Green Arrow and the Canaries Spinoff Not Happening

Even as The CW continues to add new shows to its Arrowverse lineup, one potential spinoff series won't be moving forward at the network. Variety reports Green Arrow and the Canaries is now "officially dead." The news isn't necessarily surprising, given the lack of updates surrounding the Arrow spinoff. Green Arrow and the Canaries was first announced back in September 2019, as Arrow was beginning its eighth and final season. The penultimate episode of Arrow served as a backdoor pilot for the spinoff, which would have featured Mia Queen (Katherine McNamara), Dinah Drake (Juliana Harkavy) and Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) defending Star City 20 years in the future. But since Arrow's finale, there's been little word on Green Arrow and the Canaries, even as The CW fast-tracked the first season of Superman & Lois and announced new superhero series like Wonder Girl and Naomi. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=arrows-best-episodes&captions=true"] In IGN's review of the backdoor pilot, we wrote, "As an epilogue to Crisis on Infinite Earths, 'Green Arrow and the Canaries' mostly hits the mark. It explores the ramifications of Crisis in an unexpected way, using that to flesh out the relationship between Mia Queen and John Diggle, Jr. and establish a shared new status quo for both Laurel Lance and Dinah Drake. What this episode fails to do, however, is justify building an entirely new series around the new plot threads introduced here. The new Arrow is shaping up to be a little too much like the old. That's not a recipe for success." It remains to be seen whether the futuristic plot threads introduced in that episode will be continued in another form, or if McNamara, Harkavy or Cassidy will reprise their roles elsewhere in the Arrowverse. Given the fact that DC's Legends of Tomorrow revolves heavily around time travel, that series could easily tie up the remaining loose ends from Arrow. Or there's always the possibility of Green Arrow and the Canaries being reworked to become an animated web series, similar to CW Seed's Vixen and Freedom Fighters: The Ray. The CW's decision to shutter Green Arrow and the Canaries comes on the heels of news that Supergirl will end with the upcoming Season 6 and Black Lightning will end after Season 4. However, with Superman & Lois premiering in February 2021, Stargirl migrating from DC Universe in Season 2, the announcements of the aforementioned Wonder Girl and Naomi and rumors of a Black Lightning spinoff focused on Painkiller, the Arrowverse doesn't look to be getting any smaller in the years to come. UK Comic-Cons Aiming to Hold Physical Events in 2021

Convention and event organizer ReedPop has announced it will resume some physical events in 2021 in London and Birmingham.

ReedPop says that “provided it can be done safely,” MCM Comic Con will return to London on October 22-24. MCM Birmingham will run from November 13-14. A series of “virtual Metaverse events” will be held throughout the spring and summer.

MCM Comic Con London and Birmingham will be the only physical events held throughout 2021, ReedPop said in a statement. MCM will not host its March event in Birmingham, nor a May event in London. Manchester and Scotland events are also not part of ReedPop’s calendar through 2021.

[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=2021-movies-preview&captions=true"]

Tickets will become available online “in the coming months” prior to each event, along with additional information on each show’s health and safety measures.

In the meantime, eager UK and EU fans will be able to access ReedPop’s spring Metaverse and virtual events throughout the summer. ReedPop says its virtual experiences will provide “a 365-day celebration of all things pop culture,” and will offer exclusive content, merch, and celebrity interactions.

"We want to thank our fans for waiting patiently during this challenging and unprecedented time while we focus on bringing them the best pop culture events in the UK in a safe, responsible and fun way,” said Teresa Heitor, MCM Comic Con event director at ReedPop. “The enjoyment and wellbeing of our attendees, guests and community remains our top priority. We can’t wait to gather with you all again and until then, our team remains hard at work to continue creating events with the superior quality content and show experiences that we know our fans expect.”

With the vast majority of 2020 events having been canceled due to COVID-19 safety concerns, convention goers are likely eager to return to physical events. With the UK beginning to roll out the Pfizer vaccine, it’s possible that regional and national government bodies may rescind certain COVID-19 restrictions.

ReedPop is also responsible for New York Comic Con, C2E2, PAX, Star Wars Celebration, Crunchyroll Expo, and numerous other events, although the company did not include any mentions of additional events in its statement.

The Iwata Asks Book Is Getting an English Language Release in April

A new book featuring words of wisdom from the late Nintendo President Satoru Iwata is getting an English language release later this year. The book, titled Ask Iwata, was originally released in Japan in 2019. The book, which is already up for pre-order, includes Iwata's thoughts on, "diverse subjects such as locating bottlenecks, how success breeds resistance to change, and why programmers should never say no." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2015/07/13/a-farewell-tribute-to-nintendos-satoru-iwata"] The book partially draws from the "Iwata Asks" series of conversations, where Iwata himself would conduct behind-the-scenes interviews with key members of Nintendo's development teams. You can still find the Iwata Asks pieces on Nintendo's website. The book also features conversations with Shigeru Miyamoto and EarthBound creator Shigesato Itoi. Last year, Miyamoto opened up about Iwata's passing, saying, "If there is some good-for-nothing idea I come up with over the weekend, I have no one to share it with the next Monday. That I can no longer hear him say ‘Oh, about that thing…’ is a bit of a problem for me. It makes me sad.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2015/07/17/thousands-flock-to-satoru-iwata-funeral-ign-news"] As for Itoi, Satoru Iwata helped him save the beloved classic EarthBound from development hell. Iwata famously told the EarthBound development team, "If we complete it by fixing what we have now, it will take two years. If it is OK to start again from scratch, it can be done in a half year.” Ask Iwata is coming to the U.S. on April 13 for $22.99, and April 15 in the U.K. for £18.99. Iwata died on July 11, 2015, at age 55, after a multi-year battle with a growth on his bile duct. Nintendo added a heartfelt tribute at the end of 2016's Star Fox Zero, which said, "This game is dedicated to our wingman who fell in battle." The Internet Goes Wild for a Pokemon Pillow Where You Put Your Head in Gengar’s Mouth

