Super Nintendo World Forced to Closure Just a Month After Grand Opening

Super Nintendo World, the Universal theme park dedicated to Super Mario Bros., has been forced to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic, barely a month after its original grand opening. As reported by Ars Technica, Universal Studios is shutting down the park starting April 25 in what the company is calling a "temporary closure." The shutdown comes as part of a broader lockdown order in the Osaka area. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/03/26/the-best-activities-at-super-nintendo-world-right-now"] "We sincerely apologize for causing any inconvenience to our guests who were looking forward to visiting us. Detailed instructions regarding previously purchased tickets will be listed on our official website tonight," Universal Studios said in an official release. Super Nintendo World officially opened back in March, with our review lauding it for the way that it "brilliantly reinvents and gamifies the theme park experience." The theme park is part of Nintendo's effort to expand the reach of its most popular characters through merchandise, theme parks, movies, and other transmedia ventures. A North American version is currently under construction in Orlando, but its opening has been pushed back to at least 2025. Ultimately, it's an open question when Super Nintendo World will be able to reopen. Japan's vaccine rollout has been extremely slow, threatening major events like the Olympics. Osaka's state of emergency will continue until at least May 11. Hopeful as recent progress has been, we've still got a long way to go before things get back to something resembling normality. In the meantime, we have a lot of neat photos from our tour of Super Nintendo World back in March, so hopefully that can tide you over at least a little bit. Scott Pilgrim Director Holds ‘No Bitterness’ for Box Office Flop

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World director Edgar Wright says that he has “ no bitterness at all for how [the movie] did 11 years ago.”

In a lengthy interview with Collider, Wright discussed the film’s legacy as a cult favorite, how he coped with its lackluster performance at the box office (earning only roughly half of its $85 million budget back), and how the divisive ending came to be.

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/03/24/scott-pilgrim-vs-the-world-10th-anniversary-release-official-trailer"]

“It’s a funny thing,” Wright said. “Michael Moses, who's the head of marketing at Universal, he sent me the best email the Monday after it came out. I was very proud of the movie, but it's that weird thing where you get emails from people where they kind of think that you might be suicidal or something (laughs). I was like, 'Well, I'm still promoting the movie. I'm here in London in fact, to do a premiere. So I'm keeping upbeat about things.'" Wright continued, "But he sent the best email that I've ever had about movie. So it opens it number five. I deliberately that weekend did not read any of the trades. I figured it's not a good thing. It's not useful in any way to read Deadline or Box Office Mojo, or any of those things. So I didn't, and I still never have. But he sent me this email, and all it said was, "Years, not days." It was just one of the best emails about anything in my career I've ever received. Michael Moses sent an email and all it said was, "Years, not days."

Scott Pilgrim, based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s then in-progress graphic novel, did eventually become a cultural success, spawning countless bits of merchandise, including a beat-em-up video game and multiple board games. The film is returning for a 10th-anniversary celebration on April 30 at select Dolby Cinema locations across the U.S.

Wright compared Scott Pilgrim’s life beyond the box office to similar cinema classics, like John Carpenter’s The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, or Blade Runner, none of which performed exceptionally in theaters.

“There's tons of them that obviously you think were hits, and then you realize, "Oh, that wasn't a hit when it came out?" It's funny, when you look at Big Trouble in Little China, it did not even crack the top 10 when it came out, which is insane,” Wright said. “But then I think about when I saw it in 1986, I was alone in the cinema watching it (laughs).”

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/11/17/director-styles-movie-lists-cinefix"]

Throughout the years, there’s been plenty of rumors and tidbits about the possibility of a Scott Pilgrim sequel, but almost never any confirmation either way. Wright told Collider that there’s still some potential for more Scott Pilgrim universe adventures.

“So the nice thing was I knew that people there loved it, and also — because over the years there's never been a call for a sequel because I think that’s something that is financially not manageable, but it kept getting re-released on Blu-ray,” Wright said. “I mean, more fucking Funko Pops than you can imagine. You could fill a house with Funko Pops of Scott Pilgrim. And then occasionally you'd get calls from Universal saying, 'Is there anything else we can do with Scott Pilgrim?' I can't speak out of turn, but there's still some potential things that might happen in that regard.”

