Deadpool Co-Creator Calls Out Disney For Not Using the Character

Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld has called out Disney for not properly utilising the character, not just in films, but for video games and animated properties. He adds that he's not aware of any ongoing entertainment discussions about using the character. Speaking to IGN as part of our Comic-Con@Home livestream coverage, Liefeld was asked if Deadpool could lead another video game after his last starring role in 2013. His response went on to cover a lot more than just games: "Why wouldn't they?" Liefeld replied, "I'm just going to tell you right now: screw movies. Screw this whole Deadpool movie talk, OK? ... Here’s what I would say. 'Hey Disney, Hi. It’s Rob. You paid 70 billion dollars for Fox. OK? You paid 70 billion dollars. You can't run your Disney parks, which are 50% of your overall earnings, they have been shut down for 5 months. You have no way to get your 3 billion dollars' worth of movies to the theaters. No Mulan, no Black Widow, no Eternals.'" [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/05/15/deadpool-2-review"] Liefeld's point centers around the fact that with Deadpool 3 seemingly a non-starter for Marvel's movie slate, Disney should be looking to monetise the character in different ways, particularly as the effects of the pandemic make drawn or digital animation more easily achievable (and monetisable) than live-action. "Animators can work from home. Digital artists can work from home. [...] Deadpool’s kind of popular. Deadpool cartoons, Deadpool video games – of course they should be making them. Iger, whoever is running the ship over there, what are you doing to get a return on your 70 billion dollars? [...] Of course they should be making more Deadpool video games, of course they should be making a Deadpool cartoon. What the hell?" Liefeld also points to the fact that other Marvel comics properties have been utilised successfully outside of the MCU umbrella, and seems to be hoping for his character to take a similar path: "[Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige, love you buddy, you're a genius, but there are other geniuses. The guys that made Into the Spider-Verse? Geniuses. Disney had nothing to do with that. Disney had nothing to do with Deadpool, Deadpool 2, Logan. Let these other lieutenants make you a return on your investments. I don't need another Deadpool movie, don't need it – got two great ones. They're perfect." Unfortunately, with all of Liefeld's belief in the potential success of Deadpool properties, he doesn't hold out much hope for them happening: "There's a demand there, I hope they fill it, but I'm not sure they will." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/08/05/deadpool-2-director-says-sequel-doesnt-have-to-be-rated-r-what-to-watch"] When asked if he'd heard about talks regarding using Deadpool outside of comic books, Liefeld said, "There has been no Deadpool entertainment talks that I am aware of." He added that movie talks were "above my paygrade", but points out that the producers of the Deadpool movies, and stars like Josh Brolin, have contracts covering multiple films, which would seemingly not be extinguished by Disney's purchase of Fox and its properties. Notably, before Disney's Fox acquisition, a Deadpool animated series from Atlanta's Donald and Stephen Glover was cancelled during production, which the CEO of FX blamed on Marvel. (At the time, Marvel's television output was overseen by Jeph Loeb; Marvel Television has since been brought under Kevin Feige's purview, paving the way for greater synergy between Marvel's movie and TV properties, including Disney+ series orders for TV shows featuring Marvel movie characters like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, and Hawkeye.) [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=marvel-cinematic-universe-every-upcoming-movie-and-tv-show&captions=true"] It leaves Deadpool's status in the entertainment industry somewhat in limbo. The character isn't slated to appear in the MCU, but Deadpool 1 and 2 star Ryan Reynolds has previously said "we're working on it". However, Liefeld more recently said there was "no movement" on a Deadpool 3. Legend of Korra, Lucifer Season 5, and Everything Else New to Netflix in August

Netflix is releasing some classic films and fan-favorite returning series to its lineup for August 2020. To kick things off, Netflix is dropping all four seasons of The Legend of Korra on August 14, and the Season 5 premiere of Lucifer on August 21. The streamer recently revealed that Lucifer has been renewed for a sixth and final season. The Danish post-apocalyptic drama The Rain will debut its third and final season on August 8. And if you missed Seasons 1 and 2 of Cobra Kai on YouTube, you can binge them on Netflix beginning on August 28. On the movie front, Netflix will release the original Jurassic Park film directed by Steven Spielberg. The streaming provider is also dropping Project Power on August 14, a sci-fi action thriller led by Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Here's how Netflix describes the film: "On the streets of New Orleans, word begins to spread about a mysterious new pill that unlocks superpowers unique to each user. The catch: You don’t know what will happen until you take it. While some develop bulletproof skin, invisibility, and super strength, others exhibit a deadlier reaction. But when the pill escalates crime within the city to dangerous levels, a local cop (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) teams with a teenage dealer (Dominique Fishback) and a former soldier fueled by a secret vendetta (Jamie Foxx) to fight power with power and risk taking the pill in order to track down and stop the group responsible for creating it." US Army Will Reportedly Halt Twitch Activities After Backlash

