New Green Hornet and Kato Movie in Development
Despite a 2011 film starring Seth Rogen that proved a commercial and critical disappointment, Hollywood is trying to bring old school superhero The Green Hornet back to the big screen one more time.
Universal Pictures and Amasia Entertainment have teamed to develop a new feature film project titled The Green Hornet and Kato. Kato, you may recall, began as Green Hornet's sidekick before later incarnations of the story gave the martial artist the respect he deserved and made him a true crime-fighting equal of Green Hornet.
“The Green Hornet is one of the most iconic and beloved superhero tales ever created, and it has entertained generations of fans in every form of storytelling," Universal announced Thursday, saying they are "thrilled" to "launch an exciting new cinematic world for Britt Reid, Kato, and the Black Beauty, and we can’t wait to share it with global audiences soon.”
[ignvideo width=610 height=374 url=https://www.ign.com/videos/2010/11/24/the-green-hornet-trailer-2]
“Universal will be a great home for our new Green Hornet and Kato. The team at Universal shares our passion & enthusiasm for the property and will devote the resources to launch a truly global franchise," said Amasia co-founder Michael Helfant. "And, it’s very cool that Universal was the original distributor of the 1940’s movie serials. Our goal is to make a film that existing fans will love, and new fans will love to discover. With Universal, it feels like we are merging the past and the future, creating a contemporary version of the franchise that is fresh and exciting while respecting its long legacy and history. I can’t wait!”
The Green Hornet, aka publisher Britt Reid, is a classic hero of pulp fiction, radio, film serials, and TV. Alongside Kato, he patrolled the streets in his tricked-out car, the Black Beauty.
Bruce Lee portrayed Kato in the 1960s Green Hornet TV series opposite Van Williams, which famously saw them cross-over with Adam West's Batman. (Kato and Burt Ward's Robin fought to a draw because the martial arts master Lee refused to lose to the Boy Wonder.)

Michel Gondry directed the 2011 film, which starred Rogen, Jay Chou as Kato, Cameron Diaz, and Christoph Waltz. That project, released by Sony, had a very long gestation in development hell, going through numerous studios (including Universal), filmmakers (Kevin Smith), and actors (George Clooney, Jet Li, Jake Gyllenhaal) before Gondry brought it to the screen as an action-comedy.
In our review of Gondry's film, we wrote: "While it may not ultimately prove memorable enough to launch a new film franchise, The Green Hornet is still a fun action-comedy and clever superhero satire that's about as close to a cool summer movie as you're going to get in the dead of winter."

Brian Dennehy, Rambo Villain and Tommy Boy’s Dad, Dies at 81
Brian Dennehy, the burly character actor who was Rambo's adversary in the original First Blood and Chris Farley's doting dad in Tommy Boy, has died at the age of 81.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dennehy died at his home in Connecticut on April 15 of natural causes.
His daughter Elizabeth paid tribute to him on Twitter: "It is with heavy hearts we announce that our father, Brian passed away last night from natural causes, not Covid-related. Larger than life, generous to a fault, a proud and devoted father and grandfather, he will be missed by his wife Jennifer, family and many friends."

With his large frame and tough guy bearing, Dennehy was a natural for authority figures, with his turn as the relentless Sheriff Teasle in the original Rambo film, First Blood, launching him to greater notoriety.
But Dennehy, a former football player, also lent his characters a blue collar authenticity and could play sympathetic figures, such as the dad in Tommy Boy and Django, the leader of the rats, in Pixar's Ratatouille.
The veteran actor appeared in a slew of films from the 1970s to the 2000s, including Cocoon, Presumed Innocent, Silverado, F/X, Best Seller, 10, and the remake of Assault on Precinct 13.

Dennehy's television work saw him portray serial killer John Wayne Gacy in 1992's To Catch a Killer, Indiana Hoosiers coach Bobby Knight in 2002's A Season on the Brink, and detective Jack Reed in a number of TV movies. He also portrayed Dom Wilkinson on The Blacklist.
Dennehy was also an acclaimed stage actor, winning Tonys for his portrayal of Wily Loman in a revival of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman and for Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night.

