Batgirl: New Story Details and Suit Revealed for Live-Action Movie – DC FanDome 2021

Warner Bros. and DC have revealed new story details and a first-look at the Batgirl suit. The announcement was made during the Batgirl panel at DC's FanDome. Check out the concept art for Batgirl's suit in the image below:

In terms of the story, writer Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey, Bumblebee) describes what we can expect from the story. "What's kind of funny about Barbara [Gordon] and Batgirl is that in this story, she's discovering Batgirl for the first time," Hodson explained. "So she's getting to explore a duality she's always had in her personality, but it's this whole new side of her personality, a side that's more daring and slightly less normal side of her that we just get to have fun and play with."

Directors Adil El Arbit and Bilall Fallah discused their excitement for the upcoming DC film. "We feel very excited and privaleged to be a part of this world," Arbit said. With Fallah adding, "It's really unbelieveable. I feel like a kid again."

Batman: Caped Crusader Is ‘Adult’, ‘Psychologially Complex’, and Includes New Versions of Familiar Characters – DC FanDome 2021

We didn't get a first look at Batman: Caped Crusader today, but we learned a lot about the upcoming HBO Max animated series – including its adult themes, authentic '40s-style setting, modern approach to inclusivity, and how it will change familiar characters.

In a video presentation at DC FanDome 2021, executive producers Bruce Timm, JJ Abrams and Matt Reeves, as well as co-producer James Tucker, explained their vision for the show. Timm, who co-created Batman: The Animated Series gave a simple logline: "It's more Batman: The Animated Series than Batman: The Animated Series."

The idea, essentially, is that the show captures what Timm was originally aiming for with the classic animation, including elements he wasn't allowed to include at the time. "It kind of goes back to the original principles of the show that we originally came up with in the early '90s," Timm explains. "There were certain limitations on what we could do in terms of adult content; in terms of violence and adult themes."

He continued, "My idea is basically to say, 'OK, it's 1990 again, I get to do what I want to do this time, and I got JJ and Matt backing me up."

Abrams added that Caped Crusader, "Really is an incredibly complex psychological story about someone who, in a way, needs to be redeemed – and that's kind of what at least this first season is about."

While we don't know any inidividual storylines for the first season, we do know that the show will be set around a version of Batman who is entirely alone in his fight against crime. As Reeves puts it, "There's not the Justice League. It doesn't exist. There aren't any other superheroes. It's Batman. You're watching this lone figure swimming through the cesspool of Gotham. It's Batman, alone."

To make things more difficult, this is also a version of Batman who hasn't yet poured his wealth into gadgetry: "So he's going to be very low-tech, initially. You know, as he develops as a character, we'll start introducing those gadgets and the audience can see how he developed the Batmobile using different prototypes. That's part of the fun of this series is we're finding him discovering these things that, [in] most other Batman series, they already were there."

And to cap things off, Batman won't even have many of his non-superhero friends to help either. Tucker continues: "We're starting before Batman has earned their trust, and they've earned Batman's trust, so there's nothing assumed. We don't know that Commissioner Gordon will be Batman's ally [...] Nothing is assumed in this series as far as what we're used to seeing in the world of Batman."

This leads to another major point about the show – while this continues in the spirit of The Animated Series, it's very much telling a new story. And that includes some of Batman's most famous adversaries. As Timm explains: "What this does is it gives us the opportunity to say, 'OK, the versions of Joker and Catwoman and Penguin, those versions that we did on Batman: The Animated Series were really great and iconic, but there's lots of different ways that we can take those characters that we hope will be just as iconic and just as powerful."

We've yet to see any imagery from the show aside from an announcement poster, but we did learn a little about how the show will look. Timm originally pitched the idea using his own Batman: Strange Days short, which was a noir-inflected, black and white animation.

While Caped Crusader won't be in black and white (unless, as Tucker explains, they do it for a special episode), the show will lean heavily on film noir and German expressionist tropes for its look. Timm's also aiming to recreate an authentic world based on the 1940s Batman was originally created in, including the clothes, hairstyles, hats, vehicles, and architecture included.

