A Copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 Just Sold for a World Record-Setting $156,000

A sealed copy of NES' Super Mario Bros. 3 has sold for $156,000 USD and has set the world record for the highest price paid for a video game at auction. On November 20, Heritage Auctions sold a sealed copy of 1990's Super Mario Bros. 3 for $156,000 and surpassed the sale of NES' Super Mario Bros. from earlier this year that sold for $114,000 USD. Screenshot_2020-11-21 Super Mario Bros 3 - Wata 9 2 A+ Sealed [ Bros Left, First Lot #93032 Heritage Auctions The bidding for this rare copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 began at $62,000 USD, and 20 bidders fought for the chance to purchase it and, in doing so, also made this the world's first-ever million-dollar video-game auction. "While the condition of the game is remarkable, what makes this copy even more singular is the layout of the packaging itself: Exceedingly rare are sealed copies with the word "Bros." formatted to the left, covering one of Mario's signature white gloves," A press release from Heritage Auctions stated. "Collectors have spent years looking for such a version — the earliest in the Super Mario Bros. 3 production history – and usually come up empty-handed." This particular copy earned a grade of Wata 9.2 A+. In July, another variant of Super Mario Bros. 3 with a grade of Wata 9.0 A sold for $38,400 USD. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/01/14/super-mario-bros-3-world-record-speedrun"] Friday was also another big day for video games, as a sealed copy of the "Red Version" of 1998's Pokemon for Nintendo Game Boy - which was graded Wata 9.8 A++ - sold for $84,000 USD, making it the highest price ever paid for a Pokemon title. Furthermore, its final price was four times its pre-sale estimate. In 2019, we did a deep-dive into why an ultra-rare copy of NES' Super Mario Bros. sold for over $100,000, and why some earn these high prices. Speaking of high prices, a prototype of the Nintendo PlayStation console also sold for $360,000 USD at auction earlier this year, making 2020 a important and notable year for video game collectibles. Fortnite: Galactus Set to Arrive in Nexus War Finale Live Event

Fortnite's Chapter 2: Season 4 crossover will finally see Galactus arrive in a one-time only Nexus War finale live event on December 1, 2020, at 1pm PT/4pm ET/9pm GMT. No further details were given as to what players can expect from this event besides the Fortnite Team noting that "Galactus is closing in on the Island and the fate of all Reality lies in the balance." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/fortnite-x-marvel-season-4-nexus-war-update-explained"] To prepare for the event, it is recommended players download the latest update for Fortnite and log in at least 60 minutes prior to the start of the event. The event playlist should be up 30 minutes prior to the start time. The Fortnite team has said that it has "taken measures to ensure more people can attend the event," but it is still recommended that players arrive early. It is also mentioned that players will be able to take advantage of Fortnite's new integration with Housparty to video chat with friends in-game if you are playing on PC, PlayStation 4, or PlayStation 5. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=fortnite-marvel-crossover-screenshots&captions=true"] Fortnite's Marvel-themed season has seen such characters as Iron Man, Thor, Storm, Doctor Doom, She-Hulk, Mystique, Groot, and Wolverine be added to the game as skins, alongside other easter eggs, weapons, and more. Even though this live event is being built up to be a finale event for the Nexus War, Fortnite still has "many years of Marvel integration" planned beyond this current season. Director Confirms Predator Movie Plan, But Isn’t Happy It Leaked

