Why FX’s Y Ditched ‘The Last Man’
After a long journey to officially getting a Hollywood adaptation, Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra's Y the Last Man is finally making its way to the small screen. But when FX announced its pilot order for a Y: The Last Man series back in April, the network surprised audiences when it announced the show would be simply called "Y."
FX CEO John Landgraf explained to members of the TV Critics' Association that the idea to simplify the title had multiple benefits to the show.
"I guess you tend to see one or two word titles," he said, acknowledging that there are some exceptions to the "Breaking Bad"s of the world. He added of the appeal of the one-letter title, "'Y' seems like a provocative shape. We can do a lot with it graphically. It's a little mysterious."
Ex Machina Director Alex Garland’s First TV Series, Devs, Lands at FX
FX has ordered Ex Machina director Alex Garland's limited series, Devs.
The series will consist of eight episodes, all directed by Garland, and is set to premiere on FX sometime in 2019. The story follows a young computer engineer, Lily Chan, as she investigates her employer, San Francisco tech company Amaya, who she believes murdered her boyfriend.
Sonoya Mizuno (Ex Machina, Maniac, Crazy Rich Asians) will play Chan. Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation, Fargo) will portray Forest, the CEO of Amaya. The rest of the cast includes Jin Ha, Zach Grenier, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, and Alison Pill.
“After reading all 8 scripts and hearing Alex’s brilliant vision and commitment to direct all of the episodes, it was an easy decision to order Devs to series,” said FX Networks CEO John Landgraf.
FX Orders Epic Adaptation of Shogun
FX has ordered a 10-episode limited series period drama based on Shogun, the best-selling novel by James Clavell.
Shogun is set in feudal Japan and details the rise of Lord Toranaga, who is at odds with dangerous political rivals. It also features John Blackthorne, an English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, and Lady Mariko, a skilled female samurai.
“The story of Shōgun has captivated audiences since James Clavell first released his epic novel more than 40 years ago,” said CEO of FX John Landgraf. “The themes of an outsider encountering a new culture are as relevant today as then."
Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, Michael De Luca, Eugene Kelly and James Clavell's daughter Michaela Clavell will serve as executive producers along with Tim Van Patten, who is set to direct multiple episodes of the show. Ronan Bennett, known for his work on Public Enemies, and Rachel Bennette, known for her work on NW, will write the series. The show will be shot in both the U.K. and Japan and be produced by FX Productions.
Chris Rock to Star in Fargo Season 4
FX's Fargo is tapping one of its biggest names yet for its fourth season. The network announced Chris Rock will be joining the latest season of the anthology series.
Rock will play the lead of one of a families at the center of Season 4. He's described as "a man who — in order to prosper — has surrendered his oldest boy to his enemy, and who must in turn raise his son’s enemy as his own. It’s an uneasy peace, but profitable. And then the head of the Kansas City mafia goes into the hospital for routine surgery and dies. And everything changes. It’s a story of immigration and assimilation, and the things we do for money. And as always, a story of basically decent people who are probably in over their heads. You know, Fargo."

9 YouTube Channels That Are Just as Addictive as Netflix
YouTube has become a legitimate contender to Netflix and Amazon Prime Video as a producer of quality original programming with their release of the highly popular Karate Kid spin-off Cobra Kai. In our review, we said it "successfully keeps the Karate Kid legacy alive."
Later this year, YouTube Premium will release a sci-fi horror series, titled Origin, in hopes to keep their upward momentum going, but let's not forget that YouTube was founded on the notion of the "everyday creator" that doesn't have the financial backing of a large studio.
To honor these everyday creators, here are our 9 favorite YouTube channels that we think give the Netflixs of the world a run for their money. You can click through the slideshow below, or scroll down to the bottom of the page to view our picks.
Fortnite for Android Will Be Available on Epic’s Website to Avoid Google Play Store Fees
In order to maintain a direct relationship with players and to avoid Google Play's fees, Epic Games will release the Android version of Fortnite Battle Royale through its own website.
Epic spoke with The Verge to confirm earlier rumors that Fortnite will not be coming to the Google Play Store. Instead, it will be available for download through the company's official website via an installer program that will bring the game to compatible Android devices.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney says the main reason for circumventing the Google Play Store is to maintain a direct relationship with players, similarly to how Epic offers Fortnite on PC and Mac through its own launcher instead of through Steam. Epic reportedly went through the App Store to make Fortnite available for iOS devices because of how much more closed Apple's ecosystem is.
