Nintendo Switch’s Latest Update Appears to Improve N64 Emulation and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
While many were excited about the arrival of N64 games on the Switch via the new Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service, it was quickly discovered that the performance of these classic games left much to be desired. Fortunately, it appears Nintendo has quietly improved the N64 emulation and, in turn, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in the Switch's latest update that arrived with Banjo-Kazooie.
As reported by VGC and noticed by those like @OatmealDome, Ocarina of Time on Nintendo Switch Online suffered from not only input lag and audio delay, but also graphical issues that caused certain scenes - like the Water Temple's Dark Link fight - to look worse than previous versions of the game.
In the Switch version, the room where you face Dark Link lacked the reflections in the water and the ambient fog that created a very specific mood in the room. The latest update hasn't fixed the fog, but the reflections in the water have been adjusted to look better and input lag seems to have been reduced. What's perhaps most interesting is this update does not seem to have made any changes to the games themselves, but rather to the Switch's N64 emulator. According to dataminer LuigiBlood, "Whatever fix they did for Zelda Ocarina of Time it was not added as a hack, seems to be an actual emulator fix."
In a statement to Kotaku, @LuigiBlood shared a bit behind why these issues may be occuring.
"[The NSO N64 emulator] is based on the Wii U Virtual Console emulator, which included specific graphics display functions per game inside it,” LuigiBlood said. “But in an attempt to make more games work, it was decided to remove these functions from the emulator, and attempt to have a way to configure the graphics through external means like configuration files. This was specifically done for NSO, and in their attempt of doing so, they clearly broke graphics emulation in the process and possibly didn’t have enough time to fix it.”
There is still a long way to go to fully fix the emulation woes, but Nintendo appears to be making good on its promise to "improve and expand" the Switch Online Service.
For those looking to play more of their favorite classic games on Switch, they will be happy to know that Banjo-Kazooie is now available and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask will arrive sometime in February.

Yakuza Series Creator Toshihiro Nagoshi Establishes Nagoshi Studio at NetEase Games
NetEase Games has announced that it has established Nagoshi Studio, a new game development studio that is led by Yakuza series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi.
As reported by Gematsu, Nagoshi confirmed that he would be leaving both Ryu Ga Gatoku Studio and SEGA back in October 2021 and a report came out that said he was in "final negotiations" with Chinese developer and publisher NetEase to join the company. Nagoshi had been with SEGA and RGG Studio since 1989.
Nagoshi shared a message to commemorate the news, saying he and his team are committed to "creating content for the world to enjoy."
"The sea of change that began in the entertainment industry in the late 20th century has brought even greater change to the industry in the 21st century," Nagoshi wrote. "Changes to entertainment content, how it’s made and the business model driven by technology and infrastructure advances have sparked a paradigm shift, and these changes are continuing to unfold with greater and greater speed.
"What only yesterday had been considered the height of cool now suddenly becomes outdated before you know it. For creators, this makes working in the industry today incredibly challenging. But no matter how the times change, I believe that what people essentially want from entertainment has not changed one bit. People see their dreams in entertainment. People look to entertainment to give them hope in life, to soothe them in times of difficulty, and to add excitement in happy times.
"People look to entertainment to provide the spark for all kinds of events. The appetite for entertainment is the same today as it was in the past. There are obviously differences between the past and the present in how entertainment is consumed, its volume and velocity, but its essence remains the same. The only way to deliver this essence to the world is if all creators approach the works they create with seriousness and clarity while grinding away to get closer to reaching the ideal.
"One of my goals at this studio is to create an open atmosphere. This may sound like an overly simplistic goal. But even the most talented creators cannot fully unleash their abilities in isolation. I believe that the first step to creating high-quality titles and delivering the essence of entertainment with strong motivation starts with creating an open atmosphere in the studio.
"This means having open-ended discussions that ignore seniority and hierarchy. This means not fearing mistakes while also not being afraid to correct them, and treating failures as assets. This means not giving up on reaching the ideal, and fighting to get closer to it. This may seem so simple, but the simplest things can unexpectedly be the hardest to do, and at the same time the most important. Nagoshi Studio is committed to creating content for the world to enjoy from this atmosphere."
Nagoshi is joined by eight other individuals who will serve as the founding members of the studio, and the list includes Yakuza series producer Daisuke Sato - the previous head of RGG Studios for nine years and a Director at Nagoshi Studio.
The other seven members of the staff include artist Kazuki Hosokawa, programmer Koji Tokieda, game designer Masao Shirosaki, Mitsunori Fujimoto, artist Naoki Someya, director Taichi Ushioda, and Toshihiro Ando.
Nagoshi joined SEGA in its early arcade days and was an important part of the development of Virtua Racing, Monkey Ball, and more before founding RGG Studio and the Yakuza franchise.
While we don't yet know what game Nagoshi Studio is working on, we do know that RGG Studio is developing a sequel to Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

