Assassin’s Creed Narrative Director Leaves Ubisoft After 10 Years

Darby McDevitt, the lead writer on Assassin's Creed games like Valhalla, Black Flag, Revelations, and more, has announced that he is leaving Ubisoft after 10 years. McDevitt announced the news on his personal Twitter account. McDevitt hasn't shared plans about his future other than he has "decided to set forth on a new adventure." McDevitt is primarily known for his extensive credits on the Assassin's Creed franchise. He served as a scriptwriter on mobile Assassin's Creed games like Discovery on the DS and Bloodlines on the PSP and is credited as Lead Writer on the canceled 3DS game Assassin's Creed: Lost Legacy, as well. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-ign-assassins-creed-review&captions=true"] He eventually got credits as lead writer on Assassin's Creed Revelations and Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, as well as co-writer on Assassin's Creed: Unity. His final credit on the series is as Narrative Director on Assassin's Creed: Valhalla. While video games are a collaborative effort, McDevitt has some big credits to his name and games like Black Flag and Valhalla are two of the more popular games across the franchise. "A special thanks to all the fans & content creators that have supported & expanded on our work over the years," McDevitt writes. "Thank you for your kind attention! You have my deepest respect & admiration. It has been the honor of a lifetime to get to know so many of you." There's no word yet on the future of the Assassin's Creed series, but Netflix and Ubisoft have announced a new Assassin's Creed anime from the producers of the Castlevania animated series. New Transformers Movie Coming from DC Blue Beetle Director

Paramount continues to double-down on its Autobots business. Angel Manuel Soto, the director of last year's teen drama Charm City Kings, is set to direct a new standalone Transformers film, per The Hollywood Reporter. Marco Ramirez is attached to write the script. While plot details are being kept under wraps, the project is being developed outside of the universe established by previous mainline Transformers movies. The story will not connect to Michael Bay's five movies or the Travis Knight's 2018 spin-off Bumblebee. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/06/27/the-transformers-movie-timeline-in-chronological-order"] This marks another premiere project for Soto, a rising talent in Hollywood. Last month, it was reported that the director would helm DC's Blue Beetle movie. Production on the superhero film is set to begin in the fall. Like Soto, Ramirez has also worked on comic book adaptations, having written for Netflix's Daredevil and served as co-creator and co-showrunner on the streamer's culmination team-up series The Defenders. He also developed The Twilight Zone reboot with Simon Kinberg and Jordan Peele. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-live-action-transformer&captions=true"] Soto's film is the latest development in Paramount's commitment to positioning Transformers as one of the studio's flagship properties. Paramount and Hasbro's eOne are already developing another Transformers movie that will serve as the seventh entry in the franchise's mainline series. Creed II director Stephen Caple Jr. will helm the project, which is scheduled to release on June 24, 2022. An animated prequel to Michael Bay's films set on Cybertron is also in the works with Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley attached. Additionally, Nickelodeon and eOne are developing a new Transformers animated series, which will consist of 26 half-hour episodes. Loop Hero Review

For all its automated systems, Loop Hero can be incredibly stressful. Battles play out without any input from you, navigation loops over a predetermined path, and resources are collected for you, but that doesn't mean you can take your eyes off the battlefield for even a second. This captivating mix of familiar genres demands constant attention, testing your ability to think well into the future when making your moves. It's a riveting balance of risk and reward wrapped in a deviously challenging roguelite that will tempt you into pushing forward for just one more round.

Loop Hero is a distinct mish-mash of multiple genre ideas, none of which influence gameplay enough to easily classify the overall gameplay experience. Loop Hero is primarily a run-based role-playing game in which you indirectly control a hero through procedurally generated loops. Instead of controlling the hero's movements, you mainly control what they encounter by placing objects on the loop that create the world--things like cemeteries that can spawn skeletons, villages that can heal you, or swamps that generate nasty mosquitos. These are provided by cards that you draw from a limited deck which you can edit between runs, letting you curate each one to a degree. And while your hero automatically navigates in circles and resolves fights with enemies without any inputs, you also manage their inventory carefully to deal with the increasing challenges that each new round trip brings.

Instead of controlling the hero's movements in Loop Hero, you control what they encounter on the loop.
Instead of controlling the hero's movements in Loop Hero, you control what they encounter on the loop.

Ultimately, Loop Hero challenges you to balance risk and reward by keenly considering all the options your current cards give you to make your next loop challenging, but not deadly. Each run is an opportunity to gather resources you use to expand your camp in the hub world, unlocking new cards, classes, and abilities to use on subsequent runs. Enemies drop specific resources that you'll need to further progress outside of each expedition, giving you incentives to place multiple groves for wild, mutated dogs or dimly lit houses that can spawn bloodthirsty vampires on tiles around them. With each new addition to the loop, you're also extending the time it takes to make a trip around it, which directly affects spawn rates of enemies that are tied to a persistent day-night cycle. While a tile might seem harmless when it's only adding one enemy to the loop every day, it can become dangerous when the route is stuffed to the point where an entire group might be waiting the next time you make it around again.
