Spider-Man: Miles Morales Is a PS5 Launch Game

Sony has confirmed that Insomniac Games' Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a PS5 launch game, and we've seen our first look at gameplay footage. Shown at September's PS5 event, the gameplay demo revealed that the story will revolve around a conflict between the Roxxon faction and the Undeground, a group led by supervillian The Tinkerer. Miles gets into a tussle on the Braithwaite Bridge with the two groups, and the results are massively destructive. We even get a bit of a THAT moment from Spider-Man 2 as he holds two segments of bridge together with webbing. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/16/spider-man-miles-morales-gameplay-trailer"] Also revealed on the PlayStation Blog is the news that the game will launch on both PS5 and PS4, so if you're not planning on upgrading to next-gen you don't need to miss out. Apparently it will feature a 'next-gen upgrade path', where "when you do make the jump to PS5, the game comes with you." In addition, the Ultimate Edition of the PS5 version will come with a voucher for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered, which is a full remastering of the original game and its DLC. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=spider-man-miles-morales-playstation-5-showcase-screenshots&captions=true"] Sony announced Spider-Man: Miles Morales as a holiday 2020 game back at the June PS5 reveal showcase. Since then, there was some confusion over whether it would be an expansion or standalone game, but Insomniac explained how it's not quite a sequel, but will be a standalone game We've also learned more about Miles Morales' plot, that the game will feature a 4K/60 FPS performance mode, and how Miles will get a "full arc" in the next Spider-Man entry. For more on the PS5, find out how developers are using the PS5 DualSense's new features and how the PS5's SSD and 3D audio are being implemented into next-gen games. Star Wars: Luke Skywalker’s Yellow Lightsaber Becomes Canon

If you were a collector of Kenner's vintage Star Wars figures, you probably remember their early Luke Skywalker figures came with a yellow lightsaber rather than the movie-accurate blue saber. But now Marvel has made Luke's yellow saber part of official Star Wars canon, and in the process tied Luke's Jedi journey into the upcoming High Republic initiative. Read on to learn more about the major revelations in Star Wars #6 and Star Wars: Darth Vader #5, but beware of spoilers ahead for both comics! [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=star-wars-how-marvel-continues-the-story-of-the-empire-strikes-back&captions=true"] Star Wars #6 wraps up "The Destiny Path," a story arc which has been exploring Luke's journey of self-discovery immediately following the events of The Empire Strikes Back. Having tracked down Verla, the mysterious woman who caught Luke's lost blue saber in a vision, Luke is determined to continue his training and replace his lost weapon. Even narrowly surviving Verla's attempt to drown him hasn't dampened Luke's enthusiasm. Verla makes it plain she has no interest in becoming Luke's mentor. A failed Jedi herself, Verla has spent most of her life evading Darth Vader and the Sith Inquisitorius and trying to live in peace. However, she does finally give Luke the coordinates of Tempes, a world housing an ancient Jedi temple dating back to the High Republic era. There Luke finds numerous relics of the Jedi Order, including a discarded yellow saber that once belonged to one of the Jedi Temple Guards. [caption id="attachment_2407536" align="aligncenter" width="1397"]Art by Jesus Saiz. (Image Credit: Marvel/Lucasfilm) Art by Jesus Saiz. (Image Credit: Marvel/Lucasfilm)[/caption] While the Temple Guards normally wielded double-bladed lightsaber pikes, this particular saber looks to have been sliced in half, Darth Maul-style. Still, half a double-saber is better than no saber at all. Luke is reminded of that fact right away when he's forced to defend himself from the Grand Inquisitor, who seems to have mysteriously survived his death in the Season 1 finale of Star Wars Rebels. The Inquisitor is less than impressed by Luke's feeble swordsmanship, but Luke ultimately triumphs and slices through his opponent, revealing the Grand Inquisitor to be some sort of ghostly echo of his physical self. Luke escapes the temple with his new prize, and just before Darth Vader arrives. Vader is disgusted with his servant's inability to overpower a half-trained Jedi Knight. At this point, we learn the Inquisitor has been doomed to some sort of hellish, undead existence. He no longer has a true body, but the power of the Dark Side prevents him from being able to completely die. [caption id="attachment_2407544" align="aligncenter" width="929"]Art by Jesus Saiz. (Image Credit: Marvel/Lucasfilm) Art by Jesus Saiz. (Image Credit: Marvel/Lucasfilm)[/caption] Vader has problems of his own to deal with over in Darth Vader #5. This series is also set shortly after the events of The Empire Strikes Back, with Vader currently on a warpath hunting for anyone who helped hide the existence of his son. So far, that quest has reunited him with Sabé, former handmaiden to Padmé Amidala herself. Sabé and her allies are currently trying to kill Vader, believing him to be the assassin who murdered Anakin Skywalker. And as Obi-Wan Kenobi would argue, they're not wrong. Vader is plunged into new depths of emotional turmoil in this issue as he explores Padmé's tomb on Naboo and then travels to Polis Massa, the mining station where Padmé gave birth to her twin children at the end of Revenge of the Sith. There he finally slaughters Sabé and her team and prepares to learn the truth behind Padmé's demise. While the station is in ruins thanks to a previous Imperial attack, Vader is able to recover a fragment of a recording from that fateful day. He sees his dead wife's final words, as she insists to Obi-Wan there is still good in Anakin Skywalker. Then we see that turmoil unfold within Vader's mind: [caption id="attachment_240753" align="aligncenter" width="923"]Vader 01 Art by Raffaele Ienco. (Image Credit: Marvel/Lucasfilm)[/caption] More than ever, it becomes clear this latest Darth Vader comic is about how the seeds of Vader's redemption in Return of the Jedi were sown the day Vader fought Luke on Cloud City. Whether he likes it or not, Vader is haunted my memories of the man he was and remorse over what he lost. Unfortunately, Emperor Palpatine seems to sense this reawakening of Anakin Skywalker within the Dark Lord of the Sith. This issue ends with Palpatine electrocuting Vader, telling his servant he needs to replace his grief with fear. While it remains to be seen what the immediate future holds for both father and son, we do know the next story arc in Darth Vader will forge a direct connection with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Will the series reveal more about the Sith Wayfinders or deleted elements like Mustafar's Eye of Webbish Bog? Let us know what you think in the comments below. Study Finds Humans Want Androids to Look Human… Up to a Point