UPDATE: Director Dan Trachtenberg has confirmed that he's working on a Predator movie, but isn't very happy that the news leaked. Trachtenberg took to Twitter to explain that his Predator project "was meant to be a surprise. Been working on this for almost 4 years now. I am very sad that what we had in store for how you could discover this movie will no longer happen. It’s a bummer. But also...YAY!" This has led some, including IGN's own Jesse Schedeen, to speculate that perhaps Trachtenberg's project was meant to be revealed as a Predator movie at the very end, not dissimilar to how the director's 10 Cloverfield Lane wasn't initially made as a Cloverfield sequel. Our original report follows. [poilib element="accentDivider"] A new Predator movie is reportedly in the works from Dan Trachtenberg, the director of 10 Cloverfield Lane. Deadline says the new movie won't include any of the plot elements from 2018's The Predator, which was received poorly by critics and audiences. Patrick Aison, a writer and producer on Jack Ryan and a consultant for Legion, is writing the script. John Davis will once again produce as he has done for the other four Predator movies. The movie will be released through Disney's 20th Century Studios. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/10-cloverfield-lane-live-qa-watch-along-w-director-dan-trachtenberg"] Dan Trachtenberg's feature-length directorial debut was 10 Cloverfield Lane, which was released in 2016. Since then, Trachtenberg directed an episode of Black Mirror and the pilot to The Boys. This new Predator movie will be Trachtenberg's second feature film. The franchise's previous entry, 2018's The Predator, was written and directed by Iron Man 3's Shane Black. It pulled in the highest box office gross for a single Predator movie with about $160 million. Only Aliens vs. Predator made more at the box office for the Predator franchise. Unfortunately, The Predator cost a hefty $88 million to make and likely millions more to market, according to The Numbers. IGN's The Predator review says the movie "splinters apart in the haphazard and shoddy-looking last half-hour, largely derailing what began as a promising entry in the wildly inconsistent franchise." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-10-best-80s-action-movies&captions=true"] There were apparently three different endings to The Predator, and one of which would've paid tribute to Aliens. Both Aliens and the original Predator made it onto IGN's list of the best '80s action movies. Anybody looking for more Predator content can check out the recently released video game Predator: Hunting Grounds, but might want to read IGN's review of the game first. Black Panther 2 to Film July 2021, Shuri May Have Larger Role

Marvel Studios is moving ahead with Black Panther 2 even as the studio has yet to decide what to do about the character of T'Challa in the wake of actor Chadwick Boseman's death earlier this year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Black Panther 2 begins filming in Atlanta in July 2021, with a shoot that could last up to six months under the direction of Ryan Coogler. "Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke and Angela Bassett are expected to return for the new feature, with some saying Wright’s character may take on a more prominent role," THR claims. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=marvel-phase-4-official-lineup&captions=true"] After Boseman died,  a vocal contingent of fans online has campaigned for Wright's character Shuri, the genius kid sister of T'Challa, to assume the duties of the Black Panther as she did in the Marvel comics. THR also reports that Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta (Narcos: Mexico, Sin Nombre) has been cast as one of the sequel's unspecified villains. [caption id="attachment_2442028" align="alignnone" width="720"]Tenoch Huerta in Narcos: Mexico. (Credit: Netflix) Tenoch Huerta in Narcos: Mexico. Which Marvel villain do you think Tenoch Huerta is playing? Let us know in the comments!

The Mandalorian: Eagle-Eyed Fans Catch On-Set Mistake in Latest Episode

The Mandalorian: Season 2, Episode 4, "The Siege" accidentally features a crew member in the background of a shot. As pointed out by a number of eagle-eyed fans, you can jump to 18:52 in the latest episode for a shot where Mando and his crew turn a corner and come in contact with enemies. In the background on the far left side, a crew member can be seen standing halfway behind the set with jeans, a green t-shirt, and what could be a watch or some sort of band on their wrist. That mistake is also captured in one of the official promo pics for the episode. [caption id="attachment_2441830" align="aligncenter" width="1662"]Lucasfilm introduces its most disgusting, horrifying creature to the Star Wars universe yet: a human from Earth. Lucasfilm introduces its most disgusting, horrifying creature to the Star Wars universe yet: a human from Earth.[/caption] This gaffe is already being compared to a similar incident in Game of Thrones: Season 8, when a Starbucks coffee cup was visible in a shot during an episode. The coffee cup was then digitally removed from the episode for future airings. The episode was directed by none other than legendary Hollywood actor Carl Weathers, who also plays Greef Karga in the series. Weathers has been celebrating the release of the episode all day on his Twitter page but hasn't commented on the error. Instead, he's thanking fans and declaring how grateful he is to direct an episode. "#TheMandalorin episode 12, 'The Siege' is a joyously #StarWars kind of ride," Weathers tweeted. "Yours truly is grateful to Jon Favreau for the opportunity to direct this offering! Thanks to all cast and to the amazing crew and to Disney." When a fan tweeted at Weathers saying he should direct a Star Wars movie, Weathers replied, "PREACH!" [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/10/26/the-mandalorian-season-2-episode-4-review"] This crew member isn't the only person to have a cameo in The Mandalorian lately. Star Wars: Battlefront II actress Janina Gavankar had a cameo in a recent episode. Here is a list of every character and Hollywood actor to cameo in The Mandalorian so far. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-mandalorian-season-2&captions=true"] IGN's review of The Mandalorian Chapter 12 praised the episode as "a good indicator that Season 2 seems to have found its groove." The Mandalorian won't take a break for any holidays, with a new episode planned every Friday through December 18.
