Bungie to Remove Paid Loot Boxes From Destiny 2 Next Season

The upcoming Season 10 of Destiny 2 will see Bungie remove paid loot boxes from the game. Destiny 2 director Luke Smith announced in a lengthy "Director's Cut" blog post on Wednesday that Bungie is removing the ability for players to purchase Bright Engrams, which are essentially paid loot boxes. A Bright Engram can be purchased in the Eververse store using Silver, an in-game currency that can be purchased with real money, and decoded to reveal random shaders, emotes and more. "For Season 10, we're doing away with Bright Engrams as purchasable items," Smith wrote in the blog post. "We want players to know what something costs before they buy it. Bright Engrams don't live up to that principle so we will no longer be selling them on the Eververse Store, though they will still appear on the Free Track of the Season Pass." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=destiny-2-forsaken-screenshots&captions=true"] As Smith pointed out, Bright Engrams will still be in the game on the free track of the season pass but players will no longer be able to spend the premium currency of Silver on them. Smith doesn't bring up Bright Engrams again in his blog post and it sounds like they will no longer be available for purchase right from the start of Season 10. With the removal of Bright Engrams from Destiny 2 soon, it's important to note that Bungie still has plenty of items in the game that players can purchase such as its season pass. Premium random loot boxes have been on their way out of video games in recent years, with the entire discussion coming to a head in 2017 with Star Wars Battlefront 2's loot box situation. EA's handling of loot boxes in Battlefront 2 had state representatives taking a stand and calling for legislation against "the spread of predatory practices in online gaming." A U.S. Senator went so far as to introduce a bill that would ban the selling of loot boxes to children. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/10/12/the-esrb-and-the-loot-box-gambling-controversy"] EA DICE said the company hit rock bottom with that loot box controversy. The Entertainment Software Association announced last year that Nintendo, Mircosoft, and Sony were all working on new loot box policies for their platforms that would disclose a range of odds associated with a player's purchase. EA seems to have backed off of loot boxes and it seems Bungie is joining the ranks of companies like EA doing the same. This might be a result of Bungie's recently-gained independence from Activision. Season 10 of Destiny 2 is expected to begin soon although no start date has been announced just yet. Type #Candyman 5 Times Into Twitter to Watch a Sneak Peek

Jordan Peele, producer and co-writer of 2020's Candyman, found a clever way to release the new movie's first teaser, playing on the film's legend of saying "Candyman" five times to summon the hook-handed killer. As noted by Mashable, Peele revealed Twitter users can post a tweet that includes "#Candyman" five times to have the sneak peek sent directly to their feed. The six-second teaser features our first look at Candyman's infamous hook, as well as a blood-curdling scream from star Teyonah Parris (WandaVision). [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-best-horror-movies-on-netflix&captions=true"] Peele's Candyman will be a "spiritual sequel" to Clive Barker's 1992 original. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman, HBO's Watchmen) stars alongside Parris and Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead). Original Candyman actor Tony Todd is reportedly returning for the 2020 film, according to Bloody Disgusting, though it's unclear in what capacity. Nia DaCosta (Little Woods), who co-wrote the script alongside Peele and Win Rosenfeld, is directing. "The original was a landmark film for black representation in the horror genre," Peele said when the film was announced in 2018. "Alongside Night of the Living Dead, Candyman was a major inspiration for me as a filmmaker — and to have a bold new talent like Nia at the helm of this project is truly exciting." Candyman hits theaters on June 12. Marvel Reveals Disturbing X-Men Death Ritual