As for Scott Pilgrim’s lasting legacy, Wright intimates that he’s just happy the cast largely still considers it a positive step in their career. For many, it was an early step towards absolute stardom, with Captain America’s Chris Evans and Captain Marvel’s Brie Larson appearing as members of Ramona Flowers’ evil exes. The cast also included Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Aubrey Plaza, Anna Kendrick, Superman actor Brandon Routh, and others.

“That's the funny thing is the trailer now, you can rattle off all those names,” Wright said. “Back then, there was nobody above the title. Not even Michael was above the title when it came out before. Listen, I have no bitterness at all for how it did 11 years ago. It just doesn't matter. And I sort of knew that at the time, even though it was a tough thing — basically, when that happens, more what you’re thinking is like, "Will I be allowed to work again?" (laughs) That's what your main priority is, will they let me make another film? And so, I've been very fortunate. ”

[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=top-25-best-anime-series-of-all-time&captions=true"]

Scott Pilgrim diehards also know that the theatrical ending (wherein Scott and Ramona get together again) wasn’t the original one the crew had filmed. The original had Knives Chau, Scott’s 17-year-old ex, get back together with him even after he cheated on her with Ramona. Of the two endings, Wright says he prefers the theatrical cut with Scott and Ramona.

“I think me and [writer] Michael Bacall originally, we were trying to write an ending that was in the vein of The Graduate or The Heartbreak Kid, where our hero gets what he wants, but maybe that isn't what he needs,” Wright said. “But then trying to do that scene or that tone with Ellen Wong, the most adorable actress on the planet, it just didn't feel right. It felt like trying to do this kind of ending is unfair on Knives and unfair on Ellen. [...] But then when I told her, I said, "So we're going to shoot a new ending." And then when I told her what it was, she goes, "Oh, I'm so glad you said that, because I was thinking Knives is too proud to take him back. It makes her look really weak that she takes him back after he cheated on her." And I was thinking, "Oh, thank God.'” Scott Pilgrim's 10th anniversary is past, but the film lives on. No Post-Kredits Scene in Mortal Kombat

Warning: Very vague spoilers for Mortal Kombat follow. [poilib element="accentDivider"] The Mortal Kombat reboot movie has bicycle-kicked its way into theaters and HBO Max, and many fans may be wondering, is there a post-credits scene? Has director Simon McQuoid stuck an additional Easter egg at the end, or is it safe to leave once the credits roll? It certainly wouldn't be a surprise to see an extra mid or post-credits scene given that we already know sequels are being discussed. In fact, Sub-Zero actor Joe Taslim is currently signed on for four (!) more Mortal Kombat movies, should Warner Bros. opt to continue this new incarnation of the franchise. Why not start teasing those sequels now? Read on for the answer as to whether or not you need to stick around during the credits (unless of course you want to read the names of all the people who worked on the film, in which case you totally should stick around!). [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=mortal-kombats-bizarre-history-of-movie-and-tv-adaptations&captions=true"]

Mortal Kombat Does Not Have a Post-Credits Scene

Sorry, but Mortal Kombat does not have any additional footage hidden during or after the credits. Perhaps that's not surprising, given that the movie itself is pretty direct about dropping hints as to what's coming next. The ending directly sets the stage for a sequel, and more than one MK icon appears in cameo form, suggesting they'll be playing bigger roles in Round 2. In fact, the final scene (and shot) of the film feels like it could've served as a post-credits scene, but McQuoid and the studio obviously decided to use it to end their film. It Takes Two Selling 1 Million Copies Shows That Players Want Co-op Only Games, Josef Fares Says

It Takes Two has officially sold over one million copies, and its writer and director Josef Fares says that this proves there are players who want to play co-op only games. It Takes Two developer Hazelight Studios shared the news on Twitter, saying, "Wow!!! Just found out #ItTakesTwo has sold over 1 million copies and is still going strong! Thank you so much for all the love you've shown our game, it means the world to us." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/04/10/josef-fares-responds-to-ign-comments"] Fares Quote Tweeted that message, adding that "this shows that there definitely is players that also wants to play co op only games! Thank you everyone and I hope we see more games like this." This milestone arrives after many in the gaming community, including IGN, praised the game's beautiful, fun, and inventive world. In our It Takes Two review, we said it "is a spectacular co-op adventure that lays down a path of great gameplay ideas and uses it to play a giddy game of hopscotch. It’s beautiful, breakneck-paced, and bubbling over with creativity, and playfulness and experimentation are rewarded at every turn. If you have any kind of co-op partner in your life, be they spouse, friend, sibling, or other (even a child, though the themes might be too mature for them), It Takes Two is a truly joyful trip you really need to take together." Parasite HBO Series Will Be an Original Story, Not a Remake of the Movie