But the show will embrace more modernity in its approach to inclusivity and representation among characters. JJ Abrams adds that, in terms of the animation itself, the show will also use techniques that didn't exist when the original '90s animated series was created.

The show still doesn't have a firm release date, but will be headed to HBO Max and Cartoon Network.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Trailer Easter Egg Honors the Characters’ Comic Book Origins – DC FanDome 2021

The brand-new Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League trailer features an Easter Egg that honors the comic book origins of main characters Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, and King Shark.

As reported by GamesRadar.com, the Suicide Squad trailer, which debuted at DC FanDome 2021, gives us another glimpse at these four characters and one scene at the beginning shows them in prison garb. While that alone may not be too surprising considering these characters have dark pasts, the numbers on their clothes reference their first appearance in the comics.

Captain Boomerang sports the number 117-12-60 and it is a reference to his first appearance in The Flash #117 in December 1960. Deadshot's inmate number is 59-06-50 and honors his debut in Batman #59 in June 1950.

King Shark, who is wearing a prison uniform that hints he was transferred from Belle Reve Federal Penitentiary, has the number 001094 - a reference to his first showing in Superboy #0 in October 1994. For those unaware, Belle Reve is one of the main prisons where Amanda Waller finds her recruits in the comics and films.

Harley Quinn does not appear to have a number, and this actually makes a bit of sense as she did not make her first appearance in the comics. Harley Quinn was first shown in Batman: The Animated Series long before she made the jump to the pages of comic books.

The Suicide Squad trailer from DC FanDome 2021 gave us a much better look at the world Rocksteady is creating, and gave us our first look at The Flash, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman.

While we didn't get any release date news besides a reconfirmation that the game will be released in 2022, we did learn much more about the game's story. What starts as a mission against a seemingly alien threat quickly becomes a race to kill the corrupted versions of some members of the Justice League. While we did see some of the Justice League members in their corrupted form, Batman has yet to show his face. We did get a glimpse of the Batmobile, but that's about it.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League can be played either solo or with up to three friends and will feature customizable weapons, unique abilities for each character, and much more.

Gotham Knights Gets a New Story Trailer, But No New Release Date

Gotham Knights has gotten a new story trailer and behind-the-scenes featurette. Unfortunately, after a recent delay into 2022, we didn't get a new release date.

Shown at DC FanDome 2021, the story trailer shows Nightwing talking to supervillain The Penguin, who explains that the Batfamily – Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, and Red Hood – don't stand a chance in a Gotham being run by the deadly secret society, The Court of Owls.

The trailer goes onto show action scenes featuring the entire Batfamily, multiple Talons (the Court of Owls' assassins), and some intriguing locations featuring dungeon-like traps, scattered bones, and even a mysteriously placed Bat Signal.

A separate behind-the-scenes featurette included game developers, Court of Owls co-creators Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, and DC CCO Jim Lee discussing the game and its inspirations.

Snyder explains that what he's seen of the game, saying "I was blown away. It took what we had done with Court of Owls but it just elevated it beyond a lot of the borders that we had had." The upshot is that this is an extended version of the Court as fans will already know it.

Gotham Knights creative director Patrick Redding explains that Talons have been designed in wildly different ways, designed to get players to choose different gear to beat them more effectively. "So, like any good RPG," he explains, "we're presenting you with a problem, and then we're presenting you with a range of potential solutions, and then players will have an opportunity to maximise that according to their own style."

Announced last year, Gotham Knights is set in a universe where Bruce Wayne/Batman has died. Now, members of the Wayne Family including Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, and Red Hood must work together to protect Gotham City in his absence.

As part of the premise, Gotham Knights supports two-player, drop-in co-op, allowing you to play with a friend or solo as you fight villains like Mr. Freeze and the Court of Owls. We had a lot of our biggest questions about the game answered last year.
