The Other History of the DC Universe Finally Gets a Release Date

Well over two years after it was originally announced, The Other History of the DC Universe finally has a release date. This dramatic, politically charged comic from 12 Years a Slave screenwriter John Ridley will debut on November 24, 2020. The Other History of the DC Universe will center around various minority heroes in the DCU. The main cast will include Black Lightning and his daughter Thunder, Herald, Bumblebee, Katana and Renee Montoya. Ridley's story will reexamine key events in DC lore from the perspective of these characters and chronicle their respective struggles to embrace their true selves. [caption id="attachment_2391820" align="aligncenter" width="1289"]The Other History of the DC Universe #1 cover by Giuseppe Camuncoli. Ridley (whose past DC work includes The American Way and The Authority: Human on the Inside) will be joined by artists Giuseppe Camuncoli and Andrea Cucchi and colorist José Villarrubia. Camuncoli and Jamal Campbell will provide cover art. “Following the American Way sequel, I was eager to tell a different story in the DC Universe, one that spotlights heroes who operate outside the prevailing culture,” said Ridley in DC's press release. “Considering the events of the last few months, I don’t think there has been a more urgent need to see the world through a variety of lenses and perspectives. I am deeply appreciative of DC, Cammo, and Andrea, and to all the artisans who have literally put years of work into these stories. I am so enthusiastic for the opportunity to share this series with both the longtime fans of the DCU and a new generation of readers who I hope will feel invited and encouraged to join in.” [caption id="attachment_2391819" align="aligncenter" width="1289"]The Other History of the DC Universe #1 cover by Jamal Campbell. (Image Credit: DC)[/caption] The Other History of the DC Universe will be published under DC's mature readers Black Label imprint. The series will span five issues and will ship bimonthly beginning in November. In other mature readers DC news, the publisher announced the return of Jeff Lemire's post-apocalyptic series Sweet Tooth. Appropriately dubbed Sweet Tooth: The Return, the new series isn't a continuation of the original Vertigo book, but what DC describes as "a re-imagining." Here's the official description:
Sweet Tooth: The Return is no re-hash of the original series, but rather a bold re-imagining of the Sweet Tooth mythology; taking elements of the original series and remixing them into something familiar, but totally new. A divided world. A planet long ago past the point of devastation. And at the center of it all, a child who didn’t ask to be born into any of this, but who has no choice but to try and forge some life for himself. His visions and dreams may not be real at all…they may just be fiction. But they are hope. And sometimes hope is enough.
Sweet Tooth: The Return is a six-issue limited series written and drawn by Lemire, with colors by Villarrubia and covers by Lemire and Jim Lee. The first issue is scheduled for release on November 3. Netflix has also greenlit a Sandman series, based on Neil Gaiman's beloved fantasy comic. According to Gaimain, the series was close to beginning production before being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Batwoman: Ruby Rose Explains Why She Quit The CW Series

Ruby Rose has explained the reasons behind her decision to exit Batwoman after starring in the titular role of the Arrowverse series for just one season. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Rose elaborated on the reasons why she decided to hang up the cape and cowl ahead of Batwoman's second season, revealing that her back injury played a part in her decision to not continue in the role Kate Kane/Batwoman for the DC drama. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/07/09/new-batwoman-actress-has-been-cast"] "Being the lead of a superhero show is tough. Being the lead in anything is tough," Rose told the publication. "But I think, in that particular instance, it was a lot more difficult because I was still recovering from my surgery. I had my surgery and then 10 days later I went to work, which maybe wasn't the best idea. Most people take about a month or three off before they return to work, so it was definitely made more difficult by that. But as far as being a lead of a show or a film —  regardless if it's action or if it's emotional — in whichever ways it's taxing." Rose underwent emergency surgery last year after herniating two discs from her intense stunt work on the show, which triggered a preexisting injury to flare up and cause her chronic pain, with her spinal cord at risk of being severed and paralyzing her. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/09/24/batwoman-explained-how-the-batman-love-interest-became-a-lgbtq-icon"] In conversation with EW, Rose said that she was proud of herself "for working under sort of interesting circumstances" while in recovery from the surgery, but admitted that she had time to reassess her role on The CW series while the production was shut down due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. "It wasn't so much [the injury], especially because after we wrapped up we didn't get to finish the real finale because of COVID," Rose explained, referencing the shortened Batwoman season, which ended after 20 episodes instead of 22 as originally planned. "You know, you have time in quarantine and sort of isolation to just think about a lot of different things and what you want to achieve in life and what you want to do. I think for both [me and the producers], it was a great opportunity to have a dialogue about a lot of things. I respect them so much and they've been so respectful to me." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=tv-shows-that-killed-off-a-main-character&captions=true"] The CW already announced that it will not be recasting the Kate Kane role for the upcoming second season, nor will Rose's character be killed off in between Seasons 1 and 2. Instead, actress Javicia Leslie will take over the lead role as a new character named Ryan Wilder, who is described as "likeable, messy, a little goofy and untamed," and apparently nothing like "the woman who wore the batsuit before her." Batwoman Season 2 is expected to debut in January 2021. The CW previously hinted that the next Arrowverse crossover will focus on Batwoman and the new Superman and Lois series, though it's unclear whether those plans have changed since Rose's departure. We're hoping to learn more at DC's FanDome virtual event, which is scheduled to launch on Saturday, August 22. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Adele Ankers is a Freelance Entertainment Journalist. Project Ragtag Producer Says Cancelled Title Would’ve Been ‘The Best Star Wars Game Ever Made’