Spider-Man: No Way Home Is Back on Top of the Domestic Weekend Box Office
After Scream ended its four-week winning streak on top of the domestic weekend box office last week, Spider-Man: No Way Home has once again swung to the top with $14.1 million in ticket sales.
As reported by Variety, Spider-Man: No Way Home is still performing incredibly well after its sixth weekend in theaters and held off all other films released in North America, including newcomers Redeeming Love and The King's Daughter. Redeeming Love placed fourth with $3.7 million and The King's Daughter only made it to eighth-place with $750,000.
Spider-Man: No Way Home has now crossed $1.69 billion worldwide, with $721 million of that coming in from North America and $970 million arriving from overseas. It now only sits behind Avatar's $760 million, Avengers: Endgame's $858 million, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens' $936 million as the fourth highest-grossing domestic film of all time.
Worldwide, it has officially passed The Lion King and Jurassic World to claim the #6 spot. It sits behind Avengers: Infinity War, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Titanic, Avengers: Endgame, and Avatar.
Scream had a respectable second-place finish with $12.4 million in ticket sales and the fifth film in the slasher franchise saw a 59% decrease in sales week-over-week. After two weeks in theaters, Scream has earned $51.3 million domestically, $33.6 million internationally, and $84.9 million globally.
Sing 2 also continues to impress with another week at #3 as it brought in $5.7 million in its fifth weekend. Sing 2 has earned $128 million domestically and $241 million globally to become the highest-grossing animated film in pandemic times.
Rounding out the top five was The King's Man and its $1.8 million weekend. It has grossed $31.5 million domestically and $105.3 million worldwide.
Spider-Man: No Way Home won't have much competition in the box office until Uncharted - another Tom Holland-led film - arrives in theaters on February 18 and Robert Pattinson's The Batman opens on March 4.

Dark Souls Series PvP Servers Are Down on PC Following the Discovery of a ‘Serious Exploit’
Following the discovery of a "serious exploit," the PC PvP servers for Dark Souls: Remastered, Dark Souls 2, and Dark Souls 3 have been temporarily deactivated as Bandai Namco works on a solution.
On Reddit, users like TripleBrownMeow shared a Discord message in the Elden Ring Subreddit saying that a RCE (Remote Code Execution) exploit was discovered that could let hackers "run arbitrary code on your machine without permission."
This RCE exploit could allow these hackers to "brick your computer," "steal your logins and banking information stored on your computer," "execute malicious malware like bitcoin miners," and more.
It was also said this issue could have caused similar problems in FromSoftware's next game, Elden Ring.
Bandai Namco thanked the posters on Reddit and said the "topic was submitted to relevant internal teams earlier today." It also followed up with a Tweet confirming an investigation was underway.
"PvP servers for Dark Souls 3, Dark Souls 2, and Dark Souls: Remastered have been temporarily deactivated to allow the team to investigate recent reports of an issue with online services," Dark Souls' Twitter account wrote. "Servers for Dark Souls: PtDE will join them shortly. We apologize for this inconvenience. This downtime does not affect PvP servers for Xbox or PlayStation consoles."