Bong Joon-ho and Adam McKay's Parasite HBO series will tell an original story "in the same universe" as the Oscar-winning movie. McKay, who is serving as one of the executive producers on the series along with Bong, the director of the 2019 movie, shared some details about the HBO limited series during a recent appearance on MTV's Happy Sad Confused podcast. In particular, McKay offered some clarity on how the series will connect to the original movie - which told the story of two families on opposite ends of the economic scale. Speaking about the story they have planned out for the six episodes, McKay emphasized that HBO's Parasite will not be a remake of the South Korean thriller but rather an original series with an all-new story that takes place in the same world as the movie. "It's an original series," he confirmed. "It's in the same universe as the feature, but it's an original story that lives in that same world." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/28/parasite-storyboards-set-to-be-released-as-a-graphic-novel-ign-news"] McKay also revealed that the series is "chugging full speed ahead," with pre-production starting to ramp up before they move onto the later filming stages. "We're just having the best time," he said. "We've just staffed up with an incredible writers' room. I basically outlined the series with director Bong during the quarantine, with him overseeing." HBO's Parasite series was previously described as "a high-quality, expanded film," with Bong explaining how the TV show format would offer them a space to expand upon the movie and explore the different types of stories "that could happen in between the sequences you see in the film, and some background stories for each character" from the award-sweeping movie. Parasite made history at the Oscars last year when it became the first foreign-language film to win Best Picture. The movie also picked up awards for Best International Feature, and Best Original Screenplay, while Bong became the first South Korean filmmaker to win Best Director. With armfuls of trophies, Bong tied with Walt Disney for the most Oscar wins in one night. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=oscar-record-holders&captions=true"] In addition to its Academy Awards success, Parasite picked up a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture in the Foreign Language category as well as a BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in the English Language. The movie also became the first non-English language feature to win the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. IGN's review of Parasite commended Bong for crafting "a stellar dark comedy about class warfare" told via "a heartbreaking tale of why the haves and have-nots will stay that way, crafted by a virtuoso director at the very top of his game." IGN also named Parasite the best movie of 2019 and one of the best movies of the past decade. New Pokemon Snap Website Gives a Tour of the Lental Region Ahead of Launch

