Watch Dogs: Legion – Release Date, Gameplay, and More

Updated 7/15 with release date, gameplay from Ubisoft Forward, and new information about permadeath. Watch Dogs: Legion is the third and upcoming entry to Ubisoft's hacking-filled series. Set in the near future in a fictional version of London where the UK has withdrawn from the EU, the authoritarian government is now using ctOS and a private security company to spy on its citizens and violently enforce the law. Players are tasked with recruiting DedSec members to form a resistance against the corrupt regime using a new mechanic introduced in Watch Dogs: Legion that allows players to assume control and play as anyone in the game. Watch Dogs: Legion is an ambitious game, to say the least, and we've put together everything we know so far, including more about the gameplay.

Release Date

The release date for Watch Dogs: Legion is October 29 and will be available on PS4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC (on Epic Games Store and Uplay). Watch Dogs: Legion will be a cross-generation game meaning it will eventually have Xbox Series X and PS5 versions, and both are confirmed to be free upgrades for those who purchase it for the PS4 and Xbox One.

Story and Gameplay

Watch Dogs: Legion is an open world action-adventure game that takes place in a fictional post-Brexit version of London. The city has been taken over by a private security group called Albion, who have used the Blume Corporation's central operating system, or ctOS, to turn London into a surveillance state. It'll be up to you to recruit a group of Operatives to join DedSec and regain control of the city. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/watch-dogs-legion-gameplay-overview-ubisoft-forward"] Operatives in Watch Dogs: Legion can be assigned to one of three classes:
  • Enforcer: Specializes in guns and dealing damage. Unique equipment is the sticky mine.
  • Hacker: Specializes in remote control. Unique equipment is a spider drone.
  • Infiltrator: Specializes in stealth and melee combat. Unique equipment is AR camo.
Each class has special perks that can be unlocked at levels 5, 10, and 15. For example, Hackers can unlock a perk called "Attract" that gives their spiderbot the ability to distract nearby enemies. Before recruiting an operative, you can check your phone and see what kind of traits they have. Traits can be beneficial to your team although some can come with potential risks. The trait "Bareknuckly Boxer" gives an operative 30+ melee damage but it also means they will never surrender if caught, putting them at a higher risk of being killed (if you turn on permadeath), arrested, or hospitalized. This is important to note since Watch Dogs: Legion has the option to turn on permadeath — meaning if you enable this feature and a character dies, they're gone for good. If you don't enable permadeath, they are instead hospitalized or arrested and unavailable for a certain amount of time. Recruiting operatives who are police officers, EMTs, or guards can help with getting back a timed-out operative sooner. Every single person in Watch Dogs: Legion is procedurally generated and recruitable. Recruiting them means convincing them to support Dedsec and this can be done by completing favors for that person. These actions can have a ripple effect, however. Each potential operative has their own backstory which includes their profession, the kind of demographics they are part of, and the relationships they have to other characters. If you do wrong by one character to get in another's good graces, this can impact who your opposition (and enemies) are further down the line. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/06/10/watch-dogs-legion-preview"] IGN's Janet Garcia said in her Watch Dogs: Legion hands on, "Making every character playable is a narrative risk, but it’s one Watch Dogs: Legion seems to pull off based on what I’ve played so far. Those who felt Marcus Holloway’s cutscene persona didn’t match his mid-mission murders may have a hard time buying into the idea of convincing anyone on the street to join what’s publicly viewed as a terrorist organization — favors aside." Watch Dogs: Legion will have both a single-player mode and an online co-op mode where players can play online with up to three friends to "take on entirely new co-op missions and challenging end-game content." For more on Legion's focus on personal privacy, take a look at our feature on how social media has shaped the Watch Dogs series. Oh, and unlike Watch Dogs 2, Legion will not actually have any dogs.

