GameStop to Close All Storefronts to Comply with U.S. Coronavirus Regulations

Starting March 22, all GameStop stores located in the United States will "temporarily stop customer access to storefronts, processing orders on a digital only basis, moving to curbside pick-up at stores and eCommerce delivery only," the company said in a statement on Saturday. This news comes only a day after IGN originally reported that GameStop decided to close all California stores, following increased public scrutiny over their decision to consider themselves an "essential" business due to their selling of tech hardware like keyboards and webcams. In a statement, the company said that the move to strictly curbside pickup and digital sales will allow them to still serve customers who have made orders on GameStop's website or app and have requested a physical product pick-up at their local store. In the statement, GameStop CEO George Sherman elaborates on the company's position on COVID-19 public health regulations, which contrast sharply with what some GameStop employees have told IGN. "Our priority has been and continues to be on the well-being of our employees, customers and business partners" Sherman stated. "We have been steadfast in our adherence to CDC-guided safety and local government orders for retailers in each of our communities." GameStop's statement also says that the company has assured employees that they do not have to work if they are uncomfortable with it and should stay home if they feel sick. GameStop adds that they will "pay all U.S. employees whose hours have been eliminated an additional two weeks at their regular pay rate based on the average hours worked in the last 10 weeks" and that GameStop will reimburse all benefits-eligible employees their portion of benefit expenses. Sherman's statement contrasts sharply with what some GameStop employees have told IGN, with one employee saying: "“GameStop corporate is putting its employees at risk of COVID-19. They aren’t closing stores and they aren’t offering paid time off. They are still pushing their employees to advertise events at their stores that will draw crowds of people.” Later, another GameStop employee who works in a city that recently issued orders to close all non-essential businesses reached out to IGN to express their own concerns. “We are not getting cleaning supplies. But GameStop is still telling its guests we are getting them and cleaning high traffic surfaces,” the anonymous employee said. In recent years, with video game purchases increasingly going digital, GameStop has long suffered to compete. The result has largely been overworked employees who are subjected to high levels of stress, and pressure from leadership on various levels to increase pre-order, trade-in, and phone purchases. The company has come up with increasingly elaborate ways to reinvent its image and attract a larger, more dedicated customer base, like redesigning some storefronts to be more social experiences, with couch co-op stations, tabletop gaming areas, retro gaming attractions, and stores with a greater focus on physical collectibles. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/07/how-gamestop-plans-to-save-itself"] GameStop closed its statement by saying it will provide more details about its operations when it reports its fourth quarter and fiscal year 2019 results on March 26. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=gamestop-in-the-news-timeline&captions=true"] In the state of California, a recent order from Governor Gavin Newsom appeared to tighten restrictions on what could be deemed "essential services," trimming it down to absolute necessities like food and supplies, which California GameStop stores to comply. GameStop also previously canceled midnight release event plans for Doom Eternal and Animal Crossing in order to curb close contact between individuals.

Netflix Creates Coronavirus Relief Fund for Entertainment Industry

In an effort to aid crew members in the entertainment industry who've been out of work due to delayed or cancelled productions, streaming giant Netflix has set up a fund for those who are unable to earn a living while Hollywood is on hold. Per Variety, the $100 million relief fund is meant to help the approximately 120,000 crew members who have lost their jobs over the past few weeks. Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos relayed, in a statement, “The COVID-19 crisis is devastating for many industries, including the creative community. Almost all television and film production has now ceased globally — leaving hundreds of thousands of crew and cast without jobs." “These include electricians, carpenters and drivers, many of whom are paid hourly wages and work on a project-to-project basis," he added. "This community has supported Netflix through the good times, and we want to help them through these hard times, especially while governments are still figuring out what economic support they will provide.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/20/disney-and-pixars-onward-to-be-released-on-demand-tonight-and-disney-on-april-3-ign-news"] Reportedly, $15 million of the fund "will go to third parties and non-profits that offer emergency relief to out-of-work crew and cast in countries where there’s a large production base." Netflix stated, of that $15 million, it will "donate $1 million each to the SAG-AFTRA COVID-19 Disaster Fund, the Motion Picture & Television Fund, and the Actors Fund Emergency Assistance in the U.S., as well as $1 million between the AFC and Fondation des Artistes." Meanwhile, director Christopher Nolan has written an op-ed piece calling for cooperative aid to help save movie theaters chains and their workers. Celebrities have also been finding a way, in these unprecedented times, to entertain fans at home. This include's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse's Jake Johnson leaving voicemails for restless kids as Peter B. Parker. Sony Pulls Mario Creation From Dreams After Nintendo Complaint