The X-Men may have achieved immortality, but every gift comes with a price. And in this case, the X-Men charge a heavy toll for the gift of mutant resurrection. Read on to learn more about a macabre new ritual introduced in X-Men #7, but beware of spoilers ahead! [poilib element="accentDivider"] [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=20-most-anticipated-comics-of-2020&captions=true"] The mutant race has suffered a great deal in recent years, particularly thanks to the events of House of M and Scarlet Witch's misguided attempt to eliminate mutants altogether. Professor Xavier's new resurrection machine finally gives the X-Men the ability to reverse that tragedy and restore all the mutants who lost their powers on M-Day. The catch is that they have to die first. X-Men #7 introduces a grotesque Krakoan ritual called the Crucible. Basically, any de-powered mutant is free to seek a death and resurrection, but they have to earn that resurrection by fighting Apocalypse to the death. (Oh, you hadn't heard? Apocalypse is part of the X-Men now.) The point isn't to actually defeat the all-powerful Apocalypse, but to prove oneself worthy through ritualistic combat. That's the ordeal Melody Guthrie (Cannonball's sister) faces as she seeks to reclaim the power that was stolen from her. [caption id="attachment_2309595" align="aligncenter" width="925"]Art by Leinil Yu. (Image Credit: Marvel Comics) Art by Leinil Yu. (Image Credit: Marvel Comics)[/caption] Melody proves herself brave in the face of certain death, with Apocalypse savagely beating her and granting what he considers an honorable end. Melody is then resurrected with her powers restored and brought before the nation of Krakoa, now fully accepted as one of their own. This is just the latest sign things have gone a little kooky in the X-Men world. From the beginning of writer Jonathan Hickman's X-Men run, signs have been appearing that Professor Xavier may have turned evil. Powers of X #6 lent further fuel to that fire with the reveal Moira MacTaggert has spent years chipping away at Xavier's moral code and making him more accepting of her extreme plans for mutantkind. The end result being Xavier has no problem watching as Apocalypse literally beats his students to death. The reveal of the Crucible may lend some insight into one of the bigger questions surrounding the new X-Men status quo. If Moira showed Xavier and Magneto the future of the mutant race, why didn't they do anything to prevent tragedies like the genocide on Genosha or M-Day? Based on the events of X-Men #7, it can be inferred that Xavier saw those events as necessary evils in order to show mutants the threat posed by humanity. Only by losing their powers and being forged in the fire of combat can these mutants become who they were meant to be. [caption id="attachment_2309596" align="aligncenter" width="927"]Art by Leinil Yu. (Image Credit: Marvel Comics) Art by Leinil Yu. (Image Credit: Marvel Comics)[/caption] Needless to say, many of the X-Men have mixed feelings about the Crucible and the consequences of unlimited mutant resurrection. The highly spiritual Nightcrawler is especially bothered by the implications of resurrection, wondering aloud to Cyclops whether a mutant's soul returns to each new resurrected body or if these clones truly are nothing more than copies. Nightcrawler also ponders the implications of mutants finding a true paradise on Earth and whether that renders the afterlife unnecessary. In order to help confront these difficult conundrums, Nightcrawler announces his intention to create a new mutant religion. The Dreams Community Says Remakes are Drowning Out Original Games

