GTFO’s Next Big Update, Rundown #5 (aka ‘Rebirth’), Revealed and Detailed

GTFO developer 10 Chambers Collective has revealed the fifth major update (aka Rundown #5), titled "Rebirth," for its popular four-player PvE survival horror first-person shooter. The developer calls Rebirth the biggest GTFO update yet, as it will add new levels, scenarios, and boosters. "Rebirth sets players farther down into The Complex into an area called Floodways — a new environment that substitutes a dark and cold industrial aesthetic for one where nature has sought to reclaim the domain," 10 Chambers said. "Further expanding the lore of GTFO, within Floodways are clues as to why players are trapped in The Complex and imprisoned by The Warden." See more in the trailer above, and in the screenshot gallery below. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=gtfo-rundown-5-rebirth-screenshots&captions=true"] Boosts are new to GTFO; they're rewards earned in-game that will offer temporary buffs to skills, allowing for things like better weapon handling (which we take to mean less recoil when firing) and speedier terminal hacking. GTFO is available on Steam Early Access now. Check out our GTFO Early Access review to learn more of what we thought about its initial release. Call of Duty: Warzone Map Exploit Fix Is in the Works

Raven Software has said that a fix is "coming soon" for an exploit discovered in Call of Duty: Warzone's new Verdansk '84 map. "We've been looking into exploitable spots on the map that allow players to reach areas that are normally inaccessible," the studio said in a post on Twitter. "A fix is coming soon!" The tweet also includes a link to Raven's Trello board, a project management system that tracks the developer's many QA and update projects. This exploit is labelled up as "Fix Scheduled", suggesting that Raven has already developed the solution and it's in the update pipeline. The exploit in question allows players to break through the map in certain locations and walk under the surface of the battlefield. This allows players to shoot at enemies from a completely concealed location, which is - obviously - a huge problem. Verdansk '84, the Cold War-era reimagining of the original Warzone map, went live just a few days ago, and so this stands out as its first major glitch. Real-world testing often reveals problems that internal QA misses, so hopefully it won't be long until the map is much more stable. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/04/22/call-of-duty-warzone-7-minutes-of-verdansk-84-gameplay-with-commentary"] If you were holding out hope of stepping back onto OG Verdansk, Raven has already stated that the original map is never coming back. As for what else Raven may want to address, players are calling for the original Gulag to be brought back to Warzone. Russian Man ‘Trapped’ on Chinese TV Show for 3 Months Finally Gets to Go Home

A Russian man who was "trapped" on a Chinese reality TV show for nearly three months has finally been voted out by the viewing public. According to The Guardian, Vladislav Ivanov, a 27-year-old from Vladivostok, quickly realized that the devil works hard but the public works harder after he signed up to be a contestant on Produce Camp 2021, a Chinese boy group survival show, and almost instantly regretted his decision. He implored viewers to let him leave the show but instead, they supported him right the way through to the final. While most of the contestants sang for survival each week, hoping to make it into the 11-member international boy group left standing at the end of the series, Ivanov was crooning to be cut loose, having originally joined the show as a Chinese translator before being persuaded by directors to shoot for stardom. "They asked if I'd like to try a new life," Ivanov reportedly revealed during the series. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/04/01/the-biggest-streaming-movie-and-tv-releases-of-april-2021"] "Becoming a member of a boy band is not my dream as I can't sing and dance," Ivanov, who performed under the stage name Lelush, stated clearly to viewers after he reluctantly accepted a place on the show, according to SCMP. "I hope the judges won't support me. While the others want to get an A, I want to get an F as it stands for freedom." Ivanov was unable to quit due to the contractual agreement that he had signed, so he put as little effort as possible into his performances but this backfired in the most spectacular way, as viewers were seemingly attracted to his anti-hero persona, keeping him in the show week after week. The unaspiring singer spent three months on the show before being voted out during the grand finale. With his refound freedom, Ivanov posted on the Chinese social media site Weibo, expressing his relief at the fact that he was "finally getting off work." A hashtag related to his exit was apparently viewed more than 180 million times and reposted more than 59,000 times, including by the Russian embassy, who congratulated Ivanov on his departure from the series and told him to "have a good rest." No, The League of Legends Fighting Game Won’t Reward You With NFTs