New Pokemon Snap has received a snazzy new website dedicated to helping players learn the basics before jumping into the Lental region when the game launches next week. The game will be released on April 30 and this new website is perfect for those excited for what awaits them in New Pokemon Snap. The website, aptly named ExploreLental.com as if it were the tourism site for a real place, will require you to log in with your Nintendo account before gaining access to it. That's because you can earn My Nintendo Points while exploring the site. New Pokemon Snap Website When you make it to the actual site, you'll be shown an overview of the Lental region and you'll see eight different icons on the map. By "visiting," as it were, the eight icons on the map, you'll earn My Nintendo Points. From left to right across the map above, they are the Nature Park, Nighttime, the Desert, the Jungle, "Using Items," the Beach, "Photodex & Album," and Daytime. In the Nature Park part of the map, you'll be given a brief glimpse of what to expect there in a quick, 10-second video. The Nature Park is exactly what it sounds like: a beautiful, natural park with Pokemon like Bouffalant, Taillow, and Swanna freely roaming about. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/26/new-pokemon-snap-official-gameplay-trailer"] After viewing the video, you'll be brought to a landing page with four unique photos that show some of the things players can expect to encounter in the game such as a Grookey and a Pichu playing together, a Florges waiving at the camera, and more. Be sure to click each photo to watch a quick video showcasing how that photo was captured in the game. After checking out each of the four photos, you can then take a photo or upload your own to the site. The site will then automatically apply a website-exclusive frame based on that part of the map to your photo, at which point, you're free to save and share said photo on social media. In the Nighttime section of the map, you'll encounter Pokemon doing some unique "nighttime" activities, such as a Lyrcanroc howling in the night. It's here that you'll likely learn about the hidden trivia questions scattered about the site — we were asked how many forms of Lycanroc are in the game here. New Pokemon Snap Lycanroc Each of the other named areas of the map like the Nature Park, the Desert, the Jungle, the Beach, and Daytime feature the same kind of setup: a quick video introducing this part of the map, four photos showcasing what players can expect to see there, and a button to grab the photo frame for that area. Two of the icons on the map — "Using Items" and "Photodex & Album" — led to the more informational pages of the site. The "Using Items" page had quick explainers for how items like Fluffruit, Illumina Orbs, and Melodies work in the game. The "Photodex & Album" page explains the game's many mechanics related specifically to your photo captures such as the ability to edit them by adjusting blur, focus size, focal point, brightness, and more. The videos here also demonstrate how players can add filters, stickers, and frames to each of their photos as well as how photos are rated in the game based on the pose, size, direction, placement, whether another Pokemon is present in the capture, and the background of the photo. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/04/12/new-pokemon-snap-adventures-in-the-lental-region-trailer"] You can check out all of this and more for yourself by going to ExploreLental.com, which is now live. Be sure to check out this New Pokemon Snap overview trailer after that and then check out our list of every Pokemon confirmed in New Pokemon Snap. Monsters: Weapon X’s Barry Windsor-Smith Returns to Comics

Barry Windsor-Smith has undoubtedly earned his reputation as one of the comic book industry's finest living artists, from his hugely influential run on Marvel's Conan comics to the seminal 1991 graphic novel Weapon X. Windsor-Smith has kept a fairly low profile for the past two decades, but that promises to change very soon. Fantagraphics is finally set to release Windsor-Smith's Monsters, a graphic novel that's been in the works for no fewer than 35 years. IGN can exclusively reveal several pages from this haunting new book. Get a feel for Windsor-Smith's long-awaited return to comics in the slideshow gallery below: [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=monsters-exclusive-graphic-novel-preview&captions=true"] Monsters isn't necessarily an easy book to describe, but certain elements may resonate with fans of Windsor-Smith's Weapon X graphic novel. The book's protagonist, Bobby Bailey, is also a man trying to escape his tragic past, leading him to become a test subject for a top-secret government program. The tragic events of this story are set in motion when Bailey's commanding officer, Sergeant McFarland, attempts to intervene on his behalf, setting the stage for a multi-generational story that's equal parts espionage thriller, family drama and metaphysical character study. In this case, the monsters are both literal and figurative. For those unfamiliar with his career, Windsor-Smith rose to prominence in the early '70s through his work on Conan the Barbarian. Windsor-Smith drew the majority of the first 24 issues of that series, arguably doing more than any artist apart from Frank Frazetta to shape the look of Conan in the public consciousness. Along with writer Roy Thomas, Windsor-Smith also created Red Sonja, a character loosely based on Robert E. Howard's heroines Red Sonya of Rogatino and Dark Agnes de Chastillon. Windsor-Smith worked on a number of Marvel titles throughout the '70s and '80s, including Daredevil, The Avengers and Uncanny X-Men. His Marvel work culminated with 1991's Weapon X, a story serialized in the pages of Marvel Comics Presents that revealed how Wolverine first acquired his adamantium skeleton. Windsor-Smith also played a key role in the original incarnation of Valiant Comics, serving as the company's lead artist and creative director. Monsters will be his first published work since 2005's The Freebooters. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/05/29/conan-unconquered-launch-trailer"] “I’ve known Barry for over 50 years now,” said Fantagraphics publisher Gary Groth in the company's press release, “so publishing his biggest and most artistically mature work to date is a personal and professional milestone for me, and I’m grateful that he’s entrusted this important work to us.” The hardcover edition of Monsters clocks in at 360 pages and is priced at $39.99. The book will be released on Tuesday, April 27. In other recent comic book news, Dark Horse will publish a prequel to Netflix's Masters of the Universe: Revelation, DC is continuing a classic animated universe in Justice League Infinity and Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke is making her comic book writing debut with M.O.M.: Mother of Madness. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Team Acknowledges Recent Updates Haven’t Met Expectations

