AMC Theaters to Sell Tickets for 15 Cents on Reopening Day

AMC will reopen theaters at more than 100 locations in the U.S. on August 20, with admission prices set at just 15 cents per ticket, for one day only, in a promotion that commemorates the chain's centennial celebration. Variety reports that AMC Theaters will be rolling back ticket prices to roughly match the same rate that moviegoers would have paid in 1920, "the year that the company's founders, the Dubinsky Brothers, began operations with a single movie screen in Kansas City, Missouri." The throwback ticket prices will apply to the chain's slate of legacy movies, which includes the likes of Black Panther and The Empire Strikes Back. Tickets for these catalog titles will increase to $5 apiece after opening day while new movies will cost approximately $10 per ticket, depending on the market. The theatrical release calendar for new films comprises of Russell Crowe's revenge-thriller Unhinged and Disney's long-awaited New Mutants, which is expected to debut on August 28, while Christopher Nolan's highly-anticipated Tenet is set for September 3, one week after its international release. Warner Bros. demonstrated flexibility by releasing Tenet in other territories first while the U.S. theater release date suffered several delays due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. AMC now aims to have approximately "two-thirds of its more than 600 locations operational" in time for the film's release. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-delayed-movie-due-to-coronavirus-so-far&captions=true"] AMC is just one of many companies that has been hit hard by the pandemic. After closing more than 600 locations in March, AMC furloughed its CEO and other corporate employees, as the company faced financial uncertainty after its credit rating was downgraded amid fears that the entertainment chain could run out of cash during its extended theater closures. Fortnite Lowers V-Bucks Prices, Calls out Apple and Google’s ‘Exorbitant’ Mobile Payment Fees

Update: Epic has also confirmed that, if you've spent real money within Fortnite in the last 30 days (July 14, 2020 - August 13, 2020), you'll be given 20% of the purchase total in bonus V-Bucks. All active players will also be given the Shooting Star Pickaxe (pictured below) for free: fortnite-shooting-starstaff-pickaxe-1920x1080-730034937 [poilib element="accentDivider"] Epic Games has permanently lowered the cost of Fortnite V-Bucks by 20% across all platforms, including adding a new "direct payment" option on mobile, calling out Apple and Google's "exorbitant" payment fees in the process. The 'Fortnite Mega Drop' is explained in further detail in this FAQ from Epic. On PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Mac, and PC, V-Bucks and real-money offers are automatically discounted by 20% - meaning 1,000 V-Bucks now cost $7.99, down from $9.99. Mobile is a little different, where players can still buy using Apple or Google accounts at the higher price, but will now offer 'Epic direct payment' when purchasing V-Bucks on mobile devices to save the 20%. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/23/fortnite-slurp-legends-trailer"] Epic explains that this allows the company to "pass along the savings to players," noting the "exorbitant 30% fee" Apple and Google collect on every V-Buck payment as a reason for the alternate, discounted payment method on mobile. In the future, Epic is open to altering the deal "if Apple and Google lower their fees on payments." Epic also made it clear that this direct payment method is just as safe as other alternatives. "In operating Fortnite on open platforms and operating the Epic Games Store, Epic has processed over $1,600,000,000 of direct payments successfully, and uses industry trusted encryption and security measures to protect customer transactions." In other Fortnite news, it looks like the game has initiated an event related to the Christopher Nolan movie Tenet. Last week, Fortnite received the Joy Ride update that brought drivable cars to the game. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Jordan Oloman is a freelance writer for IGN. Follow him on Twitter.