A producer who worked on Project Ragtag has said that the cancelled game would have been "the best Star Wars game ever made" In an interview with Minnmax, ex-Visceral Games producer Zach Mumbach shed some more details about the canned EA project which, in his words, was set to be an "amazingly-well crafted" 12-hour experience. Mumbach talks about how a leadership team was brought in to cut and ship the game, who had a different vision for Ragtag than Amy Hennig's crew at Visceral. "I'm thinking, this is effing Amy Hennig, we have the chance to make the greatest Star Wars game ever made and a possible Game of the Year contender." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/10/19/visceral-star-wars-writer-speaks-out-about-project-ign-daily-fix"] When asked about what might have happened if the team were given more time, Mumbach told MinnMax's Ben Hanson, "I think we would have made the best Star Wars game ever made. The story and the setup and the characters... like, man it was set up for success but what we had to execute was going to take a while." Mumbach later talks about how EA had started to pivot away from single-player experiences, which led to Ragtag's ultimate demise, and how frustrating it was to see them return to the formula years later with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. According to Mumbach, the team had a set of unfinished levels and a set piece involving a "crazy AT-ST moment." "You were on foot running from it and it was trying to hunt you down but you were more agile, slipping through all these alleyways and just barrelling through and crashing and using all the destruction of Frostbite." Mumbach also described the gameplay as "Star Wars Uncharted." EA announced in June that it wants to "double down" on making Star Wars games. We're currently approaching the October 3 release of Star Wars: Squadrons, a dogfighting space simulator developed by Motive Studios. Control Will Only Get a Free Next-Gen Upgrade from the New Ultimate Edition

Existing owners of Control on console won't get a free upgrade to its PS5 or Xbox Series X versions - but those who buy a new Ultimate Edition will. The Ultimate Edition was announced today, and will be released on Steam on August 27, followed by Epic Games Store, PS4 and Xbox One versions on September 10. It will come with all previous upgrades, and both of the game's expansions. Alongside that announcement came the news that those who bought the console versions of the Ultimate Edition will get a free digital upgrade to the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game when they arrive – but those who already own the game on console will not. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/12/control-ultimate-edition-trailer"] A product FAQ for the Ultimate Edition makes clear that, "The free upgrade path to Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 version of Control is only available for Control Ultimate Edition." The FAQ also confirms that the next-gen versions of the game will arrive digitally by the "end of 2020". While by no means a mandated policy, it's become unusual to see game companies locking off free upgrades on cross-gen titles - whether that's through in-house schemes like Xbox Smart Delivery, or publisher-specific programs like EA's Dual Entitlement. We named Control our Game of the Year for 2019, and its final expansion, AWE - which crosses over the worlds of Control and Alan Wake - arrives on August 27. We recently heard that developer Remedy is now working on a full new game set in the Control-Alan Wake connected universe. Tenet: Check Out an Exclusive New Poster

Tenet, Christopher Nolan's still-mysterious new action film, is due for release in Australia and the UK on August 26, and the US on September 3 - and we have an exclusive new poster to show you. The launch poster shows John David Washington on one side of bulletproof glass and Robert Pattinson on the other, with a bullet hole between them. What does it mean? Who knows, but we cannot wait to find out. TENET Launch Poster After a number of delays, Tenet's settled on its staggered set of release dates across the world, allowing it to avoid skipping theaters for VOD. Aside from trailer clips that show us Tenet will centre around Nolan's long-held fascination with time (and time manipulation), we know precious little about the movie. What we know for sure is that it'll use a startlingly small amount of VFX for a modern action film, with fewer than 300 VFX shots in the entire runtime - the director even blew up an entire plane because it was simpler than CG. Dwayne Johnson Is the World’s Highest-Paid Actor for the Second Year Running