A new study finds people prefer their androids to have human-like features – up to a point. Psychologists at Emory University recently documented how people reacted to androids with a variety of features, from very human-looking to clearly machine-like. Their findings, published in the journal Perception, challenge some long-held assumptions about the cognitive mechanics behind "the uncanny valley" – that sensation when something designed to look human and familiar triggers repulsion instead. The mind-perception theory posits that when people see a machine that looks human, they believe it has a mind and that's what causes a sense of unease. But Emory's study suggests the opposite is actually true. "It's not the first step of attributing a mind to an android but the next step of 'dehumanizing' it by subtracting the idea of it having a mind that leads to the uncanny valley. Instead of just a one-shot process, it's a dynamic one," according to Wang Shensheng, the study's first author. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=saddest-robot-deaths&captions=true"] "The whole process is complicated but it happens within the blink of an eye," Wang said, according to ScienceDaily. "Our results suggest that at first sight we anthropomorphize an android, but within milliseconds we detect deviations and dehumanize it. And that drop in perceived animacy likely contributes to the uncanny feeling." In other words, it seems people want their androids to look more like C-3PO or Data and less like Ash from Alien. It's a conclusion Emory's study suggests will prove significant to both engineers and psychologists as robotics become increasingly present in workplaces and social interactions where people's ease with them will be crucial. It's an issue scientists have studied and wrestled with for several years. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/hbo-maxs-new-ridley-scott-show-exclusive-featurette"] The uncanny valley also remains a challenge for special effects artists in creating CG characters for movies and TV shows. Black Widow Movie Will ‘Honour’ the Character’s Story and Offer ‘Resolution’ for Fans

