Oscars 2021 Nominations Spotlight: Chloe Zhao, Steven Yeun, and More Make History

The Oscar nominations for the 93rd annual Academy Awards have been announced, and with it comes a list of historic nods. Actor-producer Priyanka Chopra Jonas and singer, songwriter, and actor Nick Jonas revealed the Oscar nominations in all 23 Academy Award categories during a two-part live presentation on Monday, March 15. David Fincher's Mank led the nominations with 10 nods overall, including Best Director. In the same category, Chloé Zhao and Emerald Fennell made history for women at the Oscars. Zhao and Fennell were amongst several names to land historic Oscar nominations this year, with Steven Yeun, Riz Ahmed, and Viola Davis also getting a mention in the handful of historical firsts that were featured in this year's nominations from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Want to know more? Read on for a roundup of all the historical nominations from this year's presentation! First Two Women to Be Nominated for Best Director in the Same Year

For the first time in its 93-year history, the Academy honored more than one woman in the Best Director category in the same year. Nomadland's Chloé Zhao and Promising Young Woman's Emerald Fennell became the sixth and seventh women to ever appear in the category, following nods for Lina Wertmüller, Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola, Kathryn Bigelow, and Greta Gerwig in previous years. While five women preceded them in the historical nominations for Best Director, no two women have ever been featured in the category at the same time. Zhao and Fennell will compete for the award against David Fincher (Mank), Thomas Vinterberg (Another Round), and Lee Isaac Chung (Minari). Signficantly, three female directors earned nominations for Best Director at the Golden Globes this year.

First Asian-American Woman to Be Nominated for Best Director

Zhao also made history as the first woman of Asian descent to be nominated for Best Director. She is the fifth Asian Best Director nominee in Oscars history overall, with Hiroshi Teshigahara, Akira Kurosawa, Ang Lee, and Bong Joon-ho all having competed in the category previously. Zhao made history at the 78th Golden Globes as the first Asian woman and second woman ever to win Best Director.

First Woman to Receive Four Nominations in a Single Year

Zhao smashed another record as the first woman to receive four Oscar nominations in a single year, having earned individual nods for producing, directing, writing, and editing Nomadland. Before this year, three Oscar nominations was the maximum received by a female in a single year, and only four women had ever achieved this: Edith Head, Marilyn Bergman, Sofia Coppola, and Fran Walsh. First Asian-American Actor to Be Nominated for Best Actor

Steven Yeun became the first Asian-American actor to receive a Best Actor nod at the Oscars. He received recognition for his acclaimed role in Lee Isaac Chung's Minari, which picked up several other nominations. In the movie, Yeun plays Jacob Yi, a Korean father who uproots his family to a rural part of Arkansas in the 1980s in the hopes of building a farm from the ground up.

First Muslim Actor to Be Nominated for Best Actor

In the same category, Riz Ahmed became the first Muslim to be nominated for a leading role at the Academy Awards. The actor, who is British of Pakistani descent, scored an Oscar nomination for his role as Ruben in Darius Marder's Sound of Metal. In the movie, Ahmed portrays a heavy metal drummer whose life is thrown into freefall when he discovers that he is losing his hearing.

Most-Nominated Black Actress in Oscars History

Viola Davis received her fourth career-acting nomination at the 93rd Academy Awards, making her the most nominated Black actress in Oscars history. This year, Davis earned a spot in the Best Actress category for her performance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. She previously landed Best Supporting Actress nominations for 2008's Doubt and 2016's Fences, as well as Best Actress for 2011's The Help. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=igns-best-reviewed-movies-of-2020&captions=true"] Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the ceremony for the 93rd Academy Awards had to be postponed by two months, shifting from February 28, 2021 to April 25, 2021, which is the latest date in the Academy's history. The virtual ceremony will be broadcast on ABC starting at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET. Stay tuned to IGN for full coverage of the awards. PlayStation Communities on PS4 Shutting Down in April

Sony is preparing to shut down its PlayStation Communities feature on Playstation 4 next month, in seemingly one of the first moves by the company to gradually drop support for its older console. In a note on the PlayStation Support page, Sony says that PS Communities will no longer be supported beginning April 2021, though messaging and other features will still be available through the PlayStation App. PS Communities is a feature that lets PS4 users create or join groups based on interests. The groups are able to play games together or discuss their interests via message boards on the system. The feature was launched in 2015, and had already had its winding down signaled last year with the ability to create private communities removed -- though public communities were still open. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/06/playstation-5-review"] With the launch of the PlayStation 5 last year, it makes sense that eventually, Sony will slowly begin to withdraw support for different PS4 features -- though given how many PS4 units are out there, it's likely that the process of the PS4's wind-down will be a slow one. For comparison, the largely unsuccessful Wii U only just lost its Netflix support earlier this year, despite the Switch celebrating its four-year anniversary a few weeks ago. So don't expect to lose the console's more meaningful features anytime soon. All that said, this may also be more of a move to get rid of Communities entirely, as there is no equivalent feature available on PS5 at this time. Outriders Is Coming to Xbox Game Pass at Launch [Updated]