Cyberpunk 2077 Xbox One Controller Leaked
Microsoft is teasing something related to Cyberpunk 2077, but it’s most likely the Cyberpunk 2077-themed Xbox One controller that was leaked earlier this week on Amazon Canada.
A new teaser appeared today on the official Xbox Twitter account with a familiar glitch-aesthetic and font design to CD Projekt Red’s upcoming cyberpunk RPG. If you go to the Xbox website, a cold animation takes over the screen telling visitors to come back in four days for a new reveal.
Unfortunately, that reveal may have been spoiled a bit early by Amazon Canada which posted multiple pictures of a Cyberpunk 2077-themed Xbox One controller. The two-tone controller features Johnny Silverhand’s color scheme of chrome silver and matte black. There are also the words “No Future” scrawled onto one side of the controller, so that’s neat.

Dune: Jason Momoa Reveals Details About His ‘Han Solo-Esque’ Character
Jason Momoa has shared new details about his role in Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi novel Dune, saying his character Duncan Idaho is "kind of the Han Solo-esque of the group."
Appearing on a recent lockdown edition of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Momoa provided some background information about his character for those who might be unfamiliar with the original source material and the sprawling mythology.

"I get to play this character Duncan Idaho, who's kind of a master swordsman who's made the right-hand man to Duke Leto, who is Oscar Isaac's [character]," he explained. "He's the first person to be sent out to land on Dune, and that's when I meet the character that Javier Bardem plays. I can't believe I had a scene with Javier Bardem! It's him and Timothée Chalamet, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson and Stellan Skarsgård. It's a pretty massive film and I get to be this little—he's kind of the Han Solo-esque of the group. He's kind of the rogue warrior who protects Timothée Chalamet and he serves Oscar Isaac."
Momoa is the latest in a long line of actors who have shown their skills as the renowned swordmaster, who was introduced in the first novel of Herbert's seminal series and has been brought to life on the screen many times since. Idaho was initially portrayed by Richard Jordan in David Lynch's cinematic version of Dune in 1984, and then by James Watson in the 2000 Sci-Fi Channel miniseries. Edward Atterton later assumed the role, playing the character for a short run on the 2003 Children of Dune miniseries, which won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Visual Effects.

Villeneuve's reboot is the first of a planned duology adapting the original book, which chronicles the struggle between warring houses in a distant future where a psychotropic spice known as Melange is the most coveted resource in the universe.
The film has an ensemble cast of Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem.

Top Gun: Maverick Director Says Film Will Be Finished on Time Despite 6-Month Delay
Director Joseph Kosinski has confirmed that Top Gun: Maverick will be completed on time for its original June release date, even though it has been rescheduled for December due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Kosinski shared an update on his highly anticipated Top Gun sequel, in which he explained that lockdown restrictions and social distancing measures have not hindered his progress on the project and that he is now on the "home stretch" in post-production.
[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/12/16/top-gun-maverick-official-trailer-2"]
"We are sticking to our schedule and finishing the movie just as if it were coming out on its original release date," Kosinski said. "Luckily, I'm in the home stretch of post-production where, despite all the restrictions on how you can work now, I'm able to continue doing my job and finish the movie, which is pretty amazing. If I were in any other phase of the project, it would be hard to do that. But because I'm in the tail end of post, I'm able to do everything I need to, to finish it.
"So we're sticking to it and sticking to our schedule and finishing the movie and then just holding it for six months. Which is such an interesting thing to do, but it's the right decision because this is a movie that people need to see on the big screen. And if there's no big screen, then you don't want to release this movie. We want this to be a shared experience on the biggest screen possible."

With so many cinema chains closed around the world, film studios have been making the call on whether to postpone the release of their upcoming titles or shift some of their features to VOD (video on demand); Paramount Pictures opted to pushback the release of Top Gun: Maverick from June 24 to December 23.
Fans have been waiting for Tom Cruise to return as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell for almost 35 years, so an extra six months should fly by in a flash. Plus, something tells us that it will be worth the wait, as we predict it could be quite a big hit at the box office, given the fan reaction to the first trailer that dropped at SDCC last year.