The team behind Assassin's Creed Valhalla has acknowledged that recent updates haven't met expectations, and committed to longer testing periods for updates going forward. In a blog post about the update pipeline for Assassin's Creed Valhalla, a spokesperson wrote: "Our community is at the heart of everything we do, and we always strive to provide you with great experiences. That said, we recognize that some of our recent title updates may not have met your expectations or been up to our standard." Updates to Valhalla have brought fan-requested features, but many players have reported new bugs appearing within those updates. Recently, Ubisoft added a fan-requested transmogrification feature to Valhalla, but its implementation didn't go down too well with fans. Other title updates have brought crashes and glitches to the game too. In response, Ubisoft is changing its production pipeline to deliver "more robust updates," and are shifting from a 4-week to a 5-week update release cycle so that new patches can be tested thoroughly. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/09/assassins-creed-valhalla-review"] Responding to the blog post, community members on Reddit voiced their concerns and asked about the potential of Ubisoft implementing New Game Plus to increase Valhalla's replayability. "The game is so broken lmao. Every update brings worse bugs than before. I was really looking forward to the [Wrath of the Druids] DLC since I beat the game way before the first patch, just to hear they pushed it back. If I had new game plus, I could at least enjoy everything without the game and audio crashing like it did before the patches," said TheFirstAtom. "If they mess up another update it will be embarrassing," said  Arun1910.   The blog also digs into the multi-stage process of creating title updates for a game as expansive as Assassin's Creed Valhalla, explaining each part of the pipeline in detail. It also offers timelines for a few major fixes. The full fix for an issue that sees fish disappear from the map (making related quests difficult to complete) will arrive in June, with a partial solution coming in the April update. The team is also looking into a number of issues with quests In the Absence of an Ealdorman and the Pig of Prophecy. Ubisoft plans to implement a fix for the latter in a forthcoming April title update. The team touched on the game's current roadmap and the delay of its major DLC expansion, Wrath of the Druids, which will now land on May 13. The roadmap seen below also reveals that a new free game mode called Mastery Challenge will land in late spring after the launch of Title Update 1.2.2. ACVH_DevBlog_Timeline_EN Assassin’s Creed longtime narrative director, Darby McDevitt, recently announced his departure from Ubisoft after 10 years of work writing on the franchise. Ubisoft has also announced that Ubisoft Forward, its summer digital conference, is part of E3 2021. James Gunn Clarifies Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’s Place In the MCU Timeline

James Gunn has clarified where the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special takes place within the continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Taking to Twitter on Thursday, Gunn, who helmed 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy and its 2017 sequel, shared a photo of the title page for his upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which also confirmed that it was the first draft of the script for the seasonal special, coming to Disney+ in 2022. "This is the wrapping," he wrote in the tweet's caption. "The present is inside." The filmmaker participated in a short Q&A directly beneath the tweet, as a couple of fans asked for clarity on how exactly the Holiday Special fits into the MCU timeline. In response, Gunn confirmed that it will take place after the events of Thor: Love & Thunder, which hits theaters in May 2022, but before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is scheduled to debut in 2023.   However, we may see Peter Quill and his ragtag crew before they set off on their holiday hijinks as they're slated to appear in Taika Waititi's Thor: Love & Thunder. Gunn previously confirmed that he had joined forces with Waititi to discuss MCU characters before work began on the fourth Thor script. He said they both swapped scripts to figure out "where the characters are and where they're going." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/04/20/no-guardians-of-the-galaxy-vol-4-for-james-gunn"] Quill and Thor enjoyed a friendly rivalry in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the latter of which saw the heavyset Bro Thor leave his fellow Asgardians behind on Earth whilst he joined the Guardians in space. The two characters are now expected to reunite on the big screen again in Thor 4, a movie that has been described as having an "Avengers 5 feel" due to its supersized cast. Thor 4's all-star ensemble features the likes of Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, Christian Bale, and Russell Crowe as the mighty Zeus, father of the Olympian gods. Waititi will also once again voice Thor's alien pal Korg in the movie, which is currently slated for release on May 6, 2022. It will follow Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and many more in the MCU's Phase 4.
