Comic Book Reviews for July 26, 2017

It was another big week of comics, even as the industry recovered from the insanity that is Comic-Con. DC delivered pivotal new chapters of books like The Flash, Action Comics and Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps. Marvel kept the Secret Empire train rolling and kicked off a prequel to Telltale's Guardians of the Galaxy game. Oni Press gave us the comic book sequel to Rick and Morty's "Interdimensional Cable" episodes. And Boom Studios launched their second monthly Power Rangers comic.

Scroll down to check out our reviews for these and various other new releases, and be sure to let us know your favorite books of the week in the comments below.

Back in Blazkowicz with Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus

In the demo I played on the PC version, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus brings back the challenging, unadulterated shooter action of Wolfenstein: The New Order in a great-looking followup to Machine Games' reboot. To be clear there isn’t a ton that’s radically different about it mechanically: BJ still sneaks around knifing Nazis in the back before grabbing two guns and blowing the rest away. But the two levels I played each have some distinctive qualities that made them feel different from the "original" in subtle but important ways.

Like the first game, Wolfenstein 2 plays its story of resisting technologically advanced Nazis pretty straight, with strong performances from its cast. BJ and his now-pregnant girlfriend Anya, grizzled science genius Set, and the rest of the resistance fighters left standing at the end of The New Order all give convincing dramatic performances during the cinematics I saw. At the same time, The New Colossus is self-aware enough to know when it’s being ridiculous – and fully embraces it.

Parallels were drawn instantly between Payback’s derelicts and the hidden car systems previously featured in the likes of Test Drive Unlimited, Forza Horizon, and subsequently The Crew, but Need for Speed Payback associate art director Bryn Alban explained to IGN that Ghost has added additional layers to its take on abandoned cars.

Stranger Things’ Actor Talks Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen

Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen is going to be a lot darker than previous on-screen iterations.

Rise of the Blood Queen actor David Harbour (Stranger Things) went on camera with IGN's Terri Schwartz at San Diego Comic Con and got to talking about the long-awaited reboot of Hellboy, where he explained his love of the Hellboy comic and movies:

"One of the most gratifying things was that Mike Mignola, the director Neil Marshall and Larry Levin and Lloyd Gordon, the producers, all watched 'Stranger Things' and I think they all literally, like, Mike told me they just called each other and were, like, 'this guy should play Hellboy,'" said Harbour.

Brolin Brings Cable to Life in Deadpool 2

Less than 20 days into the shooting of Deadpool 2, director David Leitch (who also directed John Wick and Atomic Blonde) looks like he's having fun.

In an interview with IGN at San Diego Comic Con, Leitch discussed how actor Josh Brolin was the perfect choice for the legendary character of Cable. Brolin, who's long been a fan-favorite for the part, has apparently been getting into the role on his end, transforming himself physically with tons of time in the gym as well as absorbing himself in the character.