Sony is reportedly pulling a Super Mario creation from Dreams after Nintendo issued a complaint, according to a report from GoNintendo (via Eurogamer).

Dreams player PieceOfCraft took to Twitter to talk about their creation getting pulled from the game, alleging their Super Mario model (which is available for other players to use in their own Dreams creations) was taken down. PieceOfCraft also stated that they received an email from Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe that said Nintendo had issued a complaint about their intellectual property being used in a Sony game. PieceOfCraft's Mario model can be seen being used in other user creations. It's unclear if those creations have been impacted by Sony's decision to remove it.

PieceOfCraft followed up again by saying that they can no longer edit the Mario creation as it’s been marked as “removed” due to copyright material.

 [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/20/13-amazing-remakes-in-dreams"]

“I can remix it but the original I can no longer edit and [others] will not find or be able to use. Not too sure what will happen to levels that used the Mario. [I guess] we'll have to wait and see. Its [kind of] like a slap on the wrist.”

Business attorney Richard Hoeg (of Hoeg Law and Virtual Legality) notes that this isn’t an entirely unexpected development, given Media Molecule’s past with LittleBigPlanet, but the terms of service agreement appears to cover Sony on issues like this.

“Anyone that has played Dreams is well aware of the amount of content that is "inspired" by some of the most beloved games of all time,” Hoeg told IGN. “And anyone that played its predecessor, LittleBigPlanet knew that folks would be making all sorts of things owned by others….So what you see on the game is essentially people making what they love and (most) content creators looking the other way.  This isn't that unusual a state of affairs as much of the fan art, fan games, streaming scene could be argued to live on the same basis of IP Holder largesse.”

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/17/7-retro-games-recreated-in-dreams"]

Hoeg adds that it’s equally expected to see Nintendo go after content like what PieceOfCraft created, given its lengthy history of copyright lawsuits. That includes a lawsuit against a ROM site that hosted emulations of older Nintendo games. That lawsuit resulted in Nintendo being awarded more than $12 million, although the couple who ran both sites later entered settlement negotiations, so the total penalty might have changed. Nintendo also previously won a legal battle against an unlicensed Mario Kart go-kart company in Tokyo.

Hoeg also adds that Media Molecule’s recent explorations of how Dreams creations could be used outside of Dreams could have spurred companies like Nintendo to start taking a harder look at protecting their property.

“Nintendo is well within its legal rights here, but that doesn't necessarily make it a good business decision," Hoeg said. "Different companies are going to have different tolerances for the use of their property by others (even if infringing) and I think many game companies have essentially decided that use of their IP in streams, art, and places like Dreams ultimately serves more as positive marketing than anything else.  So I'm not sure how many we will see follow Nintendo's path here.”

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/10/avatar-the-last-airbender-game-made-in-dreams"]

All that hasn’t stopped creators from using Dreams to keep making admittedly interesting homages or outright recreations of popular games and other IPs. You can check out all of those on our Dreams hub page, including the absolutely ridiculous Avatar: The Last Airbender fan game.

