on the heavy side due to the larger battery pack, it's designed to be comfortable over long periods.
This complements Zuckerberg's comments last week, in which he said that the device can eventually replace an entire work setup. Employees have reportedly referred to Cambria as a "laptop for the face".
The headsets will be Meta's first foray into the metaverse, as Cambria will also include features to seemingly simulate the user's position within a virtual world. Zuckerberg said in the reveal last week: "We're also building in eye tracking and face tracking so that your avatar can make eye contact and facial expressions, which dramatically improves your sense of presence."
Though Cambria was revealed without mention of the gaming headsets, the recent Meta Quest Gaming Showcase made clear the company was still pursuing a more traditional gaming route.
Ghostbusters VR and Resident Evil 4 - The Mercenaries VR were both announced for the platform alongside new virtual reality games based on Among Us, The Walking Dead, and the NFL.
It's not all about the digital space though, as Meta's first retail store, set in the real world (specifically in Burlingame, California) will open next month.