Dwayne Johnson has been named the world's highest-paid actor for a second consecutive year. According to Forbes, Johnson earned an estimated $87.5 million between June 1, 2019, and June 1, 2020, including $23.5 million for the upcoming Netflix action heist thriller Red Notice, which he stars in alongside Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot. Johnson has also pulled in additional profits from his successful Project Rock apparel line for Under Armour. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=dwayne-the-rock-johnsons-10-best-movies&captions=true"] Check out the rest of Forbes' 2020 highest-paid actors list below:
  1. Dwayne Johnson - $87.5 million
  2. Ryan Reynolds - $71.5 million
  3. Mark Wahlberg - $58 million
  4. Ben Affleck - $55 million
  5. Vin Diesel - $54 million
  6. Akshay Kumar - $48.5 million
  7. Lin-Manuel Miranda - $45.5 million
  8. Will Smith - $44.5 million
  9. Adam Sandler - $41 million
  10. Jackie Chan - $40 million
Netflix shelled out almost $140 million worth of checks to six of the actors featured on the list. The report notes that Adam Sandler secured one of the largest paychecks from the streaming giant, having earned $31 million as part of his multi-year deal with the company. Netflix paid out an additional $85 million to Ryan Reynolds, Mark Wahlberg, Ben Affleck and Vin Diesel, on top of Johnson's Red Notice paycheck. Collectively, this year's ten top-earning actors amassed a combined total of $545.5 million. Ryan Reynolds secured second place in the rankings, having earned $71.5 million over the course of the past year, including $20 million apiece for Netflix's Six Underground and Red Notice. He appears ahead of Mark Wahlberg who takes the third spot on the list with his earnings of $58 million. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/10/disneys-jungle-cruise-official-trailer-2"] Over the years, Netflix has garnered a reputation for spending enormous amounts of money to secure original streaming content for its platform in a bid to stay ahead of its competitors in the increasingly crowded streaming landscape. In fact, earlier this year, it was projected that Netflix would be spending $17.3 billion on new content for 2020, which is up from $15.3 billion last year. Xbox Series X and S Could Launch on November 6, According to Controller Leaks

A series of alleged controller leaks may have revealed a November 6 release date for Xbox Series X and the much-rumoured Xbox Series S. A summary of an unboxing of the alleged Xbox Series S controller was posted to ResetEra by user Jawmuncher, who claims to have acquired a picture from the owner of the controller's online registered warranty page. The 'Microsoft Limited Warranty' for the Xbox Series S controller appears to end on November 5, 2021. Microsoft's Limited Warranty covers a year from purchase, which suggests a November 5 or November 6, 2020 release date. Further to that, The Verge's Tom Warren also managed to source an alleged picture of the Xbox Series S controller packaging, which features a sticker noting that the units should not be sold or displayed "before November 6, 2020." November 6, 2020 is technically a full year prior to November 5, 2021, the warranty end date featured above. If both of these pictures are legitimate, the evidence suggests that the next-gen lineup of Xbox consoles will launch on November 6, 2020. Yesterday, Microsoft confirmed a November launch window for the Xbox Series X, which gives these leaks some extra credibility. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=confirmed-xbox-series-x-games&captions=true"] It's worth considering, however, that next-gen Xbox peripherals and accessories may launch before the consoles themselves. Previously, a Microsoft Store listing for Yakuza: Like A Dragon noted the game's launch date as November 13, 2020 – in a separate blog post, Microsoft revealed that Yakuza: Like a Dragon will launch "day one" on Xbox Series X. We likely aren't too far away from an official confirmation of Microsoft's next-gen launch plans - even if Xbox Series X's flagship launch game, Halo Infinite, has been delayed into 2021. Shin Megami Tensei 3 Nocturne HD Remaster Will Feature Dante From The Devil May Cry Series As Paid DLC

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster will feature Dante from the Devil May Cry series via paid DLC. The news was revealed on the Atlus blog earlier today. Dante makes his return in the remaster thanks to the 'Maniax Pack' DLC which players will be able to purchase for 980 yen (roughly £7 or $9 USD). A trailer for the Maniax Pack arrived alongside the announcement, revealing that the DLC will be available at launch on October 29th in Japan, and those who own the Maniax Pack will be able to select "NEW GAME -Maniax-" in the start menu to add Dante to the game. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/07/20/shin-megami-tensei-3-nocturne-hd-remaster-official-trailer"] A western release for the Maniax Pack has not yet been revealed, but it seems likely. Famously, a sticker saying "Featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series" sticker was put on the box to help sell the original game in the west, despite the character's very brief appearance in the game. The Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster is based on the Chronicle Edition of the game, which normally features a character called Kuzunoha Raido from the Devil Summoner series in Dante's place. If purchased, this DLC will let players reskin the game to the Maniax version, depending on their preference. Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster's Western launch is currently slated for Spring 2021, landing on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
