LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special Review

The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special is now streaming on Disney+. [poilib element="accentDivider"] For those looking for a sweet, off-kilter addendum to the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy -- one that will most assuredly leave you with a bigger smile than The Rise of Skywalker did (if it left you with a smile at all) -- the new LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special is a charming and calamitous cross-time caper that blends all three trilogies together like never before. Using the original (cult car-crash-you-can't-look-away-from) 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special for inspiration, the LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special takes place after the demise of the First Order, post-Rise of Skywalker, and reunites Rey, Finn, Poe, and Rose for a celebration of Life Day on Kashyyyk. Those familiar with the original special will delight (maybe?) at the return of Itchy, Malla, and Lumpy while those who've been to Galaxy's Edge at a Disney theme park might appreciate the multiple Fried Endorian Tip-Yip references. Yes, this special is designed to cater to all levels of Stars Wars fandom, and all eras of Star Wars cinema. For all of its flaws, The Rise of Skywalker did give fans the first adventure featuring Rey, Finn, and Poe as a crusading trio instead of keeping them mostly separate throughout the movie. It was odd to wait to do that until the very end of the saga, but it was still a great thing to have happen before it was all over. The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special sort of revisits this and builds on it, giving us more time with these characters as true friends -- albeit a very silly time. Again, this is a comedic, winking, even self-deprecating take on the Skywalker Saga but it still, in a strange way, wraps things up better than you'd ever anticipate. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/05/lego-star-wars-holiday-special-official-trailer"] As Rey struggles to train Finn in the ways of the Force, Poe and company try to put together the perfect Life Day party. Rey's journey takes her to through time and space to search for secrets from past Jedi masters, bringing her through -- we'll just say -- the saga's greatest hits. From Hoth to Dagobah to Tatooine podracing to a young Obi-Wan complaining about trade disputes (and even a quick Mandalorian scene), Rey sort of "time heists" her way through all nine movies, creating a big, joyful swirl of Star Wars nuttiness full of meta-gags like Kylo Ren's shirtlessness, Jar Jar's senate speech, and an errant Greedo "Maclunkey!" And just like how the Avengers' time heist in Endgame unleashed a past Thanos, Rey inadvertently ropes Return of the Jedi's Emperor Palpatine into the journey and causes some fun friction between Kylo and his grandfather, Darth Vader. It's here that the special finds its true hilarity as the Dark Side, which is usually incredibly dour, is a great source for some laughs. We don't ever get to see someone like Palpatine cut loose outside of Robot Chicken. Here, voiced by Trevor Devall, the Emperor is quite the cut up. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=george-lucas-would-have-killed-luke-skywalker-and-other-weird-star-wars-facts&captions=true"] The majors stars of the Sequel Trilogy aren't around to provide voices in the way that, say, the original Star Wars Holiday Special had Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford on deck, but Kelly Marie Tran, Billy Dee Williams, and Anthony Daniels are in it as well as Star Wars: The Clone Wars vets Matt Lanter (Anakin Skywalker), Tom Kane (Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn), James Arnold Taylor (Obi-Wan Kenobi), and Dee Bradley Baker. Look, the LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special isn't ground-breaking, and it can be fairly corny a lot of the time, but it'll surprise you with how much it puts a nice pretty bow on top of the entire franchise. Ultimately, it's a better send-off in many ways than Episode IX. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=disney-spotlight-november-2020&captions=true"]

Assassin's Creed Valhalla had the biggest launch in series history, selling through more launch-week units than any other entry in the franchise before it. Ubisoft announced today, a week after the launch of Assassin's Creed Valhalla on Xbox One and Xbox Series S and Series X, that not only was this launch the biggest yet but that it had the biggest PC launch of all Ubisoft titles. This news comes hot on the heels of favorable reviews for the game across the board — IGN gave it an 8 out of 10 — so it's safe to say that Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a hit for Ubisoft. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/09/assassins-creed-valhalla-review"] "We are truly delighted by the enthusiastic response from our players and want to thank the fans for their incredible support," Assassin's Creed Valhalla producer, Julien Laferrière, said in a press release. "Delivering this game amid a global pandemic was a true tour de force by our teams and it's fantastic to see players enjoying the game so much." Laferrière said the game's launch is just the beginning for Assassin's Creed Valhalla and that the development team has robust content plans for the game's future that "will keep players immersed in their epic Viking saga for a long time to come." Ubisoft released some fun statistics alongside the news of the game's big launch as well. Over 3.5 million games of Orlog have been won and 1.8 million players have won at least one drinking game. Creed 2 Director May Helm New Transformers Movie

Creed 2 director Steven Caple Jr. is reportedly in talks to direct a new Transformers movie. The Hollywood Reporter says Caple is in talks to direct a script by King Arthur writer Joby Harold. The movie currently has a release date of June 24, 2022. Caple's Transformers movie is different from an animated Transformers movie that's supposedly in development and is expected to be a reboot of the live-action series previously directed by Michael Bay. Another live-action Transformers movie is in development at Paramount from writer James Vanderbilt, the writer of Murder Mystery. Vanderbilt's script is reportedly about the Transformers spinoff Beast Wars. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/26/beast-wars-transformers-we-were-wrong-about-you-up-at-noon"] The last Transformers movie released was the spinoff Bumblebee. It earned the best reviews of the series and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura took note of that for the future of the franchise, according to an interview with Collider in March 2019. "Several lessons have come out of [Bumblebee]," Di Bonaventura said. "One is that we have the freedom to tell almost any story. The other is that, how strongly the audience identified with the strength of character and emotion. I know the next Transformer, our attempt anyway, is to sort of do a fusion of Bumblebee and the Bay movies...a little more Bayhem. And a little bit more of the character falling in love within the emotional dynamic of the movie." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=dumbest-transformers-movie-moments&captions=true"] Harold is reportedly a writer on the Obi-Wan Kenobi series coming to Disney+ and is also developing a Space Mountain movie for Disney. As for the future of the Creed franchise, Michael B. Jordan is considering taking over as director. Instead of directing Transformers, Bay is now working on a smaller-scale thriller with Jake Gyllenhaal. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Petey Oneto is a freelance writer for IGN who thought Creed II was great.
