Star Trek: Behind the Saga of The Original Movies
There’s a point in the new Star Trek 50th Anniversary Blu-ray documentary where filmmaker Nicholas Meyer recalls how the success of his movie Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan prompted Paramount to offer him the directing job on the sequel. The beloved character of Spock of course was killed in Khan, so when Meyer was told the third film would be about the character’s return, the helmer opted out. “I’ve never understood resurrection,” he says.
Of course, Star Trek has long been about resurrection, at least from a behind the scenes perspective. The original 1960s show famously -- and narrowly -- avoided cancellation after its second year thanks to a letter-writing campaign by fans… before getting canned after three seasons anyway. It lived on in syndication in the decade that followed, taking a new form for a brief stint in animation even as creator Gene Roddenberry plotted to return Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Doctor McCoy and the rest to live-action one way or the other.

Warner Bros.' The Flash movie may soon be adding another member to its cast, as Billy Crudup is reportedly in talks to star as the father of Ezra Miller's Barry Allen.
While the studio has yet to officially comment on the matter, sources have told Variety that Crudup is currently in negotiations to join the project.
This wouldn't be the first time the actor has appeared in a DC film, having previous starred as Doctor Manhattan/Jon Osterman in Zack Snyder's Watchmen. Crudup also appeared in last year's Oscar-winning film, Spotlight.

Sgt. Rock Will Eventually Make it to Legends of Tomorrow
Given the fact that the time travel scenario in DC's Legends of Tomorrow allows the series to use DC Comics characters from pretty much any era, it would feel like a natural place to bring the comic book character Sgt. Rock into live-action - and indeed, Rock's introduction has been rumored before, only for it to not occur. However, Legends of Tomorrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim tells IGN they do indeed plan to bring in Sgt. Rock eventually.
Season 2 is introducing the Justice Society of America, World War II background included, and I asked Guggenheim if that could allow for Rock -- traditionally depicted in DC Comics as a US World War II soldier -- to make his debut as well.
Breaking Bad Creator Developing New HBO Miniseries
Raven, a miniseries about the Jim Jones cult, is in the works at HBO, and Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan is on board to both write and executive produce.
After working with Gilligan on Breaking Bad, director Michelle MacLaren -- who helmed some of that AMC show's most acclaimed episodes -- is re-teaming with Gilligan to direct and executive produce Raven, Deadline reports. MacLaren has also directed episodes of The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones.
Raven will tell the story of Jim Jones and his group of followers, who he goaded into committing mass murder-suicide in Jonestown, Guyana in 1978.
8 of Mario’s Weirdest Appearances on Non-Nintendo Platforms
With the recent reveal of Super Mario Run for iOS devices, a lot of long-time Nintendo fans are still pretty shocked at the sight of their favorite mustachio'd plumber running right on an iPhone. Truth be told though, Mario was never the chaste platform loyalist many of you thought him to be. He is, in fact, a naughty little plumber who's not only been on lots of non-Nintendo systems, but in genres you probably never imagined.
Don't believe us? Well, we predicted your staunch denial and prepared accordingly with eight concrete examples, including video evidence. This is just a sample though, and is in no way a comprehensive documentation of Mario's many indiscretions, including a slew of hilarious unlicensed browser-based knock-offs.

11 Things We Learned About Super Mario Run
Shigeru Miyamoto has given plenty of presentations in his long career, but Tuesday’s surprise announcement of Super Mario Run at Apple’s September iPhone event was a little different for Nintendo’s most famous game designer, even if some of it was also business as usual.
“Yeah it’s the same that we always do,” Miyamoto told IGN. “Apple’s never done anything like this, where they had translation on stage for their events. I think that had them a little nervous originally, but that’s what we always do.”
“I was worried that we might come out and everyone might say ‘Hey we’re here to see iPhone 7, get off the stage,’” he joked. In reality, the designer got a great reception as he stepped on stage to unveil Nintendo’s next big mobile game. IGN sat down with Miyamoto to discuss his involvement with Super Mario Run, what he learned during the creative process, and more.