Christopher Nolan Writes Op-Ed About the Importance of Saving Movie Theaters

Christopher Nolan, director of The Dark Knight and Dunkirk, and a fervent advocate of the movie theater-going experience, has penned a piece for The Washington Post, calling for government, studio, and societal support of movie theaters as crowd-heavy businesses both big and small go dark during the coronavirus crisis. In an op-ed titled "Movie theaters are a vital part of American social life. They will need our help," Nolan writes “When people think about movies, their minds first go to the stars, the studios, the glamour. But the movie business is about everybody: the people working the concession stands, running the equipment, taking tickets, booking movies, selling advertising and cleaning bathrooms in local theaters.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/12/19/tenet-official-trailer"] In this time of "unprecedented challenge and uncertainty," Nolan calls on Congress, when considering monetary aid sent out to support shuttered businesses, to see "our community for what it really is: a vital part of social life, providing jobs for many and entertainment for all. These are places of joyful mingling where workers serve up stories and treats to the crowds that come to enjoy an evening out with friends and family. As a filmmaker, my work can never be complete without those workers and the audiences they welcome." Nolan concludes with “When this crisis passes, the need for collective human engagement, the need to live and love and laugh and cry together, will be more powerful than ever. We need what movies can offer us. Maybe, like me, you thought you were going to the movies for surround sound, or Goobers, or soda and popcorn, or movie stars. But we weren’t. We were there for each other." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=tenet-cast&captions=true"] Unlike the many Spring movies that have been delayed due to COVID-19, Nolan's Tenet, starring John David Washington and Robert Pattinson, is still set to come out on July 17. For more on Tenet, be sure to read our thorough breakdown of everything in the as-yet-unreleased trailer. You Have to See These Hilarious WrestleMania 36 Shirts

With WWE moving WrestleMania 36 from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida to the company's Performance Center in Orlando -- and the event being changed to a fan-less two-night PPV -- a couple of new shirts available at their online store are having a bit of fun with the unenviable situation. Two tees over at WWE Shop are taking a tongue-in-cheek approach to "event only exclusive" shirts WWE usually sells at major PPVs. Instead of the traditional "I Was There," these threads proudly display "I Wasn't There." Take a look... Screen Shot 2020-03-21 at 10.42.40 AM Screen Shot 2020-03-21 at 10.42.31 AM As you can see, WWE is trying to make the best of a brutal situation. Hopefully their mirth will pay off. Also, hopefully 'Mania 36 will still be pirate-themed. Check out how the matches for WrestleMania 36 will be divided between two nights. In other entertainment news, Paramount's The Lovebirds, starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, is now bypassing theaters and heading to Netflix. Plus, Disney has released Pixar's Onward to on-demand and the movie is coming to Disney+ on April 3. Warner Bros' Birds of Prey is coming to on-demand on March 24 and Universal is releasing Trolls World Tour on-demand on April 10, the movie's original theatrical date. This past week, WWE announced that, instead of cancelling or postponing WrestleMania 36 in Tampa, they were moving the annual mega-event to their own Performance Center in Orlando, with no fans in the stands. The Walking Dead: World Beyond Postponed

The latest coronavirus-related delay in the entertainment world comes to us from The Walking Dead universe, which already had to halt production on Fear the Walking Dead's sixth season. The Walking Dead's second spinoff, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, has now been pushed back to later this year, to a date yet to be determined. The Walking Dead: World Beyond has actually wrapped shooting, but still needs to complete post-production on a few more episodes and that process has been impacted by fears of spreading COVID-19. So, like FX's Fargo: Season 4, its April airdate is being changed. World Beyond was set to start on Sunday, April 12 at 10 PM ET right after the Season 10 finale of The Walking Dead. The first season (of this two-season limited series) consists of 10 episodes. World Beyond centers on a group of teens, who are the first generation to grow up in a zompocalypse, venturing out of their safe and walled community to find a missing scientist. It stars Alexa Mansour, Nicolas Cantu, Hal Cumpston, Aliyah Royale, Annet Mahendru, and Nico Tortorella. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/11/25/the-walking-dead-world-beyond-trailer"] For those "social distancing," here are 12 movies that are being released to VOD early. You can also check out all the movies, and productions, that have been delayed due to the outbreak. GameStop Decides To Close California Stores

