SAG vs Globes: Which Predicts Oscar Winners Better?
When winter rolls around, awards season kicks into high gear, with the best movies of the year receiving recognition at numerous awards shows. The film awards season culminates in February with the Oscars, and by then movie lovers have likely spent months trying to speculate which of the most lauded films of the year will walk away with the Best Picture prize. The easiest way to pick out the prospective winners is by keeping an eye on two particularly notable awards shows: the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the Golden Globes.
Both honor the best of the best in different ways: the SAG Awards' top prize is the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, and the Golden Globes separate the Best Picture winners into two categories, Drama and Comedy/Musical. In some years they're on the same page, but in some -- like this year, when Hidden Figures won at the SAG Awards and the Golden Globes honored Moonlight and La La Land -- they're pretty split.