Editions

There are currently four different Watch Dogs: Legion editions available for preorder — the Standard Edition, Gold Steelbook Edition, Ultimate Edition, Collector's Edition. The Standard Edition is available for $60 and includes the base game and the Golden King Pack, which is a set of three skins. On the other hand, the Gold Steel Book Edition will cost $109 and comes with a steelbook case, the Golden King Pack, a season pass, and three days of early access before launch. Players can also preorder the Ultimate Edition which comes with everything the Gold Steelbook edition has, plus an Urban Jungle Pack and four weeks of VIP Status. The Watch Dogs: Legion Collector's Edition can be purchased for $189 and includes everything from the other editions, plus an in-game mask and some cool physical items like an exclusive steelbook, a double-sided propaganda poster, a mask, stickers, and a special Collector's Edition box. Check out our Watch Dogs: Legion preorder guide for more on the different editions and where you can get them. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Andrew Smith is a freelance contributor with IGN. New Goosebumps Live-Action TV Series in Development

Goosebumps is returning to television. Scholastic Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television announced Tuesday that they are collaborating on a new live-action series to be produced by Original Film's Neal H. Mortiz, who produced the two recent feature films. Goosebumps was previously produced as a horror anthology television series in the 1990s. The franchise, based on the bestselling book series by author R.L. Stine, later made the leap to the big screen with a pair of films featuring Jack Black as a fictionalized version of Stine. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-best-horror-tv-shows-on-netflix-right-now&captions=true"] “I loved making the Goosebumps movies and can’t wait to bring even more of R. L. Stine’s incredible stories to life through a high-end television series that speaks to both adults and kids alike,” Moritz said in a statement. No word yet on when production will begin. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/07/11/goosebumps-2-haunted-halloween-teaser-trailer"] In our positive review of 2015's Goosebumps, we said the film "does not require such generation-specific fandom in order to be enjoyed, and is in fact an all-inclusive monster romp that’s fun and spooky and just a little bit touching too." We were less enamored with its 2018 sequel, Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, which we deemed "in far too much of a hurry – and perhaps too eager to be widely accessible – to be actually scary or wholly effective." Deadline first broke the news of the new series.

V-Rally 4 and Warhammer 40k: Inquisitor – Martyr Lead May’s Games with Gold

Xbox has announced that V-Rally 4, Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor - Martyr, Sensible World of Soccer, and Overlord II will be May 2020's Games with Gold. Xbox Live Gold members will have exclusive access to these games, although the availability of each title varies throughout the month. V-Rally 4 will be available from May 1 - May 31 on Xbox One, Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor - Martyr from May 16 - June 15 on Xbox One, Sensible World of Soccer from May 1 - May 15 on Xbox One and Xbox 360, and Overlord II from May 16 - 31 on Xbox One and Xbox 360. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/04/28/xbox-may-2020-games-with-gold-trailer"] V-Rally 4 was released in 2018 and features over 50 famous and customizable vehicles that allow players to take on the "challenges of rallycross, drifts, buggies, and hill climbs." This title was the first V-Rally game since PlayStation 2's V-Rally 3 in 2002. Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor - Martyr stars the Imperium's most powerful agent and has you imposing the Emperor's will across the Warhammer universe. It features Diablo-like combat and supports up to four players. In our review, we said "Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor - Martyr gets a lot of things right, but drops the ball where it matters most for an action RPG." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/06/19/warhammer-40k-inquisitor-martyr-review"] Sensible World of Soccer was released in 2007 and features a "massive lineup of football clubs from around the world" and is a "classic reborn" of the 1994 title of the same name. In our review, we said "there’'s a reason Sensible World of Soccer is considered a sports classic. Unlike most sports games that feel dated and tired years later, this one holds up quite well. It’s simple and fast, removing two of the hurdles many people find with the sport of soccer." Overlord II was released in 2009 and puts you in the shoes of the evil villain. You get to control a Minion army in their battle against the Glorious Empire. In our review, we said "Overlord II is a sequel that is neither bigger nor better than its predecessor. The size and scope have been dialed back to something that is more akin to a straight action game. And since none of the frustrating elements of the first have been fixed -- namely the camera, control, and save structure -- this game just isn't much fun." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/09/06/v-rally-4-launch-trailer"] We still have a few days until May's Games with Gold become available, so be sure to jump on April's, which include Project CARS 2, the Knights of Pen and Paper Bundle and Toybox Turbos. Battlefield Game Coming in 2021, Star Wars: Battlefront 2 Updates to Stop

