How Thor Influenced Kenneth Branagh’s Artemis Fowl

When Artemis Fowl first came out in 2001, the world was in its early phases of Harry Potter hysteria, and the tale of a 12-year-old criminal mastermind who gets pulled into the secret underground world of fairies, dwarves and trolls quickly followed in Potter’s footsteps to become a bestselling series. But when director Kenneth Branagh took on the daunting task of adapting the beloved Eoin Colfer novel for Disney, he didn’t look to his experience with Harry Potter to help guide him; instead, he drew heavily on his work in adapting Thor.

Despite the surface-level comparisons that are easy to draw between the popularity of Artemis Fowl and Harry Potter, the comparison to Branagh's interpretation of Thor actually is more fitting. For his part, Colfer has always pushed back against any comparisons to the Potter stories, instead telling Publishers Weekly back in 2001 that his children’s book was “Die Hard with fairies.” Watch the first trailer for Artemis Fowl below:

Alien: Blackout Reveal May Come During The Game Awards

A fresh trademark spotted here on the World Intellectual Property Organization’s site (via Eurogamer) appears to indicate Fox’s next Alien video game will be called Alien: Blackout.

The trademark overtly specifies video games as the classification, not a film.

Wreck-It Ralph 2 Has Second Best Thanksgiving Opening Weekend

Despite Creed II putting up a good fight (pun intended), Disney continued its dominance over the Thanksgiving weekend, with Ralph Breaks the Internet (a.k.a. Wreck-It Ralph 2) taking in $55.7 million over the three-day weekend and $84.5 million over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The five-day total is the second best in Thanksgiving history, just behind the $93.6 million earned by Frozen in 2013, and just above the $82.1 million Moana earned in 2016. We’re delving deeper into the numbers to compare the three-day tally to the rest of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ movies, with many of the studio’s most recent hits arriving over the holiday.
