Marvel’s Crazy Venom Twist Changes the History of the Symbiote

If you thought you knew the history of Venom’s symbiote, then think again. Writer Donny Cates and artist Ryan Stegman just introduced a new twist to the symbiote mythology in Venom #1, a brand new series that is part of Marvel Comics’ “Fresh Start” relaunch.

Warning: full spoilers ahead! For our thoughts on the twist, check out our video discussion above.

It turns out that there were symbiotes on Earth long before Spider-Man returned from Secret Wars wearing a black-and-white suit that turned out to be a symbiotic alien creature. Black Panther director Ryan Coogler spoke to reporters at the Cannes Film Festival and revealed some interesting insights into what could be in store for the Marvel Studios' franchise.

According to Variety, the topic of a female-led spin-off was a hot topic when the moderator, Elvis Mitchell, asked Coogler about the idea. The director seemed open to the possibility. “Oh man," Coogler said. "That would be amazing if the opportunity came up. They did it in the comic-book version.”

When Coogler was asked if the women of Wakanda were just as important as the men, he said, "I think you could argue they are more important."

DC’s Biggest Superhero Comics Just Went Up in Price

All DC Universe comics will be priced at $3.99 going forward. When DC Rebirth launched in 2016, every comic was priced at $2.99. In 2017, over a dozen titles were bumped up to $3.99, with all of DC’s twice-per-month titles (that featured their most popular heroes) remaining at $2.99. To make up for the price increase, a code for a digital copy of the comic was added as compensation to the affected comics. But this new price increase isn’t as generous to readers: even though DC’s whole superhero line is now at $3.99, complimentary digital codes will no longer be offered in any of those comics.

Here’s a full list of every comic that was bumped from $2.99 to $3.99.

Not every comic published by DC will see a price bump. The recently launched New Age of DC Heroes line and all kids comics will maintain their current price point.