Dreams, Media Molecule’s newest game-slash-creation tool, has been a hit with creatives looking to flex their game design prowess. But some say the discovery tool that’s meant to highlight up-and-coming projects tend to favor viral content over original creations, something Media Molecule says it’s looking to address. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/14/dreams-launch-trailer"] Dreams is a tool that lets creators work within the Dreams game engine and create all kinds of games, animations, and visual content. We’ve already seen wildly imaginative creations come out of Dreams already, and there’s even a Trending Dreams tab that’s meant to highlight some of the most popular Dreams creations. But one critique of the Trending system is how it places more weight on games based purely on plays and not necessarily likes. In practice, this floats remakes and “memes” up to the top over original creations that may not have gone viral. [poilib element="quoteBox" parameters="excerpt=The%20trending%20algorithm%20right%20now%20is%20rewarding%20clickbait%20and%20it%20is%20suffocating%20high-quality%20content"]In one thread on the r/PS4Dreams subreddit with over 1.2 thousand upvotes, players are discussing ways this system can be improved. “I understand that trending games are the most played games of the day but... what happens is that meme and superhero games that have 3k plays but only 100 likes are absolutely overshadowing great creations that have like 200 likes but only have, for example, 400 plays.” “Feedback is a vital part of helping us shape and grow the Dreams community,” a Media Molecule spokesperson tells IGN when we reached out regarding these concerns. “We started making the first changes to our recommendation & discovery algorithms in Early Access and plan on continuing that work to improve them as we go.” Media Molecule specifically mentions the Reddit thread saying, “The Reddit thread currently contains some good ideas, such as the ‘likes vs plays’ ratio currently and we are certainly giving them some careful consideration as part of this process.” The studio didn’t mention specifically how it’s looking to change the Trending algorithm, but the developers are looking at the discussion in the Reddit thread. And there’s plenty of lively discussion from the community on some potential changes. “The trending algorithm right now is rewarding clickbait and it is suffocating high-quality content,” writes one commenter. “There are two things that we need trending to do: 1. Direct users to content they are likely to enjoy 2. Ensure that high-quality creations get the attention they deserve. Right now it is doing neither.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/08/29/kaiju-simulator-in-ps4-dreams"] Dreams boast several remakes of existing games. Games like Fallout 4, Persona 5, Ghost of Tsushima, Spyro, and more have all been remade in Dreams. And while original games like a project that lets players control a giant Kaiju have broken through, many argue that they're still overwhelmingly buried underneath recognizable remakes. Especially since there are professional developers who believe Dreams can be a powerful tool for creating original games. “I get what you’re saying but memes and remakes and random superhero free roam games won’t stop because that’s what younger audiences love and hey, I am not against those,” writes another commenter. “I think those projects are as welcomed as any other in Dreams. The problem is that the trending button is putting only the most played games at the top. It doesn’t matter if, in 300 plays, you get 300 likes. If a meme game gets 10 likes from 3k plays, it will overshadow your flawless game. That’s definitely an issue that won’t ease over time if [Media Molecule] doesn’t work on the matter [in my opinion].” [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=14-community-creations-made-in-dreams&captions=true"] Other commenters have said that the algorithm did change following the end of the early access period. And considering the studio wants to improve the system as well, Media Molecule says it will implement changes to the Trending tab with consideration to the community. At less than a month out from Dreams’ official release, Media Molecule has already gathered a committed community excited about the game and its potential. Indiana Jones 5: Steven Spielberg Won’t Direct, James Mangold in Talks to Replace Him

Steven Spielberg will reportedly not direct Indiana Jones 5, with Logan director, James Mangold, in talks to take his place. As reported by Variety, Spielberg will remain on as a producer and this is entirely his decision – it is said he wants to hand the franchise to a new generation. George Lucas is also reportedly not involved in this film. Harrison Ford is still on board, saying two weeks ago that filming begins in two months. The film is currently set for a July 9, 2021 release. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/14/harrison-ford-indiana-jones-5-will-see-part-of-his-history-resolved"] Spielberg is currently wrapping up his adaptation of West Side Story, which is due out in theaters this year. He's directed the past four Indiana Jones movies, with Lucas credited on the story for each film. Writing duties were originally handled by Kingdom of the Crystal Skull writer David Koepp, but reportedly were given to Solo: A Star Wars Story co-writer Jonathan Kasdan in 2018. Mangold recently released Ford v. Ferrari starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon. Deadline said as recently as January that Mangold was reuniting with Damon for an adaptation of the novel The Force for Disney's 20th Century Studios. This comes less than a month after producer Kathleen Kennedy said some final touches on the script were all that's left before production. "We’re working away, getting the script where we want it to be and then we’ll be ready to go,” Kennedy said. “Harrison Ford will be involved, yeah. It’s not a reboot; it’s a continuation. He can’t wait.” [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=20-actors-who-revived-iconic-roles&captions=true"] Little is known about Indiana Jones 5 other than Spielberg had no intention of killing Indy, and Ford likely wouldn't return for a sixth time. Shia Labeouf's character was also not in Koepp's script as of 2017 and Koepp had no contact with Lucas. Ford has since spoken about the film but offered very few details a couple of weeks ago. “Well, I’m not going to share the story with you because that doesn’t seem like a good idea,” Ford said in February 2020. “But we’ll see new developments in his life, his relationship. We’ll see part of his history resolved.” Disney has plans to go further with Indiana Jones beyond a fifth film with now ex-CEO Bob Iger saying in 2016, "Right now, we're focused on a reboot, or a continuum and then a reboot of some sort." Spielberg similarly said in 2018 that, “This will be Harrison Ford’s last Indiana Jones movie, I am pretty sure, but it will certainly continue after that."
