Marvel’s Avengers: Spider-Man Being Developed, But Not Coming Before Black Panther
The Marvel's Avengers team is working on the promised PlayStation-exclusive Spider-Man character, but he won't be coming to the game before Summer 2021 at the earliest.
We spoke to Crystal Dynamics head of studio Scot Amos about the game's 2021 roadmap – which makes no mention of Spider-Man – and asked about when we might see the character appear. "I can tell you that, formally, officially, people are working on him right now," Amos replied. "So it is still on our roadmap for the future."
The roadmap (below) shows a number of additions, working from this month to Summer and 'Beyond'. That roadmap ends with the War for Wakanda expansion, and the addition of Black Panther to the game's roster – and Amos made clear that Spider-Man would not arrive before Black Panther.
[caption id="attachment_2488128" align="alignnone" width="1920"] Marvel's Avengers' 2021 roadmap. (Source: Square Enix)[/caption]
That roadmap does make clear that it doesn't include all in-progress work, but Amos said it represents what the studio can fully commit to in the near-term. "But there are people working on [him]," he reiterated, "and we still fully expect Spider-Man to come to PlayStation." Amos gave no indication of a timescale for that, however.
Marvel's Avengers' version of Spider-Man was first announced in August of 2020, and his exclusivity to PlayStation was the cause of some controversy. Since launch, Avengers has been criticised for a lack of meaningful new content, with new playable heroes a major part of those complaints.
Today sees the release of the game's second new hero, Hawkeye, alongside the Future Imperfect campaign, and next-gen versions of the game. Crystal Dynamics also told us that the game would not be going free-to-play anytime soon.

Marvel’s Avengers Isn’t Going Free-to-Play Anytime Soon
After a rocky launch that's caused fan upset and commercial issues, many have wondered whether Marvel's Avengers would pivot to a free-to-play model, in order to bring new players in – but developer Crystal Dynamics has rejected the idea.
In an interview about the game's 2021 roadmap, we asked Crystal Dynamics head of studio Scot Amos whether he had considered a free-to-play model – his answer was clear: "For us, the model we have is the model we stick with."
Amos repeatedly pointed to how the game's current model best serves its players by offering them all of its playable content for a single upfront cost. "Look, you buy in once, you get into our theme park, as it were, and look at all these rides you can take," he explained. "And all the rides are part of that, and we're continually adding more content at no additional cost." Amos added that the roadmap of new content should make that even more appealing.
[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/marvels-avengers-next-gen-capabilities-trailer"]
Amos also claimed that some players aren't understanding the full extent of the game's existing content: "There's something kind of interesting for us that, at the end of the campaign there's a mission called Reigning Supreme, and the number of people who've actually played it but they don't understand what it is, like, 'Oh this looks like a really long mission'. It is, because it unlocks all this other content.
"There's a bunch of people that we have been onboarding saying, 'No it's worth playing that because it shows you the Vaults, and Caches, and coordinates and all this other stuff that you just haven't seen yet.' So there's a massive amount of content in here already."
As for changes that are coming, the 2021 roadmap includes the addition of Black Panther, a Wakanda campaign, a Black Widow movie tie-in, and the ability to play multiple versions of the same character. It doesn't include the promised Spider-Man, who won't be coming before summer 2021 at the very earliest.
Today sees the release of the game's second new hero, Hawkeye, alongside the Future Imperfect campaign, and next-gen versions of the game. Make sure to check out everything announced and revealed at the Spring 2021 Square Enix Presents.

Project Hitman Sniper Assassins Announced for Mobile, Coming This Year
A new Hitman mobile game was announced at the Square Enix Presents Spring 2021 event entitled (for now) Project Hitman Sniper Assassins, but Agent 47 is nowhere to be found (possibly also for now).
In its debut teaser trailer, we learned that Project Hitman Sniper Assassins is a mobile game that has you controlling not a single agent, but what seems to be a team of assassins told to work together on their mission, referred to only as "426."
According to press release details, this is a "wholly new narrative" taking place in the Hitman universe. While its predecessor Hitman Sniper featured Agent 47, it seems he is not the focus of Project Hitman Sniper Assassins -- at least not immediately.
[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/03/18/hitman-sniper-assassins-reveal-trailer"]
So far, the only other thing we know about Project Hitman Sniper Assassins is that it's coming out for Android and iOS sometime in 2021, and that it's being developed by Square Enix Montreal -- the studio behind other hit Square Enix mobile games such as Hitman Sniper, Hitman Go, and Lara Croft Go.
Square Enix showed a number of other trailers and announcements today during its Square Enix Presents, including a new Outriders gameplay trailer, and the reveal of another mobile game, Just Cause Go.

It's been a big week for Outriders, first with its Game Pass launch day announcement, and now with a new gameplay trailer during the Spring 2021 Square Enix Presents.
In the trailer, we see almost six minutes of gameplay explaining the game's setting on the world of Enoch, where a group of colonizer humans is warded off upon arrival by the planet's deadly environment and monsters, gaining strange powers in the process. The trailer highlights Outriders' four customizable, respeccable classes: the time-manipulating Trickster, the distance-focused Technomancer, the tanky Devastator, and the medium-ranged, crowd-focused Pyromancer.
We also see snippets of the different biomes players can explore in Outriders, and get a bit of color on the game's sidequests, missions, and post-game content.
[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/03/18/outriders-6-minutes-walkthrough-trailer"]
There was also a new cinematic trailer to go with the gameplay today, highlighting the dangers of the world of Outriders and showing off some really wild monsters (look at the big tall ones!):
[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/03/18/outriders-cinematic-trailer"]
Outsiders is a cooperative third-person shooter made by the developers behind the Bulletstorm games (who also co-developers Gears of War 2 and 3). It's planned for launch on PC, PS4, PS5, Google Stadia, and Xbox One, Series X, and Series S via Game Pass on April 1, having originally been planned for launch in 2020 but getting delayed due to COVID-19. It had a demo earlier this month that seems to have gone pretty well, with our reviewer calling it "viscerally fun" and praising its decision to resemble a single-player RPG more closely than a shared-world looter shooter.

Star Wars: Hasbro Finally Made a Jaxxon Figure
The Star Wars Expanded Universe may be gone, but it's not completely forgotten. Hasbro has revealed a new lineup of Star Wars: The Black Series figures inspired by classic comic book storylines like Dark Empire and Heir to the Empire. There's even a Jaxxon figure.
Officially dubbed "Star Wars: The Black Series Publishing Figures," this new line is part of Hasbro's larger promotion celebrating the 50th anniversary of Lucasfilm Ltd. The series includes Luke Skywalker from Heir to the Empire, Carnor Jax from Crimson Empire, a shirtless "Sith Apprentice" Darth Maul and Jaxxon from the original Marvel Comics Star Wars series. Check out the slideshow gallery below to get a closer look at all four figures:
[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=star-wars-the-black-series-publishing-figures-revealed&captions=true"]
Each of these four figures is priced at $24.99 and is slated for a Spring 2021 release. They're available to preorder through Hasbro Pulse and various other retailers.
While not the first Expanded Universe characters to get new toys recently (Funko previously tackled Knights of the Old Republic villains Darth Revan and Darth Nihilus), this is the first time in many years we've seen Hasbro devote an entire wave of figures to the EU. Is this a sign of bigger things to come for this now-defunct Star Wars continuity? Let us know in the comments what other EU fan-favorites you'd like to see turned into Star Wars: The Black Series figures.
For more on this classic Star Wars continuity, check out IGN's deep dive into how the Expanded Universe was born, and see why we think it's time Disney started telling new stories set in this "Legends" continuity.
