Kojima Calls Out Metal Gear Survive’s Zombies
During a stage presentation at Tokyo Game Show 2016 for Hideo Kojima's new game, Death Stranding, the Metal Gear series creator made several comments regarding Metal Gear Survive, the zombie action game set in the Metal Gear universe made by Konami.
Kojima took the opportunity to distance himself from Konami’s forthcoming game Metal Gear: Survive, a spin-off from Kojima’s acclaimed Metal Gear series. When asked whether the idea for Survive had come from Kojima himself, he replied, “That’s nothing to do with me!
“The Metal Gear games are about political fiction and espionage,” he continued. “Where do zombies fit in with that?”
Death Stranding Will Be Out Before 2019, New Details
Death Stranding is due for release in 2018, Hideo Kojima told a huge crowd of fans during an on-stage Q&A session at Tokyo Game Show 2016 on Sunday.
“It will be out before the Olympics,” said Kojima, referring to the Tokyo 2020 Games. He then went on, “To go a little further, there is a movie called Akira, and it will be out before the year in which Akira is set.”
The anime movie Akira was set in 2019, so a “before” Akira would peg Death Stranding’s release date at sometime during 2018.
Kojima was joined on stage by Yoji Shinkawa, the longtime character and mechanical designer on the Metal Gear series who is now working on Death Stranding at Kojima’s own studio, Kojima Productions. Questions for the sessions were provided by fans via Twitter in the runup to the event.
First Look: J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon
In honor of today being "Batman Day," Justice League director Zack Snyder posted the first photo of Oscar winner J.K. Simmons as Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon in the still-filming DC superhero epic.
Snyder tweeted the photo below of Simmons as Gordon taken on the set of Justice League. I was among the journalists invited to the set in April and can confirm this shot of Gordon is from the GCPD rooftop scene we observed being filmed that day.
It was also Simmons' first day working on the movie.

Yakuza Will Never Come to Mobile
Toshihiro Nagoshi, creator of the Yakuza series, has ruled out a smartphone version of Sega’s high-concept action franchise, saying that his games are designed with the living room in mind.
“The Yakuza games are designed to be played on a TV at home,” he told IGN Japan, likening the experience of playing on a big TV to watching a movie in the theater instead of on DVD.
“Sometimes people ask us to make games for smartphone, and I’m sure we could make a phone version that would be quite fun to play. But for them to be 100% engaging, they need to be played on a TV with a console, because that’s how they were designed to be played.”
New Destiny ARG Infects Players With Buffs
Bungie has launched an alternate reality game ahead of Destiny's Rise of Iron expansion next week.
The ARG is called Owl Sector, and it's infecting players in game with stat-boosting buffs. The infections can be tracked on the Owl Sector section of the Bungie website.
There are five different infections in all: Brilliance 3.2, Glory 2.1, Splendor 2.6, Magnificence 2.0, and Fortitude 3.1. According to the Owl Sector mega-thread on the Destiny sub-reddit, players can become infected by picking up orbs from infected teammates in either public or private PvP matches.
Overwatch: A World Fans Built
In May of 2016, a tumblr user called radtone posted a picture they had drawn of Overwatch’s D.Va in chibi style, an aesthetic favoured by anime fans born from the Japanese word meaning “short or small person”. In June 2nd, radtone followed up with a small comic depicting D.Va as the tiny ravenous progeny of Soldier 76. Aggressively cute, this new interpretation of the character started to gain traction elsewhere on Tumblr, with artists giving her a Dorito and Dew addiction and a git gud ‘hardcore’ attitude. The result was a ferality both adorable and, for anyone who lives on the internet, very familiar.
How Tech Limitations Shaped the Yakuza Series
Toshihiro Nagoshi, creator of the Yakuza series, has said he believes that existing cutting-edge gaming technology could allow developers to do almost anything — if not for the prohibitive cost.
“With things like VR and sensor technology, we at Sega look into all of the new announcements and check out new tech, and to be honest, if you could just ignore the cost, there is almost nothing we can’t do now,” he told IGN Japan.
“But of course, that’s not going to work for the consumer. I think in future there will be two types of gamers: those who play simple games on their smartphone, and those who go all in.”
