Hideo Kojima to Receive BAFTA’s Highest Honour

Metal Gear and Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima will be given the Fellowship at the BAFTA Game Awards on April 2, 2020.

The Fellowship is the highest award given by BAFTA to an individual. It recognises and celebrates a person's creative contributions to film, television, or games. Those in the game industry who have received a Fellowship previously include Tim Schafer, John Carmack, Gabe Newell, Peter Molyneux, Will Wright, and Shigeru Miyamoto.

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/12/12/death-stranding-mind-of-kojima-video"]

On hearing the news, Kojima said: "Thank you very much for this precious BAFTA Fellowship award. I am very honored, and would like to take this moment to reflect on the many predecessors that came before me, as I deeply respect their contributions to entertainment, whether in movies, television, or games. I would also like to thank those who have supported me over the years and I will continue my commitment to creating new and innovative ways that will push the world of ‘play’ entertainment forward."

Kojima's first big breakthrough in games came in 1987, when he designed Metal Gear at Konami, which contributed greatly to the stealth genre. He went on to make games with distinctly cinematic presentations, such as Snatcher and Policenauts, which are influenced by his love of movies.

He also has a passion for mecha, as seen throughout his Metal Gear and Zone of the Enders series. Kojima left Konami in 2015 after nearly 30 years at the company to create his own studio, Kojima Productions, which so far has produced one game, Death Stranding.

In November 2019, Kojima was awarded with two Guinness World Records for being the game developer with the most fans on Instagram and Twitter. He is now working on his next project with his team at Kojima Productions. It is likely to be a game, perhaps even Death Stranding 2, however, Kojima has said he would also like to make films in the future.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Leaked Screenshots Look More Impressive Than Expected

A set of Baldur’s Gate 3 screenshots have leaked, revealing not just what the game looks like, but also a much more graphically impressive project than first expected. The screenshots, posted to Imgur just hours ahead of the Baldur’s Gate 3 first gameplay reveal at PAX East, shows an isometric RPG in a similar style to developer Larian Studios’ previous project, Divinity: Original Sin 2. Naturally, this perspective also links it to the original two Baldur’s Gate games, which were both isometric in perspective. However, it appears that the game also has third-person perspective segments. Dialogue with other characters is shown at a scale akin to The Witcher or Dragon Age, with very impressively drawn character models that are notably more detailed than what we'd expect from an isometric game. There are also what appear to be stills taken from cutscenes, also shown from a similar third-person perspective. While Divinity: Original Sin 2 was graphically impressive for an isometric RPG, it appears that Larian has striven for something more ‘AAA’ in appearance for Baldur’s Gate 3. It’s unclear if the Divinity engine is being used, but small indicators such as the same fonts suggest that it may be a heavily upgraded version of that tech. Beyond being graphically impressive, the screenshots also provides hints to the gameplay design, which seems very much within the lineage of the Divinity: Original Sin games. The HUD contains a bottom hotbar with quick access to a variety of what look like abilities, spells, and items. There are also the traditional party portraits, which appear to display icons above them. It’s unclear what those icons represent, but they look like they could symbolise queued actions rather than status effects. The environments on show are classic Forgotten Realms fare, with tombs, foreboding forests, fire-lit dungeons, and lush woodlands. Within the snippets of conversation shown by the subtitles there’s talk of the Mind Flayers - the C’thulu like horrors shown in the announcement trailer - as well as an indicator that your character’s traits can affect the responses you can provide (one answer is marked ELF, suggesting only an elvish character can say it). The responses are also, unusually, written akin to a character retelling their adventures, rather than just a written out variant of what your character can say. For example, in a scene with a demonic-like character, the options include “This man was a devil! I drew my weapon” and “I told the hell spawn to cut to the chase. What did he want?” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/06/06/baldurs-gate-3-announcement-teaser-uncut"] The Baldur’s Gate 3 gameplay reveal takes place at PAX East today at 12pm PT / 3pm ET / 8pm UK, so there's not long to wait until we can see more of this in gameplay form. You can watch the reveal live on our YouTube channel. Dungeons & Dragons owner Hasbro announced that Baldur’s Gate 3 will be available in early access later this year. Astronomer Discovers Mini-Moon Orbiting Earth