Scarlett Johansson has said the Black Widow movie will offer resolution for fans after the character's death in Avengers: Endgame, and said she approved of the way her story ended. Speaking to Total Film (as reported by GamesRadar), Johansson didn't go into detail on exactly how Black Widow would offer resolution, but - with controversy over the fact that the character didn't get as much of a send-off as Tony Stark in Endgame - it may be that she sees the movie as an extended goodbye of sorts. That would fit with the suggestion that Florence Pugh's Yelena may be being set up as a new Black Widow in the long term. Director Cate Shortland added that Black Widow will "honour" her death. "That [death] gives Black Widow an added heart at the end, because it’s not wrapping [the story] up," Shortland adds. "It’s actually what you feel – it’s not a narrative thing. It’s like, how do we make the audience feel?" [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/09/black-widow-official-final-trailer"] As for Natasha Romanoff's death itself, Johansson explained that she was in favour of the way she chose to sacrifice herself for the universe's gain: "I love Natasha. She’s had an incredible 10-year journey, and I felt that she was finally able to make an active choice. It seemed very in-character, that ultimate sacrifice that she makes. "She’s made peace with that, and, in some ways, has known that’s her destiny all along, in a weird poetic way. When you look back on the films, that’s in there. All the films have led her to that choice – or to be able to make that choice; or for it to be a choice.” When we'll see how Black Widow honours Natasha's choice is a whole other mystery, as it's looking increasingly likely that the Black Widow movie will be delayed again, perhaps into 2021. Taking place in between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, Black Widow will also be focused on wrapping up Natasha's MCU story arc. Alongside Johansson and Pugh, Black Widow will star David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz (The Mummy) as Melina, and O.T. Fagbenle (Handmaid's Tale) as Mason. Chain: Comics Superstar Scott Snyder Reveals Gory New Series

Comic book superstar Scott Snyder is launching a new creator-owned imprint called Best Jackett Press, with the first title being the recently announced Nocterra, which teams Snyder with fellow Batman veteran Tony S. Daniel. However, Nocterra is just the beginning of Snyder's new wave of creator-owned projects. And with Nocterra's Kickstarter drive set to wrap up soon, IGN can exclusively reveal the next Best Jackett Press title in the pipeline, Chain. Chain is a collaboration between Snyder and artist Ariela Kristantina (Adora and the Distance). The duo aren't revealing much about the plot or format of Chain just yet, but we do know it involves a mystery set during the collapse of human civilization. The team also provided IGN with an intriguing promo image for the new series: CHAIN_PromoFinal This art suggests the "chain" in question involves the food chain, and might involve the animal kingdom turning on the humans who used to feast on them. Or maybe another creature emerges to knock humans off the top off the top link in the chain? Whatever the premise here, Chain looks to be a very dark and gory new series, which happens to be a specialty of Snyder's. “Best Jackett Press is all about making the most exciting comics we can and I’m thrilled to pair with rising-star Ariela Kristantina for Chain, an upcoming book that’s different than anything I’ve tried," Snyder told IGN. "It’s a whodunit at the end of the world. I’ve teased projects lined up with other artists as well — all of which are in production — but this is one that’s benefiting directly from your incredible support on our Nocterra Kickstarter campaign. I feel lucky and grateful to be working with Ariela, and I encourage all of you to go seek out her work and follow her on social media — she’s fantastic! So thank you again - we can’t wait for you to see all that we have coming…” “The best teaser images are the ones that speak to the story’s themes, without revealing anything at all about the plot," said Kristantina. "Especially since CHAIN is a ways off, we wanted to create a teaser image that gets fans asking questions. Why are there handprints at the bottom of the image? What’s happened to the animal world? And why does it look like everything alive wants to kill us?” [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-best-comics-of-the-decade-2010-2019&captions=true"] There's no release date for Chain #1 yet, and it remains to be seen if it'll be published both through a Kickstarter drive and Image Comics, as with Nocterra, or if Snyder and Kristantina have a different plan in mind. For now, fans still have a little while left to pledge on the Nocterra Kickstarter before it wraps. As of publish, the project is close to hitting the $200,000 mark, meaning it's earned nearly five times its original funding goal. If the series crosses $200,000, all buyers of the physical editions will receive a bonus art print from Batman artist Jorge Jimenez. There's even a high-level pledge tier dubbed "Redshirt Speaking Role," where buyers will be drawn into a future issue of the comic and have their character die a violent death. As an added perk, you'll then receive Daniel's original art page after the issue is published. In other recent comic book news, Batman/Catwoman finally has a release date, Jim Lee has confirmed DC's 5G reboot is no longer happening and Marvel is offering hundreds of free Black Panther comics on ComiXology in tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman. The Falcon and Winter Soldier: Anthony Mackie Reveals New Falcon Costume

