Apple’s Mac 2021 Event: Everything Announced

The Apple Unleashed Event was a banger of an event with a brand new pair of AirPods 3rd Generation and of course new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros. On top of that Apple also announced a few new smaller products including HomePods in new colors and the addition of Playlists for Apple Music. In case you missed the live event, we've rounded up all the announcements from Apple's second Fall hardware event.

AirPods 3rd Generation

The AirPods 3rd Generation got a huge update with a new design, spatial audio, and touch buttons that puts it more in line with the AirPods Pro. The new AirPods feature shorter stems and contoured ear tips that better direct sound directly into your ear canal. On top of that, they now feature spatial sound so as you turn your head from your device, the left and right channels will shift audio to match your orientation.

The AirPods 3rd Generation also offers sweat and water resistance, though Apple hasn't exactly said what the IP rating is. Battery life has also been increased to six hours of listening and the case gives your four full charges for a total of 30 hours of listening time. Also, just five minutes of charging gives you a full hour of run time.

The AirPods 3rd Generation is available for preorder starting today for $129 and will be available next week.

MacBook Pro

The new MacBook Pro is finally here with new 14- and 16-inch models. The design has been completely overhauled with a more squared squared-off chassis, raised feet, the return of MagSafe and HDMI ports and SD card readers, and even a screen notch... The good news is the notch is essentially hidden and integrated into the menu bar at the top of the macOS interface.

The screen is bigger and better now that all the bezels measure just 3.5mm. The 14-inch screen features a 3,024 x 1, 964 resolution while the 16.2-inch model's display resolution is 3,456x 2,234. Additionally, both displays support 120Hz ProMotion, local dimming, 1,000 nits of sustained brightness, 1,600 nits of peak brightness, and a 1 million to 1 contrast ratio.

As you can see from the images the speaker grills are back and they're not just for show, underneath there's a six-speaker sound system with two tweeters, four woofers, and two subs. According to Apple, the speaker system delivers 80 percent more bass and it works with spatial audio too.

Ports are also back and you get HDMI, a headphone jack, an SD card reader, and MagSafe. The MagSafe 3 features a new design that allows it to carry more power and you can still charge your device with Thunderbolt.

As for dimensions, the MacBook Pro 16-inch measures 16.8mm thick and weighs 4.7lbs. The 14-inch is 15.5mm thick and weighs 3.5lbs.

M1 Pro and M1 Max

We expected to see a new M1X Mac processor, but Apple flipped the script and announced two new chips with the M1 Pro and M1 Max.

The M1 Pro is essentially the step-up chip from the M1 launched last year that brings a 10 core CPU and 32 GPU with up to 32GB of unified memory and 200GBps of memory bandwidth. Comparatively, the M1 has four CPU cores and eight GPU cores. Translated to actual power, the M1 Pro has two times the graphical performance of the M1.

The M1 Max is basically an even more souped-up M1 processor with 10 CPU cores and 32 GPU cores plus 64GB of unified memory and 200GBps of memory bandwidth. Apple is making some bold claims about the M1 Max using 70% less power than an 8 core CPU PC and 3.3x times the graphical performance of a high-end laptop (with the asterisk of the PC being on battery power).

The MacBook Pro 14-inch starts at $1,999 and the MacBook Pro 16-inch costs $2,499. They're both available to order today and will be available starting next week.

Apple Music Playlists and Voice Plan

Apple is one of the best streaming music services around but it's never had playlists that is until now. Siri is being updated to deliver playlists based on activities and moods like dinner parties, hiking, yoga, game night, and more.

On top of that, Apple is introducing a new Voice Plan for Apple Music for $4.99 per month. The idea behind this new plan is listeners will be able to ask Siri to play tunes from select playlists instead of being able to access the full library on Apple Music, which normally costs $9.99.

New HomePod Mini Colors

The HomePod Mini launched last year with only black and white models and now the mini Bluetooth speaker is getting a much-needed dash of color with yellow, orange, and blue.

Venom 2 Secretly Includes Footage Of Matrix Resurrections Filming

It seems traces of another Hollywood blockbuster can be seen in Venom 2, but you have to know where to look.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which is in theaters now, and The Matrix Resurrections, which is coming this December, were both filming in San Francisco in February of 2020. This led to some production difficulties for the Venom sequel, but also accidentally resulted in a fun easter egg,

In a bit of impromptu thinking, the Venom team decided to utilize the nearby helicopters, being used for Matrix, and incorporate them into their own action sequences.

"The helicopters were actually on the Matrix movie," Venom 2 Location Manager Christopher Kusiak said regarding one Venom 2 action scene to Screen Rant. The Matrix was filming at the same time so we were catching part of their activity on camera."

At one point in Venom: Let There Be Carnage, you can see and hear multiple helicopters in pursuit of some of the movie's main characters. Instead of using their helicopters, the Venom team was able to use Matrix's helicopters for their scenes. We'll have to wait and see if the same helicopters make an appearance in The Matrix Resurrections this December.

