Netflix Buys Sci-Fi Thriller Extinction from Universal

Netflix has acquired sci-fi thriller Extinction after Universal ditched it from its slate.

The Lizzy Caplan (Cloverfield) and Michael Pena (Ant-Man)-starring flick was due to hit theaters last month, but Universal pulled it from release without explanation last November. Netflix has subsequently confirmed to Variety that it has bought the rights to Extinction and plans to release it later this year.

The news comes in the wake of another 'Netflix Film' that already came pre-packaged from another studio, The Cloverfield Paradox, suggesting a strategy for the streaming service of, er, picking up the scraps.

Dark Knight’s Goyer Drops Out of Directing He-Man Movie

Dark Knight and Batman v Superman scribe David Goyer will no longer be directing the Masters of the Universe reboot for Sony.

In December it was reported that Goyer was in talks to direct the film, but THR has put the rumors to rest, stating scheduling conflicts were the cause of the exit. However, Goyer will still serve as writer and executive producer on the reboot, based on the popuar line of '80s toys from Mattel and the subsequent cartoon series and Dolph Lundgren film. He is the latest in a short line of directors to drop out of the gig, following McG, who left the project earlier last year, and Jon M. Chu.

MoviePass has hit another major subscriber milestone.

The subscription service, which allows members to see one movie a day for $9.95 a month, has reached 2 million subscribers. This is less than a month after MoviePass reached 1.5 million subscribers, and seven weeks after hitting one million subscribers.

MoviePass has continued to gain new subscribers at a rapid rate since it lowered its monthly subscription fee from $50 to $9.95 this past August. In September of last year, the company projected to reach 2.5 million subscribers over the next 12 months.

Activision Blizzard Earnings: People Spent Lots of Money Digitally

Activision Blizzard had its year-end call with investors today, revealing $7 billion in net revenue for its 2017 fiscal year. For the fourth quarter of the year, digital revenue accounted for $1.62 billion, over half of its total $2.64 billion for Q4.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III's Zombie Chronicles add-on was the number-one game add-on for Sony PlayStation 4, but "player investment in virtual goods and service" last year exceeded DLC for Call of Duty and Destiny.

That means things like Overwatch loot boxes, for example. The popularity of loot boxes and their revenue-generating possibilities has caused more than just investors to take notice. Belgium proposed banning loot boxes altogether across the European Union, and one state lawmaker in the United States also wants to limit the sale of loot boxes in Hawaii, his home state.

Michael Bay Might Direct Lobo DC Movie for WB

Michael Bay might reportedly direct his first superhero movie for DC and Warner Bros.

TheWrap reports Bay has met with Warner Bros. and DC to discuss potentially taking on a Lobo standalone film. Bay provided some notes on the project, which Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman) will incorporate into a rewrite. Once the rewrites are finished, Bay will meet with Warner Bros. about potentially making a deal. Fuchs signed on to the project in 2016.

Warner Bros. and DC reportedly want Lobo to be their answer to Fox's Deadpool franchise. Lobo was created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, with the character making his debut in comics in 1983's Omega Men #3. He is a 7-foot-tall, blue-skinned antihero who works as a bounty hunter and interstellar mercenary.

Fortnite Has More Concurrent Players than PUBG

On the back of its battle royale mode, Fortnite has passed PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds in concurrent players on PC.

Fortnite hit 3.4 million concurrents last Sunday, February 4, developer Epic Games confirmed in a blog post. Around the same time, it suffered from numerous server issues and outages, which are the main topic of the post.

As Epic explains, Fornite has gone from 60,000 concurrents to 3.4 million in just a few months, leading to some scalability issues. Looking ahead, Epic says it seeks to expand and optimize its server system to accommodate the game's ballooning player base.
