The Complex Is a New Interactive Sci-Fi Movie That Tracks Your Decisions

Wales Interactive, the developer behind live-action video games such as Late Shift, has announced The Complex, its latest project in the realms of interactive live-action movies. The Complex, which Wales Interactive describes as “the very first live-action interactive sci-fi film”, tells the story of the aftermath of a bio-weapon attack in London. The choose-your-own-adventure style film focuses on Dr. Amy Tenant, a nano-scientist who, along with a fellow scientist, has been locked in a lab that contains a perilous secret. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/05/the-complex-official-trailer"] Tenant’s journey features multi-option storytelling choices that branch out to 8 different endings, akin to Netflix's interactive Black Mirror episode Bandersnatch. But within those choices is a detailed real-time relationship status and personality trait tracking, which assesses your decisions and influences how the story plays out. Each interaction with characters you encounter will weaken or strengthen your bond with them, depending on your approach, and their status with you will affect the outcome of certain scenes. Your decisions also factor into your overall personality score, which is revealed at the end of the story. While The Complex looks like a classic FMV game or interactive movie due to its live action nature, it appears that beneath the surface is a more game-like system akin to that powering Life Is Strange 2 or the Telltale games. The Complex has been produced in partnership with Red and Black Films, Good Gate Media, and Little Jade Productions. It is written by Lynn Renee Maxcy, who is also part of the writing team for Hulu's The Handmaid’s Tale, and stars Bad Blood’s Michelle Mylett, Game of Thrones’ Kate Dickie, and Twitch streamer LeahViathan. Talking of streaming, the film also features a pause system when choices are presented, allowing streamers to get audiences involved in making decisions. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-25-best-sci-fi-movies&captions=true"] Releasing on March 31, The Complex will be available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. If you can’t wait, you can get a (unfortunately not interactive) rush right now with the best sci-fi movies of all time. Sony Closes First-Party PlayStation Studio

PlayStation has decided to close Manchester VR, its first-party studio in the UK that was working on an unannounced PlayStation VR project. As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, PlayStation made this decision "to close it as part of our efforts to improve efficiency and operational effectiveness." Manchester VR was formed in 2015 to specifically work on VR games. It never released a game, and has now become the third UK studio PlayStation has closed in the PS4 generation. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=best-vr-game-nominees&captions=true"] In 2016, PlayStation closed MotorStorm and Driveclub's Evolution Studio and, in 2017, it shut down Killzone: Mercenary and RIGS: Mechanized Combat League's Guerrilla Cambridge. PlayStation still has two studios operating in the UK, Dreams developer Media Molecule and the team behind Blood & Truth, London Studio. Even though it has shut down this VR-focused studio, PlayStation remains committed to PSVR, and it already confirmed that it will be backward compatible for the PlayStation 5. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/11/30/9-unforgettable-ps-vr-experiences"] Beat Saber, which is available on PSVR, won our Best VR Game of 2019, and beat out other PSVR titles as Blood and Truth, Ghost Giant, and Trover Saves The Universe. New Study Shows Lake on Mars Held Salty, Mineral-Filled Water