Anthony Mackie has offered a look at the new suit The Falcon will wear in the upcoming Falcon and Winter Soldier, after production restarted on the streaming series. Looking like a close match to concept art we've previously seen for the series, Mackie's suit features the V-shaped chest motif we've seen on multiple Falcon costumes over the years, and looks a little less armour-focused than his previous MCU look. As it turns out, the person taking that photograph was The Winter Soldier, Sebastian Stan, who may himself have offered a glimpse at a new look for the character. While it's entirely possible that Stan just, you know, dresses like that, his leather jacket resembles another piece of concept art – it may be that both characters will be slightly more casually dressed for their TV starring roles. Well, as casual as you can be while still using a bulletproof robot arm. Production on The Falcon and Winter Soldier stopped in March, and the show was delayed out of its August release window as a result. With production only now restarting, it's unclear when the show (and the likes of WandaVision, Loki, and other Marvel streaming series) will air. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is a spinoff series focusing on Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson – who was personally handed Captain America’s shield by Steve Rogers at the end of Avengers: Endgame – and Sebastian Stan’s deprogrammed assassin “Bucky” Barnes (a.k.a. The Winter Soldier). Returning characters include Daniel Bruhl’s villainous Zemo from Captain America: Civil War, and Emily Van Camp’s Sharon Carter. The series will also introduce Wyatt Russell as John Walker – a.k.a. U.S. Agent. Click here for a quick rundown of how Sam Wilson became Captain America in the comics, which seems to be where this series is headed given how Avengers: Endgame concluded. Mass Effect Trilogy Remastered Retail Listings Appear for PS4, Xbox One and Switch

Listings for Mass Effect Trilogy Remastered have appeared on Portuguese retail site GamingReplay, and have been subsequently removed. As spotted by Nibellion on Twitter, the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch listings offer an October 2020 release date and are emblazoned with the same logo found on the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 Mass Effect Trilogy. Rumours about a potential Mass Effect Trilogy remaster have been bubbling for some time now, but these listings certainly add further fuel to the fire. With a Sony Showcase and a Nintendo Direct Mini Partner Showcase just around the corner, there are plenty of opportunities for this rumour to become a reality, too. While retail listings are sometimes used as convenient placeholders for retailer, further speculation has been caused by the fact that those listings were quickly removed after the news began to spread. We've contacted EA and Gaming Replay for comment. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/06/billie-eilishs-secret-mass-effect-connection-ign-daily-fix"] Back in February 2019, Bioware told Polygon that the studio is "definitely not done with Mass Effect," suggesting that the series may experience a return in the near future. A remastered collection of the first three games would be a good place to start. In other N7 news, check out this video detailing Billie Eilish's secret Mass Effect connection. Super Mario 3D All-Stars Review – Hey Now, You’re An All-Star

Mario's never been one to turn down a shindig--one need only look at the numerous Mario Parties he's thrown over the years for proof of that--but his anniversary is one occasion that is rarely celebrated. His 25th anniversary was marked with a Wii re-release of Super Mario All-Stars, of all things--hardly the most auspicious way to commemorate such a remarkable milestone. This year, however, Nintendo is giving Mario a more fitting anniversary tribute, headlining the festivities with Super Mario 3D All-Stars, a Switch compilation featuring a trio of the plumber's most influential adventures: N64's Super Mario 64, GameCube's Super Mario Sunshine, and Wii's Super Mario Galaxy.

But while Mario 3D All-Stars is ostensibly a celebration of Mario's history, a chance to revisit the plumber's genre-defining leap into the third dimension, it's still lacking in some regards. For one, you won't find anything in the way of supplemental material here: just Mario's first three 3D adventures, modestly touched up for high-definition displays, and their accompanying soundtracks. The presentation is minimal but handsomely designed, and the soundtracks are a nice bonus, but the package on the whole hardly feels like a celebration of the series in the way that, say, Kirby's Dream Collection or even the original Super Mario All-Stars did.

Still, the games that are included here are some of Mario's most memorable, and they've all been given an HD sheen. Mario 64 runs in 720p whether you're playing on the television or in handheld mode, while Sunshine and Galaxy both run in 1080p docked and 720p in handheld. Sunshine's aspect ratio has also been increased to 16:9. Thanks to the improved resolution, the games all look more vibrant and colorful than ever, which helps mask their otherwise aging visuals; Galaxy in particular has benefited greatly from the HD touchup and is often stunning. The UI elements in each game look much crisper as well, and the in-game text has been updated to reflect the tweaked controls (and in Mario 64's case, the fuzzy font has been smoothed over, making it much easier to read).