DICE has announced that the Battle on Scarif update will arrive for Star Wars: Battlefront 2 tomorrow, April 29, and will be the last regular content update for the game. EA also confirms that DICE will release a new Battlefield game in 2021. In a blog post, DICE creative director Dennis Brännvall explains that the game's 26th free content update will arrive tomorrow, and will be its final one. However, general support for the game will be ongoing: "Servers, in-game challenges, recurring events such as Double XP [...] and game support will carry this broad and rich Star Wars gaming experience into the future." It follows news that the June content update for Battlefield 5 will also be that game's last. In a statement to IGN, an EA spokesperson made clear that DICE will still be supporting both games: "The team at DICE is working on the standalone Battlefield V update releasing this summer, and continuing their work on delivering Community Games. While the studio’s vision for Star Wars Battlefront II is now complete with this week’s The Battle on Scarif Update, the servers, in-game challenges, recurring events and game support will continue as the game lives on with players and the community. We’re looking forward to hearing players’ stories for both games, for years to come." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-ign-star-wars-game-review&captions=true"] The statement closes by confirming that, after taking a year off from the franchise, we'll be getting a new DICE Battlefield game next year: "Longer term, the studio is focused on the future of Battlefield that we’ll be bringing to players in 2021." Previously, EA had said that a new Battlefield game will arrive between 2021 and 2022. It's not clear at this point if Battlefield 5 or Battlefront 2 will join the other EA games that have been made available on Steam. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/12/17/star-wars-battlefront-2-review-2019"] The Battle on Scarif update will not only add the tropical planet location from Rogue One to multiple modes, but will add new hero and villain looks primarily based on The Rise of Skywalker - Rey with a yellow lightsaber, Kylo Ren with his reforged mask, and a new version of Emperor Palpatine. Reaching 5,000 kills with Darth Maul will add his Old Master appearance (complete with mechanical legs), and "uncovering the mystery on Takodana" will earn you Rey's hooded look. The Age of Rebellion will also be made available in Supremacy and Instant Action, with battles on Hoth, Tatooine, Yavin 4, Death Star and Scarif. Battles in the Age of Rebellion Supremacy will take place purely in the ground phase, but you will be able to pilot starfighters in a selection of locations. Offline solo players will also gain access to the game's co-op modes, working with and against AI in all co-op locations. This will be an option in the Instant Action menu. After a difficult start to life, we re-reviewed Battlefront 2 last year, calling it "a great package now that serves as one of the best and most thrilling ways to have an authentic Star Wars gaming experience." Marvel’s Avengers: Release Date, Gameplay, and What We Know So Far

Updated 6/25 with new Marvel's Avenger story and gameplay details. The Marvel's Avengers game is set to launch in just a few months and fans of the Marvel Universe will soon be able to play as one of six playable heroes confirmed for it. Set five years after the events of A-Day, Marvel's Avengers follows Kamala Khan as she assembles a team to help her tackle a new threat. With a beta confirmed for later this year and the release date drawing near, now is a great time to catch up on what we know about Crystal Dynamic's Marvel's Avengers so far. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/24/marvels-avengers-summer-of-gaming-interview"]

Marvel's Avengers Release Date

The Marvel's Avengers release date is September 4, 2020 and will arrive on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia. Crystal Dynamics initially planned for a May 2020 release but elected to push back the date so developers could finish "fine-tuning and polishing the game." Marvel's Avengers has been teased by Square Enix since 2017 and was officially revealed at E3 2019. Those who preorder the game will get access to the beta and some other cool rewards. Check out our Marvel's Avengers preorder guide for more information.

Marvel's Avengers Story

Marvel's Avengers takes place five years after the cinematic trailer that was shown during E3 2019, where the Avengers are blamed for a tragedy involving Terrigen mists (a mutagen that transforms its victims into Inhumans) that struck the San Francisco Bay Area. After the event, dubbed "A-Day", superheroes are outlawed and the Avengers are officially disbanded. One of the victims of the Terrigen mists includes the co-founder of Advanced Idea Mechanics (or A.I.M.) George Tarleton, who eventually transforms into the game's main supervillain, MODOK. Utilizing the lingering resentment against the Avengers after A-Day to imprison Inhumans and "find a cure", Tarleton begins secretly using their powers to form an Adaptoid robot army with the goal of eliminating all superpowered peoples from the Earth. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/24/marvels-avengers-meet-modok"] A teenager named Kamala Khan (also known as Ms. Marvel) is another victim of the Terrigen mist who discovers her powers during a fight. She later finds evidence that reveals the true nature behind A.I.M.'s Inhuman "research" as well as the truth about Captain America's death, and brings the information to Bruce Banner who then informs Tony Stark. Eventually, the Avengers are forced to reassemble to confront the threat.