A new study has revealed that Mars' Gale Crater, home to NASA's Curiosity Rover, once held salty, mineral-filled water. While the Martian lake dried up long ago, scientist have seemingly confirmed that the water that filled the lake was not only mineral-filled, but was also at a comfortable pH level. While the study published in Nature Communications might not sound like much, this discovery continues to support the popular hypothesis that life previously existed on Mars. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-25-best-sci-fi-movies&captions=true"] The Curiosity Rover has been exploring the Gale Crater for some time now and has provided a wealth of information to NASA scientists. While life on Mars is far from confirmed, this discovery certainly continues to give life to this theory. In 2017, scientists were able to confirm signs of liquid water on the Red Planet. However, due to the cold atmosphere and freezing temperatures of Mars, the planet can no longer support permanent or significant amounts of liquid for long periods of time. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/07/25/did-scientists-find-liquid-water-on-mars"] Thanks to the MAVEN satellite, which orbits Mars, scientists also believe that the Red Planet once had a warm, wet, and hospitable atmosphere. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case due to a powerful solar wind which transformed Mars' atmosphere to a cold and potentially unhabitable one. While NASA scientists still have a lot to learn about Mars, they are hopeful that this discovery will continue to be a step forward. In July 2020, NASA is planning to launch a new Mars rover which will be able to "core samples of Martian rocks and soil," and will hopefully lead to new discoveries. Until scientists can learn more about Mars, we will have to rely on films like The Martian to propel our curiosity about the Red Planet. Houser already took an “extended break” that began in the spring of 2019 after the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2 in November 2018. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="legacyId=20048409&captions=true"] Dan along with his brother Sam Houser were executives at BMG Interactive before it was acquired by Take-Two. The Houser brothers founded Rockstar Games under Take-Two in December 1998. At Rockstar, the brothers wrote and developed games like GTA and Red Dead, but also Bully, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, and Smuggler's Run. Houser is credited as a writer on most of the Grand Theft Auto games from Grand Theft Auto 2 to Grand Theft Auto 5, as well as head writer on Bully, Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3, and Red Dead Redemption 2. In a 2018 interview with GQ Houser briefly talked about the challenge of writing Grand Theft Auto 6 in today's climate. "It’s really unclear what we would even do with [GTA 6], let alone how upset people would get with whatever we did," said Houser. "Both intense liberal progression and intense conservatism are both very militant, and very angry." Take-Two's Q3 FY2020 investor call is scheduled to take place on February 6 where we will be tuning in for additional comments about Dan Houser's departure from the company. George Lucas Reportedly Has Secret Cameos in Recent Star Wars Films

George Lucas reportedly has been featured in some of the recent Star Wars movies in a unique way. Sources for ABC News say that Lucas's scream appears in the films, which was originally recorded for American Graffiti – the filmmaker's last movie before Star Wars. When The Last Jedi came out, Matthew Wood, a supervising sound editor from Skywalker Sound, said to ABC News that the Wilhelm Scream has been officially retired from Star Wars. He said a new scream has been created that's been featured in The Last Jedi, Rogue One and other non-Star Wars movies. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=all-the-major-new-aliens-in-the-modern-star-wars-movies&captions=true"] Two years later, ABC reports that the new scream is "The George." Wood didn't confirm that the scream was from Lucas, but he and sound designer David Acord said that the new scream is featured in The Rise of Skywalker. Acord said he made over 2,000 sound effects for The Rise of Skywalker, which didn't all make it into the movie. He also created the sounds of The Child in The Mandalorian. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=star-wars-every-jedi-and-every-sith-ever&captions=true"] In the same interview, the sound designers said the sounds of the Orbacks – which were the giant, hairy, four-legged creatures with tusks that Jannah and her crew were riding on – are "90% pitched, slowed down crow" with some donkey thrown in there. A sound effect he didn't have to make was the voice of the miniature droidsmith, Babu Frik. He was voiced by Harry Potter actress Shirley Henderson, who apparently delivered her lines while controlling the mouth for the puppet on set. The sound artists said that the members of the Sith Eternal in Episode 9 are chanting "Revenge, Soul, Kill" in the actual language of Sanskrit. It was voice actor Sam Witwer who came up with that phrase. Witwer provided voices for The Rise of Skywalker but also played Starkiller in The Force Unleashed and earned an Emmy nomination for playing Darth Maul in The Clone Wars. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/01/25/star-wars-episode-9-colin-trevorrow-confirms-the-leak-is-real-ign-now"] Wood and Acord are nominated at the Academy Awards for their sound effects work in The Rise of Skywalker. The two were nominated for The Force Awakens at the 2016 Oscars but lost the award to Mad Max: Fury Road. Wood was nominated for the sound effects in The Last Jedi two years later but lost to Dunkirk. The two are nominated this year against 1917, Ford v. Ferrari, Joker and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. For more on The Rise of Skywalker, read which ships from Star Wars: Resistance made their way into the film and see the leaked concept art that Colin Trevorrow confirmed was from his time working on the film.
