Arrival Writer on Creating One of 2016’s Best Films

Director Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival is not only one of the best-reviewed films of the year, but is already being proclaimed as one of the best sci-fi films of the 21st century. Following a group of scientists hired by the military to try and interpret the language of the new aliens that have landed on Earth, it’s the kind of intelligent, tense, and emotional film that has gotten sci-fi fans everywhere buzzing about its quality.

As anyone familiar with Ted Chiang’s “Story of Your Life” (the short story that inspired the film) can attest to, screenwriter Eric Heisserer had his hands full in bringing Arrival to the big screen. Adapting from an already high-concept short story into a feature film is no easy task, though the critical reception and awards hype surrounding it makes it seem like Heisserer’s work more than paid off.

Harry Potter’s David Yates to Direct All 5 Fantastic Beasts Movies

With the Fantastic Beasts series expanding into five movies, Warner Bros. is sticking with director David Yates to helm the remaining four films.

Yates told The Hollywood Reporter that, for now, he has committed to the entire prequel series,  and he doesn’t see at it as a daunting task at all. Yates directed the last four Harry Potter films along with the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

“I love making films, and I’ve got a great team, all of whom are like family,” Yates told THR. “I only look at it movie to movie.”

The director also briefly touched on the sequel and J.K. Rowling’s script. Yates is promising that the second film will “feel so different from” the first one, and that it’ll be haunting and darker. But, it will still maintain the levity the Harry Potter franchise is known for.

The Croods 2 Now Extinct

DreamWorks Animation's 2013 film The Croods won't receive a sequel anytime soon, as The Croods 2 has been removed from the studio's production schedule.

According to Variety, Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley traveled to DreamWorks' headquarters in Glendale yesterday to break the news, telling the studio to immediately cease production on The Croods 2.

As such, approximately 30 people who were working on the sequel are now out of a job; though, DreamWorks is reportedly trying to find a way to keep them employed at the studio. New Star Wars: Rogue One TV Spot Released

A new 30-second commercial for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story premiered today.

The spot doesn't have too much in the way of new footage. It's in there alright, but it's fleeting. In fact, much of the footage comes from trailers already released. Still, seeing Darth Vader is going to be awesome no matter how many times you've seen it before.

There is a cool new look at a squadron of TIE-Fighters and some new dialogue, but other than that, the trailer doesn't really tell us anything we don't already know. But it's Rogue One footage, and that alone is worth quite a lot if you're a Star Wars diehard.

A new international trailer for Rogue One premiered yesterday and it showed off never-before-seen footage. In it we saw our first glimpse of a necklace given to Jyn by her mother, played by Valene Kane.

Sandman Movie Writer Wants to Be Fired

Screenwriter Eric Heisserer’s sci-fi film Arrival is out today, and to very good reviews. But the scripter also has several other genre projects in the works, including the Universal monsters reboot Van Helsing and an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s classic comic Sandman.

We had a chance to talk to Heisserer recently, and while he didn’t have much to say about Van Helsing because it’s so early for that project, the writer did say that he’s reached a point where he just doesn’t think Sandman works as a movie.