Riot has denied rumours that Project L, the League of Legends fighting game, would let players "earn and battle" with NFTs. As posted on Reddit, the rumour began circulating after a Discord user posted images that appeared to show a website for Project L, which included the text: "Project L is a platform fighting game that shows the champions of Runeterra in a new light. Earn and battle with NFTs as digital items while progressing through the seasonal reward tracks." A Twitter account seemingly linked to the leak began teasing a reveal of the game for May 5, but the video attached to that announcement has been clipped from a different League of Legends spin-off, Legends of Runeterra. After the rumour spread, Riot's corporate communications director Joe Hixson moved to debunk the idea, saying, "the Project L 'leaks' going around are very, very fake." As Hixson points out, the hoax seems to have been achieved by manually editing the Riot website to add existing images of Project L and the fake text. As it stands, we know about as little about Project L as we did before, with an initial 2019 announcnement saying that it's a fighting game set in the League of Legends universe, and was in the early stages of development. NFTs (non-fungible tokens, a means of authenticating a unique digital file) have become a major, controversial topic in recent months, with a craze for buying them leading to digital artist Beeple selling a JPG for $69 million. However, there are concerns over the environmental impact of NFT upkeep, which has led to a backlash. Some games have begun adopting the approach already, such as Blankos Block Party, which recently announced an NFT marketplace within the game. Street Fighter Legend Yoshinoro Ono Becomes President of Another Games Studio

Legendary Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono has joined another game studio as president and COO. Ono departed Capcom in Summer 2020 after nearly 30 years of work at the company and has now has been appointed as president and COO of Delightworks. Delightworks will publish the upcoming fighting game Melty Blood: Type Lumina, but is perhaps most well-known for the studio's mobile tactical RPG Fate/Grand Order. Fate/Grand Order revealed it had managed to amass 32 million players in February 2020. Ono announced on Twitter that he would join the company on May 1, and added that he may be absent from the fighting game community for some time. "There may be some distance between me and everyone at FGC for a while," he wrote. "I may be away from the FGC for a while, but I’m looking forward to spending time with you again when I get the chance." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2016/02/15/street-fighter-5-review"] No specific plans have been announced, but Delightworks (via Google Translate) says that Ono has been brought in to "manage the company from a more multifaceted perspective." With Delightworks currently best known for mobile games, it may be that it wants to branch out with Ono at the helm. Ono started at Capcom in 1998 and worked as a Sound Manager on Street Fighter Alpha 3. He most recently served as an Executive Producer on Street Fighter V and Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challenges. Beyond the Street Fighter series, Ono has also worked on Devil May Cry, Dino Crisis 2 and Dead Rising. In that time, he became beloved of the Street Fighter and wider fighting game communities for his ebulliant personality, communicative approach, and his tendency to bring an action figure of Blanka wherever he went. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/08/02/street-fighter-producer-yoshinori-ono-explains-his-blanka-obsession"] In other Street Fighter news, here's everything that was announced in the Street Fighter V spring update, including details about the game's next character Rose. Outside of the main series, a Street Fighter crossover was recently announced with Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid, which will bring Ryu and Chun-Li to the nWay fighting game as paid DLC. Super Mario Party Gets New Online Modes, Two Years After Release

Nintendo has released a free update for 2018's Super Mario Party, bringing more online play options to the game, more than two years after it came out. Previously, players could only enjoy Super Mario Party's Mario Party and Partner Party modes in offline co-op, but today's free update will modify the game so that players can host and play matches online. It's not entirely clear why the update has been added so long after release, but it's welcome news for those who, for fairly obvious reasons, might not be heading to their friends' houses right now. Those who own a Nintendo Switch Online subscription will be able to dig into the game's new online modes right away after downloading a free update. If you're unfamiliar, Mario Party is your standard four-player dice-rolling game board mode, whereas Partner Party is a special 2 vs. 2 version of the same format. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/04/27/super-mario-party-online-play-update-trailer"] The update's webpage notes that players will be able to host a public game or "set up a password for a private party," if they want to play against specific friends and family. At launch, Super Mario Party featured an 'Online Mariothon' mode which let players take part in a minigame roulette over the internet, and this will remain intact. You can check out our review of Super Mario Party here, which we scored a 7.3, calling it "the best Mario Party in two console generations." Leo Tipped for Mads’ Role in English Version of Oscar-Winning Danish Film