Earth has captured an asteroid that's spending time in space acting as a mini-moon, or baby moon, to our planet. The International Astronomical Union named the asteroid spinning around Earth a temporary captured object and, for the time being, it's acting like a tinier version of our moon. Astronomers discovered this mini-moon on February 15 using the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona, and ten days later,  the IAU filed it as 2020 CD3. "Orbit integrations...indicate that this object is temporarily bound to the Earth," the IAU filing reads. "No evidence of perturbations due to solar radiation pressure is seen, and no link to a known artificial object has been found. Further observations and dynamical studies are strongly encouraged." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-25-best-sci-fi-movies&captions=true"] You read that right: no link to artificial objects has been found meaning this is likely a straggler space rock hurtling through the solar system, and not a gift from aliens or smugglers in space. We also know it doesn't belong to Elon Musk because he said so on Twitter shortly after the announcement. Astronomer Kacper Wierzchos shared the news on Twitter, explaining a bit more about 2020 CD3. Wierzchos expanded on his first tweet, explaining that 2020 CD3 has actually been in Earth's orbit for three years. The mini-moon has a diameter between 1.9 meters and 3.5 meters based on his assumption that it's a C-type asteroid albedo. "But it's a big deal as out of ~1 million known asteroids, this is just the second asteroid to orbit Earth," Wierzchos said. The first asteroid to orbit earth was 2006 RH120. This asteroid completed a few trips around Earth from 2006 to 2007 before it left the planet's orbit and continued on elsewhere in the solar system. As the discovery is still somewhat new, not much is known of the object, although we imagine astronomers like Wierzchos and NASA will have their eyes glued to while it remains in orbit. Microsoft Edge Adds SkiiFree-like Surf Game Directly Into the Browser

If you were around for SkiFree, a Microsoft-created video game released in 1991 for the company’s Entertainment Pack 3, you probably enjoyed the surfing Easter egg the company hid in its Edge browser last year. Microsoft has now made the SkiFree-like surfing game an offline Edge browser game. Last year to promote the unveiling of a new Edge browser logo Microsoft developers hid a surfing game heavily reminiscent of SkiFree. Microsoft employees hid the game and only users who deciphered their clues via puzzles and secret images were able to play the game. But now that game will be available to anyone on the Edge browser. Edge users can find the game at edge://surf. The new version now supports three new modes including a time trial, support for keyboard, mouse, touch, or gamepad, and local high scores. Check out the game in action in the tweet below. There’s no online functionality, but as a nice little Easter egg that’s available whenever you’re bored, it’s not a bad experience. The surfing game was added as part of a new developer build for Microsoft Edge such as a Share button, and other more browser-specific features that aren’t related to the fun surf game. Check it out if you’re running the latest version of Edge. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Matt Kim is a reporter for IGN.

Move Over Luke Skywalker, Iron Man’s ‘Real’ Father Is [SPOILER]