Metro Developer Acquired By Embracer Group, Working on Metro and ‘New AAA IP’

The developer behind the Metro series is working on "the Metro franchise" and a "new AAA IP" after being acquired by THQ Nordic's holding company, Embracer Group for around $80 million USD. Embracer Group picked up 4A Games, its proprietary game engine and the Metro IP in the deal. The Ukraine-based company will now "operate as an independent studio under Saber Interactive," which Embracer also acquired this year. As for what's next for the studio in the wake of the acquisition, 4A Games CEO Dean Sharpe issued a statement: "Together we will continue to build on the Metro franchise and will focus on bringing a multiplayer experience to our fanbase." Sharpe also added that the team is looking forward "to building a new and even more ambitious AAA IP in the near future." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/02/13/metro-exodus-review"] 4A will be working with Saber collaboratively on "an entirely new project that combines the AAA production values of 4A games" and the "combined engine and technology know-how and Saber's experience on multiplayer and live operations." So it looks like 4A Games is working on two new projects right now, a new Metro project in collaboration with Saber Interactive that may feature multiplayer, and a new AAA IP. Not satisfied with just 4A Games, Embracer Group has also picked up Sola Media, Pow Wow Entertainment, Palindrome Interactive, Rare Earth Games, Deca Games, New World Interactive and Vermila Studios in its most recent acquisition spree. The release notes how this news marks an "important milestone" for the relationship between 4A Games and Deep Silver/Koch Media, the publishing arm of the Metro series which is also owned by Embracer Group. In other Embracer Group news, it was announced back in May of this year that the holding company has 69 unannounced games. We reviewed 4A Games' latest outing Metro Exodus in February 2019, scoring it an 8.5 and calling it "the best Metro game yet." The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Grimm star David Giuntoli will headline the feature as the voice of Bruce Wayne/Batman alongside Arrow's Michael Jai White who will reprise his role as Ben Turner/Bronze Tiger for the animated project, which also stars Mark Dacascos as the voice of Richard Dragon, Kelly Hu as Lady Shiva, James Hong as O-Sensei and Josh Keaton as Jeffrey Burr. [caption id="attachment_239224" align="aligncenter" width="1280"]Batman Soul of the Dragon Image credit: DC/Warner Bros. Bruce Timm, the man behind Batman: The Animated Series and so much more, is executive producing the picture, with Sam Liu, a DC animation veteran known for his work on the likes of Reign of the Supermen and Batman: The Killing Joke, directing and producing from a script penned by Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge writer Jeremy Adams. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 Includes a Skate Trick’s Renaming to Honor Its Creator

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 will include a classic trick with a new name in honor of the trick's original creator. Skateboarders and fans of the THPS series are likely well aware of what a mute air or mute grab is, but many might not know the history of this trick's name. Tony Hawk took to Instagram to announce that, in the upcoming THPS 1+2 remaster, the trick will have a new name. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=tony-hawks-pro-skate-1-and-2-new-skaters-screenshots&captions=true"] "For nearly 40 years, we've shamelessly referred to this trick as the 'mute' air/grab," Hawk said on his Instagram today. "Here is the backstory: around 1981, a deaf skater and Colton skatepark local named Chris Weddle was a prominent amateur on the competition circuit. The 'Indy' air had just been created and named so somebody proposed that grabbing with the front hand should be known as the 'Tracker' air." Hawk explained that because Weddle was the first to do the trick, the trick should be named after him. Weddle was often referred to as the "quiet, mute guy," Hawk said, and so the mute air was made. Hawk admitted that he and other skaters went along with the name in naivety, not realizing that Weddle might not have agreed with the name. "In recent years, a few people have reached out to Chris (who still skates) about this trick and the name it was given," Hawk said. "He has been very gracious in his response but it is obvious that a different name would have honored his legacy, as he is hearing impaired but not lacking speech. I asked him last year as I was diving into trick origins and he said he would have rather named it the 'deaf' or 'Weddle' grab if given the choice." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/12/tony-hawk-pro-skater-12-remake-warehouse-demo-gameplay"] Hawk said the Weddle's exact words were "I am deaf, not mute." When players boot up THPS 1+2, they'll find that the trick is now called the Weddle Grab. "It's going to be challenging to break the habit of saying the old name but I think Chris deserves the recognition." You can perform the Weddle Grab yourself in THPS 1 + 2 this Friday when the Warehouse Demo goes live on Aug. 14.  Be sure to check out our THPS 1 + 2 remaster Warehosue Demo impressions while waiting for the demo to go live.