Annihilation Director Is Making a Movie About a Near Future American Civil War Starring Kirsten Dunst
Annihilation writer and director Alex Garland is teaming up with A24 to make Civil War, a film about a near future American civil war that stars The Power of the Dog and Spider-Man's Kirsten Dunst.
Alongside Dunst, this new film will also star Narcos' Wagner Moura, Dune's Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Mare of Easttown's Cailee Spaeny.
Garland will write the screenplay for Civil War, and it will be produced by A24, Gregory Goodman, and DNA's Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich.
Dunst, who many will remember as Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, recently starred in The Power of the Dog as Rose Gordon alongside Benedict Cumberbatch and earned a Golden Globe nomination for her performance.
Dunst also starred in the USS Callister episode of Black Mirror, Hidden Figures, Fargo, and more.
Garland himself received an Academy Award nomination for Best Writing, Original Screenplay for Ex Machina, and he won an Academy Award for Best Achievement in Visual Effects for the film.
In addition to writing and directing the Hulu miniseries Devs, he has been a big name in the video game world as he co-wrote Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, was a story supervisor on DmC: Devil May Cry, and wrote a script for a canceled Halo movie in 2005.

Halo Infinite Multiplayer Will Let You Earn Credits In Its Season 2 Battle Pass
Halo Infinite's multiplayer will let players earn Credits in its Season 2 Battle Pass that they will be able to use in the in-game shop to buy items, cosmetics, and even a new Battle Pass.
Shared by 343 Industries Head of Design Jerry Hook and following "continued feedback" from the community, 343 has decided to make it so Credits will be earnable in Halo Infinite's next Battle Pass, which will begin after Season 1 comes to a close in May 2022.
"Thanks to your continued feedback, we are happy to confirm Credits will be earnable in Season 2's Battle Pass," Hook wrote. "That means you will be able to earn Credits as part of your Halo Infinite progression. We’ll have more to share on this as we get closer to Season 2."
Hook also gave an update on the team's focus on "reducing pricing across the board" in Halo Infinite's multiplayer. He shared that while this week was all about reducing the prices of the weekly bundles, next week will see some individual items from those bundles appearing on their own.
In regards to the ongoing issues with Big Team Battle matchmaking, 343 will also be removing any Challenges that require BTB when the Weekly Challenges reset on Tuesday until a solution is found. This will ensure the team doesn't remove anyone's progress from this week and will make it so no one will be stuck with Challenges that are tough to complete because of these problems.
Halo Infinite's BTB hotfix that was released earlier this week was "not as effective as we hoped," according to Hook, but it "also contained additional telemetry that has been providing promising data to the team."

Knives Out 2 Is Set to Be Released on Netflix in Late 2022
The next Benoit Blanc mystery will premiere later this year after it’s been reported Knives Out 2 will hit Netflix sometime this fall.
Variety says Knives Out 2, director Rian Johnson’s follow-up to the critically-acclaimed murder-mystery, will be released in the last quarter of 2022. Netflix announced it purchased two Knives Out sequels back in March 2021 for $450 million.
Netflix is also hoping Knives Out 2 will be an award-winner, just like the first film which earned an Academy Award nomination for best original screenplay. Director Rian Johnson is also returning to write and direct the sequel.
Like classic whodunnits, the Knives Out sequels will only retain Daniel Craig’s southern detective Benoit Blanc as he investigates a new case with new characters. So while you shouldn’t expect to see cast members from the first movie, Knives Out 2 has already cast actors like Dave Bautista, Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, and more.
As for the mystery itself, details are being kept under wraps naturally, though we can hopefully expect to see some twists and Blanc’s eccentric witticisms.
The first Knives Out was a commercial and critical success. You can read IGN’s Knives Out review here for our take on the modern mystery. Knives Out 2 isn’t the only throwback whodunnit hitting theaters in 2022, either. The delayed Death on the Nile, Kenneth Branagh’s update on the Hercule Poirot mystery is also coming to theaters this year.