The shared setting didn't always benefit Venom's production, however. "A lot of our driving shots went away because Matrix controlled all of downtown," Kusiak said. "We ended up moving a stunt up onto the top of the parking garage because we couldn’t get to the areas we wanted because of The Matrix. But if we would’ve been there first, it probably would’ve gone the other way."

For more, check out our Venom 2 review, or if you've already seen the movie, our Venom 2 ending explained. As for the Matrix, you can watch our latest Matrix Resurrections trailer breakdown.

Dwayne Johnson Is Not Backing Down on His Feud With Vin Diesel

Dwayne Johnson has spoken out about his ongoing feud with fellow Fast and Furious star Vin Diesel. Speaking with Vanity Fair, Johnson revealed he only agreed to appear in The Fate of the Furious as long as he didn't appear in any scenes with Diesel. “I wanted to forgo drama,” Johnson said. “I thought that that was the best thing to do. For everybody.”

The feud started way back in 2016 when The Rock called out some of his unnamed male co-stars as "candy asses." In the interview, Johnson described a "candy ass" as, “something you don’t want to be. And the best way that I can describe a candy ass is: Life is so much easier, I have found, when you are not full of sh*t. And a candy ass is completely full of sh*t.”

Johnson says he shouldn't have shared the post, although he still meant what he said. Johnson also claims members of the film crew agreed with his post, saying "[it was] as if every single crew member found their way to me and either quietly thanked me or sent me a note" after they saw the Instagram post.

The two actors apparently had a talk in Johnson's trailer, where Johnson says, "It really became just crystal clear that we are two separate ends of the spectrum. And agreed to leave it there.”

Diesel spoke out about the feud earlier this summer, saying he gave Johnson "tough love to assist in getting that performance where it needed to be." Responding to this quote, Johnson said, "I go into every project giving it my all. And if I feel that there’s some things that need to be squared away and handled and taken care of, then I do it. And it’s just that simple. So, when I read that, just like everybody else, I laughed. I laughed hard. We all laughed."

It doesn't seem this fight will be resolved any time soon, as Johnson has confirmed he won't appear in Fast and Furious 10 or 11. However, the actor has confirmed that a sequel to 2019's Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is in active development.

Madden 22’s Ongoing Roadmap Will Be ‘Slightly Less Ambitious’ Than in the Past

Fans shouldn't expect too many big content drops for Madden 22. Speaking with IGN about Madden 22's rocky launch, executive producer Seann Graddy discussed the roadmap for Madden 22 and beyond, saying new modes aren't the priority right now.

"I would say [the roadmap is] probably slightly less ambitious than years past because we are really focused on a few core areas of Madden 22 and also getting started up on Madden 23 in a big way," Graddy says. "So I will stand by what we've always said the last couple of years: we're a live service and we'll continue to update the game, but we’re definitely not going to be talking about a brand new mode."

In the past, developers have dropped new modes and features in free updates to the game. They include features like Superstar KO, an arcade mode that proved popular with more casual players.

One big addition the team made sure to implement was adding scouting to franchise mode. The much-requested feature was delayed back in September, but was added as part of the big October title update that's available today.

For more, check out the full interview with Graddy on the plans to fix Madden 22. Or, check out our Madden 22 review, where we said, "Madden NFL 22 is a grab bag of decent – if frequently underwhelming – ideas hurt by poor execution."

The Walking Dead Is Getting an Anthology Series, Tales of the Walking Dead

AMC has announced that The Walking Dead will be getting an anthology spin-off series called Tales of the Walking Dead that will tell one-hour standalone stories of new and established characters from the zombie-filled universe of The Walking Dead.

Tales of the Walking Dead will premiere in Summer 2022 on AMC and AMC+ and production will begin early next year. The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead's writer and producer Channing Powell will serve as showrunner and will be working closely with Scott M. Gimple - the chief content officer of the Walking Dead Universe - on this new series that will have a six-episode first season.

"We see so much potential for a wide range of rich and compelling storytelling in this world, and the episodic anthology format of ‘Tales of the Walking Dead’ will give us the flexibility to entertain existing fans and also offer an entry point for new viewers, especially on streaming platforms," president of original programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios Dan McDermott said. "We have seen the appeal of this format in television classics like ‘The Twilight Zone’ and, more recently, ‘Black Mirror,’ and are excited to engage with fans in this new way, against the backdrop of this very unique and engrossing world.”

Gimple also said that "this series, more than any other in the Walking Dead Universe, runs on new voices, perspectives, and ideas -- bringing to life stories unlike any we've been told before."

Tales of the Walking Dead will begin as The Walking Dead's 11th and final season comes to a close. The second part of this season will start on February 20, 2022, and the third and final part will debut sometime in the second half of 2022.

Walking Dead fans have no reason to worry that the main series is ending, as this new anthology series will join the ever-expanding series that includes Fear the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, a Rick Grimes movie, a spin-off about Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier, and another possible spin-off focused on Negan.