One day after taking home Oscar gold, a remake of the newly-crowned Best International Film winner Another Round is brewing in Hollywood. Deadline reports that a remake of the Danish film is being developed as a star vehicle for Leonardo DiCaprio. The remake rights were acquired at a two-week auction by DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson's Appian Way, Endeavor Content and Makeready. The production companies plan to hire a writer imminently. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/04/26/2021-oscar-winners-announced-ign-news"] If the project comes to fruition, DiCaprio will take on the role that Mads Mikkelsen played in the original film. Another Round stars Mikkelsen as a depressed middle-aged teacher who engages in a dicey experiment with three friends involving constantly raising their blood alcohol levels to improve their lives. Hollywood's excitement over the prospect of remaking Another Round is the latest example of the American entertainment industry's habit of developing English-language versions of awards-favorite foreign films. HBO is currently developing a series set within the universe of Bong Joon-ho's Parasite, last year's Best Foreign Film and Best Picture winner at the Oscars. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=igns-best-reviewed-movies-of-2020&captions=true"] DiCaprio hasn't acted in a film since his Oscar-nominated turn as fading movie star Rick Dalton in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He is set to reunite with Martin Scorsese on the director's upcoming western Killers of the Flower Moon, which began principal photography earlier this month. ‘All Roads Lead to FUT:’ Leaked FIFA Docs Stir Controversy, EA Responds

"We do not 'push' people to spend in our games," EA said in a new statement today, a forceful retort to internal documents leaked to the CBC that nevertheless appear to suggest the opposite. EA's comments were part of a lengthy multi-part statement published on its official site. They follow a CBC report published earlier this morning in which EA expresses the desire to "funnel" players toward its heavily monetized FIFA Ultimate Team mode, which it refers to as the game's "cornerstone." "Players will be actively messaged + incentivized to convert throughout the summer," a bullet on a leaked slide reads. Another headline put it more simply: "All roads lead to FUT." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/10/06/fifa-21-review"] The extensive report includes comments from gambling experts as well as an anonymous insider, who told CBC, "For years … they've been able to act with a layer of plausible deniability [...] Yet in their internal documents, they're saying, 'This is our goal. We want people driven to the card pack mode.'"

A Neverending Controversy

EA has insisted that FUT isn't gambling since at least 2018, even as countries have considered legislation against microtransactions and Belgium has banned them outright. FIFA is consistently one of the world's highest grossing franchises, but headlines are riddled with stories of players spending thousands of dollars trying to get a player. The card-collecting mode, in which players open packs to obtain real-world stars for their "ultimate team," was first introduced in 2009 as a downloadable add-on. It subsequently became one of EA's most consistent moneymakers, quickly becoming one of the single biggest drivers over FIFA's online culture. The FIFA calendar is now driven by events like "FUTmas," in which players are encouraged to obtain versions of stars like Arturo Vidal. But while popular, FIFA fans have complained that FUT has overtaken more traditional modes like Online Team Play and career mode. Reddit threads like this one are very common. A petition to "#FixCareerMode" garnered more than 8,000 signatures. FUT is also a notorious money sink compared to even other Ultimate Team modes. Players and influencers alike have consistently complained about worsening rewards from modes like Weekend League, where the reward for grinding through 30 games is typically a handful of packs and undesirable players. A popular Reddit thread showed the #1 Weekend League player in the world receiving almost nothing for his efforts. What's more, extremely low pack odds make it very difficult to obtain top-end players. The chances of obtaining an event player is frequently less than 1 percent.

'A Cornerstone'

The slides leaked to the CBC seemingly confirm what EA is rarely willing to say publicly — that all FIFA modes exist in service of driving engagement with FUT. While it doesn't necessarily rule out of the possibility of future improvements to career mode, which has been largely stagnant over the past generation, it does serve as a potential indicator of where EA's priorities lie. EA responded that "summer is a very active time in our FUT community," and that the development team is pushing out new content and community events. In the world of soccer, the Premier League is about a month away from ending, and the Champion's League have reached the semifinals. Late last week, EA released the Team of the Season promo, featuring high-powered versions of the season's best players. "Nothing in the leaked document contradicts this in any way – it shows how we are supporting engagement in our game during the summer period, not spending," EA said. It called the story "sensationalized" over the course of the lengthy statement, saying that the publisher "firmly disagree that FIFA or any of our games involve gambling." EA also referred to a recent case in which Google was granted a move to dismiss a lawsuit related to loot boxes on the Google Play Store. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-ign-fifa-game-review-ever&captions=true"] Nevertheless, the leaked slides reflect a number of troubling trends within FIFA. As fans have observed, event rewards are getting worse with each passing year, encouraging players to spend more to make up the deficit. Single-player story modes like The Journey have included multiple FUT tie-ins. FIFA Ultimate Team remains the largest part of FIFA's culture, and EA is seemingly fine with that. "FUT is the cornerstone and we are doing everything we can to drive players here," a leaked slide says. That is unlikely to change any time soon. We sent our own list of questions and a request for comment to EA, but the publisher responded by directing us to its official statement. FIFA 21 is currently available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Switch, and PC. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Kat Bailey is a Senior News Editor at IGN and an unlucky West Ham supporter.