GameStop stores will close in California where the governor of the state enacted a full lockdown policy, according to the video game retailer. The news arrives a day after GameStop told stores to remain open and should consider themselves “essential” businesses because of its supply of tech hardware like keyboards and webcams. GameStop confirmed to IGN that stores in California have been closed to comply with the state’s full lockdown mandate (as reported by Kotaku). The order from Gov. Gavin Newsom requires all of the state’s residents to stay at home except for essential activities such as grocery shopping, work, or travel. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=gamestop-in-the-news-timeline&captions=true"] One GameStop employee told IGN under conditions of anonymity that the order to close California stores came down this morning. GameStop did not comment on whether this order would expand to other states like New York which issued similar lockdown orders. The retailer was expected to remain open and told stores to continue operating as they should be considered essential businesses. In a statement to IGN yesterday, the company said that the company offers “a wide array of products and devices that are important to facilitate remote work, distance learning, and virtual connectivity.” This includes webcams and microphones, items that businesses like IGN do indeed require for remote work. But the order from California’s governor appears to tighten that classification to necessities like food and supplies. GameStop stores that remain open have implemented social distancing practices such as only allowing 10 customers in at a time, and canceling midnight launches for major game releases for the foreseeable future. Spider-Man Voice Actor Wants to Cheer Up Bored Kids Stuck at Home

If your children are bored at home, the voice of Peter B. Parker from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will send them a quick message of encouragement to brighten their day. Jake Johnson, who voiced the version of Peter Parker who fought alongside Miles Morales for most of the movie, mentioned in an Instagram post how he had been asked by several parents to send encouraging messages to kids. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=new-movies-coming-to-vod-early&captions=true"] "Since the quarantine, a lot of parents have DM'd me saying they've been watching Spiderverse with their kids," Johnson said in. "So , here's my idea. If your child is home from school and wants a quick encouraging message from Peter B Parker, then send me an email with their name and I'll try and send over a short voice note." "If I don't get to you, I apologize," Johnson continued. "Email here if you wanna try this: peterbparkersayshi@gmail.com." Sony's Into the Spider-Verse was released in 2018 and its many iterations of Spider-Man quickly grew to be fan favorites, including Jake Johnson's Peter B. Parker. The entire arc of this Peter Parker focused on a down-in-the-dumps Spider-Man relearning what it means to be a hero and why it's important to be a hero, and now, your child could receive a personalized message from Spider-Man himself. Johnson's post has thousands of likes and, at the time of this writing, 2924 comments with parents thanking him for doing this and requests to hear back from some of Johnson's other famous characters, like Nick Miller from New Girl. Paramount Shifts The Lovebirds Release to Netflix

Paramount Pictures will no longer release The Lovebirds, starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, as originally planned and has placed the film with Netflix instead. The Lovebirds was due out in theaters on April 3, but after theaters around the world have closed their doors in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the movie's studio, Paramount, pulled the movie from theaters. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it's not known at this time when The Lovebirds is set to debut on Netflix. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=new-movies-coming-to-vod-early&captions=true"] Paramount has sent its movies to Netflix before, namely 2018's Annihilation (internationally) and The Cloverfield Paradox, but in those instances, it wasn't due to an ongoing pandemic or theater closings. While The Lovebirds is unique in that it's heading to Netflix, it's not the first movie to see an early release to homes around the world as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. Paramount announced on Friday, March 20, that Sonic would be getting an early digital release on March 31. The studio has already pulled its theatrical releases for A Quiet Place II and Blue Story. [ignvideo width=610 height=374 url=https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/01/16/the-lovebirds-official-trailer-1] Disney is releasing Pixar's Onward on-demand tonight and the movie is coming to Disney+ on April 3. In a world void of COVID-19, Onward would likely have still been in theaters on April 3. Warner Bros' Birds of Prey is coming to on-demand on March 24 and Universal is releasing Trolls World Tour on-demand on April 10, the movie's original theatrical date. The company has already put The Invisible Man, Emma, and The Hunt on-demand.