Update 03/15/2021: Xbox has confirmed that Outriders will join Xbox Game Pass for console (and Android devices via Xbox Cloud Gaming) on its launch day. It doesn't appear to be coming to Game Pass for PC, however. After teasing an announcement over the weekend, Xbox confirmed that the game would come for Xbox Game Pass for Console, and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on its April 1 launch day. "Starting April 1 (not an April Fool’s joke, I assure you)," reads the announcement, "Xbox Game Pass for Console and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members can jump into this true genre-hybrid from Square Enix, which combines brutal combat with deep RPG systems." It's another high-profile addition to Game Pass, after Xbox added 20 Bethesda games to the service, 5 of which benefit from Xbox Series X's FPS Boost feature. [poilib element="accentDivider"] A new tease may be hinting that Square Enix's Outriders may soon be coming to Xbox Game Pass. As it is known to do, Xbox Game Pass on Twitter shared a joke e-mail from Melissa McGamepass, the Executive Senior VP Lieutenant of General Video Game Communications, who confirmed a new game is on its way to the service. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/03/02/outriders-review-in-progress-demo-impressions"] Alongside stating that this new game is "completely unrelated" to other previous announcements like the 20 Bethesda games that recently joined Xbox Game Pass, the e-mail's ending seems to all but confirm Outriders is the game in question. "Before I go, I did have something I wanted to ask," McGamepass wrote. "Has anyone else noticed a mysterious signal appearing in the distance lately or am I the anomaly in the situation?" Since its reveal at E3 2019, Outriders has made clear that players will be setting out across the ruined world of Enoch in search of the source of a mysterious signal. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=outriders-ign-first&captions=true"] Furthermore, those who have tried the lengthy Outriders Demo (which is available for free now!) will know that one of the main missions has players escaping an anomaly. The timing of this McGamepass e-mail is also of note as it arrives only a few days before Square Enix's Digital Showcase on March 18 that will include announcements for Outriders. Outriders is set to be released on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia on April 1, 2021. For more, check out our Outriders demo impressions and 10 tips and tricks to make the most out of the demo. Fall Guys Getting Among Us Costumes With Mysterious, ‘Unique’ Features

Fall Guys has announced an Among Us crossover, and developer Mediatonic teased to IGN that some new Among Us costumes will have "something unique" about them, adding that the mention of an Impostor in a new trailer could be considered a warning to players. Included at the end of a new trailer was the reveal of a red Among Us-themed spacesuit costume (complete with a fried egg hat), and the warning that 1 Impostor Remained – text that will be very familiar to Among Us players. Developer Mediatonic tells IGN that the red costume will be available on Day 1 of Season 4, and will be a part of the season's Fame Path rather than bought with Crowns – the bottom half at rank 21, and the top half at rank 26. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/03/15/fall-guys-season-4-official-trailer"] However, the developer also teased to us that this wasn't the only Among Us costume, and that they'll come with secrets and quirks for players to discover when they arrive. Coupled with the tease that the Impostor warning could be more than a trailer joke, and it raises the idea that the costumes will add Among Us-themed features. Perhaps players could be given extra tasks, perhaps to eliminate others in their games? Fall Guys costumes have always been strictly cosmetic, so any extras will likely not affect the games themselves, so it'll be interesting to see what Mediatonic and Innersloth have up their sleeves. Fall Guys and Among Us are a natural fit, with both games emerging last year as major gaming phenomena. Other Fall Guys crossovers have included Doom, Cuphead, Godzilla, and more. Check out our Fall Guys wiki for tips on how to claim those crowns. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Joe Skrebels is IGN's Executive Editor of News. Follow him on Twitter. Have a tip for us? Nintendo Reportedly Expecting Another Record Year for Software, With a Series of Major Games

Nintendo is reportedly expecting to ship 250 million units of software in its next fiscal year – comfortably beating its existing all-time records – thanks to a line-up of (mostly unconfirmed) blockbuster games. Per anonymous sources of Bloomberg, Nintendo has briefed some partners and suppliers on its expectations for April 2021 to March 2022, and set expectations of shipping 250 million games. That huge number is seemingly driven by what Bloomberg calls "a series of marquee game releases", and what analyst Serkan Toto calls "a much stronger blockbuster software lineup and new hardware". Nintendo is already forecasting a record year for sales in its current financial year (ending March 2021), expecting to see 205 million shipped units. Its previous best year came in financial year 2008, when the huge popularity of the Wii saw 204.6 million units shipped. Financial year 2020 was unexpectedly huge for Nintendo, with the upswing in gaming due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the enormous success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, propelling the company to its current success. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/new-nintendo-switch-with-bigger-screen-4k-output-on-the-way-ign-news"] 250 million units is a frankly enormous increase on that new record and, if legitimate, represents huge confidence from Nintendo in its upcoming games. New Pokemon Snap, Mario Golf: Super Rush, and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD will all drop in that period, which could represent high-sellers, and a large proportion of Monster Hunter Rise's sales will also likely come in the next financial year. We could also reasonably expect the release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 and Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl in that window. Looking further, Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Bayonetta 3, Metroid Prime 4 and Splatoon 3 could also drop in that period. However, none of the above includes follow-ups to Switch's biggest three games so far – Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, or Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. While we can expect some additions to Nintendo's line-up of games, these mooted numbers could point to some major unannounced games coming down the line. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=all-2021-games-with-confirmed-release-dates&captions=true"] The company also seemingly expects to see further growth in its console space after Switch saw incredible sale success across the world in 2020, and an apparent planned new model of Switch, with a larger, OLED screen could help keep that momentum up. Back catalog games sales for new Switch owners could help push the company towards that 250 million unit goal. Nintendo hasn't officially commented on the 250 million unit figure, and we likely won't hear mention of that until the company's next financial briefing on May 6. The company's games line-up was most recently added to in February's Nintendo Direct – here's everything announced in that show.
