Underworld: Blood Wars Underwhelms in Box Office Debut

Underworld: Blood Wars debuted this weekend to underwhelming numbers, earning $13.1 million at the domestic box office.

As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, the fifth entry in Screen Gems' vampire vs. Lycan franchise, from director Anna Foerster, had a production budget of $35 million. While it placed fourth domestically, the film is doing much better internationally, having currently earned a total of $45 million.

Meanwhile, Hidden Figures fared far better in its expansion across North America. The film, which tells the story of the three African American women at NASA who aided in sending the first men into space, is currently sitting at second place with $21.8 million. For our thoughts on the film, read IGN's Hidden Figures review.

Riverdale Sets the Stage for More Archie in Pop Culture

Riverdale is a new take on the Archie Comics franchise, which often calls to mind Twin Peaks or 90210 more than the classic comic strip. But Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa previewed during the 2017 winter Television Critics Association press tour that this is simply the beginning of a new media era for the Archie brand.

Calling Riverdale the "mothership," Aguirre-Sacasa discussed how there are already plans to expand the Archie universe in future years. In addition to Archie, Betty and Veronica, the new CW series introduces Josie and the Pussycats as "Riverdale's answer to Destiny's Child or Dreamgirls" and there also are potential ("with a capital P") plans to bring in Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

Supergirl/Flash Musical Crossover Villain Revealed

Look for an update to this article below, with more information.

At the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour today, Greg Berlanti revealed the villain for the upcoming Supergirl/The Flash musical crossover will be none other than The Music Meister.

The Music Meister was created for the animated series Batman: The Brave and the Bold's own musical episode, where his powers caused the superheroes and villains he encountered to break into song. Since the musical Flash/Supergirl crossover was announced, fans have speculated a live-action version of the character would be a natural way to make the plotline work.

Neil Patrick Harris voiced the Music Meister on Brave and the Bold. But could he play him on the show? Said Berlanti, about Harris' potential involvement, "We haven't gone about casting yet. It's the right question though!"

Rogue One No Match for Force Awakens’ Debut in China

Despite opening at the top of the box office in China this week, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's debut was comparatively far lower than Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Disney's new Star Wars film earned $9.7 million during its Friday opening in China, and a total of $10.4 million when factoring in Thursday night screenings, according to data from Ent Group, Variety reports.

This is significantly weaker than Star Wars: The Force Awakens' impressive debut in China last year, as the J.J. Abrams-directed film earned $27.8 million during its Saturday debut in January 2016. It's worth noting, however, that this was before the Chinese box office took a dive in May of last year.