Marvel's Avengers Gameplay

Marvel's Avengers can be played as a single-player game or as an online co-op game where you can team up with three other players. There are also two types of missions in the game, Hero and Warzone missions. Hero missions are single-player only and part of the main campaign according to Crystal Dynamics' Studio Creative Head, Noah Hughes. Warzone missions, on the other hand, are less story focused and allow players to play as any Avenger they like, either by themselves or with friends. When playing co-op, heroes can work together to perform Team Finisher moves. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/24/marvels-avengers-co-op-war-zones-trailer"] Crystal Dynamics is focusing on player choice as far as Marvel's Avengers gameplay is concerned, allowing each hero's gear, skills, and outfits to be customized. We spoke with the developers to find out more about customizing hero moves in Marvel's Avengers and lead combat designer Vince Napoli told us, "All the support abilities also have a primary function for the main character as well." For example, Thor has an ability that strikes enemies with lightning but also strikes each Avenger, giving them a lightning shield and making them invincible for 12 seconds. These abilities can also be customized to suit specific needs. Napoli explained, "You can change the way that the god mode sort of works for Thor and you can turn him into a sort of a beacon of health where he’ll sort of channel health to nearby characters for the duration of his god mode." As players progress through the game, they'll be able to upgrade gear to make their heroes more powerful, similar to games like Destiny or Borderlands. However, gear upgrades will not be visible on a hero's suit, but will instead be "part of or underneath your suit" according to senior producer Rose Hunt. "We thought [players] would rather have the visuals that we're pulling from the comic books or the original suits that we're making up, rather than have a bunch of attachments on the outside of it making them look not as cool," said Hunt. "When you scale up or when you level up gear, there's definitely going to be some different visuals for VFX. Generally, it's going to feel like a celebration. It's also going to have probably some different animations at different times." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/24/marvels-avengers-thor-8-minute-gameplay-reveal"] As far as game length goes, Crystal Dynamics hasn't released an official statement on Marvel's Avengers playtime. However, senior brand director Rich Briggs suggested to Comicbook that quickly going through the main story might take around 10-12 hours, but a more in-depth playthrough could last up to 30 hours. In a clarifying statement to IGN, a Crystal Dynamics representative indicated the studio intends to support the game for "multiple years" with DLC and post-launch content. Further, Crystal Dynamics is calling Marvel Avengers the largest game in the history of its studio. IGN was able to go hands-on with it at Gamescom 2019, so be sure to check out our Marvel's Avengers first impressions, if you're interested. Additionally, we've rounded up a list of over 38 new details about the game.

Marvel's Avengers Characters

There are currently six heroes confirmed for Marvel's Avengers. You can see a list of all the characters below.
  • Iron Man
  • Thor
  • Black Widow
  • Captain America
  • Hulk
  • Kamala Khan
At the 2019 New York City Comic Con, Kamala Khan was introduced as the sixth playable character to join the elite squad of heroes. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/10/05/marvels-avengers-every-revealed-character-costume-and-finisher-in-4k"] It was also revealed that Kamala Khan's Ms. Marvel will be the main protagonist of Marvel's Avengers. Rose Hunt, Marvel’s Avengers senior producer told IGN that the team decided to focus on Ms. Marvel in part due to her lack of history in the Marvel universe, allowing the studio more freedom when crafting her story for the game. “Another advantage of her is that she doesn't have 80 years of history, like Captain America or some of the other Avengers,” said Hunt. “And that allows us to actually tell more of an original story with her, because her story has just begun, and we can build on that in very interesting ways.” Some fans were disappointed to see Hawkeye left off the list, after all, he is one of the core Avengers. While he hasn't been officially revealed at the time of writing, Marvel Games' Creative Director Bill Rosemann is telling fans to "stay tuned, true believer," suggesting Hawkeye may be joining the lineup at a later date. Various trailers and gameplay reveals have also indicated that Abomination and Taskmaster will show up in the game as villains. While there is little to no public information on these character's roles in the game, Taskmaster will be one of the villains in the upcoming Black Widow movie, which has been delayed due to the coronavirus. Game footage has also revealed that A.I.M. will be the main mastermind group behind the conspiracy uncovered by Kamala Khan. This group first appeared in Marvel comics in the 1960s and has since appeared in a variety of movies, shows, and even games. For more, check out our deep dive into the history of A.I.M. MODOK is confirmed to be the main supervillain in Marvel's Avengers. In addition to all this, Square Enix has announced that there will be characters added to the game post-launch, which will be free for all players. Be sure to check out our list of heroes we want to see added in the DLC.