If you haven't been following Marvel's Iron Man comics in recent years, you could be forgiven for thinking Howard Stark is Tony's biological father. The truth is much more complicated, and that story has just taken another strange turn. Read on to find out which Marvel character is claiming to be Tony Stark's father now, but beware of spoilers for The Avengers #31! [poilib element="accentDivider"] [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-top-25-marvel-villains &captions=true"] To quickly recap Tony Stark's convoluted family history, Tony first discovered he was adopted in in 2013's Iron Man #17. His adoptive brother Arno is the biological son of Howard and Maria Stark, but the Starks adopted Tony as a cover after Arno's health deteriorated as an infant. The identities of Tony's biological parents weren't revealed for several more years. 2016's International Iron Man #5 introduced Tony's birth mother, British radio DJ Amanda Armstrong. The following issue revealed the identity of his birth father, a SHIELD agent code-named Jude. Jude turned out to be a Hydra mole, forcing Amanda to kill him in self-defense and give her baby up for adoption. Now things are becoming even more complicated in the pages of The Avengers. After discovering a million-year-old Iron Man helmet buried in a cave, Tony is dragged back to the year 1,000,000 BC to meet Odin's team of prehistoric Avengers. These Avengers refuse to assist Iron Man in returning to the present, alluding to a forthcoming conflict involving every single Iron Man from across the Marvel multiverse. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/01/17/iron-man-vr-is-the-latest-delayed-game-of-2020"] Instead, Tony is forced to hide in a cave and try to keep his damaged armor working long enough to fend off curious cavemen and find a way home. Ironically, it was Tony's own helmet he discovered in the year 2020. He's soon visited by even stranger sights, including a Gorgilla wielding the Power Stone and a talking snake claiming to be his father. As he fights to stay alive, Tony flashes back to his childhood, remembering a time when he stumbled across his father Howard overseeing some sort of Satanic ritual. After forging a crude Iron Man armor from ice and leftover scraps, Tony is confronted by more talking snakes and Howard Stark himself, again clad in Satanic robes. Following a brief battle, "Howard" reveals himself to be none other than the demon lord Mephisto, come to claim Tony's soul just as he once stole Spider-Man's marriage. (Image Credit: Marvel Comics)[/caption] Mephisto again implies he's Tony's true father and that the real Howard sold his son's soul long ago. Tony refuses the offer to become Mephisto's "Devil in Iron." Instead, he realizes Mephisto is carrying the Time Stone and blasts it with his gauntlet, sparking a reaction that drags him forward through time. Tony is bombarded by visions of the hellish future from writer Jason Aaron's King Thor miniseries before finally returning to the present. Tony immediately travels to Las Vegas to confirm the present-day Mephisto is still imprisoned and to let the demon lord know he failed in his efforts to lure Iron Man to the dark side. Mephisto, however, is pleased with how his plot is unfolding. He's sown the seeds of doubt in Iron Man's mind, and he has a secret weapon - his faithful servant Howard Stark. [caption id="attachment_2309867" align="aligncenter" width="920"]Art by Mattia De Iulis. (Image Credit: Marvel Comics) Art by Mattia De Iulis. (Image Credit: Marvel Comics)[/caption] It's hard to say right now if Mephisto is literally Tony's birth father or if he merely considers Tony to be his son because Howard sold him Tony's soul. It may be that Amanda and Jude are still technically Tony's birth parents, but their short-lived union was orchestrated by Mephisto. Either way, the fact that Howard himself is apparently alive and plotting with Mephisto against Tony is easily the biggest reveal in this bizarre story. Hopefully upcoming issues will shed more light on what Mephisto and Howard have planned, and what this Iron Man multiverse story entails. Are we about to enter the Iron-Verse? Diablo 4 Left-Click Button Now Rebindable

Diablo 4's quarterly update introduces the Cannibals and a long-awaited feature, rebinding the left-click button. Blizzard revealed the information as part of a developer blog. The new group of enemies known as the Cannibals is one of many labeled "families" in the Diablo 4 universe. The developers of Diablo 4 previously announced that enemy groups will be classified first by family type and then genre, so within the Canibal group there will be some enemies that are ranged, melee, etc. Check out the trailer below showing a brief look at the Cannibals. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/26/diablo-4-cannibal-family-turnaround-trailer"] Some of the current known families include the Cultists, the Drowned, and the returning Fallen. Blizzard Developer, Candace Thomas, Senior Encounter Designer, describes the Cannibals as melee bruisers that leap toward players. Thomas states in the developer blog that each of the four family enemies has a unique fighting style.
  • The two-handed greatsword cleaver wielder that has a "slow sweeping frontal attack".
  • A more mobile attacker with a lightweight halberd for leaping great distances.
  • A bruiser that can stun players with a heavy spiked club attack.
  • The dual axe-wielding swarmers that aim to be a pain if left alone.
[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=diablo-4-gameplay-reveal-images&captions=true"] A short message from an unknown character named, Liya Khal’tib, provides some lore to the Cannibals, "The few who have survived encounters with these butchers share the same stories. They tell of the mad fire that burns in the eyes of all Cannibals, of how eating the flesh of their victims in battle only fuels their hunger for more. They whisper of the unlucky souls spared in the attacks, hauled off like livestock for the raiders to pick clean until their next hunt." The full message is readable in Blizzard's quarterly update. While this news doesn't include a release date for Diablo 4, the quarterly updates will be a way to continue learning more.

Diablo 4 Left-Click Now Rebindable

[caption id="attachment_230978" align="alignnone" width="720"]DIablo 4 Cannibals Screenshot Credit: Activision Blizzard[/caption] One of the major changes from Diablo 3 includes the ability to rebind the left-click button. This was a frequently asked for feature because you couldn't use what's known as force moving. Without force moving, if you accidentally left-click an enemy while trying to move toward them, it attacks them instead of only moving in that direction.

Changing the UI to Look More Realistic

Blizzard also tweaked the UI after receiving feedback from BlizzCon 2019. Lead UI Designer, Angela Del Priore, spoke about creating a more realistic inventory through different aesthetics. On top of this, Priore briefly mentioned they're developing Diablo 4 with controller support on PC.