The United States Army will suspend its activities on the streaming platform Twitch, for the time being, due to the negative backlash the organization has received in recent weeks. According to reporter Rod “Slasher” Breslau, the negative response to the Army’s activities on Twitch — including orchestrating giveaways that lead to recruitment pages (which Twitch banned), and blocking users from asking about war crimes in the channel’s chat section — have made the Army reconsider its reach out efforts online. On the same day, reports appeared that U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) will file a measure that will prevent the United States military from trying to recruit applicants through video games, including esports and streaming platforms like Twitch. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/03/08/heres-who-trump-has-invited-to-the-white-house-to-discuss-violence-in-video-games-ign-news"] As reported by Vice, a draft amendment has been filed on July 22 to the House Appropriations bill that would stop the military from using funds to “maintain a presence on Twitch.com or any video game, e-sports, or live-streaming platform.” Since the Pentagon’s budget is still in its early stages, the measure still has a long way’s to go before actually making it into the bill, if it ends up making it in at all. The United States has a history of using video games as a potential recruitment tool for the Army. The organization even developed its own video game called America’s Army to aid in these efforts. The Army’s foray into Twitch was met with skepticism, especially as it reached out to Twitch’s community. During a livestream, one commenter repeatedly asked “What’s your favorite war crime?” in the Twitch chats, leading the channel to begin banning users. The ACLU says the bans violated first amendment rights. The US Army has been trying to make a bigger digital footprint elsewhere on social media to mixed results. Including this now infamous exchange with the Discord Twitter account. us_army_uwu [poilib element="accentDivider"] Matt T.M. Kim is a reporter for IGN.

Check Out the Art of Spyro Reignited Trilogy

Ahead of the studio's next release, Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, Toys for Bob has unleashed The Art of Spyro Reignited Trilogy, a thorough art book that also delves into the process of reimagining the classic trilogy of Spyro adventures. Check out the gallery below for a selection of pages from the book, which features a look at the gorgeous character and world art from the Reignited Trilogy and is now available for purchase. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-art-of-spyro-reignited-trilogy&captions=true"] "Making Spyro Reignited Trilogy was a leap of faith - full of exhilaration, hope, wonder, fear, and doubt," art director Josh Nadelberg writes in the book's introduction. "We had the most delightful source material to work from that anyone could possibly imagine, an amazingly talented team, and an organization who believed in us and supported us every step of the way. But more than anything, we knew that we were working on something that was going to mean so much to people whose memories of Spyro were formative and profound." The book is full of insights into character and world design choices, the process of creating Spyro himself, and explanation for many of the choices the artists made in adapting those PS One characters for a new life on modern consoles. Nadelberg, Nicholas Kole, Serina Mo, and more artists offer insight alongside the art, which spans across all three games in the Reignited Trilogy. In our Spyro Reignited Trilogy review, I praised the artistry of the worlds, which in many ways brought characters and locations to life in unexpected ways. Every dragon Spyro rescues in the original Spyro the Dragon is now a unique character, while everything from the Summer Forest of Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage to the Evening Lake of Spyro: Year of the Dragon has been modernized with a host of new details. Bomb Rush Cyberfunk Is The Spiritual Successor To Jet Set Radio

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, a spiritual successor to Jet Set Radio has been officially revealed. Cyberfunk will even feature music composed by Jet Set Radio maestro Hideki Naganuma, further linking the two series. Cyberfunk was revealed on Twitter today by Team Reptile, the developer behind Lethal League Blaze and Megabyte Punch. "Start your own cypher and dance, paint, trick, face off with the cops and stake your claim to the extrusions and cavities of a sprawling metropolis in an alternate future set to he musical brainwaves of Hideki Naganuma," the game's Steam page reads. According to the description, each stage will be a "neighborhood that represents one time of day" and the game will be "focused on single-player." The music for the game will be provided by Hideki Naganuma, the esteemed composer behind the Jet Set Radio games, also known for his work on Sonic Rush, Ollie King, and many more. His trademark style can be heard in the Bomb Rush Cyberfunk sting, which gives us our first glimpse at the game's stylish world. We haven't had a new Jet Set Radio game for 18 years, and fans have been clamoring for a revival ever since. In absence of SEGA's interest in reviving the series, indie developers have kept the Jet Set spirit alive, with Team Reptile's previous games - such as Lethal League - and other indie titles such as Rocket Juice Game's Neon Tail evoking the Jet Set Radio style, albeit across different genres and settings. There is no solid release date or platforms listed as of right now, but Team Reptile plans to launch Bomb Rush Cyberfunk in the Jet Set Radio "Future." How apt.