Marvel's Avengers Beta

The Marvel's Avengers beta will be available to everyone who preorders the game. At the time of writing, the beta release date hasn't been announced yet and Square Enix is telling fans that more information will be provided at a later date. Additionally, those who preorder a copy on the PS4 will get access to the beta first. Anyone who preorders the Deluxe or Earth's Mightiest editions (any platform) of Marvel's Avengers will get access to the game on September 1, three days before its launch. However, preordering any edition of the Marvel's Avengers will grant you beta access when it becomes available. Hemsworth stars as Tyler Rake, a hardened mercenary whose mission becomes a soul-searching race to survive when he's sent into Bangladesh to rescue a drug lord's kidnapped son. Extraction also stars Rudhraksh Jaiswal and Randeep Hooda. Extraction marks the feature film directorial debut of Hargrave, who is best known for his work in stunt choreography. In addition to the MCU movies previously mentioned, Hargrave is the stunt coordinator behind Atomic Blonde, The Hunger Games and Deadpool 2, and before that was a stunt double for the likes of Hugh Jackman in The Wolverine and Chris Evans in The Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. That's why it should be no surprise that Hargrave knows how to take the action in Extraction to the next level. Switch Game Released Without Devs’ Knowledge and Lacking Features

The Nintendo Switch version of RPG platformer Indivisible launched today, and developer Lab Zero Games had absolutely no idea. Furthermore, the Switch port has been released missing co-op and new game plus modes, as well as other recent additions. Posting on Twitter, Lab Zero Games’ Mike Zaimont said “our team found out because people on Twitter sent us congratulations! I had no idea!” He went on to say that the Switch version is great and running at a stable framerate, but it appears that the old build of the game has been added to the Nintendo eShop, rather than the current version. In addition, the store page features the wrong artwork, and appeared with no PR lead up or release date announcement. “This launch does not represent the quality standards of Lab Zero,” said Zaimont. “It just doesn't. I'm sorry. It wasn't us.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/10/07/the-first-15-minutes-of-indivisible"] It’s likely that the situation is due to Indivisible’s publisher, 505 Games. We’ve reached out to both Lab Zero Games and 505 Games for further comment. Indivisible has landed on Switch with a 20% discount, and if it looks like your kind of thing then you should give it a try. Our glowing review of the original PC version called it “one of the most wildly creative RPGs of the year”. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Matt Purslow is IGN's UK News and Entertainment Writer. Destroy All Humans! Remake: July Release Date Revealed

The release date for Black Forest Games' Destroy All Humans! remake has been revealed, with the game launching on July 28th, 2020. The remake was revealed back in June 2019 and will land on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Google Stadia at launch. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/04/28/destroy-all-humans-release-date-trailer"] Destroy All Humans! is a remake of the 2005 cult classic developed by the now-defunct Pandemic and follows Crypto, a smack-talking alien who terrorizes a 1950s township, claiming the precious brain stems of the human populace. The game released on PS2 and Xbox and was a hit with fans for its irreverent humour and chaotic gameplay, which has been reimagined for current-gen consoles. The game will retail at €29.99 / $29.99 / £24.99 on PC and €39.99 / $39.99 / £34.99 on consoles. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/06/21/destroy-all-humans-remake-preview"] Those who pre-order the game will also receive a set of skins that are debuted in the trailer, including one that dons Crypto in a white bodysuit that is clearly a homage to Memphis crooner Elvis Presley. For more on Destroy All Humans, check out our preview of the game from PAX East. If you're really keen on the remake, come get a closer look at the insane $399.99 collector's edition that comes with a Crypto backpack, a 60 cm tall figurine and a Crypto-shaped stress toy which may relieve your worries after such a bold purchase.