The Pokemon Company and P-Bandai have announced a new Gengar pillow that allows you to rest your head inside Gengar's mouth and people are very excited about it...for reasons. There's no judgment here though — everyone has those days where you just want to go home and curl up inside the head of the totally-sweet-and-not-at-all-scary Pokemon, Gengar. Thanks to The Pokemon Company and P-Bandai, that's now possible with their new Gengar pillow cushion for the price of 25,950 yen, or $249.54. The pillow sold out in just over an hour, as noted by Pokeshopper, but perhaps a second wave of pillows will be announced. Not only can you rest your head inside this Gengar's pillowy mouth, but you can use the cushion's 5 feet, 5 inches long tongue as a blanket to wrap yourself up in or lay on for additional comfort. As you might expect, the internet is going wild for this new pillow and there are already plenty of memes, jokes, and fears circulating social media. Here are just a few of IGN's favorites:   "Rumor has it that its gigantic mouth leads not into its body, filled with cursed energy, but instead directly into the afterlife," reads the Pokedex entry for Gengar in Pokemon Sword. So maybe reconsider before putting your head in. The Pokemon Shield entry says, "it lays traps, hoping to steal the lives of those it catches" and that "if you stand in front of its mouth, you'll hear your loved ones' voices calling out to you." If you're going to stick your head into this Gengar pillow's mouth, maybe consider not doing it alone. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-ign-pokemon-review-ever&captions=true"] This isn't the first time The Pokemon Company has created a very expensive Pokemon plush. Check out this IGN unboxing of a $500 life-sized Mareep plush. Be sure to check out these adorable Pokemon Sword and Shield plushies after that. Nvidia Releases Drivers to Fix Newly Discovered GPU Security Flaws

If you’ve got an Nvidia GPU, you probably want to download the latest update as soon as possible to avoid a security issue. Nvidia has released GPU driver that addresses security issues on Windows and Linux that may lead to denial of service, escalation of privileges, and information leaks, PC Gamer reports.

Nvidia users will want to download update version 461.09 on Windows or 460.32.03 on Linux. The most severe security threat involves a weakness found in the kernel mode layer handler for DxgkDdiEscape.

On the official CVSS scale for tech vulnerabilities, that security issue rates a hefty 8.4 out of 10, meaning it’s a “high” threat to your PC.

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/16/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3080-founders-edition-review"]

All that said, one bright note is that the vulnerability in question requires the perpetrator to access your hardware locally, significantly lowering the risk.

Nvidia notes that other vulnerabilities with virtual desktops (a 7.8 rating that also requires a local access) have been addressed in the update.

Other issues the update addresses include:

  • FPS counter appearing over Windows Mail and Calendar apps.

  • GeForce GTX 750 Ti: Blue screen crash

  • GeForce GTX 1080 Ti: Desktop screen flickering, system freezing

  • Enabling HDR causing black levels to be incorrect

Ultimately, don’t worry too much if you’re on a secure network, but still make sure to update your drivers sooner rather than later to avoid serious repercussions.

Don't forget to check out our review of the world's most difficult-to-find GPU, the GeForce RTX 3080.

Twitch Will Randomly Choose a New ‘PogChamp’ Emote Every 24 Hours

As Twitch tries to find a replacement for the incredibly popular ‘PogChamp’ emote, which was removed earlier this week, the streaming platform announced a novel temporary solution: every 24 hours, Twitch will randomly choose a new streamer emote to serve as a temporary ‘PogChamp’ emote. 'PogChamp' is one of the more popular emotes on Twitch and the original emote was based on fighting game player Ryan “Gootecks” Gutierrez. Twitch removed it earlier this week following a Tweet by Gutierrez that Twitch says called for further violence following the attack on Capitol Hill. Twitch also disabled Trump's Twitch channel following the insurgency. Sean Plott, the esports commentator known as Day9, suggested that Twitch should create a database of streamers, and whenever someone types ‘PogChamp’ Twitch should display one of those faces at random. Twitch seemed to agree with the idea Tweeting, “You know what? In the spirit of figuring out 2021 together, let’s just roll with it for now!” The company added, “Get ready for a new PogChamp every 24 hours, starting today.” In the days following the removal of Gooteck’s ‘PogChamp’ emote, prominent streamers have submitted ideas for replacements. Some have suggested their own faces for the next emote, while others have suggested third-party reaction images such as Nic Cage’s face, for example. The ‘PogChamp’ emote was often used during moments of incredible excitement, usually during fighting games, but it has spilled over into wider Twitch culture. Twitch says it’s now looking to replace the emote with another that can be used similarly during moments of “hype,” as the company says. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/01/07/twitch-removes-pogchamp-emote-following-tweets-by-gooteks-ign-news"] A new global PogChamp emote for today has already been chosen, but it will change again in 24 hours. Twitch has not specified how long this randomized ‘PogChamp’ emote trend will continue, or when a permanent replacement will be announced. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Matt T.M.