Rocky Horror Played in an Empty Oregon Movie Theater for 54 Weeks Straight

With many movie theaters shuttered for the past year, new releases weren't the only absence from film culture. Event screenings of the 1975 musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show have been a worldwide phenomenon for decades. Portland's Clinton Street Theater has held Saturday night screenings of the cult film for 43 years straight, one of the longest running unbroken streaks of weekly Rocky Horror screenings in the world. Though the Clinton Street Theater was forced to close its doors in March 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Rocky Horror streak has continued apace. The tradition was maintained by Nathan Williams, who rolled out to the theater for 54 consecutive Saturdays to attend screenings by himself or with a friend. “I watched it alone. I watched it during the snowstorm,” Williams told OregonLive. “I was in a position to keep a flame burning, to keep a torch lit... I’m just a guy holding a torch for the city of Portland, for all the weirdos, for all the people who don’t have a safe place to call home, we’re home.” [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-delayed-movie-due-to-coronavirus-so-far&captions=true"] “It’s just kind of a silly little thing, but it was still a sense of hope,” theater owner Lani Jo Leigh said about Williams' mission. "This is what normal is. Normal is we play Rocky Horror on a Saturday night, and that’s what’s happening.” Williams attended his first screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Clinton Street Theater in 1999. The movie house is just one of many venues across the country that regularly shows The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Screenings are usually raucous events, with audience participation encouraged and a shadow cast of cabaret members acting out the film's story alongside the projected image. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-25-best-horror-movies&captions=true"] With movie theaters now returning across the United States, the Clinton Street Theater was able to reopen on April 3. The 222-seat theater was filled with 50 filmgoers — the largest audience currently permitted under Oregon's COVID-19 restrictions — for a 9 p.m. screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The American box office has entered its regrowth stage as COVID-19 restrictions are gradually lifted across the country. Over the weekend, Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train earned $19.5 million, garnering the biggest debut for a foreign language film in U.S. history. Warner Bros.' Mortal Kombat reboot ruled the weekend with a $22.5 million gross. [poilib element="accentDivider"] J. Kim Murphy is a freelance entertainment writer.

Climate Change Has Shifted Earth’s Axis, Scientists Explain in New Study

The reason for a 1990s shift in Earth's axis is climate change, according to a new study. More specifically, the melting of glaciers that's occurred as a result of global warming is the cause of a shift in the Earth's axis that happened in the 1990s. This shift saw the Earth's pole, which is the point where the Earth's rotational axis intersects its crust in the Northern Hemisphere, drift in a "new eastward direction," according to the study, published as part of the American Geophysical Union's geophysical research letters. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=gorgeous-photos-of-earth-from-space&captions=true"] To determine how this might have happened, scientists observed two possible theories and their outcomes in relation to the Earth's axis. "One scenario assumes that the terrestrial water storage change throughout the entire study period (1981-2020) is similar to that observed recently (2002-2020)," the study reads. "The second scenario assumes that it changed from observed glacier ice melting." According to the study, only the second scenario, along with the atmosphere, oceans, and solid Earth, "agrees with the polar motion during the period of 1981-2020." This new finding, which posits that "the accelerated terrestrial water storage decline resulting from the glacial ice melting is thus the main driver of the rapid polar drift toward the east after the 1990s," indicates that a close relationship between the movement of Earth's poles and climate change exists. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=google-earth-timelapse-1985-vs-2020&captions=true"] According to SciTechDaily, the direction of polar drift shifted from southbound to eastbound in 1995, and from 1995 to 2020, the average speed of the polar drift, "increased about 17 times the average speed recorded from 1981 to 1995." To check their theory, the scientists in the study calculated how water stored on land, i.e. glaciers, changed, according to SciTechDaily. The team found that the "contributions of water loss from the polar regions is the main driver of polar drift, with contributions from water loss in non polar regions." While the team says the planet's axis shift won't affect standard life on Earth – it might have only changed the length of a day by milliseconds, according to SciTechDaily – this study still demonstrates that mass change, in this case glacial, is happening on a scale large enough that the Earth's axis can shift as a result. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/04/07/scientists-may-have-observed-a-particle-breaking-the-laws-of-physics"] "I think it brings an interesting piece of evidence to this question," University of Zurich climate scientist, Vincent Humphrey, told SciTechDaily. "It tells you how strong this mass change is – it's so big that it can change the axis of the Earth." For more about climate change and its effect on Earth, check out this story about a Google Earth update that lets you see how climate change has drastically altered the planet.
